How did Dakota and Elle Fanning turned out so well?

It's so rare for child stars in Hollywood.

What's the secret? Good parenting?

PS: Dear Dakota, that dress...NO!

Today we have M versus G.

Remember when we had the Dakota versus Abigail Breslin threads?

by Anonymousreply 1June 21, 2023 11:26 AM

They probably had parents who didn't pimp them out to executives.

by Anonymousreply 2June 21, 2023 11:41 AM

Lucky them, r2!

by Anonymousreply 3June 21, 2023 11:44 AM

I was involved

by Anonymousreply 4June 21, 2023 11:53 AM

Neither are particularly attractive.

by Anonymousreply 5June 21, 2023 12:15 PM

Elle is gorgeous - always dressed beautifully for events.

by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2023 12:20 PM

R5 = Abigail Breslin.

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2023 12:31 PM

Agree, r6, she reminds me of Nicole Kidman, always so elegant.

Elle is pure charm!

by Anonymousreply 9June 21, 2023 2:35 PM

Elle and her team bought some pieces from my vintage shop. She was a total doll and had beautiful skin.

by Anonymousreply 10June 21, 2023 3:15 PM

Dakota is the talented one but in Hollywood tits always win.

by Anonymousreply 11June 21, 2023 3:21 PM

WHO??!!!!

by Anonymousreply 12June 21, 2023 3:23 PM

Dakota is/was definitely one of the most gifted child actors ever. Every movie she was in she was fantastic (or at least her performances were). Man on Fire, Uptown Girls, Hide and Seek. It amazes me when children can outshine their adult costars with their acting chops. I was always worried about how her teefs would turn out though. Not too bad given the itty bitty Chicklets she had as a child.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2023 3:39 PM

My boyfriend has a running gag about how much Dakota must secretly hate Elle because how glamorous and tall she turned out to be - I love them both though. They're both talented. The Great is such a good and underrated show, and Elle was wonderful in The Neon Demon.

[quote]Abigail Breslin, Oscar nominee

And never to be heard from again.

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2023 4:17 PM

Elle and Nicholas are really wonderful in the Great.

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2023 4:25 PM

Turn****

Oh, dear me!

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2023 5:11 PM

Abigail Breslin is a slob now. She was in an episode of that new series "Accused" and was a train wreck.

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2023 6:34 PM

I just saw Elle today- she's way taller than I thought. Very similar to Charlize in where without makeup, her features disappear.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2023 6:59 PM

Dakota looks mischievous.

Elle looks totally vacant.

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2023 7:05 PM

Classy sisters!

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2023 7:42 PM

Until today I didn't know that they were two separate people.

by Anonymousreply 22June 21, 2023 7:42 PM

Abigail got BIG.

My niece is the spitting image of Elle Fanning. She was fucking 5’10 at 12 years old (her older sister was 6’ at 10 years old which in a way was really off putting and made her seem unlikeable for a period of time. You don’t expect a 6’ tall person to get hyper like a 10 year old or have a tantrum and when she did it just seemed SO wrong and I’d have to constantly remind myself, ok she’s only 10 years old. Don’t expect her to act like an adult. She grew up to be the sweetest, most considerate person around. I think people were hard on her for looking like a grown up and acting like a kid and she had to compensate by being extra nice which seems a little unfair to her but she’s a better person than most because of it.

At my cousin’s wedding, a sorta drunk 30ish guy started flirting with her (the Elle clone) and I had to say “Dude, she’s 13. Walk away”. He did and I felt bad for embarrassing him because at 13, dressed up for a wedding with the tiniest bit of makeup she could easily pass for early 20s. And he didn’t realize he was taking to an Amazonian freak of nature.

Weird thing is their parents were not THAT tall. Mom is 5’8, dad maybe 5’10. I’m the tallest guy in our family and I’m only 6’. No idea where these two came from.

It was so obvious when my older niece was 2 and the size of a 6 year old that she was going to be a giant. Doctors had her coming in for visits constantly trying to figure out what it was, was it hormonal, how tall did they estimate she would grow. Finally their mom got tired of it and said “ok, she’s gonna be tall. But you’re not telling me there’s anything wrong and I keep asking if this is a serious condition, a problem, or dangerous. And you saying no. You’re not concerned. You’re just curious, so I think we’re done with these appointments.” But they were telling her she’d be at least 6’6”.

They maxed out at 6’2 and 6’ respectively. Both skinny and blond. I always figured they’d get recruited to be models, but if they were ever asked, they turned it down and now both are college grads and ones a lawyer. Other one just graduated this year and is taking a gap year and has applied to grad schools for next year.

Coulda been supermodels. Young enough to date or at least get a ride on Leonardo DiCaprio's yacht. Decided to be smart instead. Go figure. 🤷🏻

I grew up watching Dakota and have always liked her. She is a talented actress, more so than Elle, who is occasionally decent but often comes across as vacant onscreen to me. Dakota is much more emotive. Both do seem well-adjusted though, and neither got caught up in the typical child star bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 25June 21, 2023 7:58 PM

Wait. I lied. I’m not the tallest guy. I have a nephew who hit 6’2 as well and AGAIN, parents not that tall.

by Anonymousreply 26June 21, 2023 7:58 PM

I love how Elle can be so physically graceful and elegant like Grace Kelly, but she’s a very down to earth and playfully fun person at the same time. Big fan.

by Anonymousreply 27June 21, 2023 8:51 PM

Their mother seems very normal and not mentally ill.

It appears to be one of those rare instances where the child really demanded to be an actor (Dakota) and the parent supported them and then later Elle too when she became an actor.

Both girls were naturally gifted performers and the mother always stayed completely out of the spotlight.

The Dakota and Abigail threads and sometimes just random comments used to make me laugh. Abigail would oftentimes be smoking cigarettes and Dakota would oftentimes be drinking a cocktail.

Dakota and Elle could be in a movie about the beginnings of Hollywood. Elle could play Mary Pickford and Dakota could play Lilian Gish. Better yet, they could play the Gish sisters. I don't know. They need to be cast in something together.

I assume their parents must be quite alright. They're southern so they probably had one of their parents or perhaps grandparents chaperone them on set because they truly seem unscathed by Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 29June 21, 2023 9:07 PM

Elle is perfection.

Aside from when Elle was dating Max Minghella, she had to put up with this bullshit. Which i'm sure is a constant issue in Hollyweird.

Stable upper middle class family. Probably relatively emotionally and psychologically healthy and not interesting in thrill seeking ( sorry but these innate predispositions matter).

by Anonymousreply 32June 22, 2023 12:07 AM

That's just the way they "turned".

by Anonymousreply 33June 22, 2023 12:27 AM

Just saw Elle in a Cartier commercial. She really suits the brand. Has a timeless elegance about her.

by Anonymousreply 34June 22, 2023 2:59 AM

Elle has the "model" looks, but I think she's hit-or-miss as an actress. Her weird, distant, drawling speaking style in "The Neon Deon" grated my nerves. I went and saw that movie in the theater with my sister-in-law, and to this day we both get a laugh out of imitating her performance in it. Still a good (and disturbing) movie.

Dakota has an earthiness about her that makes her more relatable I think. She's also been eclipsed by her sister in terms of profile level, but she's still a better actress. She was fucking fantastic in "Night Moves", one of her earlier adult roles where she played a young, radical environmentalist plotting to blow up a dam (Jesse Eisenberg and Peter Sarsgaard co-star). Things don't go well for her in that film.

Elle's interview at r32 tells you why they turned out okay and seem to be well adjusted young adults. She " can laugh at it now" while others would turn into drug/ sex/ body mutilating addicts over a comment made 10 thousand years ago.
