As long as this thread lives Julian lives
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 20, 2023 3:41 AM |
Can’t they send that guy from Oregon who found Coco, his dead dog and abandoned car to find Julian? I bet he’ll locate him in 24 hours or less.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 20, 2023 3:42 AM |
Some creature probably drug him off and feasted on him during the cold hard winter.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 20, 2023 3:53 AM |
I stopped following these threads because they were just people posting the weather report, not any actual news.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 20, 2023 4:09 AM |
R7 The weather is the news on this mountain. It can be extreme and harsh. Lots of people have died because of the weather on My. Baldy in addition those who have died from falls.

What a terrible ending.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 20, 2023 4:42 AM |
I haven't been following this story. Do they in fact think it was a mountain lion?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 20, 2023 6:07 AM |
Highly unlikely it was a mountain lion. He vanished from a high trail during a winter storm, when the trails were covered with ice and snow hid rocks, the winds were dangerously high, and there was a steep dropoff on at least one side.
Why the hell would a mountain lion be up there in the storm and ice and a deep snow, when it could be hunting deer at altitude? Maybe a mountain lion has since found the remains, but the greatest likelihood is that a fall or the cold killed him.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 20, 2023 6:35 AM |
The only hope at this point for him to be alive is if it was an alien abduction and they took him back to their planet and then return him after all the probing is done with his memory wiped.

R28 No, they wouldn’t have stopped searching for a “normal” person. Over the years, there have been several instances where searches continue for a period of several years for ordinary people. I live in LA and read about these searches.

[Quote]May he rest in peace, and well. There are worse ways to go out than doing something you love.
Yes to this. I visited the snowfields near my home in Australia recently and stupidly decided to go for an impromptu hike. Fresh snow had fallen, and there was only bird and animal footprints going across the path into the bushes. It was mid afternoon, and getting steadily darker. I stopped at a lookout and lost sight of the path. I was bumbling around for a good 5 minutes, just circling amongst snow covered boulders and trees. I wasn't scared (the resort was not far at all and I had my phone) but Julian did pop into my head and I thought if I become terminally ill, this may be the way to go. Out in nature, alone, with nothing but pure white and fresh air all around me. It was a beautiful experience.

they have to wait for the family to confirm the identity.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 26, 2023 7:25 AM |
They must have dental records to use to ID him right? I mean, he's British, so his dental upkeep was probably minimal, but he was an actor so must have seen a dentist a few times. Why would the family need to ID the body? It must be decomposed at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 26, 2023 9:33 PM |
I can't believe it's taking so long to identify the body.

NYT obit
On Sunday, authorities recovered human remains near the mountain where search crews had been looking for Mr. Sands. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said it had been contacted by hikers who had found human remains in the Mount Baldy wilderness. Dangerous conditions, including a series of severe storms, had complicated search efforts.
The coroner’s office identified the remains as Mr. Sands on Tuesday. It added that the cause of his death remained under investigation.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | June 28, 2023 12:05 AM |
Mr. Sands’s survivors include his wife, Evgenia Citkowitz; his daughters, Natalya and Imogen; and his son, Henry. His marriage to Sarah Harvey ended in divorce.
Mr. Sands loved hiking in the Los Angeles area, especially on Mount Baldy.
“I must have been up Mount Baldy about 200 times, so I think this is a real favorite,” he was quoted as saying in “My City, My Los Angeles: Famous People Share Their Favorite Places” (2013), by Jeryl Brunner. “And I like it in winter. Winter conditions make it a bit more interesting.”

by Anonymous | reply 100 | June 30, 2023 1:08 AM |
He probably fell, didn't he? Will they be able to tell if he had broken bones from a fall or will decomp and animal activity make that impossible to determine?
by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 30, 2023 9:19 PM |
I think a good medical examiner can tell the difference between a bone that broke in a fall, and a bone that was the result of an animal chewing on the corpse. Fang marks and suchlike, you know.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 30, 2023 10:02 PM |
R102- Thanks, that makes sense. I do hope he fell and died instantly. The thought of him lingering in pain and being helpless would be horrible. I have never been to there but the ones here who have hiked that trail have said falling is a real danger and many hikers have unfortunately died from falls.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | June 30, 2023 11:00 PM |
I think the likeliest explanation for his death is that he fell from the notoriously icy high trail, and I hope he lost consciousness instantly. If not, the cold probably gave him a comparatively quick and easy way out, and at 10,000 feet above sea level on a stormy winter day, the wind-chill would have been at Saskatchewan levels.
Remember, all you hikers and outdoorsmen, you can only make that fatal mistake *once*!
by Anonymous | reply 104 | June 30, 2023 11:32 PM |
Well, RIP.
I still think it was a good way for him to go. In the most recent photographs of him, he was looking awfully frail. Better to die a (presumably relatively quick) hiker's death out in the elements.

‘I’ll miss him every day of my life’: John Malkovich on the death of his close friend Julian Sands.
Speaking to People on Wednesday (5 July), Malkovich, 69, said that he and Sands were “the greatest of friends since we met doing a film called The Killing Fields in 1983, the first film I ever did”.
“We stayed incredibly close since then,” he said. “I’ll miss him every day of my life, but such is life. You lose a lot along the road until you’re lost. And that’s the way life ends, I’m afraid. I’m very sad about it, but obviously of course mostly for his children.”
Malkovich, who is godfather to Sands’ first son Henry, added: “At my age, we get used to people dying. Many of my friends and colleagues are already gone, and I’ll join them one of these days. Such is life.”
