My dad was mad at the meat loaf last night.

We went here for Father’s Day weekend. He did not like the meat loaf because “it doesn’t have ketchup”.

I ordered meat loaf too. I thought it was good - maybe a little dense. But it was fine with no ketchup.

More information please. He wants the ketchup baked on as a glaze or baked in? He couldn't simply ask for a side of ketchup?

by Anonymousreply 1June 17, 2023 1:38 PM

Meatloaf is just a burger with no bun. 🤢

by Anonymousreply 2June 17, 2023 1:40 PM

R2 that's ridiculous. The best burgers are 100% ground beef, in not too overly handled and mushed patties.

by Anonymousreply 3June 17, 2023 1:42 PM

R1, the meatloaf comes covered in mushroom gravy (which was really good). Dad could have asked for a side of ketchup, I guess. But his biggest complaint was that the meatloaf was not baked with ketchup on top.

I guess he is used to poor people meatloaf: ketchup baked on top and TONS of filler to make the meatloaf last longer for a family of 6.

I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the meatloaf!

by Anonymousreply 5June 17, 2023 1:48 PM

That's funny, I know a lady who was mad at the dirt...

R3 unless you are grinding your own steaks up at home to make burgers, no ground beef is 100% meat.

by Anonymousreply 7June 17, 2023 1:49 PM

Was he really mad at the lack of ketchup or was it something else?

by Anonymousreply 8June 17, 2023 1:56 PM

It could be how he likes it for nostalgia, but are his food tastes/selections limited? People like that often cannot compute things outside of their 15 lifelong dishes.

My uncle never cooks, limits where we can have family meals to American food restaurants and comes to the kitchen with such 1971 meal tips as, “Do you want to add curly parsley?” or “That could use some celery salt”.

by Anonymousreply 9June 17, 2023 2:01 PM

This will teach him to ask. Or maybe you could ask about such things and inform him. He would have been better off with a plain steak and ketchup.

by Anonymousreply 10June 17, 2023 2:03 PM

R7 - wow, where do you live where this is true?

by Anonymousreply 11June 17, 2023 2:04 PM

The menu. Yum.

Eating out is a waste of money. Look at those prices r12.

by Anonymousreply 13June 17, 2023 2:18 PM

Well it's THE Hershey Lodge.

by Anonymousreply 14June 17, 2023 2:20 PM

Is it at an offramp of the Hershey Highway?

by Anonymousreply 15June 17, 2023 2:49 PM

$38 meatloaf? It does sound good though, especially with the truffle mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy. I think I will try to find a similar recipe online.

by Anonymousreply 16June 17, 2023 3:06 PM

I cannot imagine going out and ordering meatloaf at a restaurant. I have nothing against meatloaf, I occasionally make it at home. But I tend to order seafood because I live in a flyover state and it’s difficult for me to find quality seafood to cook. I’d order the scallops or yellowfin tuna.

by Anonymousreply 17June 17, 2023 3:36 PM

Is this your dad or your "dad"?

by Anonymousreply 18June 17, 2023 3:56 PM

Cheap truffle flavor ruins just about everything.

by Anonymousreply 19June 17, 2023 4:19 PM

Lots of people order meatloaf at diners and casual restaurants.

by Anonymousreply 20June 17, 2023 4:20 PM

This isn’t casual.

by Anonymousreply 21June 17, 2023 4:20 PM

Well, quite frankly, your dad isn't all THAT, either.

by Anonymousreply 22June 17, 2023 4:37 PM

It is unlikely that the meatloaf is entirely made of wagyu, and it'd be usual to serve ketchup with a meatloaf that comes with mushroom gravy.

FIFTEEN? More like FIVE.

by Anonymousreply 24June 17, 2023 5:06 PM

Baby tastes.

by Anonymousreply 25June 17, 2023 8:48 PM

R21 1) it doesn't have casual prices but look at it. It's a casual restaurant. 2) I was responding to R17 who is so dimwitted he can't imagine anyone ever ordering meatloaf at any restaurant. But R21, you're slow, as well.

by Anonymousreply 26June 17, 2023 9:34 PM

Don’t let your meat loaf.

by Anonymousreply 27June 17, 2023 9:43 PM

I think Americans are used to having a sweet-ish glaze on meatloaf. (I grew up with the Lipton onion soup meatloaf - which isn't sweet.) So, that's probably what OP's dad was missing, the sweetness.

However, that $38 meatloaf did sound good with the marsala mushroom gravy. I would also doubt that it's wagyu beef.

Dad may just be grouchy and stuck in his tastes. But reading the menu, I wouldn't have assumed there was going to be ketchup in that meatloaf.

People get embarrassed to ask for ketchup at expensive restaurants. While that restaurant may be "casual," there's a tomahawk rib chop (for 2) that costs $115 and surf and turf for $73.

If it were my mom or dad, I would have asked the waiter or waitress to bring Dad some ketchup, please.

Tourist trap in a tourist town. What could go wrong? Didn't no reservations Memorial Day - Labor Day tip you off?

by Anonymousreply 29June 17, 2023 10:04 PM

My grandmother always said never order meatloaf out: YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY PUT IN IT.

by Anonymousreply 30June 17, 2023 10:09 PM

Was granny a you-might-get-hit-by-a-bus clean underwear advocate as well?

Did he beat the meat?

by Anonymousreply 32June 17, 2023 10:44 PM

R32 both hands

by Anonymousreply 33June 17, 2023 11:03 PM

Hot!

by Anonymousreply 34June 17, 2023 11:03 PM

"Mad at the meatloaf" reminds me of Joan Crawford. She wasn't mad at her housekeeper, she was mad at the dirt.

OP, maybe your dad was mad at you, but said he was mad at the meatloaf.

by Anonymousreply 35June 17, 2023 11:06 PM

No, R31—far from it, actually.

by Anonymousreply 36June 17, 2023 11:46 PM

Greg: Thoughts, please, on the nuances of meatloaf?

by Anonymousreply 37June 18, 2023 1:57 AM

It will come as no surprise that I have the most amazing recipe for meatloaf.

I use 50% ground beef—good ground beef. Perhaps 85% lean. And 25% ground pork and 25% ground veal. I use crushed saltines for the filler. And I sauté finely minced onions and garlic. Some ground mustard, some Worcestershire sauce, a squeeze of tomato paste, some finely chopped parsley leaves and a beaten egg or two. I often put a mixture of light brown sugar, ketchup, and apple cider vinegar on top as it cooks.

Delicious!

by Anonymousreply 38June 18, 2023 1:20 PM

He should just pop into the VCR a bootleg tape of Rocky Horror and enjoy his best performance of a lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 39June 18, 2023 1:33 PM

Greg, thank you. You never fail!

by Anonymousreply 40June 19, 2023 2:08 AM

You’re very welcome, R40.
