Apple Martini Models Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2002 Alexander McQueen Oscars Dress

While she might be named after a different, symbolism-laden plant, Apple Martin and her mom Gwyneth Paltrow are two peas in a pod. The 50-year-old actor dedicated some time on Thursday to answering fan-submitted questions on Instagram. The queries Paltrow fielded ranged from her fave spots in London to post-breakup advice to the best place for a lash tint. However, one question in particular resulted in Paltrow sharing a delightful glimpse at her mother-daughter bond, “Does Apple ever wear any of ur fashion archives?”

The answer is yes. The Goop founder shared a snap of Apple, 19, wearing the infamous dress Paltrow wore to the 2002 Oscars. The gothic look, which featured a sheer bodice, was crafted by the late Alexander McQueen. At the time, the figure-hugging look proved to be quite controversial. Years later, in 2013, Paltrow would say of the look, “There were a few issues; I still love the dress itself but I should have worn a bra and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup.”

Regardless, it’s great to see mother and daughter connecting over an invaluable piece of fashion history embedded with pop culture significance. Like her mother, Apple Martin is fast-becoming an It-girl—earlier this year, she attended Chanel’s haute couture show as a special guest, clad in a black-and-white tweed suit by the house. “The Chanel couture show was my first fashion experience, and I am so incredibly grateful to Chanel and their incredible team for having me,” Martin, the daughter of Paltrow and her ex-husband Chris Martin, told Vogue at the time.

The access to archival hands-me-downs is certainly one of the perks of being the child of celebrity. Salma Hayek’s daughter, Valentina, borrowed her mother’s 1997 Isaac Mizrahi gown for the 2023 Oscars. While Heidi Klum’s daughter, Leni, wore a 1998 dress worn by the supermodel to prom.

And for what it’s worth, Paltrow seems to have come around to her McQueen look in more recent years. In a 2021 interview with Vogue, the star expressed her continuing love for the one-of-a-kind creation. “Everybody really hated this [dress] ... but I think it’s kind of dope. I’m into it,” she said. “I had a weird hangover about it for a while because people were really critical. I think at the time it was too goth, I think people thought it was too hard, so I think it sort of shocked people. But I like it.” Hopefully next Martin will take one of her mom’s archival outfits out for a spin. The Gucci red suit, perhaps?

I think McQueen was great, but that has to be the ugliest dress ever!

Zero charisma. Make this cunt go away.

by Anonymousreply 2June 17, 2023 1:24 PM

The kidszh rarely inherit the charishma, do they?

by Anonymousreply 3June 17, 2023 1:29 PM

The nepo kid does know that's a 9/11 mourning dress, right? I wouldn't be smiling in it like that if I were her.

by Anonymousreply 4June 17, 2023 1:37 PM

We rarely see her brother. Do they hide him? Is he special?

Tits out for 9/11!

by Anonymousreply 6June 17, 2023 1:47 PM

“9-11 was like totally so sad, like no cap, soooo sad!” - Apple

by Anonymousreply 7June 17, 2023 1:56 PM

She has nicer tits than her mother at that age, but they still have to photograph her from the side so her wonky eyes aren't so apparent.

by Anonymousreply 8June 17, 2023 2:08 PM

The bigger tits mean the dress doesn't fit, though. They are pulling the decorative middle band out of shape when it should lie flat, as it does in the Gwynnie pics.

I don't think the dress was so much a 9/11 mourning dress as Gwyneth's response to all the criticism about her frou-frou pink winner dress from the year before.

To model something, you have to be a model.

Sorry, Apple!

Ah the famous chicken cutlet top.

I was under the impression that the clothing and jewelry worn to the awards events was borrowed. Is this common for actors to keep a designer gown they're never gonna wear again?

Yes, it is!

Beachy waves with that dress? I don’t think that would have looked right either.

The dress was just too edgy for her WASPY looks (such as they are), and always was. It was meant for someone with a gothier edge.

by Anonymousreply 15June 17, 2023 7:50 PM

R15 WASPy haha.

Woulda looked better on Winona.

Or Wynona (Judd)!

by Anonymousreply 18June 17, 2023 10:57 PM

She's such a twat! I guess she really wanted to show that fur coat, hanging inthe background.
