by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 20, 2023 10:44 AM |
It's actually not
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 16, 2023 8:00 PM |
this youtuber said it like that r1, skip to 00:22
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 16, 2023 8:08 PM |
r1 It actually is, everyone I've ever heard pronounce his name said "marr".
No idea, OP, it's just one of those things, americanised surnames are all over the place. You hear lots of different pronunciations of the "-stein" surname as well and very few of them are correct, as in the way a German would pronounce them. And don't get me started on the Wachowskis or Klobuchar (which originates in my neck of the woods).
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 16, 2023 8:52 PM |
Because BILL MAARVELOUS was already registered with SAG
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 17, 2023 12:03 AM |
I watch "On Patrol Live" and there are two Maher brothers in Daytona Beach and they pronounce it Marr.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 17, 2023 12:14 AM |
His family name probably originally is the Irish surname Meagher, which is pronounced: "Marr."
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 17, 2023 12:37 AM |
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 17, 2023 1:02 AM |
It's actually pronouncrd "dick-head." It's not phonetic at all.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 17, 2023 1:10 AM |
Why is Graham pronounced gram, why is mayonnaise pronounced man-ayze, why is syrup pronounced surp?*
*by some mush-mouthed people, the rest of us can enunciate
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 17, 2023 3:08 PM |
Don't know but I was told he has Arab lineage in his family that he's desperate to keep people finding out about. That may be part of it.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 17, 2023 3:12 PM |
Oh please, R10. He wouldn’t give a shit if anyone knew— if anything, he’d be more at liberty to criticize that part of the world. This isn’t the 1950s.
He’s half Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 17, 2023 3:39 PM |
Well it would explain why he's always promoting Israel. It's to throw people off track. And also an expression of his own self-hatred.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 17, 2023 3:40 PM |
Oh God, DL has so many rules about posting links.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 17, 2023 3:47 PM |
Is something wrong with DL now.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 17, 2023 3:48 PM |
It's actually pronounced Bill Ma-Yer but the Y is so soft that it's pronounced closer to Bill Ma-er. People hear it as Marr.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 18, 2023 1:50 AM |
Anderson Cooper called him Bill Mayer when he was promoting one of Maher's appearances on CNN. He looked perplexed too like he had no idea who he was talking about. Maher must have loved that.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 18, 2023 4:47 AM |
R18 Maher’s probably just grateful AC promotes it, period.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 18, 2023 5:03 AM |
It’s actually pronounced Ma-her but people are lazy and call him Marr.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 18, 2023 4:02 PM |
Yes, there’s an inept troll called pastaboi who likes making divisive posts, often linking to the Russian propaganda site, Zero Hedge.
The word Maher exists in many languages— you’re an idiot for, among other things, thinking that, your cheesy baby name link is a ‘smoking gun.’
No one believes Bill Maher is Arab, but even if he had Arab ancestry, no one here would care. He’s Bill Maher, not Bill Maher’s grandpa.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 18, 2023 4:39 PM |
[QUOTE] No one believes Bill Maher is Arab, but even if he had Arab ancestry, no one here would care.
He cares. It is a source of burning shame for him.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 18, 2023 4:41 PM |
[QUOTE] He’s half Jewish.
We know that for a fact? Or are we taking his word for it.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 18, 2023 4:47 PM |
Where is this Arab BS coming from? Bill claimed he didn't know his mother was Jewish. He was raised Roman Catholic. Why would he care if he came from an Arab Roman Catholic background? Bill has an angry Irish attitude though.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 18, 2023 4:48 PM |
[QUOTE] Bill claimed he didn't know his mother was Jewish.
That makes it even fishier.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 18, 2023 4:54 PM |
R25
It's not fishy. Christopher Hitchens didn't know his mother was Jewish until he was a young adult. In some families, people who were Jews hid it because of antisemitism.

[QUOTE] In some families, people who were Jews hid it because of antisemitism.
Or the made up backstory is a Whoopi move to help him in show business.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 18, 2023 5:02 PM |
Hitchens was actually an intelligent, talented person. Maher is not.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 18, 2023 5:18 PM |
Can confirm that Maher is a grifter.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 18, 2023 7:49 PM |
Hate thread. Shut it down Muriel.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 18, 2023 8:36 PM |
Maher: Because the "h and e" are silent.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 18, 2023 8:58 PM |
Then why bother with them?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 18, 2023 9:03 PM |
Bill can pronounce it perfectly in Arabic.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 18, 2023 9:11 PM |
Why is Milngavie in Scotland pronounced "mil-guy"?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 18, 2023 9:40 PM |
R34, to trick the English.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 18, 2023 9:55 PM |
Some people try to pronounce Irish names in what the6 think is a “more Irish” way. We had a Mr Maher in high school and we called him “Marr” but our very prissy dean deliberately called him “Mr Ma-her.” And I remember the disgusting Ted Kennedy calling Phil Donahue “Mr Donna-hoo.” Maybe it’s “more Irish” but Donna-hoo sounds rih-tadded.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 18, 2023 11:25 PM |
Why is Wednesday pronounced “Wensday”? I would think it would be pronounced WED-NESS-DAY!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 18, 2023 11:41 PM |
He says his own name at 2:08. To my ears, it sounds like he said "Marr-en," but maybe it was him pausing before proceeding with his next statement.

Peter Godwin, a writer/lawyer who grew up in then Rhodesia, did not learn his father was Jewish until after his father had died, IIRC. He knew his father had fought in WWII, so he wasn't surprised to find military medals. He realized they weren't British, though. They were Polish. His father had been sent to England before the war to study. After reaching adulthood, he fought with the Free Polish forces. After the war, he attended a polytechnic to study engineering, married an English gentile doctor, and the two migrated to Rhodesia. His father hid his Jewishness because of the antisemitism he had experienced.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 19, 2023 1:40 PM |
^ What on earth does that have to do with Maher, who had a pampered upbringing in the USA?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 19, 2023 1:44 PM |
Some people hide their Jewishness, e.g, Hitchens mentioned above, who grew up pampered in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 19, 2023 1:46 PM |
I doubt his mother was religious. Catholics who marry out of their faith have to raise their children Catholic. His mother was interviewed in his movie Religoulos and she said she thought children should get some moral training. She never went to church and Maher finally asked her why at age 13. Maher's father eventually walked away from the church because of the birth control issue. His mother was a nurse in the military during the war. This is kind of a nasty thing to say but his father was pretty handsome and Maher's mother looks just like Bill. She probably didn't have a lot of options for who she could marry.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 20, 2023 12:28 AM |
R42 well he got all the Jewish looks, pretty much. And his whole general aura, sense of humor, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 20, 2023 1:31 AM |
No the sense of humor came from his father and brains from his mother. His mother was a quiet introvert. His father was a radio announcer. He read the news at the top of the hour.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 20, 2023 8:38 AM |
So now your calling Maher a LIAR?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 20, 2023 10:39 AM |
It means "smug overpaid douche" in Gaelic.
