Return From the Ashes (1965)

I should say this film is loaded with intrigue and surprises.

BTW was Maximillian Schell into men at all? Damn, he was hot.

His personality did NOT live up to his good looks.

& I'm not suggesting anything sinister.

He seems quite charming and intelligent in this interview from 1975.

Eggar was one of the loveliest ladies from that period, up there with Diana Rigg.

Supposedly Eggar was difficult and demanding and her career tanked fast.

The movie is adapted from a novel by Hubert Monteilhet, who also wrote the thriller "Les Mantes Religieuses" or "Praying Mantis". "Praying Mantis" also had a twisty plot that sort of defied belief. "Praying Mantis" in 1982 was turned into a 2-part series starring Jonathan Pryce, Cherie Lunghi and a very devious Carmen du Sautoy. It was shown on PBS Mystery I think around 1983 in the U.S.

This story "Le Retour des Cendres"was remade in Germany in 2014 as "Phoenix" starring Barbara Hoss directed by Christian Petzold. Supposedly pretty good. The final scene of the sixties version is pretty exciting.

Schell was 5' 10 3/4". I noticed he didn't look very tall in Five Finger Exercise.

Her career may not have been A list, but according to her imdb page she worked regularly for decades. Lived to the age of 84.

She's quite good in this film, but Schell and Thulin outshine her. They deliver.

She's still alive!

My glamour lesbian sister just told me Ingrid Thulin was gay. That she was married decades but never lived with the husbear. Instead she lived most of her life in Italy.

Stunning in The Damned.

Great looking movie, both the b&w cinematography and the star (Schell) are gorgeous. I wish they had fleshed out Herbert Lom's role a little more; he was a good actor, but needed more to work with here. Wikipedia says the French director Clouzot (who did "Diabolique") planned to make the movie, but eventually sold the rights to J. Lee Thompson.
