"Grease" may not be great filmmaking, but still great fun!

On June 16, 1978 "Grease" was released nationally & became the year's top-grossing movie, with a soundtrack that eventually sold 30 million copies. 45 years later, it's still a perennial favorite, with John Travolta at his most charismatic, Olivia Newton-John at her most endearing, & a cast of engaging young stars and seasoned veterans. Is it a film masterpiece? No, but "Grease" is still great fun! My tribute here:

The movie, IMO, is a classic. Eve Arden, Joan Blondell, and Sid Caesar were wonderful

I even love Stockard Channing portrayal and don’t think she looks too old. It somehow all works.

I had a huge crush on Jeff Conaway. Oof, he was cute in a 1978 kinda way

I loved this soundtrack. Grease along with Saturday Night Fever was my first, non-Disney record. Watching this movie today, I'm struck by how not one person in the cast looks a day under 30. But it's still fun

Yes, in my review, I was surprised to find that Travolta was the only cast member remotely close to high school age!

Here's the world premiere special of "Grease," back in June of '78!

I beliebe Dinah Manoff was a teenager, R3.

It’s a great movie. Appealing leads, top notch supporting cast.

Her character was my favorite, R5. I always identify with the slutty one.

Waiting for the resident contrarian to say his typical shit……

It wasn’t popular. It only made x dollars. The music flopped. Madonna is better……

Dennis Stewart, who played bad boy Leo in the drag race scene, died of AIDS in '94. He also reprised his Leo role in "Grease 2."

I don't think you're going to find many arguments here, OP. It's a beloved classic. The soundtrack is also one of the best selling albums of all time.

Had to look high and low, but found a good FREE copy of "Grease" for y'all that don't own a copy!

Loved it and had a pink satin jacket.

Chic’s C’est Chic was my first real non-kid record, but Grease and Saturday Night Fever were one and two.

(Two and three)

It's not as quite as good as the original Broadway musical, but it's still pretty good and holds up after all these years. Grease 2 was disappointing even though it had the very lovely Maxwell Caulfield. Grease Live from 2016 starring Aaron Tveit includes all the new songs that were added to Grease 1978 but it also includes the songs from the Broadway version that were missing from the movie version. I love the excitement and electricity of Grease Live and I find it as good as the film version, and perhaps better.

We saw Grease in a West End production in London in ‘95 or ‘96 and were incredibly disappointed.

The original stage play was ugly, nasty and mean.

Barry Gibb wrote the title Frankie Valli track. Back in this 1976-1979 era, was there anything without a Gibb connection?

I loved this movie as a kid but cannot watch it as an adult. It’s too stupid

by Anonymousreply 19June 16, 2023 12:45 AM

Lol, I tried, too R19. I sure loved it as a young girl, though.

I loved it, saw it a few times in the theater as a kid. IIRC it was rereleased one or two years later, I remember it was the first time I went to the movies with the neighbor kids sans adult supervision, but we’d all seen it with our parents during the original release.

I never realized that the animation for the Grease opening sequence was done by the same artist who did the animation for another childhood fave, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. His name was John Wilson.

r22 like anyone but you knows who that is.

Olivia Newton-John was never one of my favorite singers in her/my heyday. But I have to admit I have grown to love this song. Has a bit of a country twang to it that I like, and suited her to a T.
