Novaxx is historic with 23 slams. He's the favorite for Wimbledon. Who else can challenge him? Most players suck on grass. Will Alcaraz surprise us all, or will he cramp up again?

Ugh with primetime being on during the entirety of the French Open. So sad Alcaraz cramped up and lost. The first two sets of tennis were amazing to watch.
Djokovic is the last of the Big 3. I thought this year's French Open was going to be the rise of the 21 and under club. So frustrating we have to still deal with a member of the Big 3 winning Slams. Hopefully these young guys will keep rising and start taking them out at Slams, not just Masters 1000 or other ATP events.
I agree with OP. Novak is the heavy favorite at Wimbledon. That's where someone serving lights out can possibly pull and upset, though, so I hope Djokovic has a draw filled with serving nightmares.

The grass field has never looked weaker. Fritz might make it to the second week, heck, even Raonic might.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 16, 2023 6:46 AM |
men's tennis continues to be a joke
I don't blame Alcaraz as he's only 20 and is not at his peak nor does he have the most experience. He's already done amazingly well and I'm sure he'll continue with some ups and downs.
I blame the guys aged 24-32 ranked in the top 50. They should be at their peak of fitness, technique, strategy, mental toughness and experience yet they just crumble time and time again against Djokovic.
I hope Ruud does not make any more finals. His backhand SUCKS. Way too spinny and the top 30 can really punish it.
Zverev is an asshole, alleged abuser and before the injury, a known choker. I mean he fucking out-choked Thiem in that infamously bad USO final
Thiem-after choking several times at the slams, got lucky at 1 USO since he didn't have to play the big 3 and came out the winner only to go off the deep end mentally before he had the wrist injury from which he's trying to return from now
Medvedev-he has improved on clay and grass but still is only a consistent threat to Djokovic on hardcourts. I hope he ends up in Djokovic's half at this year's USO
Tsitsipas-another headcase who has actually never won an outdoor hardcourt title. Shocking for someone who's been ranked #3. His backhand can break down
Rublev- a mindless ball basher and gets tight in big matches. He's never gotten past the QF at any slam
Fritz-has been hyped for years but especially after winning Indian Wells. SUCKS in slams with just 1 QF to his name and 1 other 4th round appearance
Khachanov-very few titles. He's been peaking this year after several years of slumping but in big matches, the forehand still falls apart with that funky grip
right now, Alcaraz, Rune and Sinner are the best bets to stop Djokovic as they're all young and still improving

Daddy is gonna need sexxx after his loss today.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 16, 2023 4:48 PM |
R11, good analysis and I agree with your assessments. The 24-32 Next Gen club are all mentally weak. It's funny to say that about Medvedev, who makes you beat him, but he can't pull it together often enough against the Big 3 in Slams. He choked badly against Nadal twice in Slam finals despite leading in both. His one win against Djokovic at the US Open can be attributed to Djokovic shockingly crumbling and not bringing his best tennis because he was going for a Calendar Year Grand Slam. Djokovic was overwhelmed by the occasion. I'm still surprised at how he played in that final. Medvedev hasn't won a Slam since that one was gifted to him.
Tsitsipas is a total head case. He has a ton of talent, but he won't get over that hump with his mindset. His loss to Djokovic at the 2021 French Open was the ultimate choke. He was outplaying Djokovic, then he went flat after being up two sets to none. Pathetic.
The Big 3 are/were amazing these past 20 years, but I've always felt the mental weakness of the generations under them assisted them in reaching their 20 or more Slams apiece.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 16, 2023 5:04 PM |
Stef’s great weakness is his backhand- he has an awful slice and hits it too shallow- he needs a real coach to bring his game to the next level. I believe Carlos will take over completely very soon. He will manage his physical problems with experience- Sinner and Rune are wild cards. They could go either way. Sinner need to improve in the forecourt and also slice backhand. Rune may self destruct- or maybe not. He’s sort of a Jimmy Connors.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 16, 2023 5:54 PM |
I think Rune is for real. That doesn’t mean he will win majors but maybe. And he can challenge the best more so than Ruud, FAA, Tsitsipas, etc.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 16, 2023 8:01 PM |
Ruud not playing any run-up grass tournaments? I wouldn't be shocked if he has an early exit at Wimbledon. Also doesn't seem like a great attitude. The players who decide that they suck at grass / clay and avoid it or don't try don't have a champion's attitude.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 17, 2023 3:44 AM |
Carlos needs to calm down on tje fist pumping. All that fist pumping at the semifinals did him in. Carlos had only tied the game through what we now know was extreme effort and third set too was tied , yet there he was exhausting himself with all the fist pumping.
I think Novaxx did some voodoo on Carlos if you ask me...novaxx looks like someone who deals with the occult. I bet he and and his team were laughing at Carlos behind the scenes Think of it, Carlos easily beat Novaxx on their first meeting , novaxx has never beaten Holger and carlos is a mich better player than Holger...why would it suddenly be so difficult.
Novaxx was determined to break this record and prove something to those who slighted him last year. I bet he went beyond normal training for help to win

Ahhh, Andy's ass. A classic. I love him.
Novak should sail through Wimbledon (barring injury) but the US Open is another story for sure. Such a tough tournament to win. One stat that always surprises me is that Novak has "only" won it 3 times. Very tough, brutal tournament to win. I can absolutely see Alcaraz defending his title, or Meddy winning. Stef less so. And Sinner and Rune are aching to break through. Novak will have his hands full.
I do think that the calendar Slam run from a few years back benefits Novak, he might feel looser and freer to go for it. My memory is that he was *extremely* tight in that final against Meddy.

You're right, R48. I went back and watched the 2019 US Open final again. However, Medvedev had the momentum of winning the third and fourth sets, he had early break chances in the 5th against Nadal, and he was leading in the service game where Nadal broke but Medvedev made too many errors and couldn't get a first serve in. He let all that momentum go. Australia 2022 was even worse. The 24 and over club are a bunch of mental midgets at the Slams.

Rune is talented so that seems to be a perfect excuse.
The truth is the number of complete assholes on atp is really high, Rune is special to make his way to the top of that list at such young age.
And talking about assholes, Tsitsipas is specially unbearable since he is "dating" Paula Badosa. I know people said both are divas so are perfect for each other, but Paula is pretty nice unlike him

In the 70s and 80s, the American tennis public loved rude and boorish players such as Connors, McEnroe and Nastase. I don't understand why other than their obvious skills, but there were plenty of other players who were decent human beings in the same era (Borg, Edberg, Wilander, etc.) who I preferred.

R76 I could understand that in his case, like Ian Thorpe said i was a national hero and a national hero can't be gay, that could fit Tsitsipas who is the only greek top player ever.
But it doesn't have sense for her. She is straight and she is a top player (irregular, but one of the best when she plays good), she doesn't need him to promote herself.
Anyway, i'm always suspicious about gay rumour of people who are disliked or who doesn't fit the norm, and Tsitsipas fits both cases.
I remember year ago one of the player of Sevilla (soccer) had rumours around him and i found it very believable because he didn't fit the mold at all (he had fame of being really brute on the field)

by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 18, 2023 6:43 PM |
I don't care about Rune but I appreciate that along with Alcaraz there's finally a younger player who believes in himself and can defeat Djokovic sometimes. At this point anyone who can defeat the biggest asshole in the history of the sport, Djokovic, makes me happy temporarily when it comes to tennis.
Djokovic will probably end up the most accomplished male player in history but I hope he is given the Margaret Court treatment forever. I hate when some commentators and tennis press members wrongly generalize the hate directed towards him. I was never 1 of the fans who hated him simply because he was able to defeat Federer and Nadal. Yes there are SOME unreasonable diehard Federer and Nadal super freak stans who hate anyone who can defeat their idol but that's not me. I actually welcomed Djokovic with open arms when he first came on tour. I was happy to see someone break up the growing monotony of Federer-Nadal dominance. My dislike for Djokovic also has nothing to do with him being Serbian and I don't think most tennis fans care where heh comes from.
After a few years of him on tour we just started seeing his terrible behavior and attitude. He had frequent outbursts, screaming at umpires, his annoying parents did the same. His worst behavior has shockingly been in the last 5 years as he's gotten older. His ego and sense of entitlement have gotten out of control. From hitting a lineswoman after taking a temper tantrum to his outburst at the Olympics, I was done. Then the biggest offense of all was his behavior during covid. From his stupid exhibition in 2020 during which he did not take any precautions and ended up getting the virus plus plus being a super spreader to his continued antivaxxer stance, just gross. Then the very worst part that the press and commentators mostly ignore which was his plot to play at the 2022 AO. He either got a Serbian doctor to falsify a positive covid result (which would mean he got the virus twice in about 16 months) all to try and enter Australia without vaccination, claiming the new antibodies he developed would be enough OR he really did get covid for the second time but was nonetheless shown at multiple events that week in Belgrade around other people maskless, once again being a super spreader. From the moment he was rightfully deported, he has taken on this martyr complex and it is beyond nauseating. The way he reacted to winning this year's AO and RG you'd think he was wrongfully jailed for 10 years. Just a disgusting person

happy Tiafoe is finally starting to win titles. He went several years after getting Delray Beach with nothing. Now this year he's won 2 more, Houston and Stuttgart. Unusual for a player's first 3 titles to all be on different surfaces. If he keeps playing like this he'll likely win 1-2 more titles this year and could well end up the top American with a shot at being at the YEC. I much prefer him to Fritz so that'd make me happy
Struff I hope wins a singles title at some point. He's among the best players of the last 10 years not to win anything.
Murray won the Nottingham challenger so he's on a good run for Wimbledon. Hopefully he stays healthy

This is nothing new for Felix, R89. For every step forward, he takes a three-quarter step backward. As R91 stated, his best results have been on indoor hard courts, though he's been to the quarters or semis of all the slams but RG, where he took Nadal to five sets in the fourth round last year. At least he has no pressure at Wimbledon since Cressy took him out in the first round last year.

I was in college; it was the early 80s. There was a local, well-known, men’s tour stop sponsored by a major financial company, and my mom happened to worked at their corporate hdqtrs — in HR.
She arranged for a gig where I volunteered as a towel boy in the locker room. which entitled me to two free tickets for each night I worked…that alone made me popular with my fraternity brothers’ parents looking for seats.
The locker room was pretty low key, as players came and went. THE story: late in the tournament, Connors was coming back into the locker room, all sweaty after winning, when Nastase popped up in the doorway and “jumped” Connors from behind (as a joke). Jimmy did NOT laugh…he was so pissed that he kept cussing out Ille for several minutes. 🤷🏻♂️ I did get many autographs, and a few sneak peeks.

R84 Interesting, to your point, I was listening to the French Open live radio feature as the tournament was going on, and the various tennis broadcasters were coming up with all kinds of imaginative bullshit when talking about Djokovic. My favorite was the smug correspondent Chris Bowers, who kept insisting that the reason Djokovic is unappreciated is because his talents are so stealth and cleverly disguised and unshowy. Which is false to begin with, and leaves out oceans of other context for why he's so hated.
Made me ill for the tennis journalist class: A whole bunch of power-worshipers, cronies, and ass lickers. And you watch, in ten years, when Djokovic is elected president of Serbia on a full MAGA platform, these same weaklings in the tennis media will clutch their pearls as if they weren't present for the worst of it.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | June 19, 2023 1:35 AM |
R125 every tennis fan has a right to prefer or dislike certain styles of play. Murray who is similar to Djokovic is much more popular despite not being nearly as accomplished. Why? I don't think people care that he's British. His personality off-court is much more likable and he's shown himself to be a reasonable person. Djokovic is a megalomaniac and many people can see it.
It has been a real issue for years in tennis commentary that so many of the commentators will be practically cheering for the same top players to reach the final over and over again. Some of them don't pretend to hide their bias Every day of every slam we hear about the possible record(s) that could be broken.
I'd love nothing more than for Djokovic get knocked the fuck out of Wimbledon in round 1 with a full meltdown on center court causing people to pearl clutch as they did during the trashy encounter between Tsitsipas and Kyrgios last year.

Holger Rune is such a homophobe. He calls opponents faggots. It wouldn't be surprising to discover that he belongs to some sort of organization that hates gays. If not "hate" gays, then at least ridicule or make fun of them. He goes out of his way to do this no matter what he might say, including his handlers. Every backhand, forehand, any shot, is hit with a nasty smirk, a smirk that seems to be cooking up a gay slur against his opponent. Some say that he's secretly gay himself, projecting, whatever. Maybe that's true, but it's a shitty way to go t thorough life.

Nice gesture from the UK's tennis authorities - every Ukrainian player who plays singles or doubles at a grass court tournament this year has been offered accommodation of up to two rooms per player for free throughout the entire grass court season and they get courts, balls and so on to train. It's thought the package will cost up to £250,000.
“Those players will also be offered the opportunity to practise at either the All England Club’s courts or via the LTA at the Surbiton courts between their last match at Roland Garros and the Saturday prior to Qualifying week at Wimbledon,” AELTC chairman Ian Hewitt said.
In addition £1 will be donated to a Ukrainian aid fund for every spectator at the Championships in 2023, a donation expected to be worth around £500,000.

Thing is, Rune is not a homophobe. The same fucking PANSIES create something out of NOTHING!
He's a brat, so far, period. I often root against him, but for reasons of brattiness and decorum, NOT for some trumped up charge. The match from the challengers is not representative. IF he now or in the future displays true homophobic remarks (like Goran Ivanesivic), THEN you've got a case, and the rest of us are wrong.
I think some posters here, in 1964, were pushed into a mud puddle by some jocks, and the taunting they received back then has caused them to lash out at all injustices, real or perceived, since then. It's not Rune's fault that you were bullied long ago.

Don't bother debating with R211, R210. He's omniscient and will never concede anything. Somehow the fact that it happened in a Challenger a couple of years ago lets Rune off the hook, and all of his other offensive behavior is overshadowed by his legs. Makes perfect sense. Rune is just a poor, put-upon, sadly misunderstood boy whose every misstep can be rationalized away.

Guadagnino’s new film, _Challengers_, looks like a very interesting roman/film à clef on the tennis world (and includes a cameo by Mary Jo Fernandez, I presume as herself). The female lead seems to be based on Giorgi (at least physically and how she moves on court), but I wonder about the two male players. From the trailer, it seems there’s more than a bit of male-on-male and m-m-f threesomes—enough to make me wonder whether Guadagnino is a DLer.

Alcaraz is already improving on grass. It's not his best surface but he has a good shot to win Wimbledon some day. He didn't do badly last year when he debuted

Yes R248 "they" slowed down the courts so that Rafa could beat Fed.
Fed, the biggest, most beloved player in the world at the time. The total cash cow.
Sure, Jan.

Lehecka will win against Alcaraz tomorrow. Mark my words. Lehecka is a good player and decent on grass, unlike Alcamug.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | June 21, 2023 10:26 AM |
R252, there’s no doubt they slowed down the grass courts, not only at Wimbledon, but for the entire grass season. They may not have intended to favour player X or Y, but they certainly revolutionised grass court tennis. They were horrified at the prospect of having an entire men’s tournament, dominated only by huge serves, without any rallies to speak of.
Remember that the move to slow down grass (and get rid of carpet) began just after Ivanisevic was booed at the Paris event because the match more or less came down to Ivanisevic’s aces or unreturnable serves and the spectators got very little in the way of tennis.
TPTB at Wimbledon saw that, had a pink fit at the prospect of noncompetitive matches and dwindling international tv audiences.

by Anonymous | reply 258 | June 21, 2023 11:35 AM |
They slowed down the court way before Rafa. That's one of the main reasons Hewitt won at Wimbledon
Alcaraz played pretty well last year at Wimbledon with the exception of his match against Sinner but we know that Sinner always put him in trouble and Jannik's game really suits grass courts
R253 Lehecka is two years older than Alcaraz and he didn't achieve 1/8 of what Carlos did. We'll see if he is really that good on grass tomorrow

Interesting comments during the BBC commentary between Andrew Castle and Feliciano Lopez watching the Alcaraz match yesterday - he spent time in Ibiza after his exit from Roland Garros said Castle. I do remember Wimbledon being quite dull when Sampras was dominating in the 1990s. It started to just become ace, service winner, if a return maybe a 3-shot rally. Federer's classic win over him in 2001 was such a joy to watch, as was Agassi's win in 1992. I do prefer there be more rallies. It does suck currently, though, that Djokovic has become so dominant at Wimbledon. It would be nice to see a new winner this year.

I just watched the first episode of Break Point Part 2.
The screenshot picture is Tsitsipas's ass (in underpants) at about 08:38.
Tsitsy has a kind of a hot daddy masseur.
Kyrgios with his annoying "I know I'm not really accepted" thing but at least the ep does a decent job of showing his assholery as well (like spitting in the direction of a line judge, putting his towels in his opponent's box).
Both Andy Roddick and Tsitsipas do not like Kyrgios and show it.
Ajla Tomljanovic's dad is genuinely entertaining.
Chris Evert says that Ajla is her surrogate daughter (Chris has 3 sons and 0 daughters) and that when she doesn't have a bf, Ajla plays better lol (technically true).
by Anonymous | reply 281 | June 21, 2023 7:48 PM |
All of the courts have been slowed down allowing for more average players with weaker serves, etc. a chance to compete. Show me what you can do when you have less time to react.
2000s & 2010s were peak tennis. The Big Three and Serena. If Break Point had existed back then, I would've watched. Now, both the ATP and WTA are weaker.

by Anonymous | reply 283 | June 21, 2023 8:56 PM |

R254 that's a very reasonable breakdown of what may have happened.
But to think the Wimby PTB would do anything to help Rafa win over Fed is utterly ridiculous. That was what stuck in my craw.
Rafa earned his beloved status by slowly winning over the tennis the world. Nothing was handed to him. Certainly not his two Wimbys and three other final runs.

R284 It used to be different strengths and styles of play were best suited for each GS surface. The greatest champions had the best all around game to win on each surface. Now, there's no real variety because every court has been made slower regardless of surface. It pushes mediocre ball bashers to the front. Thankfully, the different associations are trying to balance it back out again.

Oh, Seb is definitely cute. Sexy young guy, good player, too.
I've been thinking about it and I really think this might be one of those Wimbledons like the old days when one player (Sampras, Federer) was very, very heavily favored and we got an interesting finalist like Pioline or something. I think Novak is going to cruise to the finals and I would not be at all suprised if it's Jan-Lennard Struff or someone like that--someone dangerous on grass who's having a great season. Because Stefanos, Meddy, so many of the others just seem out of sorts. Alcaraz not great on grass, nor Ruud, so forth. My pick is Struff vs Novak. Depending on the draw of course.
The US Open is a totally different story, though. Esp if ND is going for the calendar Slam (again).

by Anonymous | reply 301 | June 22, 2023 7:26 AM |
I also think (or hope) that an unexpected final might take place at Wimbledon. If Novak gets to the final, he wins in three probably; but as R301 writes, there might be a surprise. And tennis needs surprises and needs to get the larger audience interested again. I doubt that we will ever witness the Fedal level of interest but, as a tennis fan who watches TC all day long, it is no longer interesting.

Zverev was good against Shapo. He is one of the top contenders for Wimbledon. Except for Djokovic a number of players can go far in Wimbly: Zverev, Sinner, Rune, Felix... even big servers such as Fritz and Jarry could do well there. I have a huge question mark behind Ruud (sucks on grass), Alcaraz (game not suited for grass) and Medvedev (not impressed by what I saw of him yesterday).

by Anonymous | reply 322 | June 22, 2023 11:35 AM |
Sabalenka's game is to good and imposing to only win one or two slams. The French open choke was bad but clay is by far her worst surface. I think she will keep it together enough to at least win a couple more slams on faster courts.

Regarding Wimbledon, US Open, and, I guess, ATP tour events, how will those of you without cable be watching the events? ESPN + doesn't seem to have its own app whereby one can bypass traditional cable. I'll be investigating more on my own, but am curious as to some of your viewing habits. Another retirement for Il Gingio (against Bublik) in Halle
With Khachanov pulling out of Wimbledon today, and Kyrgios looking increasingly unlikely, will Sinner be the next to drop?
by Anonymous | reply 362 | June 23, 2023 11:12 AM |
Get UP, Il Gingio!
We love you!
by Anonymous | reply 363 | June 23, 2023 11:13 AM |
What is going on with Sinner??
by Anonymous | reply 365 | June 23, 2023 12:53 PM |
Khachanov pulled out of Wimbledon? I didn't see that--I'll have to go find that.
Meddy just lost.
I really think W will be Novak vs some breakthrough unknown who will get whipped. Unless it's someone like Rune or Sinner who surprises with a breakthrough. That can happen on grass for sure, like Maria d. Serena, or Kraijcek years ago...
by Anonymous | reply 367 | June 23, 2023 4:05 PM |
RBA in absolutely blazing to form to take out Medvedev in straights. His usual consistency plus firing winners from everywhere. Very impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | June 23, 2023 4:06 PM |
Is Rune still young enough that his toxic homophobia is still passable and forgivable?
by Anonymous | reply 369 | June 23, 2023 4:09 PM |
When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.
by Anonymous | reply 370 | June 23, 2023 4:15 PM |
I can't stand Rune - his antics, his gamesmanship, his general demeanour on court - and I don't condone the 'faggot' comment - but I take it more as a sign of his weak character and immaturity than a sign that he's definitely homophobic. I'm not saying he's not - just that I don't think a single remark in the heat of the moment is conclusive.
I also think it's a reasonable position not to give him the benefit of any doubt.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | June 23, 2023 4:16 PM |
There have been actual studies that found that homophobic people are more likely to have same-sex attraction (these studies linked up genital response to images shown to the person). So I always side-eye homophobic people and wonder if they're gay.
by Anonymous | reply 373 | June 23, 2023 4:22 PM |
It was a couple of remarks, but agreed that Rune's multitude of character defects and court hijinks makes it easy to root against him regardless of his opinion of homosexuality.

He's an asshole regardless of his alleged homophobia, same as Kyrgios. I just watched the Break Point series. I always wanted to give Nick a break because of what he brings to the game but what a cunt he is, admitting that he acts that way in order to disrupt his opponents. At least Rune has potential for maturity, that ship has sailed for Kyrgios.

Hitlerstache/Minotaur team (Brat/Legz team for the eye candy)
Alcaraz (Garfia) team (Seb team for the eye candy [yes, I’m the weird one who finds him sexy)
RBA team
I don’t like either A. Zverev or Bublik. Is death team an option? A. Zverev is better for eye candy, so I’ll go with A. Zverev team.
Thanks so very much for asking!

RBA is my perennial, journeyman favorite. His goal in life was to be top 30 and he was briefly top 10. His parents died, he has 7 horses and as far as I know, was the first top player to wear 🌈 on his shoe and speak about equality.

I'm glad RBA took out Medvedev but I'm always for Rublev. Zverev I guess because he's hotter than Bublick. Rune & Korda because I'm already bored with Alcaraz.
But never with Penko! But I'll be contrarian and go with Zhu. Rooting for Frenchwoman Garcia at the German Open but mosly - Don't know these women! How the hell did both Rybakina and Sabalenka just lose? Jabeur too but I never rated her.

He said something like that Kyrgios brought basketball culture to tennis and basketball is mostly Black men. It's a stretch for sure but that seems to be why.
by Anonymous | reply 411 | June 24, 2023 2:51 PM |
There is nothing racist in that. People are so sensitive nowadays
by Anonymous | reply 412 | June 24, 2023 2:59 PM |
Yes, it's annoying. Bad behavior / poor sportsmanship isn't a race thing. Have Venus or Coco or Tiafoe or Felix ever had that kind of issue? Nope!

Automatically equating basketball with any race is specious. And pointless since we have so many other reasons to dislike both Tsitsipas and Kyrgios anyway. They're both full of themselves, full of shit, and always above the rules.

Going to be such a fascinating Wimbledon on both sides--I really think we'll have a surprise or semi-surprise finalist against Novak. Zverev is a good pick. I think he can beat Carlos on grass. And then we watch for guys like Bublik, Struff.
I also think Rublev can get to the Final, but I don't think he can beat Novak in best-of-5.

I'll be honest, I found that ad a bit cringe. He always wanted one of those Louis Vuitton bags? It's such a tacky brand to me - however, if they paid me what they're probably paying him, I can't say I wouldn't do the same!
On the women's side, Swiatek had a tough start in both of her first two matches but then appeared to hit her stride for the remainder of the time. I am really hoping that she doesn't just decide that she sucks at grass and gives up but her attitude seems quite good so far.
And Penko is doing well, 7-win streak on grass now.
