Greg do you prefer Cracker Barrell or Bob Evans?

Neither, I suspect. I'm on the road for work this week and in a part of the South littered with mostly chain restaurants. My colleagues and I figured, what the heck, give these two a shot for the first time in my life.

The Cracker Barrell store with all its tchotchkes and candies is a bit of a novelty. The restaurant was dismal. I had two colleagues with me. None of us had been there before so we ordered a sampling of items from the menu to share. I am not some snob above country cooking or comfort food, but everything was exceptionally bland, dry and flavorless from the fried chicken, to the meatloaf, to turkey -- even the sides were terrible. The one thing we all liked was the Coca-Cola Chocolate Cake -- Greg, how does one get cake icing/frosting with what I can only describe as that somewhat gritty texture? I assume that's granulated sugar that's providing that texture? I find it a touch addicting. I suppose most folks prefer a smooth/buttery frosting or icing, but that fudgy, gritty icing was good!

We also stopped at a Bob Evans earlier in the week and that one surprised me. We didn't order family style, but my turkey meal (with the standard stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy) was shockingly good. Well seasoned, tender, flavorful. Even some of the veggie sides we got for the table were so flavorful -- the green beans were sautéed and seasoned so well -- and, unlike so much stuff in the south -- it was all savory instead of sickeningly sweet.

Anyway, I know.... get a blog, Mary!

LOVE Cracker Barrel!

Oh, shut the fuck up, OP.

You don't yell "Here Girl! " to a mangy dog.

by Anonymousreply 3June 15, 2023 8:01 PM

As long as my party is white and not too faggy - Crackers Barrel

by Anonymousreply 4June 15, 2023 8:02 PM

Cracker Barrell is WOKE! I ain't eatin' there no more!

What trash you are, R3.

by Anonymousreply 6June 15, 2023 8:07 PM

I don't love either, but definitely Bob Evans. All I've had at either is breakfast. Cracker Barrell is always a circus.

by Anonymousreply 7June 15, 2023 8:07 PM

The Hashbrown Casserole and Cocoa Cola cake are the only two items I like at Cracker Barrel.

Timmy has several reviews of their food, here is one of his most recent.

OP, thanks for asking, but I’m not familiar enough with either restaurant to comment.

I did once take a group of high school students to a Golden Corral for what we thought would be breakfast but was really lunch. Those kids were so upset that we were eating in such a horrible place and they were right. It was depressing and barely edible.

I do know someone who told me that the Bob Evans prepared mashed potatoes that one can find in most supermarkets are actually quite good. I’ve never tried them, so I have no opinion on the matter.

by Anonymousreply 9June 15, 2023 8:16 PM

OP, granulated sugar causes cake frosting to be gritty.

Here’s a recipe for you.

I should have mentioned that we were on a service trip somewhere in the Midwest or the south I think. As far as I know, there are no Golden Corrals in Massachusetts.

R9 we call the golden coral the pigateria as everyones plates are piled high

by Anonymousreply 13June 18, 2023 1:07 PM

I'm surprised Golden Corral is still around. Like Western Sizzlin it seemed to be a sub-Ponderosa operation that you fiund in small southern towns or parts of the rural Midwest like Indiana. Even people who went to Pnderosa once in awhile thought these places sucked.

by Anonymousreply 14June 18, 2023 1:12 PM

My go-to at Cracker Barrel, OP, when visiting my late parents in the Midwest, was chicken and dumplings, which I liked as a kid. And chocolate milk.

I actually liked the front part of the restaurant, with all of the items for sale.

by Anonymousreply 15June 18, 2023 2:24 PM

[quote] I do know someone who told me that the Bob Evans prepared mashed potatoes that one can find in most supermarkets are actually quite good.

I can actually eat and enjoy a family size of the Bob Evans store-bought macaroni and cheese. It is pretty salty, though, as I always develop a thirst at some point after eating it. The salt isn't really obvious when eating it, though. Good comfort food.

by Anonymousreply 16June 18, 2023 2:29 PM

He's worked at both.

by Anonymousreply 17June 18, 2023 2:32 PM

Cracker Barrel is kinda disappointing but I've found it depends on where you go really. But it's still mostly small portions, reheated tasting and textured food, but an overall nice atmosphere and cute things at their shop area.

Bob Evans has been consistently good from what I've seen over the years. Yes, their turkey and dressing meal is DELICIOUS!!!! just sometimes they hardly give more than just like three forkfuls of the mashed potatoes at some locations, though. They also do holiday meal bundles and their pumpkin pie is delicious. But, if you ever do the holiday family meal bundles, they use a different kind of turkey from their in-store individual meal one for the big version. Its different every year, though.

Definitely Bob Evans. All good food. But found some of the locations in the more isolated areas tend to have lower quality but still good. Way better than Cracker Barrel. Yes, Bob Evans microwaves some of their food but they also mix and prepare there and add things in. Cracker Barrel is bland and tastes like it was microwaved over and over. No real taste. Only thing that kinda did was their country fried steak and gravy or whatever it was and their steak fries. Chicken and dumplings meal was like eating microwaved old tasteless dough and done eating in two minutes.

by Anonymousreply 18June 18, 2023 2:37 PM

I prefer Bob Evans, only because their ice cubes are tastier than Cracker Barrel's taste-free cubes.

But of course, no one turns out a tastier ice cube than moi!!!! Simply the best, better than all the rest. And don't forget what culinary wonders I work with prunes.

by Anonymousreply 19June 18, 2023 2:47 PM

I've only been to Cracker Barrel and I found their breakfast was fine, but I didn't care for their lunch/dinner items.

by Anonymousreply 20June 18, 2023 2:58 PM

..........

by Anonymousreply 21June 18, 2023 3:09 PM

Born and raised in the south, I've traveled all over, eaten in all kinds of places, but never a Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans.

Christ, you people are trashy.

by Anonymousreply 22June 18, 2023 3:38 PM

Bob Evans is a restaurant? I'm in Houston. Never seen one but we do have Cracker Barrel. My 90 yo dad loves breakfast there if you can get in. Always a wait. I've bought some really xmas ornaments over the years at the little shop in front. The breakfast is okay. Biscuits were good but the lunch/dinner is extremely unimpressive.

Matt from Pittsburgh, aka Defacto, is especially desperate on the weekends.

He takes a break from posting racist and anti-democratic pot-stirring posts to cosplay his latest character designed to attract the sympathy of older gay men. Yes, he’s thar pathetic.

No one gives a shit about his latest lame cosplay, so he posts questions to it to pretend people do. Cringe-inducing.

Haha…R12, I’m wrong once again?

When was I last wrong?

I also can’t say I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know there was a Golden Corral in Massachusetts.

You seem easily amused, researching Golden Corral locations.

Quick! Is there a Ponderosa nearby?

by Anonymousreply 25June 19, 2023 12:29 AM

Cracker Barrel. Are they still racist? I know they paid oit a settlement. I'm a total whore for that gift shop and all its seasonal/holiday theming amd decorations (especially between September and December), though I've only ever purchased items two or three times.

But when I went last Fall, the portions were pathetic. I realize this country has an obesity problem, and I'm aware of inflation, but this was on another level. I haven't been back. But I don't eat that kind of food often, anyway.

R12 is a Golden Corral fan. I, on the other hand, would never set foot in a Golden Corral again. It is beyond terrible.

I'm sorry it's in Massachusetts, but happily there is but one location—Springfield, MA.

Springfield is a real shithole.

Springfield as a whole has a 32% poverty rate, which compares to the statewide Massachusetts rate of 11% and Springfield's violent crime rate was higher than the national rate in 2020.

Never go to a Golden Corral, though. Got sick twice after eating at two different ones many years ago and the "fresh" plates they have stacked that you grab from smelled of actual steaming poop that final time. Told the managers and they said they'd check into it and gave us a separate group of plates. Food seemed alright but had bad runs overnight and into the next day, so did my hubby. That was the last time. Read and heard similar kinda stories about Corrals anywhere, so never again.

I do love Golden Corral's fresh rolls, though.

by Anonymousreply 36June 20, 2023 6:19 PM

Are these buffet restaurants? I ate at one maybe twelve years ago and it was disgusting. They squeegeed water off the tables to clean them between seatings. I got one plate of food. It was miserable. I didn't go back for more. The only all-you-can-eat restaurants I've been to since are sushi places at which you can order what you want (there's another kind, where they decide what to give you, and I don't like everything).

I had breakfast at a Bob Evans while sitting at the counter. It was alright. I haven't gone back.

by Anonymousreply 37June 20, 2023 6:32 PM

It's funny you say that, R36. I forgot about the rolls.

Every so often a bell would ring, which was the way GC announced that another pan of freshly baked and buttered yeast rolls were being brought out. They were the highlight of our visit to Golden Corral.

by Anonymousreply 38June 20, 2023 6:32 PM

R37, Golden Corral is a buffet restaurant.

I don't know about Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans.

Disgusting is the right word for Golden Corral.

by Anonymousreply 39June 20, 2023 6:54 PM

I haven't had the pleasure of either.

by Anonymousreply 40June 20, 2023 6:57 PM

I typically don't like breakfast foods but I get a craving for biscuits and gravy once in a while. Bob Evans has delicious biscuits and gravy. I don't know how Cracker Barrell gets away with the wallpaper paste and hockey pucks they call biscuits/gravy.

by Anonymousreply 41June 20, 2023 7:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 49June 20, 2023 8:51 PM

My partner and I would slum it at Golden Corral sometimes in the pre-Covid Beforetimes. We would never do it now, post-pandemic.

The food is cafeteria quality, so you learn to avoid certain things, like pizza. The salad bar was decent and you could make a meal just from that, but I would always get the fries and whatever fried garbage, usually fish or chicken strips, was on offer. Another draw was the soft serve ice cream bar. It was all just basic junk food, really, and plenty of it.

by Anonymousreply 50June 20, 2023 10:00 PM

I just mean you probably think you are beloved — and don’t get me wrong, right now you are that.

But many of us know from experience that this is a honeymoon that never lasts.

Datalounge will eventually turn on you.

by Anonymousreply 55June 21, 2023 5:12 PM

My mom loves Cracker Barrell, so I have to oblige on occasion. I always leave hungry and never eat large meals to begin with. The food is marginal at best and have definitely had more tasty TV dinners.

Thanks for the clarification, R55. However, the truth is I enjoy a polite and friendly exchange on here. For some reason, there are some people who don't like me at all (some even express hatred) and I sometimes resort to responding in kind. I am not proud of this. That said, I am aware of the fickle nature of DL and am not at all concerned about a "honeymoon that never lasts."

I just do what I do. At some point I will tire of the insane comments about my sock puppets, racist tendencies, and my recipe stealing, and likely take a break from posting here, just as I have done in the past. If the whole of DL turns on me, oh well.

by Anonymousreply 59June 21, 2023 6:58 PM

[quote] Beloved? Only in its mind. The thing is reviled.

See what I mean?

There are some horrible, unkind, and probably unhappy individuals out here who feel the need to act like R58.

As many have said, these types of comments probably come from jealousy, but it gets tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 60June 21, 2023 7:02 PM

Cracker Barrel. I love that place more than I generally admit publicly.

Their fried egg and tomato sandwich with a side of hashbrown casserole is quite good. Or the chicken fried chicken.

Golden Corral makes some fantastic Bourbon Chicken, but I thought they went out of business due to Covid. The one in my town never reopened after the pandemic. Also, Cracker Barrel's claim to fame is always being right off highway exits. Most of their traffic is travelers. Bob Evans is absolutely atrocious. Just NO.

I mentioned to my Southern colleagues that I'd had my first Cracker Barrell and Bob Evans experiences recently. They insisted that although most of the food at Cracker Barrell is bland A.F. that their pancakes are very good -- with those crispy, caramelized edges that are a must. I will report back.

by Anonymousreply 71June 24, 2023 3:27 AM

r63, yes, in the Bronx. It opened in 2020, so perhaps they have good pandemic protocols in place. It's about a mile walk from either a 5 train or a 6 train.
