Saw "RENT" the Sunday matinee of the Tonys. We were all sitting on the ground on line waiting for the box office to open when a bus pulled up, the cast came out in costume and got on the bus to the rehearsal. They came back and did the matinee and then off to the awards to win Best Musical.

United Palace is a gorgeous old theater but the stage is fairly small.

12 minutes into the main broadcast, it’s already one of the best telecasts the Tonys have done. Very smart to open with NY, NY.

While the Tonys don't have huge audiences, they do have a reliable live audience. Specifically, a relatively wealthy audience and CBS never has any difficulty selling out premium ad spots for the broadcast. That's why they keep re-upping as the broadcast partner.
