2023 Tony Awards OFFICIAL THREAD

Will it flop without the banter normally written by striking writers?

I think it’s interesting that Jodie Comer is going to win that award for that performance in THAT play!

by Anonymousreply 1June 11, 2023 1:47 PM

It will flop. The frontrunners for best musical and best play are struggling at the box office.

by Anonymousreply 2June 11, 2023 1:59 PM

Ariana Debose without a teleprompter in front of her. I can’t wait to watch in terror this trainwreck.

THE GAY SUPERBOWL!!!

[quote]Will it flop without the banter normally written by striking writers?

It's always flopped before, so why would it be any different this year?

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2023 2:39 PM

With 3 hours to fill on CBS and no script, they can't show more than one number from all the musicals? CBS will always find a way to fuck this show up.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2023 4:28 PM

Will the presenters have to pontificate off the top of their heads what The Theatre means to them? This is going to be a long evening.

by Anonymousreply 8June 11, 2023 4:41 PM

AL baffled why " Bad Cinderella" did not go over on Broadway when it was such a " hit" in London. He probably was really anticipating this year's Tonys.

[quote]There were no Tony nominations this year for Lloyd Webber's newest production, "Bad Cinderella' - a playful, "alternative" twist on the fairy tale. It closed prematurely this past week, ending his decades-long run with a show on Broadway.

[quote]Lloyd Webber said, "I'm completely baffled how a show in London could have probably had the best reviews of my career, what the nerve it touched in New York [was] which made everybody feel so bad about it?"

I hope the winners get as long as they want to make acceptance speeches.

Also, I hope CBS doesn't fuck up the In Memoriam segment by having Billy Porter sing "Somewhere".

by Anonymousreply 10June 11, 2023 4:45 PM

[quote]I hope the winners get as long as they want to make acceptance speeches.

I hope Loretta Young doesn't win.

FIFY, r10.

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2023 5:10 PM

It was nice of Lea to cut her vacation short so she can perform on the telecast yet she's skipping the matinee today.

R11. You failed your award speechifying exam—you get an F! The gold standard was Greer Garson, not Miss Young. Greer’s speech was so long that, in the next decade, she was still making fun of herself when presenting Best Actor to Bogie (his speech was short and sweet).

The Theatuh, the Theatuh-- what book of rules says the Theater exists only within some ugly buildings crowded into one square mile of New York City? Or London, Paris or Vienna?

Listen, junior. And learn. Want to know what the Theater is? A flea circus. Also opera. Also rodeos, carnivals, ballets, Indian tribal dances, Punch and Judy, a one-man band - all Theater. Wherever there's magic and make-believe and an audience - there's Theater.

Donald Duck, Ibsen, and The Lone Ranger, Sarah Bernhardt, Poodles Hanneford, Lunt and Fontanne, Betty Grable, Rex and Wild, and Eleanora Duse. You don't understand them all, you don't like them all, why should you? The Theater's for everybody - you included, but not exclusively - so don't approve or disapprove. It may not be your Theater, but it's Theater of somebody, somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 18June 11, 2023 7:08 PM

My only prediction is that Ariana Debose will reference "Angela Bassett did the thing" in her opening number, possibly subbing in Annaleigh Ashford.

by Anonymousreply 19June 11, 2023 7:51 PM

I hope Aaron Tveit performs 'Zip'

by Anonymousreply 20June 11, 2023 9:44 PM

Will Pluto televise a pre-show? Will there be a red carpet in Harlem? Does Frank di Lella know how to get to Harlem?

by Anonymousreply 21June 11, 2023 9:46 PM

I hope Aaron has a wardrobe malfunction.

by Anonymousreply 22June 11, 2023 9:46 PM

The theater is “in the Heights,” not Harlem.

by Anonymousreply 23June 11, 2023 9:50 PM

Why was Laura Linney snubbed? And it was quite the deliberate snub, with only four nominees in the category.

by Anonymousreply 24June 11, 2023 9:53 PM

If Laura Linney became a man she'd look like William Hurt.

by Anonymousreply 25June 11, 2023 9:55 PM

Pluto TV is showing Liza in New Orleans right now. The Tonys should be interesting. Four and a Half Houts of programming without writers!

by Anonymousreply 26June 11, 2023 9:55 PM

There were only 7 potential nominees in the category, R24, so Tony rules capped the number of nominees at 4.

by Anonymousreply 27June 11, 2023 10:00 PM

Pluto TV?? I know it's only the preshow, but the Tonys are so low rent.

by Anonymousreply 28June 11, 2023 10:02 PM

Even PBS didn't want the Tonys.

by Anonymousreply 29June 11, 2023 10:05 PM

Is Isabelle Stevenson appearing as a hologram to annoy us yet again with her banging on about performers in childrens hospitals and old age homes? Like we give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 30June 11, 2023 10:06 PM

f29 Fuck you, Darlene!

by Anonymousreply 31June 11, 2023 10:07 PM

She wasn’t snubbed for Chrissake. For all you know she had one vote fewer than the 4th woman above her. Get a grip… there aren’t that many voters and there weren’t that many choices.

by Anonymousreply 32June 11, 2023 10:09 PM

Isabelle Stevenson will appear but merely to ensure that Jean Dalrymple remains awake.

by Anonymousreply 33June 11, 2023 10:10 PM

r32, how can you deny Laura was snubbed when her less famous, less talented, more annoying co-star WAS nominated??

by Anonymousreply 34June 11, 2023 10:12 PM

R20 I would rather see Aaron Tveit unzip.

by Anonymousreply 35June 11, 2023 10:14 PM

^Because I understand the inherent limitations of a small group selecting the “best of.” If you had read my post, or read about the Tony process, then you would know.

by Anonymousreply 36June 11, 2023 10:29 PM

Has it started for anyone else?

by Anonymousreply 37June 11, 2023 10:32 PM

If you're watching from your browser, make sure you have AdBlocker style add-ons turned off. I had AdBlocker on and it wasn't playing for me.

by Anonymousreply 38June 11, 2023 10:33 PM

Kimberly Akimbo wins best score.

by Anonymousreply 39June 11, 2023 10:37 PM

You just know Marc Shaiman was shooketh

by Anonymousreply 40June 11, 2023 10:39 PM

Looks like KA will win Beat Musical.

by Anonymousreply 41June 11, 2023 10:40 PM

Skylar Astin is cute.

by Anonymousreply 42June 11, 2023 10:40 PM

Why is Anna wintour wearing sunglasses inside? That makes her look like an even dumber bitch.

by Anonymousreply 43June 11, 2023 10:40 PM

So many empty seats. Do the Tonys not do seat fillers?

by Anonymousreply 44June 11, 2023 10:41 PM

We used to do all the awards in 3 hours. Why does it now require 4.5?

by Anonymousreply 45June 11, 2023 10:41 PM

That was actually a very nice speech from the Some Like It Hot costume designer.

by Anonymousreply 46June 11, 2023 10:44 PM

Barnes was allowed to speak longer than Tesori was. The

by Anonymousreply 47June 11, 2023 10:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 49June 11, 2023 10:47 PM

I would love for Some like it hot to sweep the rest so Marc and Scott losing would stand out even more

by Anonymousreply 50June 11, 2023 10:47 PM

R48 - oh, Lord. What on earth is going on with Lupita?? The silver flapjacks, the head temp tattoo...

by Anonymousreply 51June 11, 2023 10:51 PM

It's kind of odd that the presenters don't get a spoken introduction. I guess even "please welcome xxxx" is written.

by Anonymousreply 52June 11, 2023 10:53 PM

Is Lupita topless?

by Anonymousreply 53June 11, 2023 10:59 PM

As if we know who these presenters are.

by Anonymousreply 54June 11, 2023 11:00 PM

It's weird to watch it on Pluto TV without the between-award presentation banter. I just checked broadcast TV where I live and it's not starting here for another hour.

by Anonymousreply 55June 11, 2023 11:00 PM

R53: Is she that desperate for publicity or roles?

by Anonymousreply 56June 11, 2023 11:01 PM

Is "Good Night, Oscar" a flop?

by Anonymousreply 57June 11, 2023 11:01 PM

R45 it’s for the teevee…

by Anonymousreply 58June 11, 2023 11:02 PM

R55- it’s a 4.5 hour show. First 90 mins on Pluto and the rest on CBS.

by Anonymousreply 59June 11, 2023 11:02 PM

R55 - the first hour is EXCLUSIVELY on Pluto TV. The main telecast is at 8 ET on CBS and also on Paramount+

by Anonymousreply 60June 11, 2023 11:02 PM

Good Night, Oscar has one more chance left, for Best Leading Actor in a Play.

by Anonymousreply 61June 11, 2023 11:02 PM

Christ. Lin Manuel FUCKING Miranda. Time to take a shit.

by Anonymousreply 62June 11, 2023 11:02 PM

R60- first 90 minutes

by Anonymousreply 63June 11, 2023 11:03 PM

and the Tony goes to... FOLLIES!

by Anonymousreply 64June 11, 2023 11:04 PM

I’m liking the absence of chit chat. If this is what it’s like without writers, then ….

by Anonymousreply 65June 11, 2023 11:04 PM

Minor nit, but why can't the orchestra actually play music related to the winners as opposed to some generic tune? For example, John Kander's walking on to accept his lifetime Tony and they can't play any of HIS music??

by Anonymousreply 66June 11, 2023 11:06 PM

That would rely on a guiding script, R66. Stupid, but true.

by Anonymousreply 67June 11, 2023 11:09 PM

R66 Yeah, they should play that tune Chita Rivera gets gang raped to in "The Rink".

by Anonymousreply 68June 11, 2023 11:11 PM

Seven awards in, and we've got three for Some Like It Hot and one each for Kimberly Akimbo, Leopoldstadt, Life of Pi and New York, New York.

by Anonymousreply 69June 11, 2023 11:11 PM

Woah. Casey Nicholaw's husband is cute. Is he... 30 years his junior?

by Anonymousreply 70June 11, 2023 11:11 PM

That Nicholaw guy was cute - waving like a kid

by Anonymousreply 71June 11, 2023 11:12 PM

Bravo to Pluto where I am watching Tony Awards right now!

by Anonymousreply 72June 11, 2023 11:16 PM

I’m in love with that teacher now. What a great humble speech,

by Anonymousreply 73June 11, 2023 11:17 PM

Even if Some Like It Hot wins a boatload of Tony’s tonight, it will still not be a hit.

by Anonymousreply 74June 11, 2023 11:17 PM

The bad news is this award show shows how bad WGA writers are because I think the ceremony is actually better without the dumb patter between presenters that is ever funny

by Anonymousreply 75June 11, 2023 11:17 PM

Only one speech referenced the WGA strike so far.

by Anonymousreply 76June 11, 2023 11:17 PM

[quote]It was nice of Lea to cut her vacation short so she can perform on the telecast yet she's skipping the matinee today.

Saw "RENT" the Sunday matinee of the Tonys. We were all sitting on the ground on line waiting for the box office to open when a bus pulled up, the cast came out in costume and got on the bus to the rehearsal. They came back and did the matinee and then off to the awards to win Best Musical.

by Anonymousreply 77June 11, 2023 11:19 PM

I know they did the same thing last year, but not including Best Score and Best Choreography in the main telecast is idiotic.

by Anonymousreply 78June 11, 2023 11:19 PM

Natasha Katz—8th Tony win for her.

by Anonymousreply 79June 11, 2023 11:23 PM

PGA Golf is running long on CBS. I hope it won’t keep the Tonys from starting on time at 8. I’m sure they will skip 60 Minutes.

by Anonymousreply 80June 11, 2023 11:23 PM

r78 - I could be wrong, but I think they have this thing (or, did, in the past) wherein Book and Score would alternate year to year for which of those categories would make it on to the main broadcast.

by Anonymousreply 81June 11, 2023 11:25 PM

Who is Jerry Mitchell fucking?

by Anonymousreply 82June 11, 2023 11:30 PM

Will this year’s Tonys win next year’s Emmy? To be or not to be, that is the question.

by Anonymousreply 83June 11, 2023 11:30 PM

Good speech from Jerry Mitchell.

by Anonymousreply 84June 11, 2023 11:31 PM

I kinda wish he would have stripped again, though.

by Anonymousreply 85June 11, 2023 11:32 PM

Jerry Mitchell is one of those people that seems really fun…but you just KNOW can turn into a bitchy, bitter Queen on a dime!

by Anonymousreply 86June 11, 2023 11:33 PM

I think Skylar Astin should strip — right now!

by Anonymousreply 87June 11, 2023 11:33 PM

R87 - funny that there were so many complaints about the sound design for Sweeney and it just won the Tony. FWIW, when I saw the show, I had zero issues with the sound. I was in the orchestra (house left)

by Anonymousreply 88June 11, 2023 11:36 PM

It would be nice to get Skylar out of that ugly jacket. Looks like a tablecloth.

by Anonymousreply 89June 11, 2023 11:36 PM

This Nevin guy probably has a hot body

by Anonymousreply 90June 11, 2023 11:36 PM

How did I not know that Jennifer Grey was Joel's daughter??

by Anonymousreply 91June 11, 2023 11:37 PM

[quote] Who is Jerry Mitchell fucking?

Ricky Shroeder who he thanked and who is not THAT Ricky Shcoder IIRC

by Anonymousreply 92June 11, 2023 11:38 PM

For a moment, I thought that was Ron DeSantis frowning in the audience!

by Anonymousreply 93June 11, 2023 11:40 PM

Jennifer Grey looks great for 53. And 63.

by Anonymousreply 94June 11, 2023 11:41 PM

Jennifer Grey is embarrassing

by Anonymousreply 95June 11, 2023 11:41 PM

WEHT to Jennifer's mom?

by Anonymousreply 96June 11, 2023 11:42 PM

Joel Grey was a nepo baby

by Anonymousreply 97June 11, 2023 11:43 PM

Interesting that CBS is profiling union buster David Byrne right before the Tonys.

by Anonymousreply 98June 11, 2023 11:47 PM

I ran into Joel Grey on my first day when I moved to New York 23 years ago. Seemed like a nice man.

by Anonymousreply 99June 11, 2023 11:50 PM

R88, I saw the show two weeks ago and also had zero issues with the sound. I was in orchestra center.

by Anonymousreply 100June 11, 2023 11:51 PM

Your dick was in his ass. I’d hope he seemed nice.

by Anonymousreply 101June 11, 2023 11:51 PM

Just as long as that piece of shit Shucked doesn't win anything.

by Anonymousreply 102June 11, 2023 11:55 PM

Sweeney may take revival. Huh.

by Anonymousreply 103June 11, 2023 11:55 PM

David Lindsay-Abaire is straight??

by Anonymousreply 104June 11, 2023 11:56 PM

FYI Casey Nicholaw's hot bf is Josh Marquette, the Wig and Makeup Designer for SLIH and all of Casey's other shows. You'll not Gregg Barnes did not thank Josh in his eloquent acceptance speech.

by Anonymousreply 105June 11, 2023 11:58 PM

R92, This is the Ricky Schroeder who is married to Jerry Mitchell.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 106June 11, 2023 11:59 PM

I loved the broadcast! It was only enhanced by the lack of obnoxious chitchat and I thought the acceptance speeches tonight were all particularly eloquent and intelligent.

by Anonymousreply 107June 12, 2023 12:00 AM

Not even three minutes into it and I’m already hating it.

by Anonymousreply 108June 12, 2023 12:02 AM

Ariana DeBose looks gorgeous. Yes Gurl.

by Anonymousreply 109June 12, 2023 12:02 AM

Oh, Ariana looks SO much better with the long hair than that weird middle-aged Karen hairstyle she had for so long.

by Anonymousreply 110June 12, 2023 12:02 AM

I always enjoy the Olivier ceremony more than the Tony ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 111June 12, 2023 12:03 AM

Three cheers for Ariana's weave!

by Anonymousreply 112June 12, 2023 12:03 AM

R44, many in the theatrical community are loathe to travel above 96th Street.

R86, I personally saw a teamster order Jerry Mitchell out of his van because he was being a bitchy queen about his driving.

by Anonymousreply 113June 12, 2023 12:04 AM

Ariana is a bull dyke. I think she’s starting to feminize her look more now to get work. Her people probably told her she needs to start softening her image and being more feminine.

by Anonymousreply 114June 12, 2023 12:04 AM

A standing O for our girl.

by Anonymousreply 115June 12, 2023 12:05 AM

Why does Jessica Chastain have such a bitch face on?

by Anonymousreply 116June 12, 2023 12:06 AM

Oh god she is so fake and annoying.

by Anonymousreply 117June 12, 2023 12:06 AM

R116: Because she’s a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 118June 12, 2023 12:07 AM

The show will be a Tribute to Writers!

by Anonymousreply 119June 12, 2023 12:07 AM

R116 - I clocked that, too! Maybe she was hoping for a "Jessica Chastain did that thing!" call out?

by Anonymousreply 120June 12, 2023 12:07 AM

Because she’s wearing a fugly dress R116?

by Anonymousreply 121June 12, 2023 12:08 AM

God, she is so aggressively charmless.

by Anonymousreply 122June 12, 2023 12:08 AM

[quote]So many empty seats. Do the Tonys not do seat fillers?

Are you sure you aren't at a Janet Jackson concert?

by Anonymousreply 123June 12, 2023 12:09 AM

I think she’s doing amazing. She has no script to follow like they always do. It’s all free speech tonight.

by Anonymousreply 124June 12, 2023 12:09 AM

I'm actually finding her a little more tolerable unscripted, funnily enough.

by Anonymousreply 125June 12, 2023 12:09 AM

R123 ummm the room looks full to me

by Anonymousreply 126June 12, 2023 12:09 AM

I don’t mind her. She can dance and sing and she looks a lot better with the long hair. And she’s a lez. And she’s young.

Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 127June 12, 2023 12:10 AM

R126 - that original comment was from the "pre-show" on Pluto TV when there WERE a lot of empty seats.

by Anonymousreply 128June 12, 2023 12:10 AM

She reminds me of Brie Larson and Anne Hathaway.

by Anonymousreply 129June 12, 2023 12:10 AM

I like the host. The uncanned sense is nice.

by Anonymousreply 130June 12, 2023 12:11 AM

She’s doing amazing without a script to follow. You’d be shocked how many of these actors and actresses would go up there and not know what to do without a script. She’s doing great.

by Anonymousreply 131June 12, 2023 12:11 AM

How big is that stage at the United Palace?

by Anonymousreply 132June 12, 2023 12:11 AM

Did that first singer in the NY, NY number have a stroke?? (I think that's the leading man?)

by Anonymousreply 133June 12, 2023 12:12 AM

R127: Oddly enough she’s better unscripted but she CAN’T sing or dance.

by Anonymousreply 134June 12, 2023 12:12 AM

Not sure this performance is going to sell any tickets. Particularly if they're showing the one song anyone knows...

by Anonymousreply 135June 12, 2023 12:13 AM

^Looks damn near tiny.

by Anonymousreply 136June 12, 2023 12:13 AM

I walked out of NY NY at intermission. Dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 137June 12, 2023 12:13 AM

New York New York looks a college production.

by Anonymousreply 138June 12, 2023 12:14 AM

Well she’s no Liza that’s for sure

by Anonymousreply 139June 12, 2023 12:14 AM

It's a shame they can't show off the production design from NY, NY better. Haven't seen the show, but in the press clips, the actual set/production design looks impressive.

by Anonymousreply 140June 12, 2023 12:14 AM

[quote] ^Looks damn near tiny.

It looks terribly small. Almost like the lecture halls at my college. But I'm sure if you said that OR mentioned that Washington Heights has as much to do with Broadway as Newark does I'm sure you'd get cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 141June 12, 2023 12:14 AM

How did this woman get this role?

by Anonymousreply 142June 12, 2023 12:15 AM

Is the period style big pants or does the NY, NY lead actor have a womanly ass?

by Anonymousreply 143June 12, 2023 12:15 AM

I love watching the Tony Awards - it's always fun to see which shows will be posting their closing notices next week.

by Anonymousreply 144June 12, 2023 12:15 AM

What happened on Pluto TV? They're showing Liza With a Z.

by Anonymousreply 145June 12, 2023 12:15 AM

Lea's judging the hell out of that poor NY NY singer.

by Anonymousreply 146June 12, 2023 12:16 AM

R145 - Only the first 90 min was on Pluto TV. The main broadcast (airing now) is on CBS and Paramount+, not on Pluto TV.

by Anonymousreply 147June 12, 2023 12:17 AM

The Tony’s have never gotten massive stages like the Grammys Emmy’s or Oscars because the viewership is always small. The only people who watch Tony’s are people who like Broadway shows and theatre. It’s not like tv or movies.

by Anonymousreply 148June 12, 2023 12:17 AM

Well fuck, my stupid CBS station has interrupted program because there are a few hailstorms in the area. I have Paramount Plus, but it’s just showing that same stream for the local channel.

by Anonymousreply 149June 12, 2023 12:17 AM

Lin-Manuel crying after the "New York, New York" number... Please be serious.

by Anonymousreply 150June 12, 2023 12:17 AM

Some friends of mine are there and despite their typically woke lecturing, they were absolutely bitching about having to go up to Washington Heights….

by Anonymousreply 151June 12, 2023 12:17 AM

United Palace is a gorgeous old theater but the stage is fairly small.

by Anonymousreply 152June 12, 2023 12:17 AM

12 minutes into the main broadcast, it’s already one of the best telecasts the Tonys have done. Very smart to open with NY, NY.

by Anonymousreply 153June 12, 2023 12:18 AM

While the Tonys don't have huge audiences, they do have a reliable live audience. Specifically, a relatively wealthy audience and CBS never has any difficulty selling out premium ad spots for the broadcast. That's why they keep re-upping as the broadcast partner.

by Anonymousreply 154June 12, 2023 12:19 AM

R153, I agree. I know it's early on but so far, so good.

by Anonymousreply 155June 12, 2023 12:19 AM

The WGA should strike every year, just to improve the Tonys.

by Anonymousreply 156June 12, 2023 12:19 AM

I wish Michael Bennet had lived to direct NYNY

by Anonymousreply 157June 12, 2023 12:20 AM

LOVE that there's acting clips! Thank you writers!

by Anonymousreply 158June 12, 2023 12:20 AM

It’s great we don’t have to watch the horrible banter. Thank god for the strike.

by Anonymousreply 159June 12, 2023 12:22 AM

I think I’m fine if awards shows never employ writers again.

by Anonymousreply 160June 12, 2023 12:23 AM

WELL deserved win for Brandon!

by Anonymousreply 161June 12, 2023 12:23 AM

R152 agreed. It’s a very beautiful old theatre. I hope it’s left alone.

by Anonymousreply 162June 12, 2023 12:23 AM

I like that we actually have clips of the performances for a change

by Anonymousreply 163June 12, 2023 12:24 AM

Well, that was probably the best speech of the night!

by Anonymousreply 164June 12, 2023 12:25 AM

Is Featured Actress/Actor like Supporting category?

by Anonymousreply 165June 12, 2023 12:25 AM

Two pigs fightin' under a blanket...

by Anonymousreply 166June 12, 2023 12:26 AM

Samuel L. Jackson was pissed he lost. How gauche.

by Anonymousreply 167June 12, 2023 12:28 AM

Please let there not be a nip slip by Bonnie.

by Anonymousreply 168June 12, 2023 12:28 AM

R167 no he wasn’t. He was trying to hear who won. It sounded muffled.

by Anonymousreply 169June 12, 2023 12:29 AM

Bonnie needed to take a Xanax before the ceremony.

She's shaking like crazy.

by Anonymousreply 170June 12, 2023 12:30 AM

Is Lea having a super heavy explosive day?

by Anonymousreply 171June 12, 2023 12:30 AM

R170: I think more than anything she needs a salad.

by Anonymousreply 172June 12, 2023 12:31 AM

Ugh. Camelot seems shitty

by Anonymousreply 173June 12, 2023 12:31 AM

Loved Brandon and Bonnie in those shows.

Honestly this is so refreshing not hearing the stupid shit they write for people. It’s just performances and speeches. Glorious.

by Anonymousreply 174June 12, 2023 12:31 AM

Any time ANY stage actor says "Knights of The Round Table" they should be obligated to perform this:

by Anonymousreply 175June 12, 2023 12:32 AM

Bonnie + shaking = authentic

by Anonymousreply 176June 12, 2023 12:32 AM

Seeing Camelot sounds like homework.

by Anonymousreply 177June 12, 2023 12:33 AM

This Camelot guy is not very good.

by Anonymousreply 178June 12, 2023 12:33 AM

The writers aren’t making the case they think they’re making.

by Anonymousreply 179June 12, 2023 12:33 AM

No standing o for Camelot

by Anonymousreply 180June 12, 2023 12:34 AM

I had a free ticket to see Camelot in May but didn't go so I could hook up with a hot guy visiting from Italy. I made the right choice.

by Anonymousreply 181June 12, 2023 12:35 AM

Which is why I gave this show a hard pass.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 182June 12, 2023 12:36 AM

How many times are they going to revive stupid Camelot my god.

by Anonymousreply 183June 12, 2023 12:36 AM

That's because we have Social Studies next period R180 and we don't want to be late.

by Anonymousreply 184June 12, 2023 12:37 AM

The things I would do Andrew Burnap. God, he's beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 185June 12, 2023 12:38 AM

Was that Philipa Soo? It didn't look like her.

by Anonymousreply 186June 12, 2023 12:38 AM

God, is Camelot as dull as that looked?

by Anonymousreply 187June 12, 2023 12:40 AM

This is so boring. No upsets.

by Anonymousreply 188June 12, 2023 12:42 AM

Wayne Brady is somehow aging into Idris Elvia’s face.

by Anonymousreply 189June 12, 2023 12:43 AM

Leah's dress is like tomato splatter.

by Anonymousreply 190June 12, 2023 12:43 AM

Yes R187

by Anonymousreply 191June 12, 2023 12:44 AM

When did Michael Arden get so fat! He used to be so cute.

by Anonymousreply 192June 12, 2023 12:44 AM

Did Leah even let Domingo speak?

by Anonymousreply 193June 12, 2023 12:44 AM

When did Michael Arden turn into a double-wide??

by Anonymousreply 194June 12, 2023 12:45 AM

Didn’t Michael Arden used to be hot?

by Anonymousreply 195June 12, 2023 12:45 AM

What happened, CUNT Lea? Did you run out of Max Factor Light Egyptian™ and had to go with what they had backstage?

by Anonymousreply 196June 12, 2023 12:45 AM

Till we meet on Grindr again Michael.

by Anonymousreply 197June 12, 2023 12:45 AM

He said "I'm a faggot with a Tony."

by Anonymousreply 198June 12, 2023 12:46 AM

What did they cut?

by Anonymousreply 199June 12, 2023 12:46 AM

The Tony thread is usually on the third part by now. Where are you, gay theater queens?

by Anonymousreply 200June 12, 2023 12:46 AM

I can guess what was bleeped, but what was actually bleeped?

by Anonymousreply 201June 12, 2023 12:46 AM

R198 - thanks, I'm streaming it on Spectrum and was confused by it locking up and skipping ahead.

by Anonymousreply 202June 12, 2023 12:46 AM

What the heck? What did he say?

by Anonymousreply 203June 12, 2023 12:47 AM

[quote]"I'm a faggot with a Tony."

Groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 204June 12, 2023 12:47 AM

The Fat Ham director is very cute. Who knew?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 205June 12, 2023 12:47 AM

Who is the "Jay" that Michael Arden just mentioned? Is he in a throuple now? Also he's fat.

by Anonymousreply 206June 12, 2023 12:47 AM

What was bleeped from the director of "Parade" after he said he'd been called the "F" word growing up?

by Anonymousreply 207June 12, 2023 12:47 AM

I know where I've seen Michael Arden before. He was the terrorist in Source Code.

by Anonymousreply 208June 12, 2023 12:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 209June 12, 2023 12:48 AM

R200 ummm no lmao.

by Anonymousreply 210June 12, 2023 12:48 AM

R198 thanks …time delay on CBS/Fios

by Anonymousreply 211June 12, 2023 12:48 AM

If I had to sit through & Juliet, I'd scream.

by Anonymousreply 212June 12, 2023 12:48 AM

Everyone who's wondering, see R198.

by Anonymousreply 213June 12, 2023 12:48 AM

R198: “ He said "I'm a faggot with a Tony."”

He sure is.

by Anonymousreply 214June 12, 2023 12:49 AM

R211 they muted it but it came through on closed captioning.

by Anonymousreply 215June 12, 2023 12:49 AM

Dear God. He said he was called the f word countless times growing up then said “now I’m a faggot with a Tony”. They bleeped that.

by Anonymousreply 216June 12, 2023 12:49 AM

Surely he had something else as well…it seemed there were more words than faggot with a tony

by Anonymousreply 217June 12, 2023 12:49 AM

They’ve made Katy Perry sound like a great singer. Which is quite a feat.

by Anonymousreply 218June 12, 2023 12:49 AM

Isn’t Lea going to perform?

by Anonymousreply 219June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

I really liked &Juliet R212 and I went to it reluctantly (a friend really wanted to see it).

by Anonymousreply 220June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

& Juliet number is selling the most tickets of the evening so far.

by Anonymousreply 221June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

"& Juliet" looks like something from a movie set in the not-to-distant future where everything is stupid.

by Anonymousreply 222June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

That was pretty much the important part R217.

by Anonymousreply 223June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

Matt is so lame. Full stop.

by Anonymousreply 224June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

Not if there's a god in heaven R219.

by Anonymousreply 225June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

Yikes, this “& Juliet” number is God-awful.

by Anonymousreply 226June 12, 2023 12:50 AM

Eye of the Tiger? Seriously?

by Anonymousreply 227June 12, 2023 12:51 AM

& Juliet was smart enough not to do a medley.

by Anonymousreply 228June 12, 2023 12:51 AM

What a terrible version of Roar. I can't believe Katy Perry did it better.

by Anonymousreply 229June 12, 2023 12:51 AM

He said to all the kids who teased him growing up, now he’s a faggot with a tony.

by Anonymousreply 230June 12, 2023 12:51 AM

not-too-distant

by Anonymousreply 231June 12, 2023 12:51 AM

This show is so much better without writers. Just show clips, live performances and give out awards. The Oscars should also go writer free.

by Anonymousreply 232June 12, 2023 12:52 AM

I got a free ticket to &Juliet and went because the review in the Times was positive.

I was so bored I mentally checked out like 15 minutes in. I don't remember one thing about that production. Not one thing.

by Anonymousreply 233June 12, 2023 12:52 AM

Is it just me or is there a major taste issue with Broadway?

As in nobody seems to have one.

I know Fran Lebowitz had her quote that the culture changed with AIDS because the discerning audience died with it…but I still think there was good work in the 90s and early 2000s.

But the past few years? Dreck

by Anonymousreply 234June 12, 2023 12:53 AM

Is there enough show to fill three hours?

The Pluto broadcast ended sixteen minutes early.

by Anonymousreply 235June 12, 2023 12:54 AM

[quote]Where are you, gay theater queens?

Probably out hissing at someone or something.

by Anonymousreply 236June 12, 2023 12:55 AM

R234 agree that we lost so many geniuses with AIDS, it’s hard to know what could have been created.

by Anonymousreply 237June 12, 2023 12:55 AM

Ariana's wig is nice.

So is her makeup.

by Anonymousreply 238June 12, 2023 12:55 AM

We are watching the Best Supporting Actress Oscar curse play out live in real time.

by Anonymousreply 239June 12, 2023 12:55 AM

So apparently there’s been so much discrimination in award show presenting that now all the presenters have to be black?

by Anonymousreply 240June 12, 2023 12:56 AM

"I'm a fatty with a Tony who's into water sports!"

by Anonymousreply 241June 12, 2023 12:57 AM

Miriam Silverman isn’t Mrs. Maisel’s mom?

by Anonymousreply 242June 12, 2023 12:57 AM

R240 you must be new. Theatre has always had a lot of black people. Please stop trying to bring race up.

by Anonymousreply 243June 12, 2023 12:58 AM

R237 what a stupid thing to even bring up. What could have been 20-40 years ago has no relevance in 2023. We are in 2023 now. The 90s and 00s are over.

by Anonymousreply 244June 12, 2023 12:59 AM

That's Marin Hinkle, R247. You're getting the Jewish women all confused.

by Anonymousreply 245June 12, 2023 12:59 AM

All the women in the Best Featured Actress/Play category will be on sitcoms in the next year or so. It was a strong category.

But Miriam Silverman absolutely stole the show in Sidney Brustein's Window. The way she wrang laughs out of every line—I haven't seen such a precision comic performance in a long time.

by Anonymousreply 246June 12, 2023 1:00 AM

Is Jay Armstrong with Michael Arden and Andy Meintus?

by Anonymousreply 247June 12, 2023 1:01 AM

So Oscar Issac and Rachel Brosnahan weren’t contenders for a Tony for that Sign in the Window play?

by Anonymousreply 248June 12, 2023 1:01 AM

R246 if you say so. A lot of theatre actors aren’t cast for tv and films.

by Anonymousreply 249June 12, 2023 1:01 AM

Thank God r248. He was not very good live.

by Anonymousreply 250June 12, 2023 1:02 AM

Yes. They were not. Rightly so.

by Anonymousreply 251June 12, 2023 1:02 AM

R240 ^bigot

by Anonymousreply 252June 12, 2023 1:03 AM

So "Some Like It Hot" is the poor man's "Anything Goes"?

by Anonymousreply 253June 12, 2023 1:03 AM

So do you think Brandon Uranowitz will get a sitcom or is he too feminine for film/tv?

by Anonymousreply 254June 12, 2023 1:04 AM

R252 STOP TRYING TO BRING RACE UP WHERE IT SHOULD NOT BE.

by Anonymousreply 255June 12, 2023 1:04 AM

Aaron Rodgers!

by Anonymousreply 256June 12, 2023 1:04 AM

Thanks, r250. I really like Oscar Issac, but I don’t really picture him (or Rachel B) as stage actors.

by Anonymousreply 257June 12, 2023 1:04 AM

Some Like It Hot seemed fun

by Anonymousreply 258June 12, 2023 1:04 AM

I met Uzo Aduba in 2014 after she won the Emmy etc. She was very standoffish.

by Anonymousreply 259June 12, 2023 1:05 AM

I think Brandon will get a TV role. Maybe not a sitcom, but a supporting role on a prestige drama.

by Anonymousreply 260June 12, 2023 1:06 AM

Was there any reason we didn't get to see Borle's drag outfit?

by Anonymousreply 261June 12, 2023 1:07 AM

Having a black lead for Juliet works. Having a black Lancelot and a mostly black Knights of the Roundtable doesn’t. Broadway needs to reign in the diversity for diversity’s sake.

by Anonymousreply 262June 12, 2023 1:07 AM

[Quote] I really like Oscar Issac, but I don’t really picture him (or Rachel B) as stage actors

They each did a lot of theater before they were in film and on TV. Another stupid comment.

by Anonymousreply 263June 12, 2023 1:07 AM

[quote]Some Like It Hot seemed fun

It seemed like Crossfit.

by Anonymousreply 264June 12, 2023 1:08 AM

Oscar and Rachel were Tony contenders, they just weren't nominated.

Oscar was robbed. He was excellent.

Rachel was not robbed. She was weak af.

However—there's still time to see the show and I recommend it. Mostly for Miriam Silverman and Lorraine Hansberry's writing. The play is actually hilarious, with much comic piss-taking of hipster and far-left culture that is relevant today. I've been thinking about it ever since I saw it.

by Anonymousreply 265June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

[Quote] Was there any reason we didn't get to see Borle's drag outfit?

Because the Twitter mob will come after a straight guy in a dress

by Anonymousreply 266June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

R263 he did. But he wasn’t good in this play.

by Anonymousreply 267June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

R260: He's rather feminine and really not that attractive so he'll work primarily on Broadway as well as the occasional supporting role on television.

by Anonymousreply 268June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

R265 bullshit. He was over the top and terrible

by Anonymousreply 269June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

A Buick commercial! I thought they closed that brand down.

by Anonymousreply 270June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

Some Like It Hot looks so... close-but-no-cigar to me... but I'm sure that sold some tickets.

by Anonymousreply 271June 12, 2023 1:09 AM

R262 AGAIN, you clearly aren’t a fan of theatre or Broadway, so you have no business in this thread. Your comment exposes that.

by Anonymousreply 272June 12, 2023 1:10 AM

I really like it that the smug voice-over bitch who says shit like “This is so-and-so’s fifth nomination and first win” when the winners are heading to the stage is sitting in a dark room throwing popcorn at the screen and crying.

by Anonymousreply 273June 12, 2023 1:11 AM

All these black presenters must be making certain audience members' heads explode.

by Anonymousreply 274June 12, 2023 1:11 AM

Did anyone here see A Dour's House? It looks like a miserable evening.

by Anonymousreply 275June 12, 2023 1:12 AM

R274: Broadway has always been more welcoming to blacks and gays than film/tv in Hollywood has.

by Anonymousreply 276June 12, 2023 1:12 AM

I’m a big Broadway fan and have seen a lot of the current shows. So 272 you seem confused. Camelot looked sucky and miscast.

by Anonymousreply 277June 12, 2023 1:13 AM

Common is so fine.

by Anonymousreply 278June 12, 2023 1:13 AM

It's kind of funny that all the Play revivals had the authors' names as part of the title... except "A Doll's House" by the slouch Henrik Ibsen.

by Anonymousreply 279June 12, 2023 1:15 AM

I want to see Common nude. Gorgeous man.

by Anonymousreply 280June 12, 2023 1:15 AM

Suzan Lori parks doesn’t look 60. Damn.

by Anonymousreply 281June 12, 2023 1:15 AM

R277 clearly you aren’t. Broadway and NY theatre has ALWAYS been very colorblind with casting, unless the race of the character plays a role.

Like r276 said, theatre and Broadway (in NY) has always been welcoming to black people, Hispanics, Asians and LGBT people. Films and tv haven’t.

by Anonymousreply 282June 12, 2023 1:16 AM

Aaron Rodgers at the Tony Awards

by Anonymousreply 283June 12, 2023 1:16 AM

I’ve never liked Into The Woods and HATED the movie. Meryl being nominated for that Oscar was a joke

by Anonymousreply 284June 12, 2023 1:17 AM

Who is Aaron’s date??

by Anonymousreply 285June 12, 2023 1:18 AM

Into The Woods was BORING

by Anonymousreply 286June 12, 2023 1:20 AM

Sara Bareilles looks old.

Does Into the Woods contain a stealth message about menopause?

by Anonymousreply 287June 12, 2023 1:20 AM

Topdog/Underdog was one of the best plays I saw last year.

by Anonymousreply 288June 12, 2023 1:21 AM

Into the Woods was very boring.

by Anonymousreply 289June 12, 2023 1:21 AM

R288 agreed. I nodded in agreement when it won tonight. Good choice.

by Anonymousreply 290June 12, 2023 1:21 AM

ITW should have done that "your fault" number. That was so dull.

by Anonymousreply 291June 12, 2023 1:22 AM

You bitches are all so sour! This is the best Tonys show in years, which is really saying something considering the shows are mostly so mediocre.

I didn't care for SLIH in the the theater but thought it came off really well in that number and could sell some tix now and turn into a financial hit even if it doesn't win Best Musical.

by Anonymousreply 292June 12, 2023 1:22 AM

I walked out of into the woods.

Love Bareilles though.

by Anonymousreply 293June 12, 2023 1:23 AM

Bareilles gives off annoying theater kid energy.

by Anonymousreply 294June 12, 2023 1:23 AM

Another Baker's Wife who can't hold a candle to the original, Joanna Gleason.

by Anonymousreply 295June 12, 2023 1:23 AM

Into the Woods - are the costume designers also on strike??

by Anonymousreply 296June 12, 2023 1:24 AM

Into the woods sounds like a description of Brian d’Arcy James’s hairy crotch.

by Anonymousreply 297June 12, 2023 1:24 AM

Who is this dancing with Ariana.? Wait, Julianne Hough??

by Anonymousreply 298June 12, 2023 1:25 AM

Jordan Roth looking like some ghoul straight out of "Hellraiser - The Musical!"

by Anonymousreply 299June 12, 2023 1:25 AM

Grey and Kander should've said a few words. Come on now.

by Anonymousreply 300June 12, 2023 1:25 AM

Did they just have to prove Joel and the other guy were alive for insurance purposes?

by Anonymousreply 301June 12, 2023 1:26 AM

I love Tatiana Maslany, but she always wears the ugliest dresses.

by Anonymousreply 302June 12, 2023 1:26 AM

Justin Cooley is so adorable.

by Anonymousreply 303June 12, 2023 1:26 AM

R303: He’s gay, right?

by Anonymousreply 304June 12, 2023 1:27 AM

Wilson Cruz? Love to see he’s still around.

by Anonymousreply 305June 12, 2023 1:27 AM

I hope Justin has a good career. He’s a real star.

by Anonymousreply 306June 12, 2023 1:27 AM

Is Lea fuming seeing that Alex Newell is not only nominated but won????

by Anonymousreply 307June 12, 2023 1:28 AM

Shameful overacting that Donica fellow.

by Anonymousreply 308June 12, 2023 1:28 AM

Wait - this is happening now? You reap what you sow progressive actors hoping to win awards one day.

by Anonymousreply 309June 12, 2023 1:29 AM

Love Justin Cooley

by Anonymousreply 310June 12, 2023 1:29 AM

R306: I don’t see him getting much in film/tv but I could see him in lots of supporting roles on Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 311June 12, 2023 1:30 AM

Justin Cooley is the cutest cutie-pie.

by Anonymousreply 312June 12, 2023 1:30 AM

A trans woman won best actor?? Confused.

by Anonymousreply 313June 12, 2023 1:30 AM

Ben FUCKING Platt. Time to take another shit break.

by Anonymousreply 314June 12, 2023 1:31 AM

r309: "You reap what you sow"

I was saying just the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 315June 12, 2023 1:31 AM

Alex Newell is a cis man and his pronouns are he/him. He submitted himself as Actor.

by Anonymousreply 316June 12, 2023 1:31 AM

Ben Platt is pitchy

by Anonymousreply 317June 12, 2023 1:32 AM

You knew the non binary freaks were winning everything.

by Anonymousreply 318June 12, 2023 1:32 AM

Platt is a great vocalist.

by Anonymousreply 319June 12, 2023 1:32 AM

She said non binary

by Anonymousreply 320June 12, 2023 1:32 AM

They should've done "Old Red Hills of Georgia' a real feel-good number.

by Anonymousreply 321June 12, 2023 1:32 AM

Platt sounds awful. Who said he can sing?

by Anonymousreply 322June 12, 2023 1:33 AM

I feel bad for Jordan Donica. He’s a gorgeous man and has a good voice but I feel like this Tony awards didn’t do him any favors

by Anonymousreply 323June 12, 2023 1:33 AM

R318 claims he loves Broadway and theatre but acts like this is new. I’m so confused.

by Anonymousreply 324June 12, 2023 1:33 AM

But is Alex Newell good?

by Anonymousreply 325June 12, 2023 1:33 AM

If you're in a category with a trans person you will not win. At least for the next 4-5 years, until actors vote otherwise when they realize they're getting screwed.

by Anonymousreply 326June 12, 2023 1:33 AM

It was funny to see “faggot with a Tony” on the closed captions, even though it was muted out of the show.

by Anonymousreply 327June 12, 2023 1:33 AM

Who is saying Platt sounds bad? Wtf. He was amazing.

by Anonymousreply 328June 12, 2023 1:34 AM

Yes, R325.

by Anonymousreply 329June 12, 2023 1:34 AM

Aaron Rodgers on the red carpet.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 330June 12, 2023 1:34 AM

I can’t imagine paying upwards of $100 to see Ben Platt.

by Anonymousreply 331June 12, 2023 1:34 AM

Samuel L. Jackson's gonna go up there like pissed off Joey Tribbiani when he lost that TV award.

by Anonymousreply 332June 12, 2023 1:34 AM

R324, you’re confusing 3 or 4 different posters. It’s not just one person who you think you’re arguing with. It’s ok for people to have different opinions. It’s still allowed.

by Anonymousreply 333June 12, 2023 1:35 AM

R325 yes. He’s come a long way since The Glee Project reality show and then his short time on Glee.

He is one of the actors from the show who pretty much agreed Lea was terrible to work with. It’s hysterical seeing him win a Tony (something she’s DYING to win) and her cheering him as he walks by her and doesn’t even acknowledge her.

by Anonymousreply 334June 12, 2023 1:35 AM

R300, I thought they were coming out to present. Foolish me!

by Anonymousreply 335June 12, 2023 1:36 AM

Agree about Jordan Donica tonight. He didn't even sound good.

by Anonymousreply 336June 12, 2023 1:36 AM

[quote]You knew the non binary freaks were winning everything.

SUCK IT, BITCHES!

by Anonymousreply 337June 12, 2023 1:36 AM

R333 nope. It’s YOU. Switching accounts on your laptop browsers doesn’t change that buddy.

by Anonymousreply 338June 12, 2023 1:36 AM

Who is that with Aaron?

by Anonymousreply 339June 12, 2023 1:37 AM

Can they ban the WGA from future Tony’s?

Please?

by Anonymousreply 340June 12, 2023 1:38 AM

Loved Alex not even acknowledging that Lea was there. Second best snub of Lea ever!

by Anonymousreply 341June 12, 2023 1:38 AM

Yes. It’s all me. Backing quietly away….

by Anonymousreply 342June 12, 2023 1:38 AM

Why would he bring up Lea and make her remember Glee and remember Cory and make her shit herself crying?

by Anonymousreply 343June 12, 2023 1:39 AM

I'd never seen or heard Ben Platt in anything before. I thought he was fine. Another Cuntessi di Datalounge talent assassination. Don't you male vaginas like anyone who doesn't look like Rocco Steele?

by Anonymousreply 344June 12, 2023 1:40 AM

It’s been so much better without writers

by Anonymousreply 345June 12, 2023 1:40 AM

GET IT GURL!

by Anonymousreply 346June 12, 2023 1:40 AM

R343 no one said he needed to acknowledge her from the stage. He didn’t acknowledge her as he walked by her. Watch the clip.

by Anonymousreply 347June 12, 2023 1:40 AM

It's interesting how useless the writing is on an awards show. They just regurgitate the same thing so much, they can just cut and paste from previous years and get on with it all.

by Anonymousreply 348June 12, 2023 1:41 AM

Skylar Astin blinks alot.

by Anonymousreply 349June 12, 2023 1:41 AM

I miss old actors trying to read the teleprompter.

"What the [beep] does that say?" - Elaine Stritch

by Anonymousreply 350June 12, 2023 1:42 AM

I met Skylar Astin last year. He’s awfully cute in person. He has bad eyesight r349

by Anonymousreply 351June 12, 2023 1:42 AM

Lol his wife???

Sure Jan.

by Anonymousreply 352June 12, 2023 1:43 AM

This guy is STRAIGHT?

by Anonymousreply 353June 12, 2023 1:43 AM

He never heard of contacts?

by Anonymousreply 354June 12, 2023 1:43 AM

Julianne Hough looks amazing. Skylar Astin is always cute.

by Anonymousreply 355June 12, 2023 1:45 AM

Theater guys are like British guys..they fuck with your gaydar.

by Anonymousreply 356June 12, 2023 1:45 AM

Denée Benton!!!!! I already loved her performance as Cinderella in Into the Woods, but she just won the night for me calling Ron DeSantis the Grand Wizard of Florida!!

by Anonymousreply 357June 12, 2023 1:46 AM

If you haven’t watched the new Sweeney Todd revival, please do. It’s so good.

by Anonymousreply 358June 12, 2023 1:47 AM

Really cool staging for Sweeney. That cast is huge.

by Anonymousreply 359June 12, 2023 1:48 AM

Josh Groban sings like an angel

by Anonymousreply 360June 12, 2023 1:48 AM

The Sweeney costumes are terrific.

by Anonymousreply 361June 12, 2023 1:48 AM

R279 why so funny? Whoever controls the rights to a revival can spell-out the credits. Nothing unusual there. Ibsen is in the public domain.

by Anonymousreply 362June 12, 2023 1:48 AM

Three seconds of Josh FUCKING Groban and the audience loses their minds.

by Anonymousreply 363June 12, 2023 1:48 AM

Now that song was great - Sweeney Todd

by Anonymousreply 364June 12, 2023 1:48 AM

I don't get Josh Groban at all.

by Anonymousreply 365June 12, 2023 1:49 AM

Sweeney looked great. Damn.

by Anonymousreply 366June 12, 2023 1:49 AM

Man, that Sweeney Todd number actually made me want to see the show!

Can't remember the last time that happened on a Tonys telecast.

by Anonymousreply 367June 12, 2023 1:49 AM

If only our dear Paul wasn’t booked and busy with tons of films. There was chatter of bringing the Streetcar revival to NY but it’s been put on hold. He would probably be up there on stage again, this time with a Tony in hand.

Critics and viewers alike said if they bring it to the states he is winning the Tony, he’s that good in it.

by Anonymousreply 368June 12, 2023 1:51 AM

Sweeney…fucking amazing. Best thing tonight.

by Anonymousreply 369June 12, 2023 1:51 AM

The Bold and the Beautiful is GOING TO ROME!

by Anonymousreply 370June 12, 2023 1:51 AM

R297, I’ve been there.

by Anonymousreply 371June 12, 2023 1:52 AM

R366 it is. I watched it twice. Loved it. The entire production is top tier.

by Anonymousreply 372June 12, 2023 1:52 AM

R370 with ANDREA BOCCELLI 😂

by Anonymousreply 373June 12, 2023 1:52 AM

Ben Platt oversang as usual. The late Brent Carver was much better in the original production, but he was a better actor than Platt could ever hope to be.

by Anonymousreply 374June 12, 2023 1:52 AM

Sweeney isn’t on tdf but I’ll buy a ticket in the rear mezzanine after that performance.

by Anonymousreply 375June 12, 2023 1:53 AM

I think Sweeney got the loudest reaction from the audience all night so far. I was wondering what number they were going to choose... I think the made the right choice with the Ballad. Even though you only get 30 seconds of Groban (the main draw) because it works the best out of context from the show. I bet they sold a bunch of tickets with that performance.

And, I agree with the other posters, it's a must-see. I was DEEPLY skeptical about Groban's casting and he surprised and thrilled me.

by Anonymousreply 376June 12, 2023 1:53 AM

John Kander is 96, Joel Grey is 91. Maybe they’re not talking so much anymore.

by Anonymousreply 377June 12, 2023 1:53 AM

I’m now excited I have tickets to see Sweeney Todd in July!

by Anonymousreply 378June 12, 2023 1:54 AM

I can’t stand the guy playing Neil Diamond. What the fuck? Absolutely dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 379June 12, 2023 1:54 AM

God Jessica Chastain is one hard looking miserable bitch.

by Anonymousreply 380June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

Who gets the coveted final mention in tonight’s In Memoriam?

by Anonymousreply 381June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

Parade came off to me as weak music and hammy performances with cool scenery and projections.

by Anonymousreply 382June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

They both gave nice speeches during the preshow, R377.

by Anonymousreply 383June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

I just saw Barry Manilow in the front row.

by Anonymousreply 384June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

This is Audra’s husband right?

by Anonymousreply 385June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

Arrivederci, Roma!

by Anonymousreply 386June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

Chastain is probably pissed because she has been campaigning to win tonight but everyone is predicting Jodie Comer

by Anonymousreply 387June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

Please R377. Herding them off like that was disgraceful.

by Anonymousreply 388June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

Who's the vocalist? He sucks.

by Anonymousreply 389June 12, 2023 1:55 AM

This has been the best Tony’s in years.

by Anonymousreply 390June 12, 2023 1:56 AM

The vocalist was fine. He sounds like that on purpose.

by Anonymousreply 391June 12, 2023 1:56 AM

R387: Just imagine how aggressive her Emmy campaign is going to be.

by Anonymousreply 392June 12, 2023 1:56 AM

About two months ago, I said, for you guys to go see Sweeney Todd. You guys said I was full of shit and that Groban is terrible. Now look at all of you.

by Anonymousreply 393June 12, 2023 1:57 AM

Wow, I thought Sweeney Todd was a lock for best revival of a musical.

by Anonymousreply 394June 12, 2023 1:57 AM

Who is the fat lesbian saying she's "a queer non-binary"?

Do these people not realize how foolish they look?

by Anonymousreply 395June 12, 2023 1:58 AM

Tony voters apparently believe we should see Parade first, R393.

by Anonymousreply 396June 12, 2023 1:58 AM

[quote]I’ll buy a ticket in the rear mezzanine after that performance.

"Excellent, that'll be $986.00 - Amex, Visa, Mastercard or Discover?"

by Anonymousreply 397June 12, 2023 1:58 AM

I think Parade was always expected to win. It’s popular and beloved.

by Anonymousreply 398June 12, 2023 1:58 AM

Chastain just drowned Comer in the ladies'.

by Anonymousreply 399June 12, 2023 1:59 AM

The combination of Sondheim vote splitting and the social relevance of Parade helped it win. I have always loved the show, but it was inferior in every way to both of the Sondheim revivals.

by Anonymousreply 400June 12, 2023 1:59 AM

Who was guy with beard who began speaking and was cut-off by music?

by Anonymousreply 401June 12, 2023 2:00 AM

Not to take away from Parade's own merits, but I figured the Sondheim shows would cancel each other out, and it would be a good chance to remember how bad anti-Semitism is.

by Anonymousreply 402June 12, 2023 2:00 AM

Oooo smart way to integrate Phantom into the show. Very smart.

by Anonymousreply 403June 12, 2023 2:01 AM

R400, apparently you and I have the same idea.

by Anonymousreply 404June 12, 2023 2:01 AM

JRB got the bum rush

by Anonymousreply 405June 12, 2023 2:01 AM

Really unfortunate point for the cutoff “Mary Phagan…”

by Anonymousreply 406June 12, 2023 2:02 AM

I think conventional wisdom is that the Parade revival elevated the original production and brought elements that weren't previously there.

Sweeney Todd just didn't embarrass itself.

And both Sweeney and ITW have been revived and performed regionally a kazillion times.

by Anonymousreply 407June 12, 2023 2:02 AM

Josh Groban has a huge cock, no?

by Anonymousreply 408June 12, 2023 2:03 AM

R393 I believed you but I’m poor.

by Anonymousreply 409June 12, 2023 2:05 AM

Angie baby. Very well done In Memoriam.

by Anonymousreply 410June 12, 2023 2:05 AM

So does Alex Newell have a penis, or not?

by Anonymousreply 411June 12, 2023 2:05 AM

Interesting that Paul Sorvino and Melinda Dillon were both left out of the Oscars In Memoriam but included in the Tony’s.

by Anonymousreply 412June 12, 2023 2:05 AM

They both did theatre.

by Anonymousreply 413June 12, 2023 2:06 AM

Wow, that was a whole lotta famous dead people.

by Anonymousreply 414June 12, 2023 2:06 AM

Give it a rest, R411.

by Anonymousreply 415June 12, 2023 2:07 AM

Luke Evans yum.

by Anonymousreply 416June 12, 2023 2:08 AM

Pretty dress

by Anonymousreply 417June 12, 2023 2:08 AM

The trans will win!

by Anonymousreply 418June 12, 2023 2:09 AM

[quote] So does Alex Newell have a penis, or not?

How is that possibly any of your business, you perverted pig?

by Anonymousreply 419June 12, 2023 2:09 AM

And I was correct. Sorry guys in the category.

by Anonymousreply 420June 12, 2023 2:10 AM

I haven’t seen the show - is ghee good?

by Anonymousreply 421June 12, 2023 2:10 AM

Oy vey.

by Anonymousreply 422June 12, 2023 2:10 AM

Billy Porter had a glow-up!

by Anonymousreply 423June 12, 2023 2:10 AM

Ghee is very good

But America is over this stuff

by Anonymousreply 424June 12, 2023 2:11 AM

Oh well

by Anonymousreply 425June 12, 2023 2:12 AM

Josh Groban this year. Hugh Jackman last year. There's no such thing as a sure thing Tony winner anymore.

by Anonymousreply 426June 12, 2023 2:13 AM

Aaron Rodgers in the Tonys audience, nodding along to J. Harrison's speech!

Who's his date?

by Anonymousreply 427June 12, 2023 2:14 AM

Hugh Jackman didn’t deserve to win.

by Anonymousreply 428June 12, 2023 2:14 AM

Must they wear those mics on the sides of their faces in A Doll’s House? Are they performing it in an arena?

by Anonymousreply 429June 12, 2023 2:14 AM

Julie Comer!

by Anonymousreply 430June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

Love Comer’s dress

by Anonymousreply 431June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

Everyone knew Jodie Comer would win. She’s phenomenal. Chastain must be fuming.

by Anonymousreply 432June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

Really glad to see Comer win this. Well-deserved.

by Anonymousreply 433June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

Agreed about Hugh. I just figured that he would win based on being so popular.

by Anonymousreply 434June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

JODIE Comer. Did that lady forget how to read?

by Anonymousreply 435June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

Ghee is pretty good, but not worth enduring the show. I wasn’t a fan of the show or the character, but Bonnie Milligan’s performance was worth seeing for its own sake.

by Anonymousreply 436June 12, 2023 2:15 AM

R434 well it’s good they aren’t giving the award to most popular and giving it to most deserving.

by Anonymousreply 437June 12, 2023 2:16 AM

delighted jessica overrated chastain lost !!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 438June 12, 2023 2:16 AM

Poor Marcia. She had one job and she done fucked it up

by Anonymousreply 439June 12, 2023 2:16 AM

Seriously, Platt or Groban should have won. But Ghee was good too.

by Anonymousreply 440June 12, 2023 2:17 AM

Marcia's face is pulled so tight it's blurring her vision.

by Anonymousreply 441June 12, 2023 2:17 AM

R438: She didn't deserve her Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 442June 12, 2023 2:17 AM

Is this Strangers with Candy?

by Anonymousreply 443June 12, 2023 2:17 AM

Uh, this number from Into The Woods is dull.

by Anonymousreply 444June 12, 2023 2:18 AM

Kimberly doesn't look old enough for the pathos required.

by Anonymousreply 445June 12, 2023 2:19 AM

Hmmm Jodie has a cute brother!

by Anonymousreply 446June 12, 2023 2:20 AM

Jodie is halfway to that EGOT now!

by Anonymousreply 447June 12, 2023 2:20 AM

The kid from "Kimberly Akimbo" was fantastic

by Anonymousreply 448June 12, 2023 2:21 AM

Clark is so damn good. Still can't believe that's the Light in the Piazza lady.

by Anonymousreply 449June 12, 2023 2:21 AM

Loving Kimberly Akimbo

by Anonymousreply 450June 12, 2023 2:21 AM

R443 😂😂😂

Loved Kimberly Akimbo - such a sweet show. And nice they picked a song that featured Justin Cooley.

by Anonymousreply 451June 12, 2023 2:22 AM

indeed, how did chastain win the oscar for that lousy no fun performance as the uber fab tammy faye ??? no one in the biz understood how she got it. . hmmmmm

by Anonymousreply 455June 12, 2023 2:23 AM

Justin Cooley is a charmer. He's going to get scooped up for a big project soon.

by Anonymousreply 456June 12, 2023 2:24 AM

Please go see Kimberly Akimbo.

by Anonymousreply 457June 12, 2023 2:24 AM

Hot Honey Rag was not good. Not at all.

by Anonymousreply 458June 12, 2023 2:24 AM

Kimberly is brilliant. I’ve already seen in three times and going back Tuesday. So happy for them.

by Anonymousreply 459June 12, 2023 2:25 AM

That Marcia Gay Harden SVU episode when they found out the truth about her character was one of their best.

by Anonymousreply 460June 12, 2023 2:25 AM

[quote]Wow, I thought Sweeney Todd was a lock for best revival of a musical.

by Anonymousreply 461June 12, 2023 2:25 AM

Akimbo doesn’t translate to a Tony’s number but it’s a beautiful show. Saw it twice and wept both times. Plus Milligan is genuinely funny.

MARY!!!!

by Anonymousreply 462June 12, 2023 2:26 AM

R456: Maybe on Broadway but not in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 463June 12, 2023 2:26 AM

that queen in the big blue fug gown makes me not want to see that play.......next.

by Anonymousreply 464June 12, 2023 2:27 AM

I think some of you have not been paying attention. Parade winning revival and J winning Lead Actor/Musical are not upsets or surprises. They've been considered the front-runners for a while.

That's not a value judgment. My personal choices would have been Groban or Platt and Sweeney for revival, but the expected winners won.

by Anonymousreply 465June 12, 2023 2:27 AM

ewwww The repulsive and over exposed sam jackson, lordy he is tacky.

by Anonymousreply 466June 12, 2023 2:28 AM

I'm not generally a fan of small musicals, but that Kimberly number was lovely.

by Anonymousreply 467June 12, 2023 2:28 AM

R455: I thought I was the only one. Nobody in the cast has a good singing voice, the characters are unlikable, and the songs are forgettable.

by Anonymousreply 468June 12, 2023 2:28 AM

Oh, wow, now I really want to see Kimberly Akimbo.

by Anonymousreply 469June 12, 2023 2:28 AM

is it racist that there are no all white plays/musicals on bway ?

by Anonymousreply 470June 12, 2023 2:29 AM

Kimberly Akimbo will be performed by colleges and high schools for decades

by Anonymousreply 471June 12, 2023 2:29 AM

One is about to win, r470.

by Anonymousreply 472June 12, 2023 2:30 AM

miss thang not like announcing that leopolstadt won.......funny.

by Anonymousreply 473June 12, 2023 2:30 AM

"is it racist that there are no all white plays/musicals on bway ?"

didn't one just win?

by Anonymousreply 474June 12, 2023 2:31 AM

R470 again, you aren’t a fan of Broadway. Why are you here?

by Anonymousreply 475June 12, 2023 2:31 AM

R474 exactly. That user isn’t a fan of theatre or Broadway. He’s just here to troll.

by Anonymousreply 476June 12, 2023 2:31 AM

Not a bad night for Leopoldstadt. Four wins out of six nominations.

by Anonymousreply 477June 12, 2023 2:32 AM

Ugh Leopoldstadt is an utter snoozefest.

by Anonymousreply 478June 12, 2023 2:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 480June 12, 2023 2:34 AM

A Best Play-winning utter snoozefest.

by Anonymousreply 481June 12, 2023 2:34 AM

Loved Leopoldstadt, but Between Riverside and Crazy and Fat Ham were also excellent.

Parade is NOT a surprise winning.

by Anonymousreply 482June 12, 2023 2:34 AM

Shucked looks like shit.

by Anonymousreply 483June 12, 2023 2:35 AM

what 2 shows should i see when im in nyc next month?

by Anonymousreply 484June 12, 2023 2:35 AM

Parade was always expected to win lmao.

by Anonymousreply 485June 12, 2023 2:35 AM

whts the target audience of shucked? rural county folks from iowa?????? looks unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 486June 12, 2023 2:36 AM

I’m glad Raquel Welch made it right to the end of the In Memorium, a good spot, it takes a gay to make something pretty

by Anonymousreply 487June 12, 2023 2:36 AM

Shucked is funny.

by Anonymousreply 488June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

Kimberly Akimbo if it’s still open r484.

This singing about corn is horrific.

by Anonymousreply 489June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

Yes, but did she get the exact ending? I think not.

by Anonymousreply 490June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

Corn? When did I eat corn?

by Anonymousreply 491June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

This should've been cut for time.

by Anonymousreply 492June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

shucked looks like a high school play.

by Anonymousreply 493June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

"And now there this bullshit about corn."

No. That's human shit.

by Anonymousreply 494June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

R486 people who love musicals. You don’t have to be from a rural place to watch a musical in NYC.

by Anonymousreply 495June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

Good lord, this corn thing looks stupid.

by Anonymousreply 496June 12, 2023 2:37 AM

Corn...bring it to a bris?

by Anonymousreply 497June 12, 2023 2:38 AM

Carol Channing would have loved Shucked.

Funny they went from Stoppard talking about the need to value the writers of theatre more to the corn song.

by Anonymousreply 503June 12, 2023 2:39 AM

I'll never understand the logic of having superfluous (c'mon, Shucked is *not* going to win) performances in the last half-hour.

by Anonymousreply 504June 12, 2023 2:39 AM

The Broadway of Dreamgirls, Sunday in the Park With George and Evita….is now the Broadway of Corn

by Anonymousreply 505June 12, 2023 2:40 AM

Aaron Rodgers is really paintin' the town...

Knicks to Rangers to Taylor to...the Tonys!

by Anonymousreply 508June 12, 2023 2:41 AM

He’s there with his friends. Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 509June 12, 2023 2:42 AM

Is Shucked the first Tony awards performance with multiple (literal) bowel movement references?

by Anonymousreply 510June 12, 2023 2:42 AM

Now I want to see the entire cast of Leopoldstadt perform that corn number from Shucked.

by Anonymousreply 511June 12, 2023 2:42 AM

R470. Fuck off bigot.

by Anonymousreply 512June 12, 2023 2:42 AM

Shucked.

by Anonymousreply 513June 12, 2023 2:43 AM

I didn't love Kimberly Akimbo, but at least it kept Best Score and Best Book away from Shucked.

by Anonymousreply 514June 12, 2023 2:43 AM

how in fuck could something like Corn be on bway??????

by Anonymousreply 515June 12, 2023 2:43 AM

Well, we won't need a second thread ...

by Anonymousreply 516June 12, 2023 2:43 AM

is Shucked closing soon?

by Anonymousreply 517June 12, 2023 2:43 AM

Time to take another shit. CUNT Lea's up at bat.

by Anonymousreply 518June 12, 2023 2:44 AM

Melissa Etheridge looks like she ate Christina Applegate.

The fat Christina Applegate.

by Anonymousreply 519June 12, 2023 2:44 AM

Victoria Clark is so lovely.

by Anonymousreply 520June 12, 2023 2:45 AM

I wonder how close it was between Jessica and Jodie and Annaleigh and Victoria

by Anonymousreply 521June 12, 2023 2:45 AM

why is melissa and barry even on the show ?????

by Anonymousreply 522June 12, 2023 2:46 AM

She's 62, R519. What were you expecting?

by Anonymousreply 523June 12, 2023 2:46 AM

Barry's got a musical coming up. Melissa's doing a residency at the Circle in the fall.

by Anonymousreply 524June 12, 2023 2:47 AM

omg that ole queen m broderick.

by Anonymousreply 525June 12, 2023 2:48 AM

BULLSHIT -- WENDELL PIERCE WAS ROBBED!

by Anonymousreply 526June 12, 2023 2:49 AM

sean hayes yay !!!!!!! (omg the blacks aint clappin)

by Anonymousreply 527June 12, 2023 2:49 AM

Fuck that. Just Jack, fuck it.

by Anonymousreply 528June 12, 2023 2:49 AM

Damn, I like Sean Hayes but really wanted SMH to win.

by Anonymousreply 529June 12, 2023 2:49 AM

R527 bigot!

by Anonymousreply 530June 12, 2023 2:50 AM

Sean Hayes is the joke win of the night.

by Anonymousreply 531June 12, 2023 2:50 AM

Is there no one else capable of presenting an award with Nathan Lane other than Matthew Broderick?

by Anonymousreply 532June 12, 2023 2:50 AM

Theyr both so repulsive

by Anonymousreply 533June 12, 2023 2:50 AM

No

by Anonymousreply 534June 12, 2023 2:51 AM

Wow, Sean's voice is shot.

by Anonymousreply 535June 12, 2023 2:51 AM

R526 I said the same. He should have won.

by Anonymousreply 536June 12, 2023 2:51 AM

R527 keeps trolling racist shit and then replying bigot to himself. Dude. Why are you here? GET A JOB.

by Anonymousreply 537June 12, 2023 2:52 AM

Sean Hayes was the "Pia Zadora" win of the night -- I saw all those clips of Hollywood A-listers/backers at that premiere!

by Anonymousreply 538June 12, 2023 2:52 AM

First Corn, now Cunt!

by Anonymousreply 539June 12, 2023 2:52 AM

ick that mean broad playin fannie brice

by Anonymousreply 540June 12, 2023 2:52 AM

Sean Hayes didn’t deserve that win and I actually like him fine. That was a ridiculous win.

by Anonymousreply 541June 12, 2023 2:53 AM

Lea Michele would be more impressive if she made the song her own and wasn't just aping Bab's performance. I mean, she even shouts the same words.

by Anonymousreply 542June 12, 2023 2:54 AM

I love Sean!

by Anonymousreply 543June 12, 2023 2:54 AM

YAY SHAUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 544June 12, 2023 2:54 AM

So this is the second time Lea Michele has performed "Don't Rain on my Parade" at the Tony Awards? Okay.

by Anonymousreply 545June 12, 2023 2:54 AM

LEA MICHELLE IS LIP SYNCING....

by Anonymousreply 546June 12, 2023 2:54 AM

Damn, did the conductor have to pee?!

by Anonymousreply 547June 12, 2023 2:55 AM

Lea is clearly lip synching.

by Anonymousreply 548June 12, 2023 2:55 AM

Standing ovation.

by Anonymousreply 549June 12, 2023 2:55 AM

All the racists pissed off about Sean winning.

by Anonymousreply 550June 12, 2023 2:56 AM

She looked pissed at the end. Only like 10% of the audience stood up. She was expecting a standing O

by Anonymousreply 551June 12, 2023 2:56 AM

That was a really good performance. Second best after Sweeney Todd

by Anonymousreply 552June 12, 2023 2:56 AM

A standing ovation with half the house seated.

by Anonymousreply 553June 12, 2023 2:56 AM

Poor Stephen. He deserved it for Between Riverside.

Sean’s piano playing was truly impressive, but the acting, writing and role were not.

Stephen gave a masterful performance after a lifetime in the theater

by Anonymousreply 554June 12, 2023 2:56 AM

[quote]Standing ovation.

More or less...

by Anonymousreply 555June 12, 2023 2:57 AM

R550 no. Because we aren’t mad a white person won. You are the only one bringing up race over and over. How strange that you only think about race

by Anonymousreply 556June 12, 2023 2:57 AM

^see how open bigotry works —that’s R554 in action

by Anonymousreply 557June 12, 2023 2:57 AM

Sean Hayes is the Jesse Tyler Ferguson win of the night.

by Anonymousreply 558June 12, 2023 2:57 AM

R553 not even. Literally only like 10% stood up.

by Anonymousreply 559June 12, 2023 2:57 AM

SMH was so good in Riverside. Crazy good.

by Anonymousreply 560June 12, 2023 2:58 AM

Lea wasn’t lip syncing (was she?)

by Anonymousreply 561June 12, 2023 2:58 AM

Any show where you have to hold a mic the entire time should not qualify as a " Broadway musical"

Take that shit to Disneyland.

by Anonymousreply 562June 12, 2023 2:59 AM

Apologies to R554

Corrected: ^see how open bigotry works —that’s R550 in action

by Anonymousreply 563June 12, 2023 2:59 AM

Best Tony’s in a long time.

Fun watching with you bitches. Goodnight 😘

by Anonymousreply 564June 12, 2023 3:00 AM

HOW IN FUK DID AKIMBO WIN??????? its fit only for jr high regionals....

by Anonymousreply 565June 12, 2023 3:00 AM

Who was that nobody lady who said she was the host ?

by Anonymousreply 566June 12, 2023 3:01 AM

Lachanze won twice, yes?

by Anonymousreply 567June 12, 2023 3:01 AM

LaChanze won a Tony for Kimberly Akimbo. Did she win another earlier?

by Anonymousreply 568June 12, 2023 3:01 AM

Just like that we went from Some Like Us Hot to Some Like Us NOT

by Anonymousreply 569June 12, 2023 3:01 AM

Thank you r545. My husband said I was delusional when I made that observation.

by Anonymousreply 570June 12, 2023 3:01 AM

I had a ball with you guys. Same time next year.

by Anonymousreply 571June 12, 2023 3:02 AM

I'm thinking Camelot, Shucked and New York, New York will post closing notices soon. The folks at & Juliet can't be thrilled, either.

by Anonymousreply 572June 12, 2023 3:02 AM

twas not a standing ovation. git real. and yep she lip synced. she loathed by bway.

by Anonymousreply 573June 12, 2023 3:02 AM

Great show. It was a pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 574June 12, 2023 3:02 AM

So LaChanze is the night's big winner? Producer for Topdog/Underdog and Kimberly Akimbo?

by Anonymousreply 575June 12, 2023 3:03 AM

SLIH was truly mediocrity personified. A slightly above average musical and nothing more.

Kimberly Akimbo was the only truly great musical of the season. It’s been a dud of a year. Hopefully next season will be better, but Grey House and Once Upon a One More Time have not been promising starts!

by Anonymousreply 576June 12, 2023 3:03 AM

shocked Shucked made it this far.....good god.

by Anonymousreply 577June 12, 2023 3:03 AM

I thought that was a fabulous Tonys. I enjoyed every minute. Leave it to the theater community to show the world how to put on a show without writers.

by Anonymousreply 578June 12, 2023 3:04 AM

I enjoyed this thread! Thanks everyone!!

by Anonymousreply 579June 12, 2023 3:04 AM

R571 glad you had a ball constantly trying to bring race up where it doesn’t fit. Yet you claim you’ve been going to theatre and Broadway for many years.

by Anonymousreply 580June 12, 2023 3:04 AM

integration seems to have ruined bway.....look at the shows. sad

by Anonymousreply 581June 12, 2023 3:05 AM

Broadway shows in New York have always been integrated.

by Anonymousreply 582June 12, 2023 3:06 AM

Lea Michele didn't lip-sync. She semi-cracked near the end, and the final note was straight tone that she kept on track by the skin of her teeth. A pre-recorded track? I think not.

by Anonymousreply 583June 12, 2023 3:06 AM

I really hope the Oscars and the Emmys (and future Tonys shows) learned something tonight. I did not miss the writers at all (and I wonder if this will work against their negotiations)

by Anonymousreply 584June 12, 2023 3:06 AM

This fucker talks so much yet doesn’t know shit about New York, yet alone New York Broadway

by Anonymousreply 585June 12, 2023 3:07 AM

R581: Integration ruins everything.

by Anonymousreply 586June 12, 2023 3:07 AM

No more writers for award shows ever again! So much better without them.

by Anonymousreply 587June 12, 2023 3:09 AM

glad im old enuf to remember when bway was fabulous and not all preachy weachy.....and quota obsessed.

by Anonymousreply 588June 12, 2023 3:10 AM

Lea Michelle IS Barbra Streisand IS FunnyGirl!

by Anonymousreply 589June 12, 2023 3:11 AM

R588 you aren’t. Once again lying. Black people have always been on Broadway. Moron.

by Anonymousreply 590June 12, 2023 3:12 AM

I wanted Wendell Pierce to win, too.

by Anonymousreply 591June 12, 2023 3:12 AM

Bear awards show I’ve seen in ages. Crisp. You see more of what’s nominated. Done on time.

by Anonymousreply 592June 12, 2023 3:13 AM

Best

by Anonymousreply 593June 12, 2023 3:13 AM

It was a great show and I thought Ariana did a wonderful job under the circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 594June 12, 2023 3:14 AM

R591 he should have won. It’s actually ridiculous they gave it to Sean Hayes.

by Anonymousreply 595June 12, 2023 3:14 AM

Wendell was great. Clarke should have been nominated too.

Lead actor in a play was a tough category. Everyone was strong. And Marcel Spears wasn’t even nominated.

Poor Fat Ham. Came away with nothing.

by Anonymousreply 596June 12, 2023 3:14 AM

The voters were boring and conservative. As predicted, the overrated KA and overrated Leopoldstadt won musical and play respectively.

by Anonymousreply 597June 12, 2023 3:15 AM

the ratings will once again decline.....bway is so fukd. bummer

by Anonymousreply 598June 12, 2023 3:15 AM

The weakest link in the Lead Actor in a Play won.

by Anonymousreply 599June 12, 2023 3:15 AM

the looks on sam jackson and that big momma's face when leopolstadt won were so gr8

by Anonymousreply 600June 12, 2023 3:16 AM

This "New York, New York" number looks like a parody of a Broadway musical

by Anonymousreply 601June 12, 2023 3:17 AM

Let’s wrap it up, gang.

by Anonymousreply 602June 12, 2023 3:17 AM

Only DL pays close attention to Tony ratings. As stated far upthread, the only people who watch the Tony’s are theatre and musical fans and those who study it or work in it. It isn’t a broad stroke like films or television or music.

And as stated upthread, the ratings don’t really matter for it which is why CBS holds onto it annually.

by Anonymousreply 603June 12, 2023 3:17 AM

R591 He should have worn drag.

by Anonymousreply 604June 12, 2023 3:17 AM

[quote][R571] glad you had a ball constantly trying to bring race up where it doesn’t fit. Yet you claim you’ve been going to theatre and Broadway for many years.

I did? You got your posters confused silly bitch.

by Anonymousreply 605June 12, 2023 3:18 AM

In the Netherlands their annual Musical Awards Gala gives out an awatd for a big scale musical and another for a small scale musicals. I bet the SLIH producers wish the Tonys had gone the Dutch way.

by Anonymousreply 606June 12, 2023 3:19 AM

It's been a while since I've seen the movie version of NY,NY, but isn't the lead actress character supposed to be a *good* singer?

by Anonymousreply 607June 12, 2023 3:19 AM

Wow, the Klan grannies came out in force…who knew they’d watch the Tonys? Any port in a storm for the Klannies.

by Anonymousreply 608June 12, 2023 3:19 AM

J. Harrison Ghee looked ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 609June 12, 2023 3:20 AM

Looking ridiculous seems to be the point, increasingly.
