What are the best second-tier Merchant-Ivory films?
I've seen the 'big' Merchant-Ivory films -- Howard's End, Remains of the Day, Room With a View. As well as Maurice. And, of course, I've seen Call Me By Your Name, for which Ivory won the Oscar for his screenplay.
Most of their output from the mid 90s and on had a mixed reception, but sometimes there are some hidden jewels.
Any must-see films from the Ivory/Merchant cannon pre-Room With a View or post-Remains of the Day?

Pity they never filmed the story of young Baron Gottfried von Cramm and his lover Manasse Herbst. I got to know James Ivory when I was in college, just before he hit it really big. I later visited a few times at the Van Rensselaer House and pitched the Von Cramm story along with Prince Yusupov and they liked the von Cramm. Yusupov would have been splendid, as well. I like the nasty little Savages. I think their greatest creation is with Sam West as Leonard Bast, which is better than the movie itself. They did so well with young male characters. Less so with the women, in my opinion.

I quite liked "The Golden Bowl," but I can never find it online.
The Thomas Jefferson & Picasso movies were awful.

I didn't completely hate Slaves of New York, but it was a fucking chore to sit through. Killer soundtrack though.

I think SAVAGES is pretty awful.
MR. & MRS. BRIDGE is worth seeing for Newman's and Woodward's performances.
QUARTET is interesting for the first 2/3 but loses steam, mostly because Adjani's character becomes a bore.

I liked The Bostonians. Bisexual love triangle with Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Reeve and Madeline Potter. Jessica Tandy also makes an appearance. Reeve's character is despicable, but he was definitely at his hottest here.

Savages is formal and very much a film buff's film. A reverse telling of El ángel exterminador. It's a not a wet dream. I like it though I wouldn't argue its a great film rather its a slap dash film by a young director that manages a large cast and he figures out what to do for his subsequent "estate" movies.
