Cinematic king of homoeroticism Marco Berger is back!
While his films aren't generally explicit, he is SO good at building up palpable sexual tension between his male characters in films like Plan B, Hawaii, Taekwondo and The Blonde One.
The Blonde One is ESPECIALLY hot.
His new film Horseplay is getting a brief US theatrical release now, apparently. I'll wait for streaming.

I really like Berger. His movies are so hot! The Blonde One is my favorite, followed by Hawaii and Young Hunter. I'm surprised to hear that his latest is getting a theatrical release. It must be playing on two screens. In any case, I'll just wait for it to hit Dekkoo, because I'm sure it won't be playing near me.

I want him to make a Blond One sequel, in which Little Ornella decides to find daddy a nice boyfriend.

Most of his movies are a tease. Blond One was noteworthy because the characters actually go ahead and fuck halfway through the movie rather just teasing it the whole time. That said, I do think all his movies are worth watching. Loved Hawaii.
I don't think this is getting a real theatrical distribution just been doing the festival circuit in America. Should come to Amazon soon I imagine.

Try not to ready too much about the film. I, unfortunately, read a new interview with Berger about the film and there were zero spoiler warnings. I'm still looking forward to seeing the film, but the interview kind of ruined what I think was the intended and perhaps unexpected theme of Horseplay which, at least according to the interview, only slowly reveals itself over the course of the film.

I've liked all of Berger's films except Young Hunter, which was way too dark.
Sorry, I just found the theme offensive.

I like his 'slow burn' (rather than 'tease') films. He's not making porn, so the journey is the point.

R7 - not familiar with that one

[R9] 'Young Hunter' is Berger's last film before this one. It's about a teenage boy who gets involved with an older man, and everything is not as it seems. I would have thought it would be a favorite here on DL.

I assume Younger Hunter was Berger trying something beyond his usual slow-burn relationship scenarios, but the thing is, he's really good at those; vague thrillers not so much.

The kid in Young Hunter was deceptively led on and exploited. Thus, my distaste.
If I'm being a prude, so be it.

I've seen it since starting this thread. Meh. His earlier films were better.

R6 While "a plot" does emerge, it's not a surprise, and actually the ending seemed a little too expected, too easy, abrupt... Berger's intent was to leave viewers feel that "abruptness" as representative of how quickly life can change, escalate... how all the toxic, latent-homo energy in much of guy-guy "horseplay" has a very dark side that can flare up dangerously,
Berger is a great director - as a card-carrying homo, of course I love the lingering camera, placed at just the right angles to look up the openings in shorts, to see the thick and visible penis lines, to gaze at armpits and treasure trails... and the films full of beautiful young men with great bodies not cookie-cut out of gyms. But there's more: his camera always seems detached, an observer, few tracking shots, low angle, close up of hands and objects and the unadorned corners of rooms... Robert Bresson or his American acolyte Paul Schrader. His camera coldly deconstructs a scene... cool and longing both.
I do think Un Rubio (too often inexplicably translated as the "The Blonde One" - rubio not rubia guaranteeing it means blond not blonde) was his best.... but Horseplay was better than I expected, given some of the reviews.
And, for the cheap seats, lots of Argentine dick on display... surrealistically... no group of "heterosexual" friends would spread their legs and show each other their penises like in this film. Not objecting...

Agree OP at r16.
Everything Marco Berger film is worth watching for the way he makes love to the male body, but other than that this movie was a fairly weak effort. Certainly nowhere close to Hawaii and The Blonde One.

Just seen it. It was a sort of pair with Taekwondo, but whereas the group of friends in the latter were broadly likeable and mutually supporting, reflecting perhaps the central character/host of the holiday, this group was much more spiteful and fucked up, also reflecting the host.

Yeah, R24, I was trying to keep it open for people that hadn't seen it already.

i.e., Horseplay
The Blonde One was good. Especially liked the sweet ending with the daughter.

Yes The Blonde One was really good. I also liked Taekwondo. I haven’t seen horseplay yet though.

The Blonde One also, unlike most (all?) of his other films, goes beyond homoeroticism and/or implied contact and has sizzling hot sex scenes. For those who are into that sort of thing.

Which of his movies has the best full frontal male nudity?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 23, 2023 1:22 PM

Taekwondo has more people nude; the Blond One longer and more intimate nude scenes for the two leads. There's quite a lot in Horseplay, but more Taekwondo-style. Hawaii has a couple of blink and you miss scenes for the two leads. Absent and Young Hunter are more discreet, probably because of the younger age of some of the leads.

While there are plenty of hot men in his film, few of them are... model hot. Really, what Berger is so good at is building up the tension, the desire, the sense of longing and only occasionally fulfilling it.

I'd say one of the (many) reasons I love his films is that he uses regular/normal looking men, i.e. not models.
A bit more like real life, rather than the fantasies, projections, or dreams of a director, as is the case with many gay movies.

His men are attractive, but not obviously way out of reach.

In Horseplay the men are hot, but too many of them have terrible hairstyles and that ruins it for superficial old me.

'The Blond One', as R27 mentions, has one of the best coming out scenes in any movie I've ever seen. Sweet, gentle, honest, and real.

Plan B is also a good early one of his. Plenty of sexual tension in this one. No big 'release' of that tension the way The Blond One achieves.
