Mary Reilly (1996)

American gothic horror film directed by Stephen Frears and starring Julia Roberts and John Malkovich. It was written by Christopher Hampton and adapted from the 1990 novel of the same name by Valerie Martin (itself inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde).

Glenn Close as Mrs. Farraday

So—what about it?

by Anonymousreply 2June 6, 2023 7:51 AM

No thread on it and I watched it yesterday. Was better than its reputation. It must be one of Julia's Brit3.

by Anonymousreply 3June 6, 2023 7:54 AM

I always hated the trailer where they kept whispering the title. Roberts looked pale and sickly and it was during her flop movie period so I had no interest in seeing it at the time but now it looks like it might be worth a look.

That mouth is terrifying, like staring into the abyss

by Anonymousreply 5June 6, 2023 2:08 PM

R5, Julia Roberts [italic]is[/italic] the abyss.

by Anonymousreply 6June 6, 2023 2:16 PM

Glenn Close steals the movie, but there isn't much of. a movie to steal.

by Anonymousreply 7June 6, 2023 2:30 PM

So, so bad....Her career was in trouble until "My Best Friend's Wedding" came along. I mean..."Michael Collins," anyone?

by Anonymousreply 8June 6, 2023 2:44 PM

God, she's ugly without a mop of hair.

by Anonymousreply 9June 6, 2023 2:49 PM

Her accent was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 10June 6, 2023 2:53 PM

Any truth to the rumors that Julia and Glenn bumped heads during filming?

by Anonymousreply 11June 6, 2023 3:00 PM

The whispered title was something my friends and I would repeat whenever referencing a movie we hated.

by Anonymousreply 12June 6, 2023 3:42 PM

Two John Malkovich's for the price of admission.

They should have just cast Mia Farrow.

by Anonymousreply 15June 6, 2023 6:10 PM

Stephen Frears is pretty erratic.

by Anonymousreply 16June 6, 2023 6:40 PM

This movie was awful and laughable.

by Anonymousreply 17June 6, 2023 7:52 PM

Yes it took a while for someone to comment on the similarity in looks between Jekyll and Hyde both played by Malkovich in lizard mode.

by Anonymousreply 18June 6, 2023 8:07 PM
Any truth to the rumors that Julia and Glenn bumped heads during filming?

God I was terrified you were going somewhere else with that sentence

by Anonymousreply 19June 7, 2023 12:35 AM

How was it “American gothic”? Wasn’t it set in England?

by Anonymousreply 20June 7, 2023 12:43 AM

If you've ever wondered how long an eel can still move after it has been killed this movie will show you.

by Anonymousreply 21June 7, 2023 12:45 AM

American Gothic is a thing

by Anonymousreply 22June 7, 2023 12:46 AM

It's hilariously awful. Almost as entertaining as The Happening.

by Anonymousreply 23June 7, 2023 12:47 AM

Glenn must have liked Bronagh Gallagher because she nabbed her for Albert Nobbs.

by Anonymousreply 24June 8, 2023 4:44 AM

R11 Julia by most accounts clashed with both Glenn Close and Meryl Streep but faked it with Streep for that Oscar nomination.

by Anonymousreply 25June 8, 2023 4:53 AM

R25, I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that both instances were Roberts' (and her massive ego's) fault.

by Anonymousreply 26June 8, 2023 4:56 AM

Julia could say she clashed with M because that was the character. Julia's character was equally contemptuous of the G character in Mary Reilly.

by Anonymousreply 27June 8, 2023 4:56 AM

But I would like to know what Julia thought of Malkovich.

by Anonymousreply 28June 8, 2023 5:02 AM

I can’t stand watching John Malkovich. He just seems arrogant and slimy.

The same vibe comes off his Chicago theater scene friend, Gary Sinese. Maybe something was in the water back there.

by Anonymousreply 29June 8, 2023 5:10 AM

Malkovich has a hideous body. They never show him below his chest.

by Anonymousreply 30June 8, 2023 5:35 AM
That mouth is terrifying

Agreed. Why doesn't she have a philtrum?

by Anonymousreply 31June 8, 2023 6:55 AM

Frears knows where the money is. He gives Julia lots of closeups.

by Anonymousreply 32June 8, 2023 1:45 PM

When you've been the most famous person in the world I can only imagine that two old hag actresses mean nothing to you.

by Anonymousreply 33June 9, 2023 4:21 AM

Insufferable cunt

by Anonymousreply 34June 9, 2023 5:19 AM

It took me a while to realize Julia was doing a Brogue accent.

by Anonymousreply 35June 9, 2023 7:19 AM

R35, funny. I thought it was just her homewrecker accent!

by Anonymousreply 36June 9, 2023 7:23 AM

R33 - are the two hags Close and Malkovich?

by Anonymousreply 37June 9, 2023 7:47 AM

I hate her face.

by Anonymousreply 38June 9, 2023 7:56 AM

R8: I didn't realize she wasn't always a bankable star. After 1991 she took a two year hiatus and when she finally returned all her films (Mary Reilly, I Love Trouble, Pret-A-Porter, and Something To Talk About) were all critical and commercial failures.

by Anonymousreply 39June 10, 2023 1:16 AM

R25: Was there a Meryl and Julia catfight on the August Osage County set? I never heard any rumors that they bumped heads.

by Anonymousreply 40June 10, 2023 1:21 AM

Something to Talk About was a box office hit.

by Anonymousreply 41June 10, 2023 1:21 AM

Julia Robert's lips are so fucking ugly. I now they're fake but still - so grotesque. It's like two large, pale and sickly worms lying next to each other on her face.

Totally creepy mouth. Also a really bad actress but that mouth - repulsive.

by Anonymousreply 42June 10, 2023 1:25 AM

*whisper* Mary Reilly. *whisper*

by Anonymousreply 43June 10, 2023 1:25 AM

Hook in 1992 and Pelican Brief in 1993 were big hits.

by Anonymousreply 44June 10, 2023 5:02 AM

R39 the two year break came after Pelican Brief. She only had 94-96 without a 100 million dollar hit.

by Anonymousreply 45June 11, 2023 12:09 AM

Roberts looked very unattractive in this movie, it's her natural look.

by Anonymousreply 46June 11, 2023 12:36 AM

R46 wasn't that the point? To dress down America's Sweetheart. They didn't succeed but notice how all the key art for film posters for her films she has her face dominant on the poster. The studios were selling that image.

by Anonymousreply 47June 11, 2023 12:43 AM

the poster reminds me of the poster for Yentl.

Pretty Woman was a huge hit but Hollywood knew they had a star when Flatliners way over performed and Sleeping With Enemy did crazy business.

by Anonymousreply 53June 11, 2023 1:19 AM
The whispered title was something my friends and I would repeat whenever referencing a movie we hated.

I was hoping someone would mention that. Was that whispering of her full name actually in the movie, or was it just for the trailer & TV spots? I remember that whisper like it was yesterday. Ugh.

Never wanted to see the film.

by Anonymousreply 54June 11, 2023 1:23 AM

Julia Roberts IS Mary Reilly

by Anonymousreply 55June 11, 2023 1:25 AM

The Frauen love Julia Roberts. She's most American women's favorite actress. Yet she's a liberal. But they adore her. My frauen family loves Julia Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 56June 11, 2023 1:29 AM

Is G channeling Hermione Baddeley?

by Anonymousreply 57June 11, 2023 1:35 AM

She is a stuck up bitch. But there is no denying that she is "Miss Movie Star" as Natalie Portman called her.

by Anonymousreply 58June 11, 2023 4:19 AM

Portman's exact words were "like you come around her and she's like Miss Movie Star".

by Anonymousreply 59June 11, 2023 4:23 AM

This thread was more entertaining than the forgettable movie.

by Anonymousreply 60June 11, 2023 4:47 AM

If this movie were made today Mary would become a super heroine kicking My Hyde's ass.

by Anonymousreply 61June 11, 2023 5:29 AM

Mr. Hyde..

by Anonymousreply 62June 11, 2023 5:29 AM

R21 - then it's eel croquettes, eel hash, eel tetrazzini.
