Retailing for $3.5k these 'augmented reality' head sets are going to be the ultimate status symbol. But will we all look like assholes wearing them?
I'd definitely wear it at home alone. Any other time seems weird and hostile. Maybe a plane...
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 5, 2023 8:18 PM |
Available early next year, apparently.
Looks quite polished, but I'll still wait until it's fifth gen before I decide whether to purchase it or not. And it definitely won't be from Apple because I have none of their products and I don't want to be locked into their ecosystem.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 5, 2023 8:21 PM |
Looks like amazing technology but I’ll wait. $3500 isn’t a total deal breaker for me (still though) but my main concern is that a full “ecosystem” develops (apps/games) before I plunk down that kind of money.
What if it flops and you have a $355 headset that only works with a handful of apps? At least the Quest is only $300, so if Meta pulls the plug I wouldn’t get that upset.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 5, 2023 8:27 PM |
This is the future. Everyone in their own little world behind some goggles. It is cool technology though.

I would love it if the tech progressed to what they had in the book (not movie) of Ready Player One.
I won't be buying this any time soon. But, where Apple goes, Samsung, Sony, and Google follow...at substantially lower prices.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 5, 2023 9:39 PM |
WANT.
But I'll wait a generation or two for the technology to mature and the inevitable 50% price decline.
I can slum it with my Oculus until then, and use the extra money to treat myself to food and shelter

Agreed. There were huge jumps in the technology in just three years from the original iPhone (2007) to iPhone 3G and 3GS to iPhone 4 (2010).

by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 5, 2023 10:00 PM |
I can already see some perky fucking gayling creating a DL thread a couple of decades from now, asking how we eldergays possibly survived without these. Google Glass and Facebook's Meta have both failed spectacularly, but I just get that inevitability vibe from this product after watching the video. VR and AI seemed like such distant prospects not that long ago, but they seem to finally have arrived, roughly at the same time.
r5 And the opposite as well, as in "Dakota, mommy's busy being in a better place right now" as she's lying next to a hunk on a virtual beach in Barbados for those glorious twenty minutes a day.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 5, 2023 10:00 PM |
There already was something like this, maybe 15 years ago. It was called "Glass" or something like that. I can't remember if it was an Apple product.

It was Google Glass, R14. 10 years ago

by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 5, 2023 11:03 PM |
Google glass was a very different product.
It was more of cell phone in the form of glasses (including the camera). Most importantly, they looked very much like normal glasses. Anyone could be recording at any time with them and you wouldn't know (which isn't really that different from a cell phone now really).
It was one of the reasons Snapchat made their glasses so ... whatever. They have a light on when they were recording and are so distinctive looking.
[quote]Google Glass and Facebook's Meta have both failed spectacularly
I would not consider the Quest a failure. It doesn't sell like hotcakes, but they are on their 3rd version so clearly Meta is making money. I have one, and there are some things (Beatsaber, 360 degree Youtube videos, a rollercoaster ride, etc.) I really enjoy.
I would imagine with the M2 processor, Apple has taken this to the next level, so VR/AR may have arrived.
I also had never considered the monitor replacement angle. Apple's headset is a 4K display of ANY size that can work with your Mini/Studio. A premium 32 inch 4K display can be almost $3K by itself. And you can have multiple monitors.

I have an Oculus and porn is shocking on it. You are seeing through the eyes of the victim. In virtual reality, I was the passive bottom and you can see this man mount you. If you have ever had this experience you will know what I mean. Sensory overload kicks in and it can go either way, good or bad. As someone who actually uses VR things without a headset (VRChat), I have to say that Apple is going to struggle to market this overly-engineered headset. In a world of $300 Oculus Quests and various other headsets that are much cheaper, the Apple headset offers no real social or major game features that would entice serious VR enthusiasts. It's much more a lifestyle device and in my opinion, this clunky first-gen design should only be for software developers. $3.5k is my budget for an ENTIRE new high-end PC. Not something that I can watch YouTube videos and read DL with, not much else it can do. At least with the gaming PC, I can do a whole lot more with VR and AI "machine learning" capabilities. I'll be around when you can get one for $500.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 6, 2023 11:47 AM |
R42, I’m sure that Apple will struggle a bit, but so far, they’ve always been able to overcome them and deliver a superior product and from what I’ve seen, this product is quite an advance in development beyond other similar products. But i do want to confirm that by trying one out when it’s issued. I am going to wait a few years however, I haven’t seen evidence that the gaming world and other developers have been able to develop many apps for it.
R44 it isn’t just Apple assholes. For those who can easily afford it, it’s going to be a status symbol to have one. The rich will buy them, of that I’m sure.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 6, 2023 2:47 PM |
R47, it will not be a failure. And it won’t be just Apple fan boys who will buy this. It’s what Apple does best—take an idea already being worked on, engineer it for maximum bells and whistles, and sell it for a lot of bucks.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 6, 2023 2:50 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 6, 2023 5:20 PM |
R50, these things are the future… there will be a lot of failures along the way, but this is 100 percent where the industry is going, and someone will hit the market at the right time with the right device and make a ton of money. Maybe it’s Apple, maybe it’s someone else. It’s inevitable.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 6, 2023 5:23 PM |
I saw the rollout video yesterday and I thought the users looked clunky, stupid and navel gazing , even though Apple is trying hard to make them look cool and the users approachable, which, let's face it, they don't. You've got this humungous headset on that looks like a nightmare and special needs, and you are all wrapped up in yourself. Why would your family try to talk to you or you make dinner and chat using it? Plus, I've gotta say I think this is gonna fuck with people's minds. Replay memories like that? What if you get stuck in wanting the VR and not reality, like after a breakup or death of a loved one?

R52, I was talking to a friend of mine and I said I could totally see people having a conversation through those things, while sitting next to each other.
What will happen is what has happened with everyone and their iPhones—except 10 times over. People will be sucked into them, like r52 pointed out. It will become an addiction just like phones—probably more so.
I think I’m buying more Apple stock.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 6, 2023 6:42 PM |
I’m interested in it because I actually like my oculus but hate a few things about it, which Apple seems to have worked out. Namely, I had how you have to create a play area to use the oculus. As best as I can tell, you can move freely with this one. I also hate how you go completely blind to your surroundings with oculus, whereas this one you can see through it if you choose. Still not planning on buying Gen 1, but can see myself buying Gen 2.

R69, the greater fidelity helps in reducing motion sickness, versus the Oculus Quest.
I mostly use the Quest as a modded version of Beat Saber console; The Vision is a much better media consumption device than the Oculus devices.

[quote]After using the headset for about five days, I’m unconvinced that people will get much value from it.
[quote]The device feels less polished than past first-generation Apple products I’ve used. It’s not better for doing work than a computer, and the games I’ve tried so far aren’t fun, which makes it difficult to recommend. An important feature – the ability to place video calls with a humanlike digital avatar that resembles the wearer – terrified children during a family FaceTime call.
Yeah, this needs about a decade or more to mature.

They've stopped development on Vision Pro 2.0 and are instead focusing on a cheaper version.
[quote]Citing both an employee in Apple's headset supply chain and one working in headset manufacturing for Apple, the report claims that the cheaper Vision product – perhaps around the $1,600 mark – is due before the end of 2025. Apple had originally intended to present this headset alongside the Vision Pro, similar to the models available in each iPhone release. The more affordable model would likely have fewer cameras, smaller speakers, and weigh less, though Apple has struggled to bring down the cost of the unit's displays.
[quote]The Vision Pro will launch in China, Japan, Australia, and many European countries later this month. Apple has produced roughly 500,000 Vision Pro headsets and will not make significantly more, despite the entry of these new markets.
As so many in this thread and elsewhere rightfully pointed out, that ridiculous price tag is an adoption killer.

R83 You’re not thinking big. Of course there’s a reason for them to exist, this is we’ve been seeing in futuristic movies for decades.
Honestly, I think this is for developers. It’s a prototype for sale. This is giving creatives an idea to make better technology for it.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 19, 2024 11:31 AM |
No, this was launched as a fully-formed consumer product and it failed in its current form because there are no games and no porn and it's expensive as shit. Creatives and developers only bother with something if there's a critical mass of consumers already owning a certain product.
Glad they saw the light in the end and are working on bringing down the price above all else.
