Apple Vision Pro

Retailing for $3.5k these 'augmented reality' head sets are going to be the ultimate status symbol. But will we all look like assholes wearing them?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85February 21, 2024 2:39 AM

I'd definitely wear it at home alone. Any other time seems weird and hostile. Maybe a plane...

by Anonymousreply 1June 5, 2023 8:18 PM

Available early next year, apparently.

Looks quite polished, but I'll still wait until it's fifth gen before I decide whether to purchase it or not. And it definitely won't be from Apple because I have none of their products and I don't want to be locked into their ecosystem.

by Anonymousreply 2June 5, 2023 8:21 PM

Looks like amazing technology but I’ll wait. $3500 isn’t a total deal breaker for me (still though) but my main concern is that a full “ecosystem” develops (apps/games) before I plunk down that kind of money.

What if it flops and you have a $355 headset that only works with a handful of apps? At least the Quest is only $300, so if Meta pulls the plug I wouldn’t get that upset.

by Anonymousreply 3June 5, 2023 8:27 PM

This is the future. Everyone in their own little world behind some goggles. It is cool technology though.

by Anonymousreply 4June 5, 2023 8:34 PM

Just as the iPad has become the parents tool to shut their kids up, this will be the next thing. Dakota if you don't eat your din dins then I'm taking your Vision Pro off you.

by Anonymousreply 5June 5, 2023 8:50 PM

This is unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 6June 5, 2023 9:20 PM

I don't even have the Apple watch and I don't plan to get it. No, I am not interested in getting this Vision Pro.

I do have an old iPhone, an old iPad, and an old iMac, though.

by Anonymousreply 7June 5, 2023 9:36 PM

I would love it if the tech progressed to what they had in the book (not movie) of Ready Player One.

I won't be buying this any time soon. But, where Apple goes, Samsung, Sony, and Google follow...at substantially lower prices.

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2023 9:39 PM

WANT.

But I'll wait a generation or two for the technology to mature and the inevitable 50% price decline.

I can slum it with my Oculus until then, and use the extra money to treat myself to food and shelter

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2023 9:46 PM
But I'll wait a generation or two for the technology to mature and the inevitable 50% price decline.

Agreed. There were huge jumps in the technology in just three years from the original iPhone (2007) to iPhone 3G and 3GS to iPhone 4 (2010).

by Anonymousreply 10June 5, 2023 9:50 PM

No, you'll look totally cool like this guy 🙄

Oh honey, absolutely [italic]no.[/italic]

What is wrong with you? You must not be an actual gay man.

by Anonymousreply 12June 5, 2023 10:00 PM

I can already see some perky fucking gayling creating a DL thread a couple of decades from now, asking how we eldergays possibly survived without these. Google Glass and Facebook's Meta have both failed spectacularly, but I just get that inevitability vibe from this product after watching the video. VR and AI seemed like such distant prospects not that long ago, but they seem to finally have arrived, roughly at the same time.

r5 And the opposite as well, as in "Dakota, mommy's busy being in a better place right now" as she's lying next to a hunk on a virtual beach in Barbados for those glorious twenty minutes a day.

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2023 10:00 PM

There already was something like this, maybe 15 years ago. It was called "Glass" or something like that. I can't remember if it was an Apple product.

by Anonymousreply 14June 5, 2023 10:01 PM

It was Google Glass, R14. 10 years ago

by Anonymousreply 15June 5, 2023 10:12 PM

Thanks, R15.

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2023 11:03 PM

Google glass was a very different product.

It was more of cell phone in the form of glasses (including the camera). Most importantly, they looked very much like normal glasses. Anyone could be recording at any time with them and you wouldn't know (which isn't really that different from a cell phone now really).

It was one of the reasons Snapchat made their glasses so ... whatever. They have a light on when they were recording and are so distinctive looking.
Google Glass and Facebook's Meta have both failed spectacularly

I would not consider the Quest a failure. It doesn't sell like hotcakes, but they are on their 3rd version so clearly Meta is making money. I have one, and there are some things (Beatsaber, 360 degree Youtube videos, a rollercoaster ride, etc.) I really enjoy.

I would imagine with the M2 processor, Apple has taken this to the next level, so VR/AR may have arrived.

I also had never considered the monitor replacement angle. Apple's headset is a 4K display of ANY size that can work with your Mini/Studio. A premium 32 inch 4K display can be almost $3K by itself. And you can have multiple monitors.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2023 11:30 PM

I could only see myself watching movies or streaming services with them.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2023 11:41 PM

I actually can’t wait to try them out.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2023 11:42 PM

I have watched VR Sex videos with my Oculus and it is amazing. I feel just like I am laying down while the gorgeous man is mounting me. Takes my breath away.

by Anonymousreply 20June 5, 2023 11:53 PM

I'm genuinely concerned R20 is NOT trolling.

by Anonymousreply 32June 6, 2023 12:45 AM

I’m getting excited.

by Anonymousreply 33June 6, 2023 12:50 AM

As Scott Galloway likes to say, no one puts anything on their face that makes them less attractive to mates.

As we saw with Google Glass, these things just identify people as nerds.

by Anonymousreply 34June 6, 2023 12:51 AM

Its about damn time. I've been waiting all my life for this stuff, and I'm not getting any younger...

by Anonymousreply 35June 6, 2023 12:51 AM

I have an Oculus and porn is shocking on it. You are seeing through the eyes of the victim. In virtual reality, I was the passive bottom and you can see this man mount you. If you have ever had this experience you will know what I mean. Sensory overload kicks in and it can go either way, good or bad. It really is intense and I had to rip the thing off my head and take some breaths. It was scary.

That's never bothered an Apple user before.

by Anonymousreply 41June 6, 2023 4:35 AM

As someone who actually uses VR things without a headset (VRChat), I have to say that Apple is going to struggle to market this overly-engineered headset. In a world of $300 Oculus Quests and various other headsets that are much cheaper, the Apple headset offers no real social or major game features that would entice serious VR enthusiasts. It's much more a lifestyle device and in my opinion, this clunky first-gen design should only be for software developers. $3.5k is my budget for an ENTIRE new high-end PC. Not something that I can watch YouTube videos and read DL with, not much else it can do. At least with the gaming PC, I can do a whole lot more with VR and AI "machine learning" capabilities. I'll be around when you can get one for $500.

by Anonymousreply 42June 6, 2023 9:40 AM

R36 is the definition of MARY!

by Anonymousreply 43June 6, 2023 11:19 AM

Apple assholes will just have to have one.

by Anonymousreply 44June 6, 2023 11:47 AM

R42, I’m sure that Apple will struggle a bit, but so far, they’ve always been able to overcome them and deliver a superior product and from what I’ve seen, this product is quite an advance in development beyond other similar products. But i do want to confirm that by trying one out when it’s issued. I am going to wait a few years however, I haven’t seen evidence that the gaming world and other developers have been able to develop many apps for it.

R44 it isn’t just Apple assholes. For those who can easily afford it, it’s going to be a status symbol to have one. The rich will buy them, of that I’m sure.

by Anonymousreply 45June 6, 2023 12:31 PM

You just recruited a1,000 Dataloungers to Oculus, [R36].

by Anonymousreply 46June 6, 2023 12:55 PM

Not impressed. Looks like a failure in the making.

Apple fanboys will rush out to buy one. But normal people will look at the price tag and pass.

by Anonymousreply 47June 6, 2023 2:47 PM

R47, it will not be a failure. And it won’t be just Apple fan boys who will buy this. It’s what Apple does best—take an idea already being worked on, engineer it for maximum bells and whistles, and sell it for a lot of bucks.

by Anonymousreply 48June 6, 2023 2:50 PM

Everyone yammering on about VR porn reminds me of Demolition Man, which is something I’d have never anticipated. Wasn’t there a scene where Sandy’s character said people only got off using VR?

by Anonymousreply 49June 6, 2023 2:56 PM

Oculus is a failure at a fraction of the price.

by Anonymousreply 50June 6, 2023 5:20 PM

R50, these things are the future… there will be a lot of failures along the way, but this is 100 percent where the industry is going, and someone will hit the market at the right time with the right device and make a ton of money. Maybe it’s Apple, maybe it’s someone else. It’s inevitable.

by Anonymousreply 51June 6, 2023 5:23 PM

I saw the rollout video yesterday and I thought the users looked clunky, stupid and navel gazing , even though Apple is trying hard to make them look cool and the users approachable, which, let's face it, they don't. You've got this humungous headset on that looks like a nightmare and special needs, and you are all wrapped up in yourself. Why would your family try to talk to you or you make dinner and chat using it? Plus, I've gotta say I think this is gonna fuck with people's minds. Replay memories like that? What if you get stuck in wanting the VR and not reality, like after a breakup or death of a loved one?

by Anonymousreply 52June 6, 2023 5:27 PM
Here is a sample of Gay VR Porn. You won't be able to see the 3D experience, but you can see what happens.

I don't have a VR headset. Can you tell me what happens in this film and how it ends?

by Anonymousreply 54June 6, 2023 6:35 PM

R52, I was talking to a friend of mine and I said I could totally see people having a conversation through those things, while sitting next to each other.

What will happen is what has happened with everyone and their iPhones—except 10 times over. People will be sucked into them, like r52 pointed out. It will become an addiction just like phones—probably more so.

I think I’m buying more Apple stock.

by Anonymousreply 55June 6, 2023 6:42 PM

I’m interested in it because I actually like my oculus but hate a few things about it, which Apple seems to have worked out. Namely, I had how you have to create a play area to use the oculus. As best as I can tell, you can move freely with this one. I also hate how you go completely blind to your surroundings with oculus, whereas this one you can see through it if you choose. Still not planning on buying Gen 1, but can see myself buying Gen 2.

by Anonymousreply 68February 8, 2024 4:18 PM

r52, it's basically a Black Mirror episode called, "The Entire History of You".

R69, the increased fidelity staves off nausea, personally compared to my Oculus Quest, which I only use as a modded beat saber game console.

R69, the greater fidelity helps in reducing motion sickness, versus the Oculus Quest.

I mostly use the Quest as a modded version of Beat Saber console; The Vision is a much better media consumption device than the Oculus devices.

by Anonymousreply 70February 8, 2024 4:39 PM

NYTimes gave it a pretty negative review.

by Anonymousreply 71February 8, 2024 4:40 PM

R69 Toby Kebbell was so hot in that episode.

by Anonymousreply 72February 8, 2024 4:50 PM

So hot. I was certain he'd blow up big after that episode, just thanks to his hotness alone.

by Anonymousreply 73February 8, 2024 4:53 PM
After using the headset for about five days, I’m unconvinced that people will get much value from it.
The device feels less polished than past first-generation Apple products I’ve used. It’s not better for doing work than a computer, and the games I’ve tried so far aren’t fun, which makes it difficult to recommend. An important feature – the ability to place video calls with a humanlike digital avatar that resembles the wearer – terrified children during a family FaceTime call.

Yeah, this needs about a decade or more to mature.
I felt nauseated just reading the review. Especially the part in which the reviewer himself pays $3,500 for the device and then close to $500 for extraneous stuff such as a $200 carrying case. All that money so he can feel nauseated while tripping over furniture, frightening small children and looking like an insect. Impressive product. Those who buy it no doubt deserve it.

Funny comment under NYT's review.
Those who buy it no doubt deserve it.

Thank you for that quote. I have been thinking of returning it because it's a vulgar amount of money to spend, but I do deserve it.

I also would deserve to get laughed at and mugged if I ever wore it in public.

by Anonymousreply 76February 8, 2024 5:15 PM

R68. I haven't tried out porn, yet; I'm scared of making my avatar go all Toobin during a conference call.

I did try porn on my Oculus Quest a while back, I didn't enjoy it enough to want to do that on the regular.

it felt like a bad 3D movie from the 80s, "Comin' at Ya" 3D era.
