Jacinda Ardern becomes a dame as New Zealand honours former PM
[quote]New Zealand has awarded Jacinda Ardern one of the country’s highest honours, making the former prime minister a dame for her service to the country during the Covid-19 pandemic and Christchurch terror attacks.
[quote]The country announced its king’s birthday honours on Monday, a public holiday to recognise King Charles III. Also recognised was Queen Camilla, who was awarded a New Zealand order of merit for her support of the monarch. It is traditional in New Zealand to recognise the monarch’s spouse for their service.

Does anyone know why she resigned? I always liked her and thought she was a terrific PM.
All of a sudden she quit - no explanation - it was weird.

All former Nz PM get a knighthood / damehood when they leave office. So it’s nothing unusual.
She left because she was sick of the bullshit and threats from the crazy right wingers wanting to kidnap her daughter etc etc. plus after three major events (c19, mosque shooting and volcano eruption) you can’t blame her. The month after she left we had another major event- flooding. So she left at right time. I can’t imagine how stressed she would have been if she had stayed on and then had to deal with the floods. Public opinion was turning too - voters have short term memories. Suddenly her Covid measures were seen as draconian when in the months prior she was praised for them. She deserved a break.

r1 Her party was looking at a wipeout in the upcoming elections coming up in October. They've now done some rebranding and have rebounded substantially in the polls. So she did it for the good of the party, basically.

Is Kiwi damehood worth much, or is it an American dollar / Canadian dollar kind of thing? Do the royal snobs back in the UK find it laughable?

They got 50% in the last election, babe. So yes, 34% is disastrous in that context, it's laughable to speak of parliamentary systems in general when discussing a particular country's politics as they all have different party dynamics. They were clearly on the wrong path, demonstrated by the fact that they have retooled and refocused since she resigned, and have reaped the benefits of that in subsequent polling.

The same party won the election again and stayed in power, right?
Good for the party, good for Ardern and good for NZ. Keep those lunatic right wing fuckers out of the PM's office.
