Ehhh...I have never heard that before. In my lived experience, that acronym most definitely meant "Protestant" as opposed to Catholic (or some other faith). It is not a synonym for "white" or "rich white," it refers specifically to protestants of a certain class standing -- and persons belonging to that group would not consider it an ethnic group because they are the ruling class and the rest of us are the "ethnics."
