The Gays and Tennis Part 149 -- Le Final de la Terre Batue

On to la deuxieme semaine, bishes! Vite, vite!

Will Cinderello take down Legz and win it all in a true fairy-tale ending?

Will Novaxx show his boobs again? Will he ever earn the love of the fickle Frenchies?

With Peppa out of singles, WHO will carry the standard for women's fashion-forward kits?

Will Tennis Channel have a collective orgasm if Coco makes the final again?

Will (not so) Young Grigor take down sneering Sascha and -- perhaps propose to Amelie Mauresmo?

Will Taylor Townhouse and Leyla continue their Jack Sprat and wife romp through the dubs draw?

All this and MORE, in la deuxieme semaine! Amusez-vous, mes amours!

A French Open doubles match ended controversially on Sunday as No.16 seeds Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified from the tournament after a ball girl was hit by a ball.

Having lost the opening set to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, Japan’s Kato and Sutjiadi of Indonesia were leading 3-1 in the second set of their third round match when the incident happened.

Eurosport coverage showed Kato innocuously hitting the ball to the back of the court after a point, and though it didn’t appear as if she intentionally meant to hit the ball girl, the ball hit her head. Standing at the back of the court, the tearful ball girl was visibly shaken.

Chair umpire Alexandre Juge issued a code violation before grand slam supervisor Wayne McKewen and tournament referee Remy Azemar appeared on Court 14. After discussions between the officials and the players, it was announced Kato and Sutjiadi had been defaulted.

The Roland Garros crowd greeted the news with jeers and boos, while Sutjiadi comforted Kato.

Tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg tweeted: “Brutal call. Ball not hit in anger whatsoever, just hit across to ball girl to keep the match flowing because it was the other team’s turn to serve. Ball girl had hands full, reacted late.”

It isn’t the first time a player has been defaulted at a grand slam. One of the most high-profile incidents happened in 2020 when Novak Djokovic’s US Open ended early after he was defaulted for unintentionally hitting a line judge.

According to the grand slam rule book, players “shall not violently, dangerously or with anger hit, kick or throw a tennis ball within the precincts of the tournament site except in the reasonable pursuit of a point during a match (including warm-up)”

The rule book states: “In all cases of default, the decision of the referee in consultation with the grand slam chief of supervisors shall be final and unappealable.”

A player who is defaulted loses all ranking points earned at the tournament, the rule book states, and all prize money earned at the tournament.

by Anonymousreply 9June 4, 2023 10:48 PM

R4 The opposing team who pushed for a default over a warning are getting dragged for exploiting a technicality, and for smiling and laughing while this unfolded. I feel bad for the player Miyu Kato and also for the ball girl.

I can’t tell if the ball girl got hit on the shoulder, head or chest. It looks like her hands were full and Kato’s ball struck her shoulder or biceps.

It’s an interesting, ambiguous situation.

by Anonymousreply 21June 5, 2023 1:52 PM

OP is a fan of Rune and Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 22June 5, 2023 2:21 PM

^ yes of Rune

The reason I want Sascha is b/c I have no faith that Grigor will not collapse in the next round if he manages to beat Sascha. I think Sascha is more of a fighter and will produce a good match v. Casper.

by Anonymousreply 23June 5, 2023 2:38 PM

So you're presuming that Ruud will get past Rune or Cerundolo into the semis and that he'll meet Zverev there if Zverev gets past Dimitrov and the winner of Etcheverry/Nishioka?

by Anonymousreply 24June 5, 2023 3:30 PM

Rune doesn’t admit to a double bounce so Cerundulo losing the point.

Terrible sportsmanship.

by Anonymousreply 25June 5, 2023 3:41 PM

The Brat bringing his usual circus to town. Up and down like a yo-yo - medical time out due to 'dizziness 'in the 4th... which he's just lost 1-6.

Please, Sweet Baby Jesus & The Orphans - let Cerundolo win this!

by Anonymousreply 26June 5, 2023 4:25 PM

Morataglou looks slimier than ever.

by Anonymousreply 27June 5, 2023 4:36 PM

Cerundolo's getting the yips badly. AAAARGH!

by Anonymousreply 28June 5, 2023 4:58 PM

Cerundolo breaks back. I CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE OF THIS!

by Anonymousreply 29June 5, 2023 5:06 PM

Cerundolo Rune reminds of the US Open 2020 final: both players just don't want to win it.

by Anonymousreply 30June 5, 2023 5:11 PM

MATCH TIE-BREAK. FFS!

by Anonymousreply 31June 5, 2023 5:13 PM

Wow! That was an amazing match. Sorry Cerundulo is out, though.

by Anonymousreply 32June 5, 2023 5:26 PM

Wow, Rune is sooo gay.

by Anonymousreply 33June 5, 2023 5:27 PM

Is Chandra Rubin on Ozempic too? Sudden weight loss. She looks good though

by Anonymousreply 34June 5, 2023 5:35 PM

Why do you say that, R33?

by Anonymousreply 35June 5, 2023 5:39 PM

On the evidence of that match, I really don't see Rune winning RG this year.

If he's up against a Djokovic or an Alcaraz, I just don't see them letting him back into a match in the way he was able to against Cerundolo, here, and VDS in Munich.

I don't think he can sustain the level he would need to be at if the match goes over 3 sets.

by Anonymousreply 36June 5, 2023 5:45 PM

Perhaps Iga should allow Tsurenko to win since she is such a hard backer of Ukranaian Girls in The Wta

by Anonymousreply 37June 5, 2023 6:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 38June 5, 2023 6:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 42June 5, 2023 7:08 PM

Grigor, whom I love, is a lousy big-match player. Zverev, whom I don't care for, is a good big-match player.

by Anonymousreply 43June 5, 2023 7:11 PM

Fucking Grigor.

Virtually unplayable against Lovely Altmaier, then goes and plays like a drain against Satan Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 44June 5, 2023 7:16 PM

[quote] Zverev, whom I don't care for, is a good big-match player.

Agreed.

by Anonymousreply 45June 5, 2023 7:18 PM

Zverev is one of the worst big game players ever - given his talent. He should have three or four slam by now. He's got every shot save a second serve (that comes and goes).

Young Grigor, despite the "baby Fed" tag - doesn't have anywhere near Zverev's ceiling.

Because all I really want is for Novak not to win? I want Rune to come through the bottom half. His game gives Novak fits.

by Anonymousreply 46June 5, 2023 7:32 PM

Dimitrov's not close to toast yet. I'd love to see him, Etcheverry , Ruud or Alvarez take it all.

by Anonymousreply 81June 6, 2023 3:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 82June 6, 2023 4:14 PM

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina accused Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka of adding fuel to the fire by standing at the net waiting for a handshake she knew would never happen at the end of their French Open quarter-final on Tuesday.

Svitolina had warned she would not shake hands with players from Russia or Belarus

"I don’t know, to be fair, what she was waiting for, because my statements were clear enough about the handshake," Svitolina, who was booed by the crowd as she walked straight to her bench after losing the match 6-4 6-4, told a press conference.

by Anonymousreply 83June 6, 2023 4:18 PM

Novaxx through in 4.

I want to see how he handles Carlitos. Or how Carlitos handles him.

No, I don't think Titsy has much of a chance.

by Anonymousreply 84June 6, 2023 4:54 PM

I'm not ruling out Zverev to make into the Final.

by Anonymousreply 85June 6, 2023 4:56 PM

I cannot believe that Mrs. La Monf got booed by the public. La Monf is Royalty in Roland Garros and on any tennis court out there in France. I guess the kids didn't know that booing Svitolina was a crime of Roland Garros lèse-majesté?

by Anonymousreply 86June 6, 2023 4:59 PM

I can't think of any final that would be more putrid or pinguid than Djokovic-Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 87June 6, 2023 5:08 PM

Damn. I really don't want Djokovic in the finals. His opponents always act like they can beat him (or Djok makes it seem like they can) and then they fucking fall apart.

by Anonymousreply 88June 6, 2023 5:11 PM

The Ukrainian players need to stop demonizing Russian no Belarusian players.

The only bomb they’re sending their way are serves.

This is putin’s war.

by Anonymousreply 89June 6, 2023 5:16 PM

R86, for them to book Svitolina at Roland Garros, this tells us that the tennis watching public has had it with the antics of these ukranaian players

by Anonymousreply 90June 6, 2023 5:30 PM

Alcaraz taking Citybus to the breaker's yard.

by Anonymousreply 100June 6, 2023 7:50 PM

Hope NoVaxxx is shitting his pants tonight.

Dis gon' be ugly AF!

by Anonymousreply 108June 6, 2023 8:14 PM

A story that made me like Carlos even better than I already did.

One of the Tennis Podcast hosts was wandering around Indian Wells following the end of this year’s tourney. Carlos was exiting the building and heading for his car. Carlos was waving and calling our “bye!” to everyone in sight.

Such a sweet, innocent moment. Between his family and coaches, they’re doing a lot right with this guy.

by Anonymousreply 109June 6, 2023 8:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 110June 6, 2023 8:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 111June 6, 2023 8:33 PM

Carlitos has also gone off the boil.

by Anonymousreply 112June 6, 2023 8:36 PM

Weird hiccup, but he came through.

by Anonymousreply 113June 6, 2023 8:43 PM

I thought they were going to make out at the net

by Anonymousreply 114June 6, 2023 8:44 PM

If Carlitos plays like in the first two sets, bye bye Djokovic. If however he plays like the second half of the third set, we may have a match. C'est trop de suspense !

by Anonymousreply 115June 6, 2023 8:47 PM

The last set turned out to be fun. Good crowd.

by Anonymousreply 116June 6, 2023 8:54 PM

Carlos cannot be stopped, I think. Novak will go for #23 at Wimbledon. And Carlos the fave in NYC. So they each win 2 this year, I think... Novak gets to 24; Carlos gets to 3!

by Anonymousreply 117June 6, 2023 9:23 PM

I think Sabalenka truly is mentally deficient. “I am just a tennis player. I am just a twenty-five-year-old tennis player. If I’d wanted to be a politician I wouldn’t be here playing tennis.” I’d really like to see how she’d react if she had to wake up every morning wondering if her family and friends had survived another night.

The smirk she gave her team when, lolling at the net knowing there was never going to be a handshake, Svitolina got booed says volumes about her callous stupidity.

Why is that bad representation? Doesn't pretty much everyone think that DQ was an overreaction?

by Anonymousreply 122June 6, 2023 10:56 PM

It turns out that Sabalenka has been a close friend of the Lukashenko family for years. And now suddenly she says she doesn't support him? Please, how convenient for her! Look how chummy they are on pictures. I'm sorry but that's about as believable as if Sidney Powell suddenly said "I don't support Trump, never have, never will".

by Anonymousreply 123June 6, 2023 11:10 PM

R122, yes, many people in the tennis world have criticized the DQ, particularly since it was the other team pressed the referee for the decision.

R228, leave Sab alone. Shendidnt start the war. Let the girl be. This is Putins fucking war, go at him.

I hope Sab wins all the Slams this year and kicks Iga in the cunt bone at the Finals , just as she did last year

by Anonymousreply 125June 7, 2023 1:07 AM

I love the smirk Sab gave her team. Atta Girl! The Ukranian girls are annoying AF.

by Anonymousreply 126June 7, 2023 1:08 AM

I love Sab. She's has a sweet, self-effacing personality with a big game and a fantastic sense of humor.

What the hell is she supposed to do? Burn herself at the stake because Putin is a psychopathic killer? If anything, he's all the reason NOT to say anything against the war! Lord knows he wouldn't think twice to have her family murdered. And yet she still has spoken out against the war.

So she forgot for one second and went to the net to shake hands. Gee, what a villain.

I am 100% for Ukraine, but I think it's a little ridiculous what's happening to Russian and Belarus players.

by Anonymousreply 127June 7, 2023 1:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 146June 7, 2023 11:10 AM

Good for Beatriz. It’s been a long time for women players from Brazil…not much since the late, great, under appreciated Maria Bueno. Maria was Evonne Goolagong before Goolagong. Grace in action.

…bore No Significant Fault or Negligence for her violation", it said in its decision, but she still faces ban. That is because she blamed contaminated supplements for failing the test - an explanation that was accepted - but athletes are deemed to be accepting the risk of contamination when they take supplements…

by Anonymousreply 156June 7, 2023 11:43 AM

Team Etch. I've followed him for over a year and am happy for his recent success. I think Zverev has the better chance to beat Djok if that were to occur, though.

Team Ruud. I've often defended Legz Rune against his detractors, but I've also said he's currently a brat, and Ruud...is such a gentleman and a dreamboat. Absolute dreamboat.

I hope Carlos kicks the shit out of Djokovic...but I fear he'll lose his nerve and/or Djoko rekindles his own.

I'm not vested much in the women's draw this year, but would love Townsend to win the doubles and the defaulted player to win the mixed.

by Anonymousreply 161June 7, 2023 2:26 PM

R160 is going straight to Hell.

by Anonymousreply 162June 7, 2023 2:38 PM

Gauff had Iga thinking about it for a moment - when she got to 4-4 in the first set, and then when she (Gauff) had three break points to go up 2-1 early in the second. But, each time Iga responded well. Gauff played better than the final last year, but is so clearly a level below Iga.

Rune is playing terribly thus far. Reminds me of yesterday evening’s match except Ruud isn’t so special.

by Anonymousreply 168June 7, 2023 6:59 PM

Look at the bags under the brat's eyes. I think he might have that bug that knocked out Rybakina et al.

R165, Etcheverry put up a good fight—unlike, say, Rune right now.

by Anonymousreply 171June 7, 2023 7:03 PM

And Rune just got broken in the first game of the 2nd set.

by Anonymousreply 172June 7, 2023 7:07 PM

Does Legz have the legs to ward off Casper's ability to stay in the point. It would be so rude of Ruud to ruin Rune's run.

by Anonymousreply 173June 7, 2023 7:08 PM

I'm sure Rune will fight back, but can we just have a bit of respect for Ruud.

He's probably never going to be one of the greats but he's showing what a no fuss, professional, focussed player can achieve.

by Anonymousreply 174June 7, 2023 7:10 PM

You're welcome.

by Anonymousreply 175June 7, 2023 7:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 178June 7, 2023 7:44 PM

I can't stand The Brat, but the crowd aren't cheering him for that, FFS.

They're just getting behind the player behind. RG crowds always do this (if a French player isn't involved).

by Anonymousreply 179June 7, 2023 7:48 PM

One of the (very few) Rune fans on this board will chastise you for even using the H word, R178.

by Anonymousreply 180June 7, 2023 7:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 185June 7, 2023 8:22 PM

Fucking dumb Brat fans holding up a sign 'celebrating' his double bounce shot from his win over Cerundolo. Trash.

by Anonymousreply 186June 7, 2023 8:31 PM

R185, I thought it was Courier making the joke, but maybe it was the opposite.

Courier: "Maybe he (Rune) just needed that Mountain Dew you were talking about."

Goodall: Laughs like it's an in joke.

by Anonymousreply 187June 7, 2023 8:46 PM

I was a little surprised that they seem determined to pin doping charges on Halep. It feels like maybe a message to Mouratoglou. Potentially there could be a big scandal there since he works with so many players and the tennis authorities do not want that.

Rune showed his immaturity during that match. He's too streaky at the moment. He can beat someone like Cerundolo, who doesn't yet have the confidence to hold their nerve, but he'll go down to a player as consistent and cool-headed as Ruud.

by Anonymousreply 240June 8, 2023 4:25 PM

This trophy will go to HM or Iga

Muchova is injured

Sablenka should be embarassed, couldn't close it when in the lead, over a n injured player to boot.

Shenled 5-2 !!!

by Anonymousreply 241June 8, 2023 4:26 PM

Choke!!!

by Anonymousreply 242June 8, 2023 4:26 PM

Wow, Sabalenka goes down. I was hoping she and Novak would win--would be fun to have both a man and a woman going for the calendar Slam at the same time! (Like in '88 with Graf and Wilander. Not that anyone thought Wilander would win Wimbledon.)

by Anonymousreply 243June 8, 2023 4:29 PM

I though Muchova just had leg cramp - but it's an injury?

But anyway, of all my favorite players, only Swiatek is left, so yay, I guess.

I did like Sabalenka in the little one on one interview with Rublev but she won the Aussie Open so - share the wealth!

by Anonymousreply 244June 8, 2023 4:33 PM

Damn you Muchova. The only thing which will make this all better is for Beatriz HM to win over Iga 6- 0, 6- 0

by Anonymousreply 245June 8, 2023 4:37 PM

Sabalenka handed last 3 sets to Muchova. Too many errors. Muchova really didn't have to do much

Sabalenka's banshee grunting is 100% gamesmanship. No way is it natural. I wish WTA would actually apply the rules they do have about it.

by Anonymousreply 270June 9, 2023 8:21 AM

Can you really call the noise Sabalenka generates a “grunt” r270? She seems to roar before, during and after striking the ball. I well recall many years ago during a match at Wimbledon, Navratilova complaining she could not hear the ball onto the racquet owing to the noise being made by her opponent Seles.

That noise seems small beer in comparison to Sabalenka who I agree is simply using gamesmanship to intimidate and throw off her opponents. I think we’ll wait for a long time before the WTA do anything not least for them to rule what amount of noise is actually permissible and what is cheating.

God I miss Chrissie.

by Anonymousreply 271June 9, 2023 8:57 AM

R271, I couldn’t agree more. The noise Sabalenka makes is so totally off-putting that I actually admire whoever’s on the other side of the net for not telling her to knock it off or complaining officially about hindrance during play. I don’t know whether it’s just coincidence, but I was watching the Sabelnka–Swiatek match on Eurosport yesterday with the English commentary on, and the audio feed from the court seemed to have been turned way down. I actually suspected they’d done it on purpose to silence the caterwauling just a bit.

Oh, and Chrissie was commentating on the match for Eurosport EN yesterday, so that was a real treat. She gets quite a bit of stick here, but her commentating is actually quite good and insightful. She’s been there, and she knows what it feels like.

by Anonymousreply 286June 9, 2023 2:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 287June 9, 2023 2:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 289June 9, 2023 2:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 300June 9, 2023 3:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 305June 9, 2023 3:36 PM

Leg cramps can be so painful that they temporarily paralyze you. I've been getting them at night and I wake up in agony.

by Anonymousreply 306June 9, 2023 3:36 PM

bothered me that Novak came across to Carlitos court; performative sympathy....

by Anonymousreply 307June 9, 2023 3:39 PM

Carlos pounded by JCF to hard last night.

by Anonymousreply 308June 9, 2023 3:42 PM

R307, Carlos should do like Medvedev did when he cramped up and yelled at an opponent " get away from me, you're not a doctor, don't touch me"

by Anonymousreply 309June 9, 2023 3:46 PM

The trainers of Carlos need to make sure that he drinks plenty of fluids particularly on a very hot day. Novak is experienced and knows what to do to avoid these issues.

by Anonymousreply 310June 9, 2023 3:47 PM

Novak was trying to get in to Carlitos head when he came across the net... basically a non-verbal "oh gosh Carlitos, this is really really serious!"

by Anonymousreply 311June 9, 2023 3:48 PM

" Novak is experienced and knows what to do to avoid these issues."

Novak has more defaults than any of the other Big 3. He understands how to avoid the issues, but doesn't always.

by Anonymousreply 312June 9, 2023 3:50 PM

I’m not a Novak fan but to my eyes he’s exhibiting sportsmanship today. Am I naive or are some of you cynical? Or both?

by Anonymousreply 313June 9, 2023 3:51 PM

R275 how shocked are you right now? This sucks

by Anonymousreply 314June 9, 2023 3:51 PM

R313 , you're kidding right?

by Anonymousreply 315June 9, 2023 3:52 PM

Novak is wearing Carlos out

by Anonymousreply 316June 9, 2023 3:53 PM

Twenty year olds think that they can do anything. I remember those days.

by Anonymousreply 317June 9, 2023 3:56 PM

I like Carlos, but he's pretty dense. His team is screaming at him to drink fluids? I guess these prodigies with a corporation of people doing everything for them (including thinking for them at times since coaching is allowed now), can lack self sufficiency.

by Anonymousreply 318June 9, 2023 3:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 321June 9, 2023 4:08 PM

WHEN OBNOXIOUS NOVAXX CAME CRAWLING TO ME WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES, SAYING HE COULDN'T WIN A SINGLE MATCH ON DIRT AND SIR I NEED A 23RD GRAND SLAM TITLE, PLEASE HELP ME FOR YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE, I FELT VERY SORRY FOR THAT DOG. I KNOW HE WAS STRONGLY HATED BY MOST OF HIS FELLOW TENNIS PLAYERS, BUT I HAD JUST FIRED OLD MAN FEDERER, SO I DECIDED TO GIVE OBNOXIOUS NOVAXX THE FRENCH OPEN. HOW DID HE THANK ME? NOT A SINGLE MENTION THAT THE ELECTION WAS STOLLEN FROM ME BY RINOS AND RATS WHO TURNED AND THROUGH ME UNDER THE BUS WITH THE RAD ICAL COMMUNISTS OF THE J6 COMMITTEE. I WILL BE OBNOXIOUOS NOVAXX RETRIBUTION FOR WHAT'S LEFT OF HIS CAREER AND HIS LIFE.

by Anonymousreply 322June 9, 2023 4:09 PM

I remember when NoVaxx had charm and humility and an even temperament.

by Anonymousreply 323June 9, 2023 4:11 PM

Yeah, the fist-pumping and the roars in this situation are totally inappropriate. I'll give Novak sportsmanship for when the cramping happened but he's reverting back to type.

by Anonymousreply 324June 9, 2023 4:18 PM

I think Zverev will be playing in the final and has a chance to beat Djokovic.

by Anonymousreply 325June 9, 2023 4:19 PM

That's like a bar menu with only hemlock and nightshade as the choices.

by Anonymousreply 326June 9, 2023 4:22 PM

Let's not underestimate Casper again. Few people were giving him a chance against Rune.

by Anonymousreply 327June 9, 2023 4:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 328June 9, 2023 4:26 PM

Well, that sucked donkey balls.

by Anonymousreply 329June 9, 2023 4:29 PM

Carlos was playing one leg yet Novak was fist pumping every point won

by Anonymousreply 330June 9, 2023 4:31 PM

VIVA Novak!! Beating the cocky Spanish twink. Carlos is a DOPER. I am totally convinced of that now.

by Anonymousreply 331June 9, 2023 4:32 PM

Zveverev all the way!!

by Anonymousreply 332June 9, 2023 4:34 PM

I can buy Carlos as a doper, but Novak isn't a doper?

by Anonymousreply 333June 9, 2023 4:37 PM

Novak showed great sportsmanship in the match and also some tenacity--sometimes when your opponent is injured it can screw with your head. He kept it reined in and deserved the win.

by Anonymousreply 338June 9, 2023 5:19 PM

Hanging my hopes on Casper to save us from Satan vs. Beelzebub.

by Anonymousreply 339June 9, 2023 5:32 PM

Eh. Novak is now the GOAT. He's won all three slams three times. Won all Masters twice. And has weeks at number one locked too.

Oh, and 23 slams. Because we all know he's destroying Ruud (haha) or Zverev.

Fuck. Rafa is two. Fed is three.

Damn, damn, DAMN.

by Anonymousreply 340June 9, 2023 5:53 PM

all FOUR slams...

by Anonymousreply 341June 9, 2023 5:53 PM

I'm not writing Ruud out. Rafa should call Ruud up and tell him to make sure that he beats Djokovic. Ruud is so submissive that he'll do what Rafa wants.

by Anonymousreply 346June 9, 2023 6:51 PM

Yes, R345.

by Anonymousreply 347June 9, 2023 7:18 PM

Didn't expect this outcome. None of the people I expected to win won in both men's and women's draws

by Anonymousreply 348June 9, 2023 7:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 351June 9, 2023 9:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 352June 9, 2023 9:27 PM

Muchova over Iga

by Anonymousreply 353June 9, 2023 9:28 PM

Mucky has a nice all-court game with variety (seems like the Czechs get taught everything properly) but I still want Svee to win.

by Anonymousreply 354June 9, 2023 9:31 PM

Hopefully Muchova, but Swiatek really is outstanding, as much as I hate to say it because I can't stand her.

What causes cramping like that? I'd be reading up tons on it and how to prevent it if possible.

by Anonymousreply 364June 10, 2023 8:24 AM

Nerves can cause it:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 365June 10, 2023 10:23 AM

R364, obviously, things like dehydration can cause cramps, but Alcarez said in a post-match interview that he thought that “the tension” of the match had caused him to cramp. During the second set, he looked unhappy and was barking at his box, things you normally never see from him, and at the end of that set he started to cramp.

by Anonymousreply 366June 10, 2023 1:51 PM

This women's final has suddenly become...compelling

by Anonymousreply 367June 10, 2023 2:53 PM

For any who care about the compelling match: Svee wins in three sets.

by Anonymousreply 370June 10, 2023 4:11 PM

Poor baby Carlitos. I feel for him. Novaxx was ruthless

by Anonymousreply 371June 10, 2023 4:12 PM

Meh—

But I do like Muchova’s game…apparently she’s very well regarded by her fellow players. They like her style of play.

by Anonymousreply 372June 10, 2023 4:12 PM

Never saw iga so rattled before

by Anonymousreply 373June 10, 2023 4:42 PM

This whole French Open affair would have been far more interesting if Rafa had been in play.

by Anonymousreply 374June 10, 2023 5:08 PM

Iga is actually super fortunate she pulled that out. Great second and third sets for sure.

by Anonymousreply 375June 10, 2023 5:49 PM

There are people over at tennis warehouse speculating that Carlitos might have had cramps so early in the match because he took some diuretics to flush banned substances. Now I think this is BS but it reminded me of one fun episode of my life.

Two years ago, mid COVID, I bet that I would weight less than 80 kg before a given date (let's say three months later) and if I won my boyfriend would pay all the expenses for our vacation (instead of the usual 50-50 and, of course, if COVID so allowed). I did lost most of the weight but the day before weighing was due, I was still 3 kg above the target weight, with no chance of making it in time, so I sneaked into my dad's medicine cabinet, "borrowed" a couple of the diuretic pills I know he takes and downed them. And then I peed and peed and peed, I just couldn't stop peeing, it was awesome, and nobody would ever know as I was home alone. I lost at least one gallon of water, so obviously I had reached my goal the very next day.

The plan would have worked A-Okay if out of nowhere I didn't start to have cramps all the time, everywhere. It's like I couldn't move a single muscle without cramping. And alas the cramps blew my cover since the boyfriend knew better (he's a RN). (It also didn't help that my father called a couple days later, and complained while on speaker that one of the blisters in the box of furosemide pills had been desecrated before he himself had ever opened the pack!)

Oh and I think Iga is adorable with that trophy!! She and Rybakina are my tennis babes. Hot!!

by Anonymousreply 395June 11, 2023 1:19 AM

Can't stand her attitude

Hate her

Love when she is losing,

she always has poor sportsmanship

Hope she goes on a losing streak

by Anonymousreply 400June 11, 2023 3:47 AM

Siwatek acts like a spoiled brat when she is losing. I only watch her matches when her opponent is beating her badly.

Her last match with Rybakina was by far my favorite. The Miami match I believe it was when Rybakina came back after losing first set and took the second and Siwatek started to cry and withdrew from the match

Oh it was glorious . Also the one against Barbora last Fall when Barbora won. An again Iga started to cry. One more the Davis Cup match against Pegula, when Pegula won and Iga started crying

by Anonymousreply 401June 11, 2023 3:57 AM

That was at the Italian Ope, R401. Swiatek withdrew early in the Miami tournament.

Rybakina kicked Swiatek’s ass in the Australian and at IW. Rybakina has her number.

by Anonymousreply 402June 11, 2023 4:00 AM

Iga cried when she won this French Open final. And Muchova cried when she lost. It's kind of normal, the pressure and stakes are so high.

by Anonymousreply 403June 11, 2023 4:02 AM

Stfu r403

by Anonymousreply 404June 11, 2023 4:07 AM

I hope Rybakina is resting , healthy and ready to defend her Wimbledon title

by Anonymousreply 405June 11, 2023 4:08 AM

Muchova cried tears of joy. Nobody pegged her to go so far Reflecting on how far she has come since last FO when she left in a cast on her foot.

Iga's tears were tears of rage and anger after she lost. Similar to Novaxx tears when he lost to Medvedev at US open

by Anonymousreply 406June 11, 2023 4:14 AM

Oh my sweet summer child, those weren't 'tears of joy'.

by Anonymousreply 407June 11, 2023 4:16 AM

Ha, that's nothing, R397. I stole the whole Hingis head!

by Anonymousreply 408June 11, 2023 4:28 AM

Watching the match now. I eaxh time the camera pans to lezzy and her coach, they try to appear so capm and confident. IGA's team gets on my last nerve. Muchova handed iga this win with errors. I love Muchova 's cool and calm demeanor

by Anonymousreply 409June 11, 2023 4:44 AM

The biggest disappointment is Caroline Garcia. Last summer she started winning titles, made it to the USO semi, then had one of her disinterested bad patches, but got it together to win the season ender. This year she's been a flop. Injured? Bored? It was obvious the pressure at Roland Garros was going to overwhelm her, and it did. She would have been the favorite for Wimbledon, she and Sabs duking it out would be great. She lost early to that underwhelming Alicia Parks, and it just got worse and worse.

by Anonymousreply 412June 11, 2023 9:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 417June 11, 2023 1:53 PM

Ruud playing very well, but Djokovic right there.

by Anonymousreply 418June 11, 2023 2:00 PM

Let's hope Ruud wins!

A question. They just commented on NBC, and on several media outlets, that Carlos' cramping was due to the moment (blah, blah, blah).... The man has won one Slam already, isn't that cramping excuse because of nerves bs?

by Anonymousreply 419June 11, 2023 2:23 PM

R419 I agree, something doesn't add up with that story. He's never been intimidated by the occasion and this was the most efficient slam he's played in terms of managing time on court.

by Anonymousreply 442June 11, 2023 7:43 PM

No one likes Novak and now he's the official GOAT, R442

Fed and Rafa are clearly the two everyone loves. Who in the heck wants to listen to tennis matches now that we'll also have to hear how Novak has ascended to the top of the heap? Not me.

I wonder if tennis will now fade in popularity even more than it already has? I bet it does.

by Anonymousreply 443June 11, 2023 7:54 PM

I love Novak. I hate Roger for being the phony fairy princess he truly is, and Rafa's never ending medical ailments that are always the reason he loses matches, is plain nuts.

YOU Novak haters can delight in the exploits of Hawt(!) Felix and wimpy Caspar. I'll take rude Rune over those 2 any day.

by Anonymousreply 444June 11, 2023 8:12 PM

I'll continue to watch and play tennis for love of the sport, R443, just not Djokovic matches. And it will be a pleasure to see his inevitable decline. I don't doubt that fewer are watching these GS finals, as was the case with the last AO. Alcaraz and a few others have the charisma to bring in good ratings eventually. I'm curious to see what the ratings are like for the Ruud-Djokovic final.

Fortunately, R444, you and your obnoxious posts are in the miniscule minority around here.

by Anonymousreply 445June 11, 2023 8:18 PM

If he is tied with Serena for Grand Slam wins, how the fuck can he be considered the GOAT?

by Anonymousreply 448June 12, 2023 2:01 AM

R434 , great point

by Anonymousreply 449June 12, 2023 2:01 AM

R448, Djokovic and Serena are not direct competitors. The women have not played best of five sets in slams for a very long time.

by Anonymousreply 450June 12, 2023 2:34 AM

This bullshit about Slam wins deciding who’s the greatest is tiring and asinine. No one thought Roy Emerson was the greatest while he held that record.

by Anonymousreply 453June 12, 2023 3:34 AM

R451, when it comes to Big 3? It's 100% about Slams. They each have said that. They each said that was the goal and so it's been understood that he who wins the most Slams wins the GOAT debate.

And unlike Emerson v Laver, say, they all played against each other for most of their careers. Professionally. And all 4 Slams were equal in value. And just as accessible. Which wasn't the case until the mid 90s, when the Aussie Open became a real Slam instead of one in name only.

Nobody is more upset that Novak won the war. But he did.

by Anonymousreply 463June 12, 2023 6:01 AM

Novak can win the GS this year, and likely win the Olympics next year, maybe a final reckoning with Nadal, and then retire. We'll see how this spurs on Rafa. Carlos will probably be 'injured' - or suspended.

by Anonymousreply 464June 12, 2023 8:02 AM

Venus loses to a player ranks just outside the top 200.

No doubt Wimbledon will award her a wild card for her efforts.

by Anonymousreply 499June 13, 2023 4:55 PM

They need to say 'enough, you can play with the Legends' but I suppose they think people will go to see her.

by Anonymousreply 500June 13, 2023 5:41 PM

When she got an Aussie Open wild card, people defended it, saying champions of her level should have ready access to all majors.

I don’t see whom it benefits. Venus was an amazing champ (especially beautiful to watch on grass) but watching her today it’s sad to me. I mean, she couldn’t keep up with the 202nd ranked player. Thanks not a player who can contend.

by Anonymousreply 501June 13, 2023 7:11 PM

Players should learn from Barty. Retire at the top

by Anonymousreply 502June 13, 2023 7:25 PM

Barty retired too early - she was no. 1, had JUST won another slam and then suddenly retired? I still don't really understand that; she could have gone on to win more. I think players can judge better than that - not at your top but not like Venus when you're old in tennis terms and can't even win first rounds.

by Anonymousreply 503June 13, 2023 7:38 PM

Barty is certainly a mystery. She was loved by the fans and she was great. She could have waited, at least, five years.

by Anonymousreply 504June 13, 2023 8:08 PM

I think COVID lockdowns freaked out Barty, and she wanted to marry/have kids young. I can see her returning. The Lord called Mags Court back several times. The Lord and $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

by Anonymousreply 505June 13, 2023 8:51 PM

I don’t think she was happy on tour.

She doesn’t crave attention. I get the feeling she’s blissful just being home in Australia with her friends and husband and just living life.

by Anonymousreply 506June 13, 2023 8:52 PM

Elina Svitolina is already back on tour and got a great QF at Roland Garros not that long after having a kid. Barty I think just didn't like the tour. Same with Osaka and her mental breakdown.

by Anonymousreply 507June 13, 2023 8:57 PM

Granny Vee needs an intervention. She's embarrassing herself and the WTA.

by Anonymousreply 508June 13, 2023 9:38 PM

It took Murray several years and constant panhandling for Wild Cards to just get back into the top sixty. We should give Venus a couple of months at least - but today was definitely not positive.

by Anonymousreply 509June 13, 2023 10:50 PM

Venus will be 43 in 4 days' time. It's not going to happen. It's just an age thing.

by Anonymousreply 510June 13, 2023 10:54 PM

She’s been locked in this pattern for years. She periodically re-emerges for a tourney or two then is gone for 6+ months.

I really like her (though wish she’s outgrow her “sullen teen” press conference bullshit) but she hasn’t played. Credible match for quite some time. She might take a set but runs out gas against a player she’d have double-bageled in her prime.

by Anonymousreply 511June 13, 2023 10:54 PM

R508, you're embarrassing yourself with this stupid comment how about that?

by Anonymousreply 512June 13, 2023 11:55 PM

Suicidal Nick Kyrgios admitted into psych ward after 2019 Wimbledon loss

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 519June 14, 2023 4:18 PM

The controversial tennis star was admitted into a London psychiatric ward due to suicidal thoughts following Wimbledon in 2019, Australian media reported Wednesday, citing the second season of the Netflix docu-series.

“I was genuinely contemplating if I wanted to commit suicide,” Kyrgios said in the sixth episode titled “Belonging,” which will be released on June 21.

The Australian lost a tight four-setter to Rafael Nadal in the second round, but the loss had a much bigger impact on him than just his career record.

“’I lost at Wimbledon. I woke up and my dad was sitting on the bed, full-blown crying. That was the big wake-up call for me. I was like: ‘OK, I can’t keep doing this.’ I ended up in a psych ward in London to figure out my problems,“ said Kyrgios, who was also featured in the first season of “Break Point.”

The 10-year pro had been dealing with mental health struggles prior to being admitted to the psychiatric ward, so much so that during Wimbledon, the star wore a sleeve to cover up marks of self-harm.

“If you look closely, on my right arm you can see my self-harm,” Kyrigos, now 28, said in an Instagram post last year.

“I was having suicidal thoughts and was literally struggling to get out of bed, let alone play in front of millions.”

According to Kyrgios, attending Wimbledon back in 2019 was the lowest point of his career due to the pressure and expectations that came along with it, not only from fans and the media but also from himself.

“If I win Wimbledon, it’s like a middle finger to everyone,” Kyrgios said prior to his appearance at Wimbledon a year ago, when he lost in the finals to Novak Djokovic.

“I’m here to show that I’m one of the best players in the world. They say: ‘He can beat anybody, but he can’t really be consistent enough to push for a Grand Slam.’ I just want to shut everyone up.”

Kyrgios has said he has found mental stability since that scary time when he said he was abusing alcohol and drugs.

He missed the Australian Open this year with a knee injury.

Kyrgios then suffered a foot injury when his Tesla was stolen and his mom was held at gunpoint during a harrowing incident last month that forced him to withdraw from the French Open.

I was just looking at the qualifying draw for the 500 Cinch tournament next week, and it lists Paul as the number one seed. That just can't be right. His ranking was never that low this year. Has to be a mistake, right?

He's like 17 that's not possible

Tommy Paul was 26 on May 17 - and he's ranked 15th in the ATP rankings. (higher than I thought)

He's not just cute. He's a very decent player. He can beat most of the top men on a good day.

Maybe Tommy is rated #1 just among the "qualifiers" at the Queen's Club Championships. The seeded ones don't have to do qualifiers ?

Number 15 in the world would never have to play a qualifier.
