The concept of hymen and virginity are rooted in patriarchy and related to women's purity and marriageability. Men were obsessed with paternity, bloodlines and having heirs, so women were expected to be faithful to their husbands to not lead to conflict of interest (say if that child wasn't biologically theirs). Virgins were usually young and just menstruating (girls started menstruating in their mid to late teens in ancient times), so ideal as fertile (can make tons of heirs since most kids died early) and untouched.
