Fag was used that way but it also was used in a tangential way that sometimes had nothing to do with sexuality, and sometimes was a hybrid that was more like playfully calling someone a 'fairy,' which people still can do with a chuckle and without backlash.

I watched old 30 Rock episodes during the pandemic. I could not believe it when Liz Lemon called someone a fag. I was really floored. The episode was produced and aired in 2008. Tina Fey wrote and acted out a scene in which her character called someone a fag as a punchline in 2008.

Davis did an interview in the Advocate in 1977, well before many stars would appear in the paper(it was a newspaper not magazine at that time). I doubt that since Bette was by most accounts stunned that BD would think of writing such a book about her.

I don't know how many people have read the book but despite all of BD's efforts, I thought Bette just came off as human. I mean who cares if she took the frozen mac and cheese out and defrosted it before cooking it (not supposed to), and put tomatoes on top of it? That was one stupid complaint I remember.
