Maybe she was asking for a British cigarette.

by Anonymousreply 1June 3, 2023 6:38 PM

Well, if the shoe fits...

by Anonymousreply 2June 3, 2023 7:00 PM

I mean that’s a pretty faggy haircut on that kid.

by Anonymousreply 3June 3, 2023 7:08 PM

Bitch hated me but I at least would have called him Little Homosexual Boy.

by Anonymousreply 4June 3, 2023 7:24 PM

I don't care if someone born in 1908 used a slur like everyone else did in their day. If you wanna go that far back in history, focus on the figures like Ronald Raegan who caused real and irreparable harm.

by Anonymousreply 5June 3, 2023 7:40 PM

B.D. Hyman is a lunatic.

She is certifiably insane. She has nutty Christian videos on YouTube.

Christina Crawford always seems reasonable and thoughtful to me in interviews but Bette's daughter is without a doubt an unreliable source.

by Anonymousreply 6June 3, 2023 7:40 PM

Well, Bette wasn't wrong although she could have put it a tad more delicately. Ol' witch.

by Anonymousreply 7June 3, 2023 8:02 PM

R7 - after Hyman began her Christian ministry, she also accused La Bette of practicing the dark arts and being demon possessed.

by Anonymousreply 8June 3, 2023 8:22 PM

my memory is that in the 1960s the word wasn't as loaded. hard to imagine really.

Streisand uses the word in a line of dialog in Owl and the Pussycat, correct?

by Anonymousreply 9June 3, 2023 10:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 10June 3, 2023 10:31 PM

BD is a crazy bitch. I don’t believe a word.

by Anonymousreply 11June 3, 2023 10:40 PM

Is this the grandson that recently died?

by Anonymousreply 12June 3, 2023 10:41 PM

Bette also said old age ain’t for sissies. What a homophobe!

by Anonymousreply 13June 3, 2023 10:47 PM

This video should just be imbedded in DL's interface, its posted like once a month just to remind us Bette Davis called her grandson a faggot down in 1991😂

by Anonymousreply 14June 3, 2023 11:24 PM

We had an entire thread on Old Hollywood stars and whether or not they were homophobic. Hear your answer.

by Anonymousreply 15June 3, 2023 11:27 PM

Bette Davis can call be a fag all day long.

by Anonymousreply 16June 4, 2023 12:03 AM

She sounded like an old BITCH

Just what the dl worships

by Anonymousreply 17June 4, 2023 12:07 AM

I worked with Bette Midler once, and she was the same way. You'd think she would support the gay community 100%, but she had a weird, eye-rolling attitude towards them. She'd be like, "Oh God, what are the gays up to now?"

by Anonymousreply 18June 4, 2023 12:27 AM

Hyman is insane. Bette Davis was happy to work with and befriend gay men througout her career.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19June 4, 2023 1:32 AM

Someone should have savagely slapped Joan Rivers for having that batshit harridan on her show.

by Anonymousreply 20June 4, 2023 2:43 AM

[quote]We had an entire thread on Old Hollywood stars and whether or not they were homophobic. Hear your answer.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 21June 4, 2023 4:53 AM

And she smoked, too! She must be canceled.

by Anonymousreply 22June 4, 2023 5:02 AM

Cancel her NOW!!!

She has been dead since 1989, but who gives a shit.

Erase all her movies from all digital databases.

Erase her name from Census records!

This makes Joan Crawford the WINNER of the Old Hollywood war for attention unless it comes out that Joan ever said anything that is offensive today, and YES, it counts if what she said was in a script. If anything is found, exhume her body and string it up on the Washington Monument as an example of what happens to you when you're born into the wrong time period and your vocabulary evolves to become offensive to someone.

Do it now. Don't delay. Death to dead celebrities who did not live as saints.

by Anonymousreply 23June 4, 2023 10:30 AM

She also, literally, claimed she witnessed her mother turn into some kind of evil creature with claws, and float outside her bedroom window. It's on a tape called BD Hyman's Testimony on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 24June 4, 2023 11:05 AM

"Is this the grandson that recently died?"

WHO

by Anonymousreply 25June 4, 2023 11:16 AM

Bette adored Roddy McDowall!

by Anonymousreply 26June 4, 2023 11:37 AM

I was born in 1978.

My childhood was the 1980s.

Kids called one another "nerd,' "dweeb," "geek" and "fag" interchangeably. They were terms-of-endearment insults that meant nothing specific. My sister called me "fag" throughout our young lives and she feels sooooo guilty about it. She never was thinking of sexuality at all; it was just an all-purpose insult. I called her a lot of names, and none of those has become a taboo word.

Comedy movies throughout the 80s use the word fag for jokes constantly. So did comedians. The word was used to refer to gay people and the word also was used as a cultural 'haha' vocabulary word. It's not exactly the same as n**** in that that word was always used hatefully and in a way that implied inferiority. Fag was used that way but it also was used in a tangential way that sometimes had nothing to do with sexuality, and sometimes was a hybrid that was more like playfully calling someone a 'fairy,' which people still can do with a chuckle and without backlash.

I watched old 30 Rock episodes during the pandemic. I could not believe it when Liz Lemon called someone a fag. I was really floored. The episode was produced and aired in 2008. Tina Fey wrote and acted out a scene in which her character called someone a fag as a punchline in 2008.

Cultural norms change very quickly.

by Anonymousreply 27June 4, 2023 11:46 AM

[quote]B.D. Hyman is a lunatic.

That's true, but I love watching her - she looks and sounds like Bette.

by Anonymousreply 28June 4, 2023 12:30 PM

This woman refers to her children, plural, in the clip but the internet has descriptions of only one child for her. What’s up with that?

by Anonymousreply 29June 4, 2023 3:16 PM

Also, she seems somewhat fragile and easily torn, so she married into the right last name I guess.

by Anonymousreply 30June 4, 2023 3:18 PM

There were two grandsons. One allegedly recently died. I've found no information on them.

by Anonymousreply 31June 4, 2023 3:20 PM

[quote] She'd be like, "Oh God, what are the gays up to now?"

Well darling, the bitch wasn’t wrong.

by Anonymousreply 32June 4, 2023 3:24 PM

[quote] claimed she witnessed her mother turn into some kind of evil creature with claws, and float outside her bedroom window.

Now THAT I believe

by Anonymousreply 33June 4, 2023 3:25 PM

[quote] Bette adored Roddy McDowall!

Well she just assumed he was that way because he was British.

by Anonymousreply 34June 4, 2023 3:27 PM

Bette was great friends with actor Jay Robinson (Caligula in the film he Robe), who I thought was gay but he was in 2 long term marriages with women.

by Anonymousreply 35June 4, 2023 3:29 PM

*The Robe

by Anonymousreply 36June 4, 2023 3:29 PM

Bette famously was happy to look the other way when her costars were gay but if they were attractive to her she allegedly blackmailed them and made them spit roast her to 'toughen them up so they would be commanding leading men onscreen.'

'It all comes down to craft,' she said.

by Anonymousreply 37June 4, 2023 3:33 PM

Look, Bette loved the gays. She just didn't want her grandson to become one!

by Anonymousreply 38June 4, 2023 3:41 PM

I once read Elizabeth Taylor said to someone about Marilyn Monroe, “Get that dyke away from me.” Should we cancel her?

by Anonymousreply 39June 4, 2023 3:41 PM

R38 Look

by Anonymousreply 40June 4, 2023 4:10 PM

Looked up the kid (Justin Hyman). Looks like he grew up into a MAGAt. He’d have been way better off as a fag.

by Anonymousreply 41June 4, 2023 4:21 PM

R41 Any links?

by Anonymousreply 42June 4, 2023 4:23 PM

That's not surprising, R41, considering Mother Hyman

by Anonymousreply 43June 4, 2023 4:25 PM

Homophobia is fine. Look the other way. Let’s talk about reparations and equity.

by Anonymousreply 44June 4, 2023 4:28 PM

It was hilarious the way that Ryan Murphy portrayed Bette Davis to be a huge gay advocate in Feud. Revisionist history.

by Anonymousreply 45June 4, 2023 4:29 PM

R42 Found justin_hyman24 on Twitter. Seems to be him. Bunch of Fox News/Trump likes by him.

by Anonymousreply 46June 4, 2023 4:54 PM

Revisionist history, my eye, R45, unless you're talking about Hyman. Bette used to go to gay bars when they were still illegal, and she praised the gay community when the topic was brought up in her touring shows. Plus some of her closest friends were gay.

by Anonymousreply 47June 4, 2023 5:24 PM

R23, get that stick out of your ass and calm the fuck down, Mary!

by Anonymousreply 48June 4, 2023 5:27 PM

Bette hated Joan because she made a pass at her. Her longtime assistant who just wrote about about her time with Bette confirmed it.

by Anonymousreply 49June 4, 2023 5:28 PM

I love a fag who can fix my hair and make a mean cocktail!

by Anonymousreply 50June 4, 2023 5:28 PM

Bette had major repressed Dyke vibes.

by Anonymousreply 51June 4, 2023 5:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 54June 4, 2023 7:33 PM

R46 I don't think that's him - he would be in his 50s now.

by Anonymousreply 55June 4, 2023 9:32 PM

One of BD’s sons played the lead with Bette in the TV movie, Family Reunion.

by Anonymousreply 56June 5, 2023 12:01 AM

BD is batshit insane. Anything she claims, believe the opposite.

by Anonymousreply 57June 5, 2023 12:29 AM

KATE, er Katharine the only penis you ever saw was your own!

by Anonymousreply 58June 5, 2023 1:15 AM

R29 BD is Bette's only biological child. When Bette and Gary Merrill married, they adopted two children, Michael and Margot.

by Anonymousreply 59June 5, 2023 1:43 AM

And BD had two children, both boys

by Anonymousreply 60June 5, 2023 1:48 AM

Weren't most slang words for gay in Bette's era a slur? The American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973. ... and using the word "homosexual" was not conversational somehow, it was a clinical term. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I remember it. All these terms that are so offensive now were the real words friends and family used. And they were insulting, derogatory, etc.... but that's what people were really thinking. For the most part, there was no hate intended.

by Anonymousreply 65June 5, 2023 3:49 PM

All the slang used is now considered offensive ALL OF IT. Nothing like bitching about the way people were then. It's useless.

by Anonymousreply 66June 5, 2023 4:12 PM

Most people said "fairy."

by Anonymousreply 68June 5, 2023 6:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 69June 5, 2023 6:37 PM

For some reason the thought crossed my mind of her telling her daughter, “But he is Blanche, he is a faggot. 😂

by Anonymousreply 70June 5, 2023 6:54 PM

My grandmother used to routinely refer to all gay men as faggots even when complimentary. “Those faggots sure are crafty.” “I think people should leave those faggots alone.” She stopped about 25 yrs ago. I think was she was becoming aware of its horrid use as a slur and becoming a fan of Anderson Cooper. When in college I explained to her that faggot is the equivalent of nigger to gay people she never uttered that word again not once not even sometimes which she would do after using mostly using the word homosexual or gay.

by Anonymousreply 71June 5, 2023 6:59 PM

She told him to get her a fag. She meant a cigarette.

by Anonymousreply 72June 5, 2023 9:34 PM

^ Bette was from NEW England, not England

by Anonymousreply 73June 5, 2023 10:51 PM

r46 the Justin Hyman you looked up is not Bette's grandson.

by Anonymousreply 74June 5, 2023 11:48 PM

Someone needs to find out information about these grandsons, likely in their 50s, although I seem to remember someone suggesting that one died in the last year or so.

by Anonymousreply 75June 6, 2023 12:59 AM

The younger grandson's Instagram. He loves Ducati bikes! He's in his mid-40s now. The older grandson died a few years ago.

BD has two sons, Justin and Ashley. Are you telling me that she has two sons named Justin?!

by Anonymousreply 106June 6, 2023 3:22 AM

If he said his brother who died was Jeremy or Ashley, that would make a stronger case. JAH could easily fit but it still isn’t concrete proof. I wonder why he doesn’t use his name in his profile.

by Anonymousreply 107June 6, 2023 3:24 AM

Can we find Justin anywhere else on social media?

by Anonymousreply 108June 6, 2023 3:24 AM

R106 Get a grip

by Anonymousreply 109June 6, 2023 3:25 AM

r106 you're just hopeless then. This is Justin Hyman, BD's son. He posted his brother's year of birth (1969) in his obituary post. BD's son Jeremy Ashley Hyman was born in 1969. Justin looks a lot like his grandmother. I'm sure BD hates that.

by Anonymousreply 110June 6, 2023 3:25 AM

If that’s Justin, he follows an account called Trump Toilet Paper.

by Anonymousreply 111June 6, 2023 3:26 AM

Okay, with the 1969 thing, it does add up. I’d love to find him on Facebook or Twitter now. Looks like he’s in Virginia. Is that where BD lives?

by Anonymousreply 112June 6, 2023 3:28 AM

So Justin wasn’t the one who co-started in a film with Bette then. That’s the one who died.

by Anonymousreply 113June 6, 2023 3:29 AM

How did you find this Instagram account?

by Anonymousreply 114June 6, 2023 3:29 AM

BD lives in Charlottesville.

by Anonymousreply 115June 6, 2023 3:29 AM

R112 Yes, doofus. Do some searching of your own. BD has lived in VA for years running her horrid ministry.

R118 BD has only been married once. Use google.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 119June 6, 2023 3:34 AM

BD and her husband were a bunch of lazy grifters who didn't like to work. Bette supported them financially for two decades, and she supported them very comfortably. Bette also supported her mother and sister for their whole lives. She should've been a wealthy woman but she had leeching relatives who constantly sucked away her money.

BD wrote her ridiculous book after Bette had the strokes and wasn't expected to live. It was a money grab because she was afraid her mother wouldn't be around to support her anymore. She's a horrid person.

BTW, Bette's strokes were caused by alcohol withdrawal when she was in the hospital recovering from her mastectomy. They could've been easily prevented if the hospital staff had recognized what was going on.

by Anonymousreply 126June 6, 2023 4:19 AM

She always said PT instead of BD. lol

by Anonymousreply 127June 6, 2023 4:43 AM

R124 Yes. I also wonder if BD ever ended up getting anything from Bette's estate 'on the side' in any manner, even after being excluded from the will. I know Bette's son Michael was given the means to take care of Bette's special needs child by way of a medical plan Bette had instated years before. Bette's son Michael had publicly stated over the years that he did not agree with BD's book, and that they had not spoken.

by Anonymousreply 128June 6, 2023 10:19 AM

BD was named Barbara Davis Sherry. Her son Ashley was in the TV movie with Bette, Family Reunion.

by Anonymousreply 129June 6, 2023 3:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 132June 6, 2023 6:21 PM

Lately every time I see this thread I think this is such a moronic thread. So what if she did? Is it intended to be funny. Is is suppose to make us re-evaluate our opinion of BD? For much of American culture homosexuality was viewed as something very unnatural and a mental illness. It wasn’t until the 80s that those attitudes changed. Faggot has always been a slur but simultaneously all monikers of homosexuals were deem as profane language because all homosexuals were deemed as deviants.

by Anonymousreply 133June 6, 2023 6:45 PM

When Bette updated her autobiography she referred to BD as just Hyman.

by Anonymousreply 134June 6, 2023 6:56 PM

In her later years, Bette Davis's social circle had a lot of gay men in it.

by Anonymousreply 137June 6, 2023 8:55 PM

Surprisingly!

by Anonymousreply 138June 7, 2023 12:03 AM

BD and Barbara Leaming’s book, neither kind to Bette, claim she collected gay male friends and tried to convert them to heterosexuality by showing them what a real woman could do for them.

Leaming’s book describes Bette drunkenly sitting in a sofa in such a way that would gradually reveal she wasn’t wearing underwear to seduce men.

by Anonymousreply 145August 16, 2025 7:22 PM

Do you honestly think Bette Davis never used the word fag? C’mon now. She wasn’t really down with gays. Joan Crawford was all about them. Bette hated Joan because she came onto her as confirmed by her assistant who she treated as her daughter.

by Anonymousreply 146August 16, 2025 7:37 PM

Bette went in blackface for her 70th birthday.

by Anonymousreply 147August 16, 2025 7:39 PM

OK, so BD Hyman is a nutcase. How could she not turn out to be a nutcase with a mother like Bette? I don't put it past Davis to be a homophobic bitch because that was a perfectly acceptable thing in the 50s and 60s and she was a bitch about everything, so why would she spare the gays?

by Anonymousreply 148August 16, 2025 7:58 PM

And I call Bette's daughter a raving lunatic cunt. From the very start.

by Anonymousreply 149August 16, 2025 8:09 PM

The "fag" died suddenly in 2022 per his brother's weird IG account. He at least looked well-fed.

And here's BD with her late husband right before he died. It seems like they have a lot of means - as Jeremy A. Hyman was a film exec and the nephew of the founder of Seven Arts. The older grandson is a gear head with a very odd IG. Lots of Biden bashing last year...

Multiple people claimed Bette used the word faggot and queer and believed that gay men were too influenced by their mothers. She was not accepting of their “lifestyles” at all.

by Anonymousreply 152August 16, 2025 8:44 PM

BD mowing. This is one very odd family with seemingly no idea how utterly infamous they are for their betrayal and dysfunction.

Going through that one grandson’s IG, he seems to be a MAGAt. I’m not surprised considering how much of a religious nut his mom turned out to be. (She reminds me of Carrie’s mother.)

by Anonymousreply 154August 16, 2025 8:58 PM

After Jeremy died the oldest son moved his mother to Virginia where she uses a walker (she was 70...). Seems like they were wealthy and then in 1988 it all crashed, then Bette died a year later and they got nothing. Karma?

Bette grandson is dead?

R154 Did you notice he posted his house just burned down?

[quote] And here's BD with her late husband right before he died. It seems like they have a lot of means - as Jeremy A. Hyman was a film exec and the nephew of the founder of Seven Arts.

Does being the nephew of the founder of Seven Arts (rather than the son) necessarily mean one is rich?

I don't see any credits for Jeremy on IMDB.

r156 Yes, one of them died. The other is still alive. His house burned down. He still has an active Go Fund Me to help.

The living one - Justin - was cute in that Bd/Joan Rivers clip. He's very camera shy in his Instagram.

by Anonymousreply 159August 17, 2025 2:22 PM

I think we need to cancel Bette Davis. She was such a mild, accommodating and polite figure and this remark was so out of character for her.

by Anonymousreply 160August 17, 2025 2:25 PM

I might believe it if it came from a different source. I hate BD. I always like to take this SNL skit as the fitting end to her.

R125 She had no talent.

by Anonymousreply 162August 17, 2025 2:36 PM

I always wonder why Bette bought a house in Westport, Connecticut--since she had no connection to the state.

She usually chose to live north of Boston. In Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, overlooking the White Mountains, or Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on the coast, next door to Portland. Or else she lived in Laguna Beach. But she also lived in Bel Air.

I'm always surprised to see the remodeled interior of one of these older homes in New England, R142. Driving by, you would never expect them to look like that inside.

by Anonymousreply 163August 17, 2025 3:17 PM

"Twin Bridges"

She liked to name her homes. If you look at Google maps you can see the house is on a corner lot and the front of it actually faces the other street, not Mile Road, though the address is 1 Mile Road.

by Anonymousreply 164August 17, 2025 3:25 PM

You have to admit it's a hilarious word!

by Anonymousreply 165August 17, 2025 3:28 PM

r165 That "joke" was stupid when it started - now it's totally played out and tired.

by Anonymousreply 166August 17, 2025 3:43 PM

I want to message the living grandson and say I'll donate to your gofundme if you first answer some questions...

1. What was your mom REALLY like? She has always seemed like an unstable whack job

2. Did she ever have any way of making money off of her mom, besides the stupid book?

3. Does the nice brother who said BD Hyman made up all that shit still not speak to BD after all these years?

4. Will you post a video of your mom saying hi to DL?

by Anonymousreply 167August 17, 2025 3:45 PM

Bette’s mom had good taste.

by Anonymousreply 168August 17, 2025 4:47 PM

Yes, r167, please do. Hilarity ensues...

by Anonymousreply 169August 17, 2025 5:05 PM

Davis did an interview in the Advocate in 1977, well before many stars would appear in the paper(it was a newspaper not magazine at that time). This is a quote from that interview "[on gay men:] let me say, a more artistic, appreciative group of people for the arts does not exist ... They are more knowledgeable, more loving of the arts. They make the average male look stupid." Based on that, she seemed to appreciate her gay fans.

I lifted this post from a Bette thread from 2020.

by Anonymousreply 170August 17, 2025 5:11 PM

I remember a few (or more) years ago when Michael Merrill's wife died. I think her nickname was Choo or Chu. There was a lot about her in the local papers, apparently she was active in the community and well liked.

R146, link?

I’m not saying it was just one thing. They were very different people after all. But I always thought Bette having an affair with Franchot Tone while Joan was engaged to him was where they really got off to a bad start.

That was 1935.

by Anonymousreply 173August 17, 2025 5:17 PM

Reminds me a little bit of Sally Field. Or Fields, for some of you who say it that way.

by Anonymousreply 174August 17, 2025 5:17 PM

r172 Interesting how It mentions her in-laws Bette/Gary and the one sister Margot - but not BD.

by Anonymousreply 175August 17, 2025 6:04 PM

Good for Michael. I’m rarely for cutting off family, but BD is a nut. She found Jesus and it became her whole life and given half a chance she’d make it yours too.

by Anonymousreply 176August 17, 2025 6:13 PM

This is a really nice obit for Margot. It does mention her sister Barbara and her family but as in an afterthought.

by Anonymousreply 177August 17, 2025 6:16 PM

BD is listed as "Barbara Davis" not Hyman.

by Anonymousreply 178August 17, 2025 6:18 PM

r177 Wow, that is interesting "She was the sister to Michael Merrill of Brookline who loved her so much." and then almost an afterthought of "Oh yeh, and that other sister..."

I wonder what BD thought of that write up. I'm guessing BD did not ever visit her.

by Anonymousreply 179August 17, 2025 6:24 PM

I wonder if Bette ever visited her?

by Anonymousreply 180August 17, 2025 6:25 PM

It's cool that some of the family ended up back in Boston and Down East, anyhow. Gary also. Bette spent her last years in Hollywood (WeHo).

by Anonymousreply 181August 17, 2025 6:29 PM

[quote]She found Jesus and it became her whole life and given half a chance she’d make it yours too.

After reading her son Justin's IG account, it seems to me that BD was a simpleton and that her husband Jeremy was rather malevolent and controlling - and the brains of the operation. Money was his goal and so, when they thought Bette was dying, pulled this stunt with BD's book. But Bette recovered and so they doubled down. I'd always thought Jeremy was a shadow and non-entity, but the son's IG shows he was the source of all decision-making and thus, likely all the drama.

by Anonymousreply 182August 18, 2025 11:54 AM

Bette supported BD and Jeremy for 20 years. They were a couple of lazy shits who didn't want to work, and Bette supported them at a very comfortable level. It was an awful situation. What r182 wrote is true, they had no way of making money when Bette became very ill and it was thought she might die so that was why BD wrote the book. It was all about the money.

by Anonymousreply 183August 18, 2025 12:06 PM

BD could have written a tribute photo book like Cheryl Crane wrote about Lana Turner. If she wanted to make money off Bette.

by Anonymousreply 184August 18, 2025 2:12 PM

During an interview for the BFI or BBC she said "an actor was not quite a man", repeatedly, and cited only Steve McQueen as the exception (a drunk and a coke head). It did come across as quite phobic (and not just about labels). If she'd just said "all actors are gay" that would have come across as slightly less cunty.

by Anonymousreply 185August 18, 2025 4:04 PM

The other people on the panel seem embarrassed to be onstage with her. They suffered real abuse and she's, "Mother was controlling!"

The Hymans sound like an awful family. Bette wanted to get closer to her grandkids, but they turned out to be incorrigible brats and she snapped.

My guess is mother and daughter had a falling-out in the 80s where Bette told her she was disinherited. So BD got to writing.

by Anonymousreply 186August 18, 2025 5:23 PM

My guess is mother and daughter had a falling-out in the 80s where Bette told her she was disinherited. So BD got to writing.

I doubt that since Bette was by most accounts stunned that BD would think of writing such a book about her.

I don't know how many people have read the book but despite all of BD's efforts, I thought Bette just came off as human. I mean who cares if she took the frozen mac and cheese out and defrosted it before cooking it (not supposed to), and put tomatoes on top of it? That was one stupid complaint I remember.

Another time, she described Bette as going through a period of solitary drunkenness where she obviously seemed depressed, and how when they came in the house she hadn't emptied ashtrays, and had stubbed out cigarettes in plants and things like that.

I also remember her talking about a time in Cape Elizabeth where Bette was driving the family car and there was some kind of an argument, and she drove into a ditch, and, I think, put the car in the wrong gear, I mean, who gives a shit? It was more like just airing dirty family laundry. It wasn't like she got strapped to her bed at night.

Huh?

We don’t guess, frau. We deal with FACTS, not fantasy.

by Anonymousreply 189August 18, 2025 8:06 PM

BD’s book was nothing but whining. Christina Crawford’s book was about real child abuse and the studio system which used children for publicity. That being said, Bette Davis was a real piece of work. No one liked her. She was nasty to everyone she meant. She was abusive to older stars and even Jamie Lee Curtis. She was extremely jealous and neurotic. Even the people who took her in their home and she wouldn’t leave for weeks have a horror story to tell about her.

Bette was entertaining but not the sort you’d want to meet.

by Anonymousreply 190August 18, 2025 8:09 PM

r189 wtf?

by Anonymousreply 191August 18, 2025 8:10 PM

Bette was typical of her time. The type that made sure she crossed the street if she saw a “colored” walking towards her.

by Anonymousreply 192August 18, 2025 8:10 PM

The rumor still persists that she killed her husband. The entire thing was suspicious. He fell and hit his head. Word was Bette pushed him in an argument and he fell.

by Anonymousreply 193August 18, 2025 8:11 PM

r193 that's not how it happened. She had nothing to do with his death.

by Anonymousreply 194August 18, 2025 8:14 PM

I mean we were ALL called fabs, but to be called one by Bette Davis?

Gotta think about that.

by Anonymousreply 195August 18, 2025 8:16 PM

Sounds fabulous

by Anonymousreply 196August 18, 2025 8:39 PM

R188 The grandson posted it on Instagram.

r198 he died on a street in LA with dozens of witnesses.

by Anonymousreply 199August 19, 2025 12:02 AM

Miss Davis might have put her time to better use, had she’d decided instead to call her daughter a manatee.

by Anonymousreply 200August 19, 2025 1:42 AM

r200 I don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 201August 19, 2025 2:03 AM

Hearing Ms. Hyman’s description of Bette, it is clear that Madge Harvey on Benidorm is fashioned after Bette Davis!

by Anonymousreply 202August 19, 2025 4:34 AM

I don't know. I like BD. She comes across as very smart.

by Anonymousreply 203August 19, 2025 5:46 AM

Rep 192:

1-Seriously doubt your statement is true. During WW II when some tried to segregate The Hollywood Canteen, cordoning off blacks. Bette wasn't having any of it. She said the black soldiers were taking the bullets too. See the link below to the review of a book about Bette and black people.

2-The comment about her not wearing underwear is suspect. Bette never wore a bra. Watch her boobs as she's walking down the gangplank in Now Voyager. Some costumes, such as the Fasten Your Seatbelts Dress had built-in support.

3-Bette was a practical joker. Her blackface and Afro wig was a joke dealing with turning 70. She was going into "mourning" over it. Of course it was in very bad taste. The author of the aforementioned book questions this event. Think there is a YouTube interview on this subject

4-Seem to remember in the 1977 interview her saying that "gay men want the best of everything". That comment was meant to include her.
