The weird thing is with Madonna, what she's been doing these last few years is weird and ridiculous. However, what IS appropriate for an older, former pop/dance person? I can't picture her just calmly bopping around stage like a Cyndi Lauper or Belinda Carlisle or even the recent Janet Jackson stuff. It would seem fake for her to be that laid back. But this over the top "I'm still 25, bitches" stuff is painful to watch.

R14 - you’ve asked a good question. I think she could have allowed herself to age gracefully - like Helen Mirren, who has obviously had some work done, but not overly obvious work.

As to her performing persona, since she always recontextualized all sorts of musical styles and modes of self-presentation it would have been interesting to see her version of the older, bawdy broad cabaret performer. Somewhere between Mae West, Elaine Stritch, Rusty Warren/Dusty Towne, and Sophie Tucker/Bette Midler - now that would have meant embracing her age as well as a rather outmoded style of performing - but she might have been able to create something interesting.

I’d feel sad for her but she’s living in her own bubble and seems quite content and probably can’t see that she’s become the kind of celebrity she’d likely have reviled in her younger days. My point, Charlie, is that the responses in this thread which are reactions specifically to the video posted at OP are not justified. From reading the replies, I assumed she’d posted an entire new song. It’s clearly meant to be a bit of a joke, not an actual song, not something to be taken seriously, and she actually looks better in that clip — with the exception of her lips— than she has in the last few years.

I’m not saying it’s a good piece of music or that the lyrics are well written, but it’s obvious she’s not presenting it as such, either, so the reactions in this thread to it are a bit silly.

I also remember her not being kind to fatties. It’s shocking she has good things to say and Sam Smith.

I was never a huge fan of hers, but from the mid 80s through at least her Super Bowl performance she certainly knew how to put on a show and stay reasonably relevant in an industry where most careers last months not decades.

I suspect the hatred and derision are mostly cover for surprise, shock and frankly a bit of disappointment. I honestly always thought Madonna would find a more savvy, creative and interesting way to be an elder. Everything she did publicly in her life certainly led you to assume that outcome much more than the one that has actually transpired.

R71 Madge can play a couple of chords, but even Courtney (who has always been a pretty limited guitar player) knows her way around a fretboard better. Granted, Courtney has not played live in years. She's pretty much mimed it/had her guitar buried in the mix ever since she released "Nobody's Daughter", but during Hole's heyday from 1991–1998, she was always playing live. Granted, it was always pretty rudimentary and punk-ish, but she at least had a distinctive jangly/frenetic strumming style going for her. Any time I've seen Madge playing guitar, it comes across as desperate and boring.
