Camilla WILL become the Dowager Queen
Queen Camilla has gone through several title changes in a pretty short span of time: First she was Duchess Camilla due to being the wife of then-Prince Charles. And then once Queen Elizabeth passed away, she started being referred to as Queen Consort Camilla—with emphasis on the consort—presumably to show respect to Queen Elizabeth and make it clear that she didn't hold any sovereign power. But nowadays the whole ~consort~ thing has been dropped, and she's straight-up going by Queen Camilla. But even this will change should Camilla outlive her husband King Charles!
Once Prince William becomes King, his wife Kate Middleton will take up the role of Queen Consort—and likely be known as either Queen Kate or Queen Catherine (depending on how fancy the vibes are). So, where does that leave Queen Camilla?
According to The Mirror, she will officially be known as the Queen Dowager.
We dig into alllll the different types of Queen titles this way, but TLDR; a Queen Dowager is the official name for a widow of a king. If Camilla becomes a Queen Dowager, she'll retain all the importance and perks of her previous position as the consort, just without the title. She'll also likely be referred to as "The Queen Dowager," similarly to how Queen Elizabeth's mother was referred to as "The Queen Mother." Note: Queen Elizabeth's mother was technically also a queen dowager, but wasn't styled as such. Camilla won't be known as "Queen Mother" because she's not the biological mother of England's future monarch!
The last Queen styled as Queen Dowager was Queen Adelaide (the wife of King William IV), who used the title in 1837 after her husband passed away and Queen Victoria ascended the throne. In case you were wondering!

She was never “Duchess Camilla” she was “The Duchess of Cornwall”.
Queen Elizabeth never “passed away”. She died.
Prince William’s wife is The Princess of Wales. She hasn’t been “Kate Middleton” since their marriage in 2011.
If The King predeceases his wife she will be “Queen Camilla”. Her step-daughter in law will be “The Queen”. When King George VI died there were three queens: Queen Elizabeth II, known as “The Queen” through her reign, her mother Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (so called to avoid confusion with her daughter who was also called Elizabeth) and her grandmother Queen Mary.
You might want to exercise caution quoting an article in Cosmo that quotes an article in the Daily Mirror.

I will zombie this thread as I just watched a video claiming that Camilla was extra mean and cut to Catherine.
If that is true, when Charles dies, I want King William to issue letters patent that the former Queen, will now be known as
Princess Charles, Camilla Windsor-Mountbatten Parker-Bowles

The real question is, where does that leave the Duchess of Sussex? Why doesn't the article discuss her potential elevation as well? Is it because she's black?

People seem to forget that "Queen Mother" was only used because having two queens named Elizabeth might have been confusing.
People also getting their panties in a twist over "consort" seem to forget the George VI's wife was known as "Queen Elizabeth" not Queen Consort Elizabeth (which she technically was). It seems very appropriate to have dropped the consort part in every day usage once Charles' reign was well underway.

Trust me, once Charles croaks William will pack that old hag off and she'll rarely be heard from or about again. Charles will likely leave Highgrove to her so she'll be able to live in the lap of luxury for the remainder of her life. Of course, she may not want any public life after he's gone, as long as the money is there.

Both Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary outlived their husbands after Victoria, and went simply by the titles "HM Queen Alexandra" and "HM Queen mary" in the years remaining to them. Why wouldn't the same be done with regards to Queen Camilla?

R2...Thank you...Sister.
Technically, Camilla will be the Queen Dowager or the Dowager Queen. She will undoubtedly just be called Queen Camilla.
The referred to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, as the Queen Mother because she was still comparatively young when she became a widow, and she shared a name with the Queen Regnant.
The British have never really used the term Dowager Queen. Both Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary were simply called that after their respective husbands' deaths.
The only widowed consort called "Dowager" (as I recall) was the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna

Camilla has her own stately home in Wiltshire, Ray Mill House, which has six bedrooms. She may well retire there when Charles dies.
But it would be very surprising if William V did not give her a very large grace-and-favor house if Charles predeceases her. they seem to get along fine, and Kate is said to be very cloxe to her. More important, it would look awful if she were the first dowager queen in modern times not to be given a grand house by the Crown. Queen Adelaide had multiple houses after William IV died, including Marlborough House, Bushy House, and several others. Alexandra also was given Marlborough House, and allowed to keep Sandringham until she died. Mary also had Marlborough house and was also allowed to live in Badminton House. And the Queen Mother was given Clarence House and Royal Lodge, and she also owned and refurbished the Castle of Tey.
Camilla will likely be allowed a large crown-owned London house (like Clarence House) and given a crown-owned country house should Charles die before her.

R48 Queen Mary lived in Badminton as a guest during WW2 as her niece was chatelaine of the House, being married to the Duke of Beaufort. She apparently arrived with 78 staff and the Duke and Duchess were reduced to living in two rooms while Aunt May and the retinue took over the rest, which I think was rather fabulously Queeny.
The late Queen Mother’s house in the far north of Scotland is Castle of Mey, not Tey. I’m not sure if she left it to Charles or if it’s part of the Duchy of Cornwall in which case it’s now William’s.
Wherever Camilla ends up I’m sure that she’ll be happy with a roof over her head, an ottoman for putting her feet up, an open fire for the dogs and a G&T in one hand and a fag in the other, and good for her!

R44, prior to their marriages, both Alexandra and the daughter of Fat Mary were Royal Princesses of the blood.

Wrong as usual, R50 - Queen Mary, as the grand daughter of a morganatic marriage, was born a Serene Highness, not Royal.

I insist that Camilla must be called The Dowager Queen...or perhaps the Dowager Duchess of Cornwall, which is what she should have been called all along.

It was Elizabeth herself who designated that Camilla become known as Queen (without the Consort) when she herself died.
Re Queen Mother, it’s ALWAYS used for the prior Queen (if living) when a son or daughter ascends the throne. Queen Mother Elizabeth would have been called that even if her daughter had a different name. Queen Mother Mary was the title of Bertie’s Mother when her husband died and Bertie’s wife came Queen. However, Mary outlived Bertie (King George the 6th), and I’m not sure what happened when the new queen’s mum had to become Queen Mother Elizabeth.

Wrong on pretty much everything, R53. There was no “Queen Mother Mary”. She was “The Queen” until her husband died when she was titled “Queen Mary”.
Her daughter in law was “The Queen” until her husband died, after which she was formally known as “Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother”, only to avoid confusion with her daughter, also called Elizabeth. “Queen Mother” was not “ALWAYS used for the prior Queen”.
In the Royal household, Queen Elizabeth II was always known as “The Queen” while her mother was always known as “Queen Elizabeth”.
Don’t make stuff up, you only make yourself look stupid.

[quote]Queen Mary, as the grand daughter of a morganatic marriage, was born a Serene Highness, not Royal.
Well, considering that Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco, gave birth to a Prince and Princesses, she met the "blood Royalty" standard that Fat Mary passed. Her daughter was a Princess of the Blood. Victoria would have approved. Drina's mother would have also approved a marriage to a German Princess no matter how minor.
Bottom line, Former Queen Camilla will be fucked.

No, R56, you’re wrong again. There are more non-royal princes and princesses than there are royal ones. Just being a prince doesn’t make someone a royal prince.
Albert II, Prince of Monaco has been known to correct interviewers who refer to the “Royal family of Monaco” with “Princely family, not royal”.
