"The Brady Bunch" meets "The Wizard of Oz" meets the song "Car Wash"

This is definitely the trippiest thing I've seen lately. From the Brady Bunch Variety Hour.

Marcia as Dorothy, Greg as the Scarecrow, Peter as the Tin Man, and guest Rip Taylor as the Lion. The Sid & Marty Krofft Dancers as bubbles and brushes. And Alice as the Wicked Witch, except for some unfathomable reason she is dressed more as Witchypoo.

No one can sing.

Maureen McCormack was a good singer as a teenager, but she was doing drugs during this period, and so her voice here is terrible.

Barry Knight was actually a wonderful singer by this point in his life, but this song is not suited to his skills at all.

Christopher Knight never could sing.

by Anonymousreply 1May 31, 2023 5:40 PM

*Sorry, I meant Barry Williams, not Barry Knight.

by Anonymousreply 2May 31, 2023 5:42 PM

I watched an episode of BB the other day on Pluto. They were performing as a family pop group wearing matching blue and white outfits. They kept singing a stupid song about taking their father’s Model T out for cruise. I thought WTF?! This shit is old. Way too old to watch now. I turned that shit off fast.

by Anonymousreply 3May 31, 2023 5:59 PM

I love this too OP. Also in addition to not really singing, no one can really move. That choreography is something you'd teach dancers with any training in less than 15 minutes, and they'd have it.

More questions than answers: Did they just run out of ideas? Were the writers high? Were the costumes left over from something else and used in an effort to save money? It's the intersection of the two disparate pieces of material (TWOO and "Car Wash") that fascinates me. Who decided these were two great tastes that taste great together?

by Anonymousreply 4May 31, 2023 6:16 PM

[quote] Were the writers high?

The recordings we have of most 70s variety shows - and the whole Sid and Marty Krofft genre - are a testimony of how high the writers and performers were. On some shows you can almost see the cocaine sheen on set or smell it through the screen.

by Anonymousreply 5May 31, 2023 6:19 PM

[quote]Were the writers high?

You have to ask?

Just take a look at the screen.

by Anonymousreply 6May 31, 2023 6:41 PM

I feel like Peter Knight could have sang better if he had lessons and got more self-confidence. He always sounded like he was holding back and doing the talk-singing thing as he was too embarrassed to actually sing.

I also always thought Maureen had a lovely tone to her voice.

by Anonymousreply 7May 31, 2023 6:47 PM

If you look carefully, you'll see Patty Simcox from Grease in there as "Water".

by Anonymousreply 8May 31, 2023 7:10 PM

R8- Do you think the Lion Qween blew the Brady boys to completion?

by Anonymousreply 9May 31, 2023 7:40 PM

That's super trippy.

If I'd been high watching that in the 1970s, I'd have sworn the pot was laced with acid.

by Anonymousreply 10May 31, 2023 7:46 PM

There’s SO much to unpack in that clip but my first question is: Why is McCormick pronouncing Toto so weird? Toe-Toe

by Anonymousreply 11May 31, 2023 8:13 PM

[quote] They kept singing a stupid song about taking their father’s Model T out for cruise.

You misheard. They sing about taking out "a stick-shift model TA," which is the stick-shift model of a TransAm.

It has nothing to do with a Model T, and they never say it's their father's (you're just interpolating that).

by Anonymousreply 12May 31, 2023 8:17 PM

Wow r12 has a BB degree

by Anonymousreply 13May 31, 2023 8:20 PM

It’s such old shit

by Anonymousreply 14May 31, 2023 8:21 PM

Chris Knight got more sexy and hunky once he hit his 20s, 30s, 40s and even 50s. He should have done gay porn. He would have been a hit.

by Anonymousreply 15May 31, 2023 8:25 PM

All those costumes the backup dancers are wearing would look great at the grand opening of my tacky new car wash.

by Anonymousreply 16May 31, 2023 8:27 PM

[quote] Wow r12 has a BB degree

You're bitter because I pointed out you were wrong about the Model T.

by Anonymousreply 17May 31, 2023 8:55 PM

Greg and Peter molested my Kitty Karry-all right out on the front lawn!

by Anonymousreply 18May 31, 2023 9:04 PM

R17 I’m stunned you’re a BB oracle

by Anonymousreply 19May 31, 2023 9:41 PM

That is really fucked up!

by Anonymousreply 20June 1, 2023 3:00 AM

No, R3, R13,R19.......you totally mis-heard the lyrics, and someone called you on it. Stop being a little twat.

by Anonymousreply 21June 1, 2023 7:21 AM

R3 I think your confusing them with Jackie & Clancy.

Greg really thought he was getting a Tony, huh.

by Anonymousreply 24June 1, 2023 8:24 AM

I'm stoned at the moment, and that video seems like the most hilarious thing I've ever watched.

by Anonymousreply 25June 1, 2023 8:37 AM

Eve Plumb made the right choice in saying “no” to being part of this confusing and embarrassing mess.

by Anonymousreply 26June 1, 2023 8:58 AM

Can we sing the song about dad and model's g spot?

by Anonymousreply 27June 1, 2023 11:21 AM

[quote] Why is McCormick pronouncing Toto so weird? Toe-Toe

Maureen McCormack pronounced many things hilariously oddly--she had been to a actors' diction coach who taught her these very strange ways to say things. The most famous word she pronounced oddly on the show was "school," and Christine Taylor reproduced it in the two BB movies by always pronouncing it as "skyuul" (see link).

I read a very funny interview with Taylor once and she said that all you have to do is watch the old episodes and you'll see Marcia pronounces many things pretentiously--she pointed out in one episode, where the kids decide they want to pull a prank on Alice by frightening her with a ghost, McCormack pronounces the word "werewolves" as "wurr-wolves." I went back and saw the episode, and sure enough, she does.

Maureen's diction wasn't as pretentious as Linda's from Seattle.

The general public would have been repulsed if they had known how gay this is. It's like 70s audiences had no gaydar whatsoever.

Whatchu talkin' 'bout, R30?

Marcia pronounced "get" as "git."

by Anonymousreply 32June 8, 2023 3:23 PM

It's amazing that this show premiered over 50 years ago and people today are trolling an actress who was a teenager at the time about how she pronounces words!

by Anonymousreply 33June 8, 2023 3:32 PM

"trolling"

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

R32, when Marcia got her braces and had her nervous breakdown, she also added an extra syllable to the word “ugly.”

“I’m Ugh-gul-ly! UGH-GUL-LY!!!!”

by Anonymousreply 36June 8, 2023 7:23 PM

I feel deep shame for all who participated in this dreck.

by Anonymousreply 37June 8, 2023 11:24 PM

R37=Joyce Bulifant, thinking she's taking the high road...

by Anonymousreply 38June 9, 2023 12:47 AM

R17, R21 The correct lyric is “Makeshift Model TA”. It refers to a Hotrod.

It has nothing to do with the Trans Am styling /performance package of the Pontiac Firebird. And no one has ever referred to the Trans Am as a “TA”

In the Motortrend article below you can read how the cheap and ubiquitous Model T Ford was used as the basis for Hotrods. And take note of this section: “Total Performance in Wallingford, Connecticut, launched their Model T rod kits in 1971, offering 1923-27 roadster and roadster pickup truck bodies. They even came out with a Pro Street T kit featuring a 1927 Model T body with Model A fenders and a serious performance-minded chassis.”

The reason the car in “Keep On” is “makeshift” is because it combines parts of the Model T and the Model A making it a… Model TA.

by Anonymousreply 40June 16, 2023 3:42 AM

Did people think Greg was attractive? He always looked way too old to be in high school. I wouldn't mind if I thought he was handsome, but he's not. His hair was a part of it, but so were his eyes.

by Anonymousreply 41June 16, 2023 4:50 AM

Where the hell is Toto in the "Car Wash" number? They couldn't persuade Susan Olsen or Mike Lookinland to put on a canine costume and join in the merriment?
