“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold,” Alastair James, the airline’s load control improvement specialist said in a statement.
New Zealand airline to weigh passengers before they board the airplane

Fat whores: PANIC!

Anyone else anxiously awaiting the disrespectin video when some fatass BAPs go visit and are asked to step on the scales?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 30, 2023 7:37 PM |
If they suggest I fly freight, I WILL ask to speak to the manager.

Which one of you Kiwi Dataloungers thought of this idea?

I guess the plus sized model is cancelling her New Zealand trip
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 30, 2023 7:46 PM |
r4 New Zealand has been waging war on fat whores for a while now, I recall discussing that on DL several times over the years. So this new development isn't at all surprising to me.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 30, 2023 7:46 PM |
Sooner or later the passenger weight profiles from the 1970s are just not going to be close enough and a passenger flight is going to come down shortly after take off due to weight and balance issues. And when that happens, all the shit they shoved in the overhead bin is going to come crashing down on their heads. Then they'll die.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 30, 2023 7:48 PM |
Never going to New Zealand.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 30, 2023 7:49 PM |
I lived in Dunedin and flew around a lot to the smaller towns on the South and lower North Islands. Those turboprop planes flying over the southern Alps with major turbulence need to know how much weight they're carrying. But this is likely going to rile up the Maori.

"No flight for you fatty, get out of line!"
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 30, 2023 7:57 PM |
They'll still let the fatties fly, they will just charge them more and make them purchase an extra seat.
And, they are weighing everyone, not just the ones who look a certain way. It's for safety reasons. If you don't care about safety, swim to your destination 🦈🦈🦈
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 30, 2023 8:06 PM |
Is this because they're trying to underfuel the aircraft, only put in enough fuel to get the exact weight to the destination? If so - what could go wrong with giving the pilots no margin of error!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 30, 2023 8:09 PM |
I had a flight that was going over the Rockies. There were about 6 of us left to board, and I didn't get chosen. They said there were weight restrictions going over the mountains....seemed odd as I am tall and lean. Stuck at DIA for another 10 hours trying to get on stand-by.

Kiwi weigh in.

Wrong, r11. It's a voluntary survey. Anyone can decline. OP's article is truncated.
[quote]"It's simple, it's voluntary, and by weighing in, you'll be helping us to fly you safely and efficiently, every time," he added. According to the press release, the survey is set to take place from May 29 to July 2. Passengers will be asked to volunteer to step on the scales only on select Air New Zealand flights departing from Auckland International Airport.

This has been covered on Australian TV. R15 is right: it's not a precursor to charging fat people more money. It's part of a regular survey they do on the relative weight of everything that goes into the aircraft so they can ensure the right fuel loads etc. Everyone knows the population of the Western world is getting fatter, so I'd be more worried about airlines that DIDN'T do this. The last thing you want is for your flight to be fuelled on the premise that the passengers weigh what they did in the 1960s.
Nobody but the survey people see the weight the machine registers, not even the person on the check desk.

Every airline should do this! Fewer fatties.

R9 how come?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 31, 2023 9:51 AM |
R7, this has happened already a few times in the past few decades, always in the US, with small commuter planes which have a very small tolerance to overloading. This is why now many airlines that operate those planes weigh all passengers before boarding.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 31, 2023 10:08 AM |
I've been on very small planes (6 passengers or less) where they weigh everyone beforehand and actually tell you where you can sit, to ensure the aircraft is balanced.
These are usually joy flights, and the scenery has to be extremely spectacular and the weather very fine to make me risk a flight with such a fine balance between joy and disaster.

Isn't that how I perished?

I wonder what the cut off is? The average weight of a NFL player is about 245lbs by the way, so this may not just affect 'fat whores'.

[quote]‘We’re paying twice for the same experience’: Plus-size travelers hit out at ‘discriminatory’ airline seat policies
Only if the "same experience" you're having is having a gigantic sweaty fat person who is sitting in the seat next to you blubbing on top of you and squeezing you into even less space than the already small seats provide.
