I’m thinking of getting a signet ring

My college coat of arms, but not the name of the school.

Is that tacky?

by Anonymousreply 77June 5, 2023 1:41 AM

Why?

by Anonymousreply 1May 29, 2023 10:10 PM

Wearing a signet ring is a centuries-old tradition and is seen as a symbol of status and family lineage. The ring typically bears the family's crest or coat of arms, which is used to authenticate documents or seals. Signet rings are often worn on the little finger of the right hand.

by Anonymousreply 2May 29, 2023 10:11 PM

Yes

by Anonymousreply 3May 29, 2023 10:11 PM

Spend your money on something else.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2023 10:11 PM

It is vulgar to purchase a signet ring. If you do not have one that has passed through your family, you have no reason to "get" one, Phonita.

by Anonymousreply 5May 29, 2023 10:13 PM

I prefer my initials rather than a crest of any kind.

by Anonymousreply 6May 29, 2023 10:14 PM

It sounds kinda social climbing.

by Anonymousreply 7May 29, 2023 10:16 PM

Tacky is as tacky does…

by Anonymousreply 8May 29, 2023 10:18 PM

You could buy me several new pairs of sneakers instead. How can you be so selfish?

by Anonymousreply 9May 29, 2023 10:18 PM

What is signet ring?

by Anonymousreply 10May 29, 2023 10:19 PM

Why not just get the Barnabas Collins black onyx oval cabochon in a gold setting.

Cane with silver wolf-head optional.

by Anonymousreply 11May 29, 2023 10:19 PM

as long as it matches your pirate earring and blouse.

by Anonymousreply 12May 29, 2023 10:23 PM

Tough crowd.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2023 10:27 PM

A coat of arms sounds scratchy

heheheh

Get a vintage one at least.

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2023 10:39 PM

Aren’t you afraid you’ll catch your ring on a hook of some kind and end up ripping off your finger?

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2023 10:39 PM

Is it a storied institution and you’re hoping to attract alum?

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2023 10:40 PM

Here is the original covfefe signet ring

The ring is from Farmington …you know, Miss Porter’s School

by Anonymousreply 18May 29, 2023 10:51 PM

Let it go, hun. No one cares.

by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2023 10:52 PM

OP, do you have Bill Clinton fingers (i.e., long and elegant) or Stumpy Trumpy fingers? Worse yet, are your fingers sausages, like King Chuck's?

If you have Clinton fingers, my vote is go for it. Otherwise, invest in a good dividend stock.

Just don't ever use the word, "classy"!

by Anonymousreply 20May 30, 2023 2:26 AM

This seems about your taste level, OP.

by Anonymousreply 21May 30, 2023 2:33 AM

A tiara would make more of a powerful statement, OP.

by Anonymousreply 22May 30, 2023 2:38 AM

I found some weird signet rings when I Googled "signet ring." There's even one on Amazon that says "Keep Fucking" on the band. I'm not joking. This one has a diamond in a dick and balls shape.

r23, meet r21!

by Anonymousreply 24May 30, 2023 2:41 AM

R22 - Nuts, I was going to make a monocle joke and you (sort of) beat me to it.

by Anonymousreply 25May 30, 2023 2:43 AM

What next, OP...bells on your toes?

by Anonymousreply 26May 30, 2023 2:51 AM

Buy a Persian cat and you can be a Bond villain.

by Anonymousreply 27May 30, 2023 2:58 AM

R27 - Hey, Blofeld was a passenger on a cruise (tiny ship) that I was on back in the day. His wife was ditzy. Bizarre to hear the voice that said "You only live twice, 007" say "I hope my credit card works!".

by Anonymousreply 28May 30, 2023 3:06 AM

I think the only people who can wear one is graduates from MIT. I have no idea why I find that acceptable, but anyone else I think is just social climbing and tacky. (if you were thinking of wearing an earcuff and you are over 19 years old I also say no).

by Anonymousreply 29May 30, 2023 3:11 AM

My college ring is a signet ring. I still wear it. It's the only acceptable jewelry on a man - in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 30May 30, 2023 3:14 AM

After I heard about Jimmy Fallon's ring tragedy I would be scared to wear a ring.

by Anonymousreply 31May 30, 2023 3:17 AM

[quote] My college ring is a signet ring. I still wear it. It's the only acceptable jewelry on a man - in my opinion.

I'll get rid of my watch, then.

by Anonymousreply 32May 30, 2023 3:21 AM

A watch doesn't count, R32.

by Anonymousreply 33May 30, 2023 3:35 AM

College ring as the only acceptable jewelry? I don't think so.

I actually like jewelry on a man, sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 34May 30, 2023 3:35 AM

So long as you use it with the proper wax to seal your mailed past due creditcard payments ; “The time has come, the Walrus said, to speak of many things: of shoes and ships and SEALING WAX and cabbages and kings, and if the sea is boiling hot and whether pigs have wings…” So…follow your heart, sezs I…

by Anonymousreply 35May 30, 2023 3:40 AM

You'll also need to stock up candles, OP. How else will you seal all of those envelopes?

by Anonymousreply 36May 30, 2023 3:58 AM

I think a ring with a young swan on it is a marvellous idea, OP.

by Anonymousreply 37May 30, 2023 4:52 AM

The only ring you need at your age, OP.

Keep it up as well as you can.

by Anonymousreply 39May 30, 2023 12:15 PM

As tacky as fly paper. NOKD.

by Anonymousreply 40May 30, 2023 12:17 PM

SUNY Brockport has a coat of arms?

by Anonymousreply 41May 30, 2023 12:18 PM

R41 - Jeffrey Dahmer had a coat made from arms, does that count?

by Anonymousreply 42May 30, 2023 1:55 PM

When I got my master's degree, I got a signet ring in white gold for my class ring. I also wore it on my right pinky. It's too small for me now and has been for years, but recently I've been thinking of getting it enlarged and wearing it again. I liked it and I'm used to wearing a ring on that finger.

Then again, I'm a lesbian, so YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 51May 30, 2023 4:00 PM

the ring posted at r23 just screams class

by Anonymousreply 52May 30, 2023 4:01 PM

A signet ring is pretty ridiculous to me because no one has really used sealing wax in well over a century. King Charles III is the only person I can think of who has a reason to wear one.

by Anonymousreply 53May 30, 2023 4:08 PM

One of this sort, especially for an art historian, an archaeologist, or an historian gets a pass from me. Bonus points for Ancient Roman.

[quote]I'm thinking of getting a signet ring.

Why? What inadequacies do you imagine it will address?

by Anonymousreply 56May 30, 2023 9:42 PM

I want to mark my commitment to TRUTH in this age of lies. My college motto is Veritas which is truth in Latin . A ring that has the motto, but not the name of the school, is not meant to impress anyone. It is for me.

by Anonymousreply 57May 30, 2023 9:48 PM

You really think people are going to get all of that from a gaudy pinky rink? Okay!

You do you, hon.

by Anonymousreply 58May 30, 2023 10:00 PM

It’s not for “people.”

by Anonymousreply 59May 30, 2023 10:02 PM

Pinky rings are weird. Even on King Charles--it looks weird.

Your ring finger is called a ringer finger for a reason. But if you're going to get a ring, why your alma mater? Get something simple and classic for your ring finger that will last. Wearing a ring with a college slogan into your 30s, 40s, 50 and beyond is just odd. If you want to remember your college, make a donation of some sort.

by Anonymousreply 60May 30, 2023 10:06 PM

[quote]It's not for "people."

Are you sure about that? Why are you asking for people's opinions?

by Anonymousreply 61May 30, 2023 10:18 PM

R60, he doesn't want "simple and classic." He wants the world to know that he's all about "Truth." But also it's not for "people." So he wants the world to know he's all about "Truth" but not "people."

The ring is for him. Not you. But it's also for the world, but not for "people."

Very "truthy."

by Anonymousreply 62May 30, 2023 10:20 PM

R2 reads like AI wrote it.

by Anonymousreply 63May 30, 2023 10:21 PM

R50. Greg did not graduate from Harvard…we would have been informed of that in so many threads, were it true.

by Anonymousreply 64May 30, 2023 10:26 PM

Get a simple wedding band, you will get more attention. Are you married...to a WOMAN?????

by Anonymousreply 65May 30, 2023 10:28 PM

I do care if people think any signet ring is tacky. However, the meaning of the ring I have in mind is personal. Sorry if this apparent contradiction triggers anyone.

by Anonymousreply 66May 30, 2023 10:30 PM

I'm thinking of getting some rhinestone barrettes

My mother's maiden name initial, but not the name of her school. Because I'm wearing longer bangs now and pigtails.

Is that tacky?

by Anonymousreply 67May 30, 2023 10:34 PM

[quote] Greg did not graduate from Harvard…we would have been informed of that in so many threads, were it true.

Not true, R64. One never says that one went to Harvard College. It’s embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 68May 30, 2023 10:36 PM

R67, tacky is as tacky does.

by Anonymousreply 69May 30, 2023 10:58 PM

Since I became a volunteer for my fraternity when I turned 40, I have come to the conclusion the alumni brothers who wear our large fraternity ring are uniformly gay. I don't volunteer to take advantage of close contact with the undergrads, none of them do either. We really want to make sure our chapters are living up to the fraternities' values and responsibilities, as outlined in the mid 1800s when they were first established.

Still, I know a gay man when I see one.

by Anonymousreply 70May 30, 2023 11:03 PM

Get a medal on a chain to wear around your neck. Not a pinky ring--not a good look.

by Anonymousreply 71May 30, 2023 11:06 PM

OP, in all seriousness, if you wear one, you will be roundly mocked.

by Anonymousreply 72May 30, 2023 11:11 PM

Note to self : watch out for signet rings i.e. cocksucker insignatia.

by Anonymousreply 73May 30, 2023 11:20 PM

I suppose if you were on a SuperBowl team and got a ring, you can wear that.

by Anonymousreply 74May 31, 2023 12:47 AM

R57 rather than a signet ring I vote for a tattoo with veritas. (and I don't have any tattoos but it would be way classier than a signet ring). Get one on the inside of your wrist, or hell, have it tattoo'd over your finger like a ring.

by Anonymousreply 75June 1, 2023 10:31 PM

Harvard can’t handle Truth—especially if it is about Harvard.

by Anonymousreply 76June 1, 2023 11:22 PM

OP, I've been mulling over your signet ring dilemma in earnest throughout the weekend. I respect you for having the wisdom to ask the tastemeisters of DL what you should do. I confess that I've considered getting one of these little buddies myself but concluded I would look like a Pippa Middleton wannabe, which would be worse than death. Also, my fingers are fat.

Have you decided yet what you're going to do? In case you're still in limbo, the linked article might help resolve your doubts one way or the other....
