Botched NYC butt lift left Texas man infected and depressed, suit claims

What a pain in the rear!

A Houston man claims an Upper East Side plastic surgeon botched his butt implant, sending him to the intensive care unit, according to a lawsuit.

Lewis Scott Brogan, 54, says his pre-procedure lab results showed he was in moderate kidney failure, but Park Avenue doc Douglas Steinbrech plowed ahead with the 11-hour procedure at Gotham Plastic Surgery on the Upper East Side while failing to insert a catheter, Brogan alleged in Manhattan Supreme Court papers.

Without the catheter, the physician couldn’t monitor Brogan’s “fluid intake and output,” and left the Texas entertainment executive with “significant” cardiac and pulmonary problems, until he was rushed to the ICU at Weill Cornell Medical Center from the December 2021 procedure.

Brogan claimed he was discharged from a seven-day hospital stay at Weill Cornell in “ongoing excruciating pain” from his implant and had a high white blood cell count, which indicated infection, according to the legal filing against Steinbrech, Gotham Plastic Surgery, Weill Cornell and others.

There were a few issues we believe that were departures from the standard of care,” said Brogan’s attorney, Gerald Grunsfeld. “It’s like one mistake compounding on each other.”

Brogan had sought out the surgery as a way to lift his spirits after an horrendous attack in his own home months earlier which left him “disfigured,” Grunsfeld said.

The implant had to be removed and Brogan said in the legal filing he was left with “severe depression and financial ruin.”

Dumb and Dumberer.

by Anonymousreply 8May 28, 2023 4:18 PM

So he's had all four of his lips tampered with, and all for procedures appear to be botched.

An 11 hour butt lift???

What in the silicone implant hell?

by Anonymousreply 11May 28, 2023 4:30 PM

That's an old photo of the doctor. This is more updated. He is polished and handsome and looks like he knows his way around a man's butt.

That's a rough 54.

At least he got the attention he so desperately wanted.

by Anonymousreply 13May 28, 2023 4:32 PM

I went to this doctor! For my first time ever getting undereye fillers, a few years back. He and his staff were great. Wonder if this was just an inevitable outlier.

by Anonymousreply 14May 28, 2023 4:32 PM

How does one end up in kidney failure (albeit moderate) at only 54? Maybe VoiceoftheNight can explain.

by Anonymousreply 15May 28, 2023 4:33 PM

We have real MDs on Datalounge, let’s not page VOTN.

by Anonymousreply 16May 28, 2023 4:41 PM

R11 Obviously the doctor butt-fucked him a number of times during surgery.

by Anonymousreply 17May 28, 2023 4:44 PM

His facial plastic surgery is horrifying. Why do people want to do that to themselves? They don't look like young people when they get it; they look like older people desperately trying to look like young people.

by Anonymousreply 18May 28, 2023 4:50 PM

At some point you have to choose between your ass and your face.

by Anonymousreply 19May 28, 2023 4:55 PM

He's practically embalmed at this point.

by Anonymousreply 21May 28, 2023 5:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 23May 28, 2023 5:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 24May 28, 2023 5:14 PM

Have it all done. Honey, take my word. Grab a cab, c'mon. See the wizard on Park and Seventy-Third!

by Anonymousreply 25May 28, 2023 5:16 PM

Did this asshole (literally!) read the disclosures that you have to sign before any medical procedure? My gastroenterologist left me alone with the disclosure form to sign, and out of boredom I read the entire form and possible side effects included everything from colonic perforation to death, and I was signing away the doctor's responsibility. I somehow doubt that this plastic surgeon just willy-nilly operates on wealthy Upper East Siders without some sort of disclosure and waiver in place.

But good luck to the buffoon who has obviously undergone botched plastic surgery procedures at least a couple of times. I wonder how his attorneys will keep his face out of sight of the jury? Will the judge have to instruct the jury to disregard the drooping face, crooked nose and hair plugs?

by Anonymousreply 26May 28, 2023 5:16 PM

But I HATE dong squats and legs at the gym. I want a perky butt NOW!

by Anonymousreply 27May 28, 2023 5:21 PM

The patient sort of resembles a wax museum version of Daniel Craig. After its air conditioning failed, in a heat wave.

by Anonymousreply 28May 28, 2023 5:22 PM

R16, R15 here. Are you referring to VOTN's being a D.O.? (I think he's a D.O., anyway.) You understand that D.O.s go through almost the identical training and licensing as M.D.s, right? Any difference in D.O. MCAT scores and undergraduate GPAs is negligible. It's like comparing someone with a tested IQ of 155 to someone with an I.Q. of 160. At that level, who the fuck cares?

Okay, I'm now awaiting the jokes about my shitty IQ.......

by Anonymousreply 29May 28, 2023 5:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 36May 28, 2023 6:31 PM

It’s does look like a hard 54. But if he was a victim of a home invasion maybe that’s the reason why he looks like it, so perhaps we should bite our tongues and be nice. He’s likely a datalounger.

by Anonymousreply 37May 28, 2023 6:34 PM

Erm, I don’t think the two halves of his face were fitted back together properly.

by Anonymousreply 38May 28, 2023 6:53 PM

The Patient Has Two Faces.

by Anonymousreply 39May 28, 2023 6:53 PM

R26, a patient can still sue for gross negligence even after signing any variety of waiver. (If successful, a gross-negligence suit would negate the original contractual terms.) That said, the bar for proving gross negligence is considerable – I doubt a forgotten catheter would suffice to establish it – but the hospital's medmal unit will probably settle the claim for a nominal amount.

R15, as someone who unfortunately has a close family member with a failed kidney due to a botched operation, the problem – in a nutshell – is that the guy couldn't pee for 11 hours, given his (alleged) lack of a catheter. Since he would've also been on a saline drip in the OR, I'm pretty sure the problem is simply that he was so backed up with urine for nearly a half-day that it proved deleterious to at least one of his kidneys. (They're more sensitive than many realize.)

Btw I know DLers have wildly unrealistic opinions about male beauty from chronic porn consumption, but this guy is in no way hideous, despite the botched facial work (the worst part being the eyes, now at slanted angles which can't be fixed). He's also not a "rough" 54.

by Anonymousreply 40May 28, 2023 6:53 PM

I can’t understand the appeal of implants or foreign matter in your body. I’d be so concerned for inflammation around the area and the potential for your body to form tissue surrounding the implant.

It must feel freaky to detect the boundary of an implant, and even worse, deal with any form of trauma near an implant.

I’d stay away from anything like this except possibly reconstructive surgery if a dog or monkey bit off part of my face.

by Anonymousreply 42May 28, 2023 7:04 PM

It is always so sad to see these guys destroy their natural aging looks by trying to look 25 again. He was not a bad looking guy (you can google him) but the facial work did him no favors. I am 63 and have accepted the fact I am not 25 or 35 anymore, the best I can hope for is to look good for my age.

by Anonymousreply 43May 28, 2023 7:24 PM

Agreed, R41.

I am hypersensitive to so many things (when I was little, Mother used to call me "The Princess and the Pea" [obvs she knew some things about me]). I will scar from a fucking ant bite, and also tend to keloid.

I had an emergency 3-level anterior cervical disc fusion in 2011, and am grateful I had an extraordinarily gifted neurosurgeon, because 99% of people, including doctors, cannot detect the scar on my throat. I would NEVER take that level of risk for an elective, vanity procedure.

Still, I feel for the dude.

Maybe this guy just has bad luck....

All those resources will soon be available to victims like Scott Brogan, who said he was a victim of a violent crime three weeks ago in his own home. The suspect, he said, was a complete stranger.

"In 71 minutes, a total stranger broke into my home and tried to murder me with a lawnmower blade and a metal walking stick," Brogan said. "For people like me, we need to have guidance. Being victim doesn't come with a manual."

by Anonymousreply 53May 28, 2023 8:12 PM

God I'd hate to be a plastic surgeon. All those years of training and the expense of medical school to cut up on neurotics and live perpetual fear of lawsuits and unhappy outcomes. OTOH the ocular plastic surgeon who botoxes me a few times a year is one of the most jubilant guys I know.

He should have gone to Venezuela. Take a look at Miss Venezuela contestants; they all look so much alike after the surgery, which is paid for by the pageant. Their faces are gorgeous, and if there was a butt lift anywhere among them, you really couldn't tell. They're taught hold to walk and to pose, which is identically.

Here is the 1994 pageant. The swimsuit competition, where you see all contestants compete, is 53 minutes in. Each contestant gets a well-known Venezuelan designer to design her personal gown. Everyone in the country watches it year to year. The pageant can last three to four hours, but no one complains.

by Anonymousreply 109May 29, 2023 6:28 PM

Lucky he didn't go to Mexico.

US health bosses are calling for a deadly fungal outbreak linked to cut-price plastic surgeries in Mexico to be declared an international health emergency.

So far, two Texan patients have died from the fungal brain infection, which doctors believe was contracted from unsterilized equipment south of the border after they had the discounted plastic surgeries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the condition of 195 more people who were given epidural anesthesia (injection into the spine to numb part of the body) during plastic surgeries carried out since January.

But hundreds more may have been affected due to Mexico's booming medical tourism industry, which sees around 1.2million Americans travel south for affordable care each year, and an even greater number of international patients.

The CDC and its equivalent in Mexico have asked the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare the situation a health emergency, which could see the global agency deploy resources to track and isolate cases, quarantine contacts and screen passengers at the border.
