My understanding is that people in the UK can freely move within the borders of the Union, just as someone from Boston in the US can move to Georgia, where the natives speak with a different accent. Edinburgh is a beautiful historic city if pictures don't lie, and I imagine that it is a desirable place to live if you can tolerate the cold and the damp. It's not particularly rainy (27 inches/year), which is much lower than many other places in Scotland. I don't think it's a place you'd go to work on your tan, hence his very white skin. It sounds as though he lived with or was kept by a wealthy bf there for a bit, and stayed when the relationship ended. It probably has limited work opportunities compared to some other places, such as London.

Some southerners are derided because their speech is sprinkled with non-standard grammar and mispronunciations. But there are southerners who are admired for their colorful and musical accents. I'm linking Ann Richards as one of many such examples. And DLers are great admirers of some of the accents in Designing Women. But certainly some do get ridiculed.

R107 He's definitely an odd character, but at the same time I find him quite fascinating. For example, how much of his persona is fake? He clearly lives in the flat in his videos and deliberately chooses decor that gives an air of being in a National Trust mansion.

He seems to live as he *thinks* upper middle class people do - mostly to get and grow an audience for YouTube revenue. A recent example was a video where he was enjoying a cream tea in the grounds of a posh hotel. The comments on his video show he's getting it right in their eyes. (I think a lot of his viewers are older American women who think all 'British' people live like that, so it's a bit of escapism for them.)

But, like many online persons that are dropped the second the cameras go off, I think Nicolas carries on living as a character. I wonder what his family think when he goes back to visit them.
