Inside 'terrifying' Sam Smith gig blackout - confusion, crying singer and Madonna cameo
Confusion surrounds Sam Smith's brief performance in Manchester on Wednesday night, after the Gloria hitmaker cut short their gig after just four songs and cancelled even more dates the following morning
Sam Smith's gig in Manchester ended abruptly on Wednesday night, leaving fans confused, angry and worried about the award-winning singer.
The Oscar award-winning singer, 31, cancelled further gigs on Thursday morning, explaining doctors have advised them to rest their vocal cords amid fears over permanent damage to their voice.
Sam has offered refunds to present to watch their brief stint on stage at Manchester's AO Arena, with the option also available for those with tickets to postponed dates in Birmingham and Glasgow to get their money back too.
While many have been sharing their concerns for Sam's mental health amid the drama, others have been recalling the 'terrifying' experience on Wednesday night online.
One concert goer took to social media to slam Sam for leaving the stage so suddenly - claiming she was left anxious and scared in the dark with her 13-year-old daughter, not knowing what was going on.
Just hours before teasing Madonna would be joining them at the AO Arena, Unholy singer Sam left the stage after performing just four songs for an excited crowd, with it claimed one of their backup singer had been spotted crying while performing.

That was very unprofessional of him, he could've quickly told the audience what was going on before leaving. Maybe he has anxiety and had a panic attack. He needs to take an extended break.

In contrast, singer Chalino Sanchez got a death notice while on stage, but he kept performing like nothing happened. Even more impressive: it was a notice of HIS death. His bullet-ridden corpse was found in an irrigation canal the next day.

I don't hate them as much as others here, but it does seem like they're rather self-destructive and the future is not looking bright. The singing alone has a shelf life given how much contortion is done to keep up that falsetto/upper register. Everything will be downkeyed in 5-10 years tops.

It turns out Lana Del Rey was told her uncle had died right before she was due to perform for the prince of Monaco. She basically gave herself “two seconds to cry” and went on with the show. The show must go on.

The truth is, most of us are supportive of anyone, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, pronouns, weight, skin color or form of self-expression. As long as someone is humble, hardworking, stable, mature and hold themselves accountable for their own lives, we DL-ers and the public at large tend to quickly rise past any preconceptions or biases to extend respect and validation to that person. A good'un is a good'un and the world tends to value, support and reward the virtuous, regardless of the package such a person comes in.
See Dame Edna. See Tina Turner. See Michael J Fox. See Ru Paul. See Stephen Hawking. See Peter Dinklage.
It's the whining. It's the drama. It's the attention-seeking, the instability, the petulance. It's the fragility. It's the victimhood. It's the lack of stamina and that unreliability that makes DLers and the public at large turn on a person.

R43 I tend to agree. DL has always been bitchy, but a lot of the comments against Smith are usually aimed at who they are rather than their behaviour. Like you say, the general chatter draws parallels with the way gay people were commonly talked about in days gone by.
I'm not surprised you've got some defensive replies. People don't tend to like it when their narrow mindedness is pointed out, though it's perhaps more positive that they do seemingly care how they come across.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 26, 2023 3:28 PM

[quote]a lot of the comments against Smith are usually aimed at who they are rather than their behaviour.
The problem is that Sam Smith, and so many others, think "who they are" serves as an all-purpose excuse to get away with this behavior. One might even (cynically) think that they've been so vocal about their identity precisely in order to gain sympathy so they can get away with this behavior.

I do believe that Sam Smith is a gay man with an effeminate streak. And when his mental health is stable, it shows up as a bit of flair in his styling. He may throw in a bit of genderbent glam but he looks healthy. See image below.
What we have been seeing this past year however, folks, is an example of unchecked mental illness. To celebrate or defend Sam Smiths poor mental health is to reduce Sam Smith to an object of consumption, a virtue signal, a prop that we can co-opt and wield to bolster our own political or social agendas.
The man's not well. He's being exploited for profit by people in suits that don't care if he lives or dies as long as the money keeps rolling in. In fact, dying is fine if it means a boost album sales.
See below what a healthy Sam Smith looks like.
