The whole time I was in the Army, I worried because I never ran into a situation where the world required salvation, and I knew I wouldn't have a gnarly war story to lay on some fat nellie on datalounge later in life.

I used to work for the Army. Any stories that would fall under 'MERICA WOO' were usually told by the wives.

I have respect for people who have done military service, but I grow weary of those who constantly claim "I served my country" as if no one outside of the military has ever done anything for their country.

A lot of them do think they—and only they— know what’s best for the world. Yet so many of them just stumbled into the military as a career. Not sure how someone with no life plan somehow knows what’s good for everyone else.

I know quite a few military people, and luckily none have once shared anything about saving the world, etc. Maybe you hang around douchebags? Or met one person, and now that has turned into your current story?

Yeah me and my commanding officer were once stuck in a fox hole. I thought "Gee I might die at any moment". I also noticed how hot it was.

My CO was suffering in the heat too - but I noticed a swelling in his pants.

No one has invade this continent because it's surrounded by huge oceans, making it extra difficult to maintain a war. As for Russia, It chose a perceived weak neighbor that used to be part of the USSR and has many Russians living there. This way Putin can claim the Russians want Russian rule. NATO would still be NATO even if the US military was half the size.

My brother was in the military. Only recently, I found out that he worked in the Pentagon, which I think is cool. Lots of my extended family members were in the military. All men, except one young woman. (She has a college degree, so she'll be an officer.) Nobody in my family has bragged about what they did in the military.

I 've worked with the military on and off for the past 12 years and none were braggarts. The only person who ever bragged was a guy I dated who had a Bronze Star and would act faux-humble about it but would continue the conversation at length when anyone asked about it.

No, in fact most of the military people I've met are very low key and matter of fact about it, even ones who saw combat. They rarely speak of it. The ones who brag are probably full of shit.
