by Anonymousreply 3May 19, 2023 4:23 AM

Good move. They are a tacky group that intentionally offends the sacred religious beliefs of a large group of people. No sports team should be endorsing religious bigotry

by Anonymousreply 4May 19, 2023 4:25 AM

R2, what are you yapping about? You think it’s smart of a baseball team to put on an act that mocks 72% of the country? Should they have the Proud Boys on too?

So are you one of the idiots who run this place, posting shitty takes just to gin up responses, or what? I can't figure out how someone like you ends up on Datalounge unless you've got some kind of fucked-up agenda.

OP is the kind of person who thinks 72% of the country is Catholic.

Why were they ever hosting a group that mocks a religious group? Most of their players and fans are Catholic

Oh, OP is also the guy having a meltdown because the Catholic school shooter's manifesto isn't going to be released. In THAT thread he's basically saying "fuck the Catholic school, I want the manifesto," but in THIS thread it's "fuck drag queens, they're offending Catholics."

OP thinks drag queens are "trannys" by the way and is regularly homophobic. Just read this ugly motherfucker's other posts, you'll see what I'm talking about.

by Anonymousreply 14May 19, 2023 4:33 AM

What bullshit, their religious groups more than mock gay people, they chastise us all the time. Are they going to stop having Christian evens because some people are offended by them?

by Anonymousreply 15May 19, 2023 4:33 AM

R4, offended "Christians" can go fuck right off!

by Anonymousreply 27May 19, 2023 4:47 AM

For me, the irony in this decision by the Dodgers is that the organized Catholic Church, with its legions of abusive priests (most of whom commit abuse with impunity), does way more to defame Catholicism than the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence could ever do.

by Anonymousreply 28May 19, 2023 4:48 AM

The problem isn’t drag queens. The problem is anti-religious drag queens mocking another religion.

Inclusion = inclusion.

Inclusion is about accepting anyone despite their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, weight.

Inclusion isn’t celebrating sexual identity while bashing religion.

That’s not inclusion.

by Anonymousreply 45May 19, 2023 5:38 AM

Well they've done a lot of great charitable work, I've never really cared for them. I'm no fan of the Catholic Church but I don't think it's cool to mock nuns like that. Sure there are worse things. But I just find them kind of tragic

by Anonymousreply 46May 19, 2023 5:38 AM

The irony of the whole situation is that the "inclusion" event want's to exclude people they don't like.

by Anonymousreply 47May 19, 2023 5:45 AM

I kind of think the Perpetual Indulgence sisters are hilarious. But why would a baseball game be a good venue for them? Baseball is pretty boring.

They don't offend me, but baseball + comic drag sacrilege does seem an odd combination.

BTW, nuns are not only Catholic. The Anglican church, Eastern Orthodox and Lutheran churches have nuns. Buddhism has nuns. Jainism has nuns. Is there a Church of Perpetual Indulgence?

by Anonymousreply 48May 19, 2023 5:51 AM

This is the problem with corporatizing Pride. The businesses end up calling the shots and the meaning of pride celebration gets lost. The whole point of a company is to make money, so they make decisions not because they love and understand us, but because they think they'll get cash out of the deal. I understand why they hesitated to include the sisters. LA has a pretty large Hispanic population and a bunch of Dodgers fans are Hispanic, Catholic, and lean socially conservative. I think certain companies saw what happened with Bud Light, and they're going to start being more hesitant about showing support.

by Anonymousreply 49May 19, 2023 5:56 AM

I'm so glad to see that baseball is so concerned with the religion and cultures of others 🙄

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 50May 19, 2023 6:04 AM

Double edge sward though. In the early days of gay pride, NO company would come within a mile of sponsoring anything to do with the parade. Doing so meant they backed gay rights. Now we have all these companies that just do it for the money, which was still the original motivation but they turn on us whenever the wind blows another direction.

by Anonymousreply 51May 19, 2023 6:05 AM

[quote] Well they've done a lot of great charitable work

They probably do more charitable work than most so-called "Christians."

by Anonymousreply 52May 19, 2023 6:07 AM

Why are the Los Angeles Dodgers organising Pride events? Doesn't Pride belong to the gays anymore?

by Anonymousreply 53May 19, 2023 6:08 AM

R53, why are you so surprised? Have you never heard of sports teams organizing pride nights before?

by Anonymousreply 54May 19, 2023 6:11 AM

I have read that some (the ones who aren't useless religious freaks, and who have a sense of humor) are aware of the charitable work that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do, and actually get a kick out of them and (tacitly) support their efforts. Many actual Catholic nuns are stealth lesbians and atheists, and even socialists. The plainclothes ones (not the holy roller Filipina/Indian ones who still wear the habit) are down in the trenches, providing reproductive health to women, care to refugees and the homeless, as well as housing and school to poor children. Many are secret radicals actively working on the downlow against official Church policy on certain issues. As so many women have known throughout history, when men run the show, continue doing whatever it is you want, just keep it hidden, and let the men think they're in charge, lol.

Oh - and fuck the Catholic Church. In this day and age, I cannot believe anyone with an ounce of morality takes those fucking child rapist pedos and hypocritical closet queens seriously. How dare the Sisters (who actively do good, and merely point out the Church's hypocrisy) be thrown out and have their award rescinded. The Dodgers should be ashamed. We're sooooo enlightened in 2023, in this corporate, theocratic hellscape of a country.

by Anonymousreply 55May 19, 2023 6:12 AM

BREAKING: Dodger pride night is only for the butch gays, not drag gays.

by Anonymousreply 56May 19, 2023 6:18 AM

So easy to take the piss out of nuns. Any chance of ridiculing a religion other than Christianity? Say, Muslims? How brave those trannies are. They'd fucking love to have a real vagina and wear a nun's habit.

Freaks on the left, freaks on the right.

R54, I'm from the UK so it's a little unusual for me for non-gay organisations to have Pride events to this extent, but when basically straight organisations (whose interest in Pride is completely different from what Pride is about for gay people) start holding Pride events then of course such events are going to be some bullshit nonsense.

The gays need to make Pride our own again.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are an institution, and they're satire. Their inclusion does not mean that other religions are excluded from the event. Churches and religious groups are ALWAYS at L.A. Pride and have been for many years.

Anyone who is trying to say that the Dodgers are supposed to ban the Sisters because they're a bigoted organization is a liar. Maybe they're just trolling because they want attention, maybe they genuinely are some far-right evangelical nutjob who has taken up residence here, but either way, they are lying to you.

Good decision. Period. Obviously the Christian haters know nothing about business. Are the nuns funny? Of course they are. But, can the Dodgers afford to have them at a game? No, purely a business decision.

by Anonymousreply 81May 19, 2023 12:04 PM

Funny how everybody on DL who rail against trans and drag queens all of a sudden are outraged that a baseball organization doesn't want to have them as part of their event and risk serious repercussions to their business.

by Anonymousreply 82May 19, 2023 12:06 PM

I’m Catholic and I love the Sisters, who, by the way, predate the trans panic by many decades. You guys are going on like they are Satanists when they are really just a raunchier version of the Sister Mary Ignatiuses and Sister Michaels who are beloved by the more liberal members of the Faith. They do a lot of good, too.

by Anonymousreply 83May 19, 2023 12:08 PM

Fuck those sports team pride events! Seriously fuck off!

by Anonymousreply 84May 19, 2023 12:09 PM

The Dodgers just need to find some drag queens who aren’t raunchy and who don’t mock religion. Then they can check that box and everyone can be happy again.

by Anonymousreply 85May 19, 2023 12:11 PM

The Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Joe Hollendoner put out a statement in support of the Sisters, blaming “out-of-state, right-wing fundamentalists” for “perpetuating a false narrative about LGBTQ+ people.”

“We call on the Dodgers to reconsider their decision, honor the Sisters, and bring the true spirit of Pride back to Dodgers Stadium,” Hollendoner wrote. “If the decision is not reversed, we strongly encourage the Dodgers to cancel Pride Night. Any organization that turns its back on LGBTQ+ people at this damning and dangerous inflection point in our nation’s history should not be hoisting a rainbow flag or hosting a ‘Pride Night.’”

The Sisters also received support from Northern California. State Sen. 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒕 𝑾𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓, a San Francisco Democrat and member of the Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, criticized the Dodgers for backing down and included a subtle dig at the San Francisco Giants’ rivals.

“Really sad to see the Dodgers cave to pressure & kick drag queens out of a Pride celebration,” he wrote on Twitter. “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do amazing, life-saving work in the community. We expect more from our sports teams — even the Dodgers.”

It just goes to show you that there is no real outrage about offending Christians. They have to make up numbers.

I’m thinking that real, authentic Christians make up about 5% of the country. Or less. Let’s get real here.

by Anonymousreply 90May 19, 2023 1:25 PM

R53 Gays haven't been a consideration in Pride for at least 5 years now. We are scum and an inconvenience to the TQ+ agenda.

by Anonymousreply 91May 19, 2023 1:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 92May 19, 2023 1:53 PM

R83, you’re Catholic but you think it’s okay to mix raunchiness and sacrilege with your religious faith? I know some liberal Catholics, but none of them would think it’s okay to do that. Just because you’re a nominal Catholic that doesn’t take their faith seriously doesn’t mean other Catholics and Christians are likewise. Moreover, businesses don’t have to associate with an entity that degrades or trivializes the faith of hundreds of millions of people. It’s bad branding

by Anonymousreply 93May 19, 2023 1:59 PM

The gay community really is asking for a backlash if it is putting its neck on the Line for a bunch of vulgar men who mock Christianity.

by Anonymousreply 96May 19, 2023 2:04 PM

I agree R93 but at some point back in the day the very gay populated Catholic parish in the Castro had them over for something. It is hard to even imagine those days now but Tales of the City described a world that sorta existed. Cowardly cunts. If you really want to make a statement, prance around in drag in a traditional hijab yelling "ALLAH AKBAR!" Put on traditional Orthodox Jewish clothes, wear great big Star of David necklaces, and jump around screaming, "OY VEY! I'M LATE TO TEMPLE!"

I'm an atheist and I believe in free speech, so I don't have a problem with mocking religions, although it seems like a poor business practice to tell Catholics to fuck off, but hey, their stadium, their rules.

Maybe because he was Protestant, or maybe because that was a completely different world.

R102, I would argue that most of the SOPI members are old enough to remember when Cardinal O’Connor was campaigning against safe sex education and was the face of HIV prevention.

While the majority of Catholics now may be tacit supporters of gay people, many of us remember when they weren’t and one could point to the persistent intransigence of the Holy See when it comes to true support and acceptance in today’s world.

Christians have no leg to stand on talking about bigotry, or anything else for that matter.

Besides, which Christians are really offended here except the fundamentalists? And who gives a shit about them?

I doubt 80% of the self-identified "Christians" in this country would know the difference between Communion and a beer on Sunday. They've surely not seen the inside of a church since their weddings to 12 year olds.

[quote]LA Pride just announced they are pulling out of the pride night in support of the Sisters. Others will also fallow.

As my grandmother used to say, "Communists don't believe in God."

“Others will also fallow“

Oh, DEAR!

Official statement for you, R120z

Including people who are mocking/sexualizing a major religion in the name of "pride" is just a stupid business decision, regardless of your disdain for the religion/institution. Dumb battle to be fighting. The same people up in arms over the disinvitation would be going ballistic if this were a group of drag queens dressed as Muhammed.

by Anonymousreply 124May 20, 2023 4:06 PM

Precisely. There is a destructive subset of people in the gay community who wanna engage in the most vulgar and disrespectful behavior toward other groups without any consideration for how the backlash could destroy all the gains of the community

by Anonymousreply 125May 20, 2023 4:41 PM

Has Anita Bryant joined the thread? The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have been around for more than 40 years, during which support for gay rights has only gone up; and it was their kind of in-your-face activity that gained all our rights in the first place, not the buttoned-down types like the Mattachine Society that preceded Stonewall. I wouldn't worry so much about backlash from groups that wouldn't support us anyway.

The Dodgers are a mainstream business, not some left wing activist organization. They seek to appeal to the broadest fanbase, to Middle America. They can’t afford to Alienate or offend an entire group of people.

by Anonymousreply 127May 20, 2023 6:47 PM

[quote] They seek to appeal to the broadest fanbase, to Middle America.

The Dodgers need to appeal to LA and LA fans only -- not the same "Middle America" that has been intent on hating their very wrong and stupid idea of LA.

by Anonymousreply 128May 20, 2023 6:57 PM

Last I checked L.A. is still in California, and Middle America still despises California with the heat of a thousand suns.

by Anonymousreply 129May 20, 2023 6:59 PM

They need to appeal to Southern California baseball fans, which includes devout Catholics, Latinos, and older Americans

by Anonymousreply 130May 20, 2023 6:59 PM

R129, don't tell that to R128.

The Dodgers are Middle America's team, dammit! 🇺🇸 🇺🇲

by Anonymousreply 131May 20, 2023 7:00 PM

[quote] devout Catholics, L

Who exactly are these devout, pious Catholics dressed in mantillas and praying rosaries at Dodger Stadium.

Give me a fucking break.

by Anonymousreply 132May 20, 2023 7:03 PM

Speaking of geography, R101 raises a good point - why is did the Dodgers, and not the Giants, invite them in the first place? Do the Giants host a similar event, and will the Sisters be invited to that?

by Anonymousreply 133May 20, 2023 7:06 PM

Over 43% of Dodgers fans are Latin, and the team has a growing international fan base

why did*

by Anonymousreply 135May 20, 2023 7:07 PM

Bump

by Anonymousreply 136May 20, 2023 10:58 PM

Dodgers apologize and re-invite the Sisters. I guess Middle America and the Latin Catholic fans will have to figure out a way to cope.

Poor Little Marco, what's he going to say now?

by Anonymousreply 141May 23, 2023 12:34 PM

Something stupid r141.

by Anonymousreply 142May 23, 2023 12:36 PM

I hate that there are people on this forum caving to the religious bigots. I doubt these posters are gay.

by Anonymousreply 143May 23, 2023 12:38 PM

We have evangelical Jesus-freaks running around among us, R143.

by Anonymousreply 144May 23, 2023 12:41 PM

It’s disrespectful to Catholics. Good job Dodgers.

by Anonymousreply 145May 23, 2023 12:43 PM

If you are so insecure in your religion that you can't manage to see the humor in the SOPI, then too bad. They have been around for decades and, frankly, the Catholic church, as a major proponent of anti-gay legislation TO THIS DAY, deserves the disrespect and mocking from the gay community. SOPI is a gay institution and the only reason that they were dis-invited is because they trigger the anti-trans loons, not because they are critical of the Catholic church. I'm Jewish and I haven't noticed people laying off the Jews in parody or comedy. Mel Brooks has made a career of it. While the First Amendment does not apply to private corporations, like the Dodgers, cancelling these kinds of shows because people might get offended inevitably degrades our First Amendment rights.

R30 The responses to that Twitter link have taken an ugly life of its own. For example:

The entire vibe and city of Los Angeles is 'disrespectful' to Catholic/Christianity/whatever. Welcome to the real Sin City.

by Anonymousreply 154June 17, 2023 3:59 AM

R153 Probably to participate in those sexual orgies. I hope she used condoms and is on antibiotics.

They look demonic actually. Scary to children
