This reminds me of a few weeks ago, when I traveled to Coney Island. I was sitting down at an outdoor table, eating my hot-dog, when a man sat on the bench across from me. She's sad to me. Britney was hyped up all her life and lacked the skills, brains and talent to cope and survive as a "nobody." She was cute and charming and marketable for corporations. She was the perfect package to sell Europop, lite R&B and EDM to a white American audience. But she was never educated, smart or musically gifted or an excellent dancer. She had heavy investment and a big corporate push to make her happen. It's funny with all the "industry plant" accusations of Billie, Cardi and Ice Spice, nobody looks at Britney with her Disney and NSYNC/Backstreet Boys ties (who were already popular in Europe and The US had her open for them) as a prototype for that. Britney added a heavy sexuality to bubblegum teen pop too which further convinced the industry all you needed was softcore porn to make a big star. Teen pop stars back in the day were mostly innocent and suggestive at best while Britney was heavily sexualized. Britney only knows being sexy and shaking her butt and twirling around. She's just a product of her environment.

She's bitter and angry because she knows she's mediocre in every way and that's why she compares herself to or drags down every other female pop star or celebrity. Love them or hate them, Christina and Beyonce have more talent and it pisses her off they still have massive fanbases while she's stuck on Instagram embarrassing herself. I moderately disagree. She was slowly put back together through the work. And it's not like she didn't get self-esteem from that, in addition to money. At the start she couldn't do much dancing and had two people flanking her for every little move. But she slowly built up functioning. I watched the whole process of getting her into that Vegas residency. She rehearsed and then did that show, regularly. A full time job. She got more and more functional. She also managed a season on X factor without a complete freakout. The vegas residency grossed 137 million. I think she was able to find the stability that led her to fight to exit the conservatorship. That's my take and I'm sticking to it. I think she needs structure and it's obvious now, post conservatorship, she has no structure, and she is spiralling.

R103 I think the conservatorship was needed at first because she was completely out of control and was going to end up dead or in prison. Many in her circle admitted it saved her life. Her career and her finances were basically at rock bottom (her managers were robbing her blind, Blackout was a flop and that 2007 VMA performance got her so much flack) until that conservatorship. Now I definitely think once she got back to business with that Vegas residency and tour and getting radio hits and that perfume endorsement, her fortune skyrocketed and corrupt handlers started exploiting her and funneling money from her with aging father being too stupid to see it. I can see her likely growing more and more defiant over time due to her mental illness resurfacing (bipolar or schizoaffective is difficult to treat) and eventually getting tired of being under restrictions thus acting out again. Once Sam got into the picture, he enabled her to go force with ending the conservatorship. Its rumored Sam was the leader of #FreeBritney by posting online and acting as a whistleblower. This is one situation where I can see both sides, her family and management were overstepping boundaries (even with a mental illness, Britney has rights) and Britney's mental state becoming too erratic to control. She needed a new party to overlook her conservatorship (not her family but people should could trust) rather than it terminated altogether. She is in a very vulnerable position now with no allies and she alienated what she had previously.

Before she was famous and was still just doing state fairs and stuff, some of Lynn’s friends had to do an intervention to tell her that she was overworking her daughter. Lynn was oblivious. Back in the day people in the industry would say Britney lacked real talent but she did work very hard. That was like the only thing people could praise her for. The relentless work.

You're right Justin was a condescending douchebag. Christina also tried to fake that she liked Britney though you could tell she was resentful. It wasn't necessarily jealousy but being pressured to copy Britney by execs and then having to be compared to her all the time drove her insane.

Her childish behavior is not entirely blamed on bipolar disorder (though it magnified it). But more on the fact she wasn't raised normally, sheltered, always depended on others, uneducated and thus lacks common sense and life skills. Many mentally ill people do make decisions, work, go to school, live alone, have kids and maintain jobs though it's very hard for them and they don't have nearly the same amount of money and protection that Britney Spears has. Many have succeeded in life with the right treatment but the biggest factor is their willingness to cooperate.

I think the only reason the conservatorship was a thing was because her meltdown, had two small kids and she was blowing through her money. She doesn't appear that disconnected from reality but very immature, impulsive and wants to just do whatever she feels. If she didn't have that fortune, that conservatorship would have never happened. She would have lost custody and probably ended up dead or in jail.

Apparently they tried to give her R&B songs and she sucked at singing them. So switched to a Euro dance pop with heavy beats and backup vocals and found it easier on the ears. Christina who was going to do R&B had to change to dance-pop afterward because of Britney's success.

R135, it blows my mind she tried to sing " I Have Nothing". Just....wtf? Singers better than her don't even bother singing Whtiney or Mariah songs because they know they can't handle them. Clearly, mama Spears convinced her that she could do whatever she wanted.

Her early singing voice was deep. Not a great singer but that voice could have been trained into something. Her Star Search performance was pretty good but too nasally and shaky, she needed more training. Most people can learn to sing if they want to. Now the issue was if she didn't adopt that fake baby voice to sell her "naughty but good schoolgirl" (barf) image, her major career would have never happened. Because her regular voice was mediocre and not marketable. Her looks were her selling point. So her fans are wrong to say "Jive ruined her" because she'd have no career otherwise.

She sounds decent here. Like I said her hillbilly ass should have sung country. I've said the same thing with Miley.

I don't really get though is how is she "Princess of Pop." Her career is sorta like Paula Abdul, Ciara or J Lo except she lasted a long time. Made catchy dance music for the radio and focused on performances (though Paula, Ciara and J Lo are way better dancers on their worst days). Sorry stans, Blackout was very much a vapid commercial radio album part of the dub and EDM wave and she didn't have much input in it. Not that there's anything bad about making fun music that but she never had control of her music and used it express anything of depth like Madonna, Janet, Taylor Swift, Beyonce or Gaga have. Sonically I find Kylie Minogue and Rihanna make more interesting and innovative party music.

Britney really didn't last that long. Her populairty really spanned about 12 years or so. That's good but that's nothing compared to Mariah or Madonna.

It's unfair to me that J Lo gets so much hate for relying on overpowering backup vocals to create an illusion of singing yet Britney did this since the beginning of her career till now. They're not the only ones. But Britney does get a lot of defense. People bash Beyoncé for lip syncing a few times yet she sings live most of the time. Britney stopped singing live pretty early on and lip synced far more. Britney doesn't really dance to justify lipping like she does. Mariah likely damaged her voice and is too proud, so lip syncs but she could sing her ass off in her prime. People are forgiving or her because she proved her talent. I feel Britney actually was never judged as harshly as other women in the industry.

The Star Search audience always applauded the little kids on that show for being loud. They equated that with belting.
