When was the last time you went to a movie theater?

Well?

by Anonymousreply 25May 20, 2023 5:34 PM

I was raised in LA. It’s all about the movies. I have a degree in Film/TV. I have an AMC pass for up to three movies per week. I see at least one every week. I almost lost my mind during Covid. Obviously there’s no one at home to fuck me.

West Side Story the first weekend it was out

The only time I go the movie theater is if it has higher end amenities. Reserved comfort seating, cocktails served at my seat with bar food. Sometimes that helps weed out the riff-raff when you pay more. But not always. More often we watch at home. We have better audio and video and more comfortable seating and better food/drinks anyway. In my youth, I was at the movies every week. Loved it. Gave us to place to be away from our houses and parents.

I think the last movie I went to was Flight. A date. Not sure what year that was.

I avoid crowds as a general rule.

Haven't been to one in years, before Covid. I have a 60 inch 4K tv. I'm good.

For years it had been an increasingly bad experience; overpriced tickets, overpriced concessions, bad staff, dirty theaters, obnoxious patrons. Don't miss it one bit.

R1 sounds exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 6May 19, 2023 4:02 AM

R4 We we’re the same in our younger years. Now we stay home and watch.

by Anonymousreply 7May 19, 2023 4:05 AM

R1 — did getting an MFA in film help you on your career path? Imo, it’s nothing to boast about.

by Anonymousreply 8May 19, 2023 4:09 AM

2009 to see the first Sherlock Homes film starring Robert Downey, Jr. It was mediocre and most of what I remember is how annoying everyone's cell phone screens were. I did not bother with the sequel.

by Anonymousreply 9May 19, 2023 4:09 AM

Maybe 2 decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2023 4:15 AM

We've been twice in the last two weeks to see the new Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick movies. We had fun both times.

by Anonymousreply 11May 19, 2023 4:19 AM

My partner and I have the AMC A List subscription so we go to the cinema at least once a week, sometimes more if there are multiple movies out that we want to see. We saw Master Gardener tonight.

by Anonymousreply 12May 19, 2023 4:49 AM

I saw "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" tonight.

by Anonymousreply 13May 19, 2023 5:05 AM

Sunday. Saw John Wick at the Grove

by Anonymousreply 14May 19, 2023 7:05 AM

The last time I went to a theatre to watch a movie was to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016. It wasn't the best experience because of the out of control behavior of the other people in the audience.

I seriously have no plans to ever visit a movie theatre again. They are all closing up because no-one goes anymore. I have an amazing entertainment set up at home and I'd rather wait to see something in my own home. In another decade or so, movie theatres will go the way of drive-in movie theatres. Gone.

by Anonymousreply 15May 19, 2023 7:37 AM

R8 No. After working on one movie, I realized I did not have the personality for the film business. I ended up in a completely different career which suited me better and taught me more than I ever learned in college (I got a BA). I don’t boast about it, I hardly think of it at this age, but I’m proud of the accomplishment.

[quote] [R1] sounds exhausting.

R6 is absolutely right. Hence, no man in my bed.

by Anonymousreply 16May 19, 2023 7:39 AM

I saw the Australian film Of an Age and the restored director's cut of The Doom Generation that same week.

by Anonymousreply 17May 19, 2023 9:34 AM

The only time I view a film in the cinema is during the local annual international film festival. Films and TV series I stream online from free streaming sites.

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2023 9:40 AM

Whenever the last John Wick movie was released; I took the day off, went to see it and had a great lunch at Ruby Tuesdays.

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2023 9:59 AM

Once, a year ago. Otherwise, not in the last 4 years.

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2023 10:28 AM

For many years, I’d go the the cinema at least once a week, and as recently as 2013, I made sure to see every best picture Oscar nominee. Then, cinema distraction became too much for me especially phone lights and texting. I left too many films feeling the experience was ruined by other people given the price point. I went less and less, and it’s been 3 or 4 years since the last one. I’d now only go to a cinema with stadium incline seating and those big chairs to insulate myself from the distractions. The audience at one time enhanced the experience…until it didn’t.

by Anonymousreply 21May 19, 2023 10:46 AM

I go regularly. I have been fortunate to not have it ruined by others too often. When the Chris Nolan Batman movies came out it was loads of fun. The audience enhanced the experience, everyone was so excited and cheering. I recall seeing The Matrix on the big screen and it was phenomenal.

A few years ago they had Terminator 2 on the big screen and cleaned up the special effects. I have seen it at home of course but in the theatre was really something.

I saw John Wick 4 recently with a friend I hadnt seen since covid. It was really nice to catch up. We plan on seeing Oppenheimer next.

by Anonymousreply 22May 19, 2023 1:12 PM

My enjoyment depends on the time of the showing and neighborhood the theater is in. Because theater management has never found a way to control rowdy patrons and cell phone usage, they will all be gone soon. Rather than cause an incident, theater management usually chooses to ignore a situation until it has ruined everyone's experience. Fuck em. I'll stay home with my sippypoos.

by Anonymousreply 23May 19, 2023 2:46 PM

I saw at least two movies virtually every week from the late 80s to the late 2010s, then I slowly tapered off to one or two a month by the time covid hit. The prices, the unruly audiences, the lack of diversity in subject matter, the disappearance of 10am local matinees -- my preferred time -- all contributed to my waning enthusiasm.

The last movies I saw in the theater were West Side Story and In the Heights, in 2021. So far, there's nothing this summer to draw me back.

by Anonymousreply 24May 19, 2023 4:37 PM

I went to see Knives Out and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood a few years ago. Before that, it was probably American Beauty.
