No one cared that Krystle was the 'outcast' entering the family, or that her past boyfriend was her husband's enemy. They wanted a villain (and Pamela Sue Martin wasn't cutting it). So along came Joan Collins...

DALLAS worked because the focus was on the family drama, and the nasty JR Ewing. They knew a villain would attract an audience.

The first season of Dynasty is not good. The plays like the first season of Knots or Dallas where even the characters seem to be moving through all their scenes with the feeling that something is missing. I think the problem is Linda Evans. Angie Dickinson was the first choice for the role, but turned it down. I think it would've worked with someone like that in the role.

Joan does her best acting on Dynasty in season nine. With Stephanie Beacham instead of Linda Evans she finally has something to play against. Though they're remember as campy fun most of the Alexis / Krystle scenes after disappointing. Linda doesn't give Joan anything to play against and so she sometimes doesn't even seem to bother.

Dominique was such a problematic character. She was a Diana Ross level superstar and multi-millionaire yet just happened to hang around in La Mirage for years? She was so successful yet was demanded constant validation from Blake? She was so strong and independent yet once she arrived in Denver she never seemed to do anything other than write Blake blank cheques to "save my company, dammit!"? Tragic. Her first scene with Alexis was fun, but it was never explained *why* she disliked Alexis so it seemed it was purely because Blake did, making her the character seem pathetic, the opposite of how she should've been.

Kate O'Mara was a nice addition, but the whole show already felt too crowded by that point and so she was quickly let go, which was a shame. She and Joan remained friends till her death though.

But not the sweet kind, as Joan was stepping into another Joan's high heels, as Crawford's comeback classic role as husband-stealer Crystal Allen! 1956's "The Opposite Sex" was a semi-musical remake of '39's "The Women." Collins looks young & fab amidst a cast of veteran stars, but the movie is mild camp at best.

Dame Collins is one of the last of the studio system stars and I, for one, am glad to see a public figure who prefers to make an appearance in fine clothes and jewelry rather than shredded jeans and tragic hairstyles.

She saw that up close with Linda Evans. Evans is of Swedish descent but was a big sun-worshipper in Southern California, so much so that by the time Dynasty began she looked like two rather than one decade had passed since The Big Valley; and Joan, despite being a decade older, actually looked younger than her.

Linda was cute looking when young, but by the time Dynasty came around she looked like a totally different person.

I love that she still has a zest for life. She gets up and dresses up and gives us all old school glamour...Happy Birthday Dame Joan. (Met her once, about 6 years ago....kind of a cautious woman...Once she was reassured I was OK she warmed up...i think once she knew i was gay lol...but she has never pretended to be Mary Poppins...and shes always been more real than all those media trained modern 'stars' who give banal interviews.....So my opinion was she's an authentic Star...a real broad.
