Did Anyone Prefer Christine McVie to Stevie Nicks in Fleetwood Mac?

Out of the two female leads, I always loved Christine more. I know Stevie has her fans, but there was just something special about Christine. Am I alone here?

I didn’t care for her voice, so no. I’ve said this before, but she sounded like the female version of Michael McDonald.

Her personality seemed good though.

I liked her better than Stevie.

Little Lies, Everywhere... FM's best.

by Anonymousreply 2May 18, 2023 10:25 AM

Not alone OP

She didn't have stage presence, but she seemed content to let Stevie get the lion's share of publicity. I think Christine liked writing songs more than performing them.

She also seemed to do her best to distance herself from all the personal Fleetwood Mac drama. She never commented on it, never publicly bitched about the other band members, and for that, I give her respect.

by Anonymousreply 4May 18, 2023 10:28 AM

I am with you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5May 18, 2023 10:42 AM

In Fleetwood Mac, no. That band was lightning in a bottle, perfect synergy. They somehow pulled the best lyrics and music out of each other despite the personal drama.

But when considering the solo work of the members, I like Stevie’s most of all.

(I know there’s an oh dear in here somewhere, but fuck it, it’s early.)

I think she was a better songwriter than Stevie.

I first heard Fleetwood Mac in the early 70s when the AOR radio station I listened to started playing one of their songs. I really liked the song (which wasn’t hard rock at all) and eventually bought the album it was on. I was surprised to discover it was sung by a woman.

I think she and Nicks are so different I couldn’t choose between them. I couldn’t imagine them singing each other’s songs. Could you?

Great comparison R1. Her voice was rather bland, whereas Stevie had a very unique sound that carried her songs well and told more of a story.

"Got a Hold on Me" was a solo Top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Christine McVie in 1984.

That's a hard call. I love both of their voices, as different as they are. I liked Stevie's songs better, generally speaking, although Christine had lots of great ones. I definitely liked Stevie's voice better overall, now that I really think about it.

Christine who? Oh, the chick that played the keyboard way off on the side? What about her?

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2023 11:08 AM

Over My Head is one of my favorite FM songs. I love Christine's voice.

by Anonymousreply 13May 18, 2023 11:19 AM

Christine wrote some cute and catchy songs but she was a very bland singer. Her voice was pleasant but had very little aesthetic character. It's not hard to see why Stevie was far more popular, she just has way more charisma both as a singer (her voice has a very unique and immediately recognizable aesthetic quality) and performer. Stevie Nicks was also very very attractive and Christine was a busted up dog.

by Anonymousreply 14May 18, 2023 11:27 AM

I like them both much more than any of the men in that group.

by Anonymousreply 15May 18, 2023 11:33 AM

Hi Stevie/r14!

by Anonymousreply 16May 18, 2023 11:49 AM

Why do women who get a lot of plastic surgery end up with those large, heavy jaws? Do they choose that or does it just happen?

by Anonymousreply 17May 18, 2023 12:14 PM

Unlike Stevie, Christine never got fat, so #TeamChris

by Anonymousreply 18May 18, 2023 12:24 PM

R5 Such an underrated song.

by Anonymousreply 19May 18, 2023 12:27 PM

I like Stevie's better, because I like unique voices, especially with a bit of that raspy quality. I love Christine's voice, also, it's just not very unique.

by Anonymousreply 20May 18, 2023 12:31 PM

I'm a big Christine fan, especially from her days with Chicken Shack.

I never cared for Stevie Nicks 'adnoidal' coke-fueled voice and her witchy image is downright silly. Though, I could definitely understand why the American version of Fleetwood Mac hit it big with Stevie and Lindsay, lots of pop music fans are more into the image of a musician rather than the actual music they are making. Their romance etc was great fodder for their fans.

I actually preferred the Peter Green original British version of Fleetwood Mac. At least Peter did make some money from Santana's version of his song, Black Magic Woman.

by Anonymousreply 21May 18, 2023 12:41 PM

Not to derail this thread, but Otis Spann's The Biggest Thing Since Colossus is one of my favorite albums r21

I was never at all into Stevie‘s image – just a unique voice and songs – I can still like Christine a lot – I don’t need to disparage her or the others in order to like her.

by Anonymousreply 23May 18, 2023 4:57 PM

Christine wrote "Don't Stop" and that's about that.

by Anonymousreply 24May 18, 2023 6:26 PM

I like Christine because she didn't bring all the drama. Stevie's relationships, abortion, etc. make her a mess.

by Anonymousreply 25May 18, 2023 6:30 PM

Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan.

by Anonymousreply 26May 18, 2023 7:10 PM

@r25, But all the Fleetwood Mac drama is what helped sell millions of records. Would Taylor Swift sell as many records if it wasn't for all the drama?

by Anonymousreply 27May 18, 2023 7:19 PM

R27 You are totally right, but I can't stand taylor swift either.

by Anonymousreply 28May 18, 2023 7:44 PM

She didn't have the presence of Stevie, but still, it wouldn't have been Fleetwood Mac with her, her husband John Mcvie, Lindsay and Mick. A great band. I'm listening to Gold Dust Woman right now.

by Anonymousreply 29May 18, 2023 8:05 PM

I cannot abide Stevie's voice, therefore, yes, I much prefer Christine. 'You Make Lovin Fun' and 'Songbird' have always been my favorite Fleetwood Mac song and while Christine's vocals might not be as distinctive as some others, they worked very well within the context of the band.

by Anonymousreply 30May 18, 2023 8:13 PM

They all worked well together, well, at least to the outside world that's why they were so successful. Christine and Mick always seemed ok not being the stars

by Anonymousreply 31May 18, 2023 8:24 PM

R25 I never paid attention to that aspect, although I was certainly aware of it. I enjoyed the music without needing to think of that!

by Anonymousreply 32May 18, 2023 8:34 PM

^ That's just it, nobody paid any attention to poor Christine ☹️
