My mom was extremely intelligent (she was valedictorian at a huge high school), but she never got the chance to go to college, raising the four of us. My mother's coffee was 1/2 coffee, 1/4 sugar, 1/4 evaporated milk. I tasted this swill one time, and as a result, didn't drink coffee until I was 25 and someone introduced me to drinking it black and buying it at McNulty's.

My mom loved Steely Dan and Virginia Slims and sometimes Benson and Hedges. She liked Margaritas and her favorite foods were Oysters and Lobster. Her favorite movies were Bonnie and Clyde and a movie called Buster and Billie, starring Jan Michael Vincent ( not a well known movie now, but worth seeing if you can find it). She loved Christmas, and it was the only time of year that she was actually happy.

My mother once told me her favorite type of day: A rainy day, a cup of tea and an old B&W British mystery on the tv.

My mother liked it when people complimented her cheesecake and potato salad, both of which were very well regarded.

She liked it even more when people asked her for the recipes. She would reply that she was taking that to the grave with her. And she was a woman of her word.
