My Dad was a proper boy scout Dudley Do-Right who never swore...except for maybe two occasions when he became so angry he used the word 'fuck'. I never saw my mom so happy as on those occasions.
She also loved to feel his crotch whenever they left a dark movie theatre so she could see his beet-red face when they entered the bright lobby

My mom was extremely intelligent (she was valedictorian at a huge high school), but she never got the chance to go to college, raising the four of us. She liked to read newspapers and magazines and clip out anything interesting and then file it by subject in her big filing cabinet. So she always had her own early version of the internet around to look up things.

My mother's coffee was 1/2 coffee, 1/4 sugar, 1/4 evaporated milk. I tasted this swill one time, and as a result, didn't drink coffee until I was 25 and someone introduced me to drinking it black and buying it at McNulty's.

My mom loved Steely Dan and Virginia Slims and sometimes Benson and Hedges. She liked Margaritas and her favorite foods were Oysters and Lobster. Her favorite movies were Bonnie and Clyde and a movie called Buster and Billie, starring Jan Michael Vincent ( not a well known movie now, but worth seeing if you can find it). She loved Christmas, and it was the only time of year that she was actually happy.

My mother liked it when people complimented her cheesecake and potato salad, both of which were very well regarded.
She liked it even more when people asked her for the recipes. She would reply that she was taking that to the grave with her. And she was a woman of her word.

I don't understand why people don't share their recipes, especially for something like potato salad. What's the point?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 20, 2023 12:41 AM |
Hot and spicy things. I didn't start liking hot and spicy things until after she died. Too bad, we could've bonded over that. She had a chili pepper bush in her back yard. When she went on vacation, my job was to pick those chili peppers every day, before the birds got to them.

Smoking unfiltered Pall Malls from dawn til dusk while drinking instant coffee
Talking on the phone for hours each day, bragging about her petty triumphs to her captive family and suburban circle of like-minded friends
Getting dolled up in her full length mink coat, knit dresses and stiletto heels
Wearing White Shoulders, Revlon Intimate and latterly White Diamonds perfume
Spending every weekend and several evenings during the week at the country club
Sharing her unfiltered opinions far and wide
Playing mah-jongg since her teens
Dealing with a revolving door of live-in household staff
Pitting people against each other and enjoying the ensuing fireworks
Being at war with the neighbors
Losing her temper without warning and smashing one child across the face
