CNN is breaking the story now - more details to come. This happened last night (May 16).
Harry and Meghan involved in 'near catastrophic' car chase by paparazzi in NYC
by Anonymous | reply 603 | May 18, 2023 6:38 AM |
So close!!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 17, 2023 2:31 PM |
Like with Princess Diana, these paparazzi have tunnel vision.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 17, 2023 2:32 PM |
Couldn’t have been that bad if they had to issue their own statement instead of being in the news.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 17, 2023 2:32 PM |
How very interesting that this occurs when Harry's fighting court battles in England about "security". Coincidence?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 17, 2023 2:32 PM |
I assume the paparazzi were trying to get away from them.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 17, 2023 2:32 PM |
Oh, please.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 17, 2023 2:34 PM |
US media does not chase celebrities around for 2 hours. If anyone actually did, they were from the UK. It’s really unending with these people. I wish they would take their clownery back to England to rejoin the rest of the circus.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 17, 2023 2:34 PM |
Wait…they’re saying it was a two hour chase? In NYC traffic? Involving cops?
I call bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 17, 2023 2:35 PM |
Meghan's mother was also in the car. I feel bad for Harry - this must be traumatizing to him after what happened to his mother 26 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 17, 2023 2:35 PM |
The snarky comments have already been made. So I'll pry a positive one out: Markle's mom looks great in that OP link photo!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 17, 2023 2:36 PM |
Anything to get attention.
Harry married his mother.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 17, 2023 2:37 PM |
[quote] Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and her mother were involved in a "near catastrophic" car chase after being followed by paparazzi, according to his spokesperson.
Yet another PR drop by WME.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 17, 2023 2:37 PM |
Like Diana's fatal accident in 1997, I say Charles and Camilla's fingerprints are all over this.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 17, 2023 2:37 PM |
Was there an accident or not? Or is he assuming it would have been catastrophic if they actually collided…on a NYC Street…going 25MPH…with cops in pursuit.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 17, 2023 2:38 PM |
Why would anyone (including the idiot Diana) bother to have a car chase with paparazzi? They're not members of The Sopranos. The worst they can do to you if you go slow is get a bad picture (in the dark).
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 17, 2023 2:39 PM |
A city of 9 million cell phones and no one heard anything about this TWO HOUR chase until Harry's spokesperson put out a statement. Okayyyyy.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 17, 2023 2:39 PM |
This happened last night, it's nearly 11:00 AM east coast time & no pictures? No wrecked car? No pictures of a weeping Markle draped on Haz's arm?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 17, 2023 2:39 PM |
R5 comment of the day! HAHAHAHAHAAHA!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 17, 2023 2:40 PM |
You do not have to endanger lives for a photo for God's sake! They're Royals alright, DRAMA QUEENS!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 17, 2023 2:41 PM |
Ha! Even CNN is questioning this!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 17, 2023 2:41 PM |
Boy, some of you won't be happy until these two you obsessively hate because you have no lives of your own, are dead. You really are as hateful and deranged as the avg MAGAts, except these two, don't actually have anything to do with your life. You seek out stories about them.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 17, 2023 2:42 PM |
Paparazzi were on scooters and bikes!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 17, 2023 2:42 PM |
Yep, R5 wins the thread.
(It was probably Parker and Stone they were chasing. This whole story sounds like part of the sequel.)
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 17, 2023 2:43 PM |
R14 Read the thread title - 'near catastrophic car chase' which means no accident.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 17, 2023 2:43 PM |
Two hours!? Why didn’t they pull over?

This is exactly like Megs hysteria when an electric heater caught fire in South Africa. My son was almost burned up, drama, drama, hysteria. Until you get to the admission that her son wasn't in the room when the heater caught fire.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 17, 2023 2:47 PM |
R25, I know, where were they going for two hours? Did they get lost in Queens?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 17, 2023 2:48 PM |
R25 According to John Miller on CNN, they could not pull over because they were surrounded by cars, scooters and motorcycles. They did make their way to the 67th Police Precinct, but the paparazzi followed them there and surrounded them. Miller said the scooters and motorcycles were also riding on sidewalks trying to keep up with the car.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 17, 2023 2:48 PM |
[quote]Read the thread title - 'near catastrophic car chase' which means no accident.
It means no such thing. A near catastrophic accident could be an accident that could have been a lot worse. It doesn’t conjure of images of them sitting on the street of the 19th Precinct trying to come up with a plan to avoid the paparazzi on bikes and scooters.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 17, 2023 2:48 PM |
Why were they trying to outrun them? They are clearly staying a hotel- they weren't even going home - who cares? Unless they own a place there and didn't want anyone to know the address ?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 17, 2023 2:48 PM |
Two hours in Manhattan. No pics or phone footage. No report of this until Harry released a statement. Complete bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 17, 2023 2:49 PM |
These accounts are very scant on the details, which makes me think they're aren't many.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 17, 2023 2:50 PM |
The 67th? In Brooklyn? Get out of here!
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 17, 2023 2:51 PM |
Harry gets uglier by the day. Was it the cocaine or is it true what they say about royal families in general?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 17, 2023 2:51 PM |
I thought they said 19th Precinct which is on 67th Street. CNN anchors don’t seem to be buying this.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 17, 2023 2:54 PM |
R29, that precinct is in Brooklyn. If this happened, there has to be video.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 17, 2023 2:54 PM |
There isn't really room for a dramatic car "chase" in that part of NY. Are we sure H&M are not twisting the truth? Perhaps a few vehicles just happened to be traveling in the same direction!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 17, 2023 2:55 PM |
R30 What part of 'car chase' do you not understand ? 'Car chase' is different from a 'car accident'.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 17, 2023 2:56 PM |
"Catastrophic" = minor fender bender.
(We've learned by now how to translate Archewell's self-melodramatizing lingo).
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 17, 2023 2:58 PM |
Okay, pedant, r39.
It was the 19th Precinct and they were staying at a private residence on the UES.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 17, 2023 2:58 PM |
R5 has won the thread
It can be closed now
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 17, 2023 2:59 PM |
What a boon for them!
They're back in the news!

[quote] Are we sure H&M are not twisting the truth?
The entire known universe turns to R38, takes a collective deep breathe and in perfect unison says 'DUUUUHHHHHHHHH".

Bull. Fucking. Shit.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 17, 2023 2:59 PM |
R34 and R36 My apologies - I meant 19th on 67th Street. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks R36 for cprrecting this !
CNN seems a bit doubtful. I think they keep questioning why there was no videos or witnesses to this at 12 midnight.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 17, 2023 3:00 PM |
I assume they can afford cell phones in which they could have called the Cops for help. They also could have filmed it, and I'm sure if they did the footage would be all over the news.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 17, 2023 3:00 PM |
Anything....anything to change the subject from the fact they were photographed going into a cheapass Hertz agency.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 17, 2023 3:00 PM |
The "catastrophic" car chase was only reported by their spokesperson??? Oh, please. Where's the video? Where's the police report?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 17, 2023 3:01 PM |
I doubt it was a chase so much as they were trying to duck paparazzi and couldn't, and at one point it turned into a chase. Without reading the entire release (which I can't find) it's hard to tell what they mean. Based on the several quotes on the BBC though, it doesn't sound like some 1970s-era movie car chase, and while I know the usual types on here will disagree, Meghan knows enough about New York to know not to say their car was chased continuously on a road for two solid hours, like they were on some interstate.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 17, 2023 3:01 PM |
R41 Apologies to you if English is your third or fourth language, and you can't differentiate between 'car chase' and 'car accident'.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 17, 2023 3:01 PM |
Did the paps have guns instead of cameras? Why didn't they want to be photographed so bad? Just get out and have your goddamned photograph taken as you walk into a fucking hotel or whatever, jesus
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 17, 2023 3:02 PM |
This is such bullshit. They don’t even need much security, if any, in CA. Nobody is actively checking for these people. Even the Royal Family, nobody is chasing them down like it is the 90s. Paparazzi and media has changed dramatically since then. Now celebrities pay them!
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 17, 2023 3:02 PM |
R29, I also have a hard time imaging scooters and motorcycles chasing along on sidewalks. They’d be running into all of those outdoor sidewalk dining areas.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 17, 2023 3:02 PM |
They were chased by Hertz personnel. The check for the gold dress deposit bounced.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 17, 2023 3:03 PM |
[quote]This happened last night, it's nearly 11:00 AM east coast time & no pictures? No wrecked car? No pictures of a weeping Markle draped on Haz's arm?
There's no wrecked car because there was no wreck, and they didn't claim there was.
If they had released the kind of photos you described, you'd be on your knees screaming "BUT BUT PRIVACY TOOOUUUUURRRR!!!" in a rage.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 17, 2023 3:03 PM |
Look. The tabloids, including the British tabloids, pay money for photos and stories,
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 17, 2023 3:04 PM |
somebody SLAP THEM
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 17, 2023 3:04 PM |
there is no way this happened, none. there isn't such a market for pictures of them that any paparazzi would chase them for two hours. new york is full of people far more interesting and famous than these two.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 17, 2023 3:06 PM |
They were probably just going somewhere they didn't want the paps to see, got followed in slow NYC traffic for a couple of hours while they tried to duck them, and at one point almost ran over some dink on a scooter and figured they'd better release a statement before said dink and/or dink's employer pitched a fit about it.
That's my take based on the statement pointedly saying that there are dangers to "all involved" when this kind of thing happens.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 17, 2023 3:06 PM |
Also, celebrities dying to appear more sought-after than they are (see JLo) hire the paps to look like they're in demand. I'm sure Markle pays plenty of paps. Her recent 'hike' without her dogs is a good example.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 17, 2023 3:06 PM |
R50, this is the statement by their spokesperson. It says that there was a “relentless” pursuit that lasted “over two hours.”
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 17, 2023 3:07 PM |
Yes, it's all a conspiracy involving the 67th precinct in Flatbush. Fucking idiots. Go wait for JFK Jr. in Dallas while you're at it, klangrannies.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 17, 2023 3:07 PM |
This is so bogus.
With the bumper to bumper traffic in NYC, there can never be a car chase, or in this case, a scooter chase. The paparazzi could have just walked up to their car and snapped a picture and walked away before this desperate Diana wannabe's car even made it to the next block.
Such a pathetic couple.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 17, 2023 3:07 PM |
oh please, there is no way they were CHASED. cars barely move in midtown!
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 17, 2023 3:08 PM |
It was beautiful weather last night in NYC and people were out and about. Where are the witnesses? Cell phone video? 911 calls?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 17, 2023 3:08 PM |
R66, are you even from NYC, shit-for-brains? If it happened at night, it isn't bumper-to-bumper, you moron.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 17, 2023 3:10 PM |
Was Gloria Steinem driving? I thought her license was revoked.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 17, 2023 3:10 PM |
[quote] this is the statement by their spokesperson. It says that there was a “relentless” pursuit that lasted “over two hours.”
It's a crock, a ruse, never happened. Conjured up a PR person to assist Harry with his security court case in the UK. So he can say "See? Told ya so!".
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 17, 2023 3:11 PM |
r63, they said they were being chased by paps on scooters. That means it could not, by definition, have been some wild two-hour uninterrupted car chase.
The publicist's statement is melodramatic and chuckleworthy, but these two aren't stupid enough to lie about officers in the NYPD almost being hit by a pap trying to get a picture of them in their car.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 17, 2023 3:12 PM |
Like in the Netflix documentary when that BlueBike rider obliviously rode past them and they had that panic attack?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 17, 2023 3:12 PM |
If they were in the city and ended up in Brooklyn, why is it hard for you to believe in happened over two hours? Boy, you people who hate them are really sick people.
John Miller doesn't go along with this type of ruse.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 17, 2023 3:13 PM |
Why were they in Brooklyn if they were staying at a hotel in Manhattan where - presumably - they left their precious infants with the hotel's babysitter.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 17, 2023 3:17 PM |
they were leaving a formal event whose location was public knowledge, an event designed to get them publicity. why would they run from photographers, if there even was a chase? why not just go back to the hotel and be photographed once more in your fancy gown? this doesn't make any sense
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 17, 2023 3:17 PM |
R71, they have already contradicted their own spokesperson’s statement?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 17, 2023 3:17 PM |
Wait, there's more!
6 blacked out vehicles following them!
Scooters on the sidewalk!
A 2 hour chase thru NYC!
Pedestrians hit!
Other cars were hit!
2 cops almost were hit!
And no one even noticed until the Dutchess of Narcissism had her spokesperson broke the news??????
Jeez. What's a gal gotta do when a nurse trying to steal a bicycle from a black kid gets more attention than Her Royal Hynie.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 17, 2023 3:18 PM |
They should have taken the subway. Just sayin’
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 17, 2023 3:18 PM |
They were going somewhere they didn't want the paps to follow them. That seems pretty obvious.
I know most of you will assume that means they were going to a baby-eating contest sponsored by the Church of Satan but I'd bet they were just going to someone else's house or to dinner.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | May 17, 2023 3:19 PM |
Their drive from 54th Street to anywhere in Manhattan could not have been a 2 hour chase. They were stuck in traffic and mad that the paps had easy access to them as a result. They and/or the paps got aggressive, which is not at all unusual in NYC traffic, except of course if you want attention and have a motive to spin a "we're in demand and in danger!" narrative.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 17, 2023 3:19 PM |
How do you have a 2 hour car chase in NYC?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 17, 2023 3:19 PM |
Being chased by kids on Big Wheels, is hardly a threat.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 17, 2023 3:20 PM |
[quote]I doubt it was a chase so much as they were trying to duck paparazzi and couldn't,
This is pretty much how CNN describes it. They were also in a car with blackout windows. Sounds like Harry had a meltdown over a few photographers and fled.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | May 17, 2023 3:20 PM |
NYC!!
by Anonymous | reply 85 | May 17, 2023 3:20 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 17, 2023 3:21 PM |
The cynical version of me believes that the Harkles' narcissism can't take the "bad press" from recent events that they had to go for the sympathy by playing off Diana's death.
By making it a "near catastrophic" car chase by papparazzi, it intentionally calls back to Diana.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | May 17, 2023 3:22 PM |
On the bright side, maybe they’ll never return to our fair city.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 17, 2023 3:23 PM |
These two will do anything to align themselves with victimhood.
Car chase by paparazzi like Mommy Diana. A stalker arrested outside their Montecito home.
What predictable timing too...a day after Harry was denied his request to hire British police by the Home Office.
In Meghan's speech last night, she hailed "service". Anyone with a brain knows she really means "self-service".
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 17, 2023 3:26 PM |
R90 Seems like the US is much more dangerous than the UK
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 17, 2023 3:27 PM |
Two things to keep in mind when assessing the credibility of this story:
1. Meghan while at Wimbledon--so, in public--had her security order a man to stop taking her picture... when the man wasn't taking her picture.
2. There's a scene in their Netflix documentary where they are in the car obsessing about being followed by one guy they claim is a pap on a scooter... who does not appear to be paying any attention to them.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 17, 2023 3:30 PM |
CNN reporting that NYPD has confirmed the incident happened.
Or are CNN and the NYPD also on Meghan's payroll?

I realize that it's hard to fathom what goes through the minds of narcissists.
But honestly, isn't living in this constant state of victimhood tiring? Doesn't spending 24x7 thinking about how to manipulate other people and the public to love you leave no time for anything else?
I always find it a bit sad that people like this squander such life advantages and focus on such petty concerns. Can you imagine if they actually focused on racial equality, hunger, homelessness, real mental health issues, or education?

The CNN anchors are skeptical and the NYPD hasn’t confirmed the hyperbole. It seems like Harry had a fit over a few photographers and they stopped at the 19th Precinct for over an hour.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 17, 2023 3:35 PM |
Since it’s been confirmed by the NYPD that the police were involved, it’s trollish to argue that it didn’t happen or was blown out of proportion. No one stops by a police station without honestly thinking they are in danger.
Don’t forget that Harry almost certainly has some form of PTSD surrounding paparazzi due to the chasing down of his mother twenty-five years ago, resulting g in her death. Add to that the fact that someone was arrested stalking their home in California the day before. It seems completely logical that Harry wouldn’t want people knowing where he was staying in NYC.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | May 17, 2023 3:37 PM |
This scenario fits the PAY NO ATTENTION WORLD TOUR.
Their driver can simple NOT chase, not flee, whatever. Just drive normally if there are paparazzi. What's the worse that can happen? They take a picture. Why not wave and smile?

I'm sure I remember a similar incident with William & Kate while they were dating in the mid-2000s, but I Googled and can't find any mention of it. Might be a Mandela effect.
I'm not a fan of Harry & Meghan, but this is awful. The paparazzi should never pursue anyone to this extent.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | May 17, 2023 3:38 PM |
Somehow Taylor Swift and Leo DiCaprio manage to live in this terrible awful city 365 days a year and the worst incident that ever happened to them was a couple times someone has snuck a picture of them at Casa Cipraini. I guess those two will never know what it's like to be as famous and desirable as Meghan.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | May 17, 2023 3:39 PM |

Come off it. CNN and the NYPD both confirmed it happened. You're just upset because it was confirmed, so you're trying to make it seem like it wasn't.
You guys realize YOU'RE the reason the paps chase them so much, right? Every thread we have, including this one, is full of you haters talking about every single detail of this couple's life, because you read every article and zoom in on every photo and watch every documentary. Pics of these two sell to tabloids catering to you.
And then you act like no one cares about them? You do. You all do, and deeply. You can't stop caring about them.

R109, we don’t know what actually happened. We’ll wait for the footage. Perhaps they FELT that they were in danger, but that doesn’t automatically mean their actions were objectively reasonable.

R102, is there any nonsense these 2 won't spew that you don't accept without verification? You don't have to be a hater to notice these 2 love to spin everything in such a way that they are both martyrs and heroes.
As an example of his family's horrible treatment of her, Harry took issue with Kate not wanting to share lip gloss with Meghan. That pretty much speaks to how much they are willing to elevate anything for their narrative.

I’m guessing it was paparazzi for the Daily Mail. They had a headline about Harry hailing a cab, but if you click the story it’s all about a body language expert and says nothing of the taxi. They also have nothing about this story and you know they’re obsessed with this these two.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | May 17, 2023 4:07 PM |
This is really disgusting and shame on them for invoking the tragedy of his mother to contrive a non-situation just to score media and political points. It is disgusting for anyone to fabricate drama that disrupts people's normal city life - publicly claiming you're traumatized when it's really just trying to get post-coronation attention. Really gross. People who exploit public sentiment like these people have really, truly empty lives. Go away into the sun.

Fucking eyeroll. These 2 are such attention whores. They realize that after the Coronation, there's really not much they'll be involved in relating to the Royal Family until Charles croaks (and who knows when that will happen). Now that they've spilled all the tea, they have to rely on their charming personalities to stay relevant. Or to invent dramas like this one.

Actually the image at r187's link shows that it did last at least an hour and a half. They tried to lose the paps for an hour and 15 minutes, then went to the police station for 15 minutes, then went to the hotel.
Nothing so far about the NYPD saying this never happened. Everything linked has actually confirmed it.
It's just that you guys are spinning what they said, that they were being followed by paps in scooters and cars that almost hit pedestrians, to claiming their publicist said there was a two-hour non-stop car chase like in the movies.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | May 17, 2023 5:00 PM |
The Queen, riding a horse with nothing but her military uniform to protect her, was shot at in public. She carried on as if nothing happened.
These two are traumatised by press allegedly wanting to photograph them leaving a publicised event. Meghan doesn’t want to face the intrusion of being photographed. Having your privacy invaded while on a private hike in the woods is one thing, but being photographed in New York City after leaving a public event is another matter entirely.

The DM and the Mirror had stories about them in a taxi, complete with some of those pap photos, and the NYPD was escorting them and helping them get to the hotel, so it obviously happened.

R232, the spokesperson described it as "a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours . . ." Therefore, in their own words, it was a car chase, it was relentless [i.e., it was nonstop], and it lasted over two hours.

There hasn’t been a crash like Diana’s since that happened. And we have actual stars in the US, not disgraced foreign royals and supporting actresses from basic cable. And what exactly were the paps after? A candid shot after a widely publicized event? Why would they take that risk?
I feel bad for the UK with how embarrassing this is going to turn out.

It’s like Harry has this weird idea he can save Meghan like he couldn’t save Diana, never mind the only danger Meghan is in is a near-catastrophic absence of positive press coverage.

The Harkles totally set this up knowing paps from the Daily Fail would be hanging around.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | May 17, 2023 6:00 PM |
There are so many comments in here that make it clear that people just hate the Harkles and didn't bother to read any of the links.
Myth #1: they were headed back to their hotel. No, they weren't, they were staying with friends and they didn't want the paparazzi to follow them to their friend's location. That's understandable.
Myth #2: they jumped straight into a taxi. No, they got into a car, claim they were pursued, and switched into a taxi to try to send the car off and leave the paparazzi away. Also reasonable.
Myth #3: they were trying to avoid photographers. No, they said they left through the public entrance and posed for photos before getting in the car. They gave whoever wanted pictures plenty of opportunities to take them, and then they left. Whether paparazzi followed them or not doesn't change the fact that they did purposely make a public appearance and pose for photos. They weren't trying to be deceptive and sneak out.
I'm not a defender, I could care less about them. I care more about the comments asking why didn't they go to their hotel, why did they get in a cab, if they wanted paparazzi attention, so much, why did they pretend to sneak away?
All of those answers were in the links.

However, it is a completely different story in the UK (England). The British (English) generate a Metric Fuck Tonne of revenue off these two which is why The Fail, The Dim and The Slow run a minimum of five stories a day on them: click$ for revenue$. If the British tabloids wanted these two retired working royals to sink into true obscurity, they would quit running stories on them.

Harry and Meghan’s New York taxi driver Sukhcharn Singh blows their car chase story apart: “I don’t think I would call it a chase. I never felt like I was in danger. It wasn’t like a car chase in a movie. They were quiet and seemed scared but it’s New York — it’s safe.”
by Anonymous | reply 291 | May 17, 2023 6:09 PM |
So, they go to Meghan’s prize giving, preening for the photographers throughout, but we are supposed to believe that the market for photos from the same event (of the 3 of them in the same outfits, on the same night) is so strong that the media was not going to be content with the ones they had been given (or had taken) for free.

Good points, R279.
Here are some other elements to consider. If he and she as members of the British Royal Family were attending a function in New York City as members of that family, the NYPD would escort them around town, making it easier for them to get from point A to point B.
The NYPD may have been at this function for crowd control, but the NYPD would not provide this couple with an escort, because this is not an official visit. Like it or not, they are private persons, albeit celebrities. They are relying on private security, who cannot get them from point A to point B in minimal time, because it's midtown Manhattan and they are not the cops.
It was a chaotic scene, no doubt...intrusive and bothersome to the Mountbatten-Windsors and her mother. And it may also have been reckless and endangering to passersby and other vehicles. But the couple is also hyping it and exaggerating the alleged incident for all that it is worth.
The lessons drawn from his mother's death included her reliance upon Dodi's people to provide security. That failed miserably. Perhaps the couple should reconsider returning to Britain and actually doing something that would give meaning to the titles they hold. They would be accorded police protection for that.

by Anonymous | reply 299 | May 17, 2023 6:22 PM |
I have never seen swarms of paparazzi in NYC outside of an occasional red carpet event. Even then it's pretty chill.
I remember when Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds first moved to Bedford and there were a few very clearly staged paparazzi events that had their more famous and far more powerful neighbors smirking. But then a staged paparazzi "car chase" through the bucolic streets of Bedford raised skeptical eyebrows. They went too far when they alerted paps about an Easter egg hunt at Martha Stewart's house. Somebody must have told them to knock it off before they're laughed out of town. That must have been enough to shut it down. It simply isn't done here.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | May 17, 2023 6:23 PM |
So I read Harry's idiotic book, and he firmly believes that the drunk drunk driver had nothing to do with his mother's death, it was 100% the paps' fault. He also believes that the paps will also hunt down and kill his wife, if someone else doesn't pay for dictator-level security!
He must have freaked the fuck out, if paps actually followed his car for the first time in years! That's why there's no phone footage of the terrible dangerous paps from inside the car, the real danger was Harry having a shitfit and endangering everyone, probably screaming at the driver to go all action-movie and run red lights. Now that actually *would* have made it a dangerous car chase...

Megz wants that LA 00s pap vibe, which hasn’t existed since a drunk Brit, Linds & Paris crammed in that Aston Martin. She wants the chaos, to feel wanted, to feel holier-than-thou, to be worshipped like Diana, but it’s all artificial.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | May 17, 2023 6:36 PM |
To throw a bone to poor, privileged, desperately IQ-challenged Harry Battenberg, he probably never experienced the "near-catastrophic" phenomenon which is everyday midtown-Manhattan traffic. I can only assume that this was en route to (or from) the wife's acceptance ritual for the "important woman trophy" absurdity that she was able to attend, while the coronation was off-limits (that said, her not showing up at that silly pageant was one of her/their best decisions to date... though the bar is low). The most amusing part of this all is that this was all prefaced in that cringeworthy "Africa" documentary (aka the "nobody asked me whether I was okay" show). Poor pre-S'mores-campfire Harry pulled out every stop to suggest that his wife would certainly meet the same fate as his mommy. When that didn't happen, it was only natural that he/they would want to inflate facts to make them fit. Right? I mean, let's not waste too much time on the deets. There's more Archwell boilerplate copy to "craft," more important-womanish awards to collect. May they both find the bandwidth to heal, and the largely unwatched Networks documentaries in which to broadcast such healing.
PS: Kinda loving the gentle taxi-driver viewpoint and the NYPD shade: Prince Harry and Meghan 'paparazzi car chase' was not 'near catastrophic', NYPD officials suggest "A taxi driver who picked up the Sussexes has said 'I don't think I would call it a chase' - but added the couple were "quiet and seemed scared" as they sat in the back of his car for around 10 minutes."
PPS: They were in a fucking TAXI?

That's not true. Princess Anne isn't happy and she gave a very, very rare interview and very nicely said this slimmed down monarchy really isn't working. She went on to say she already does enough work, so basically Her brother shouldn't expect her to do anymore work.

There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard.”
Mayor Eric Adams appeared to agree, telling reporters: “I would find it hard to believe that there was a two-hour high speed chase.” But he said that even a 10-minute pursuit would be “extremely dangerous in New York City. We have a lot of traffic, a lot of movement, a lot of people are using our streets.”
He added: “I don’t think there’s many of us who don’t recall how his mom died and it would be horrific to lose an innocent bystander during a chase like this and for something to have happened to them as well. I think that was a bit reckless and irresponsible."

Idk…followed/pursued/chased.
If I was driving and had a bunch of people that I didn’t know on scooters / bikes / mopeds / in other cars coming after me for over an hour, and I later recanted the story to friends, I don’t think anyone would reasonably contradict me if I said ‘I was chased’ regardless of the speed I was driving. A ‘cad chase’ to me doesn’t require a certain speed to be achieved before it qualifies as that, rather than the act of being pursued by another vehicle qualifies it.

And nobody is going to be following her in a few years when her looks go. Meghan's looking older. Try-hard, Anne Hathaway without- the- charm personality. Tired crows feet, graying hair, more wrinkles. Skinny chicken legs carrying a SpongeBob body with no hourglass. But then we'll have to hear about their goddamn kids. Princess Charlottes Web and Princess Lily Pad throwing shade.
I hate these people. I hate royalty. Imagine having to bow to people for real. This family. They're a lewd, crude, rude, bag of pre-chewed food, dude, man-thrush, flea-bitten sack of maggot vomit, silly, stupid, short-sighted slug, warthog-faced buffoon, disgusting, filthy, foul, slimy, stinking, repulsive sack of maggots, pus-filled blister, scurvy-ridden rat brain, brain-dead, bone-headed, pencil-necked geek, nincompoop!

by Anonymous | reply 357 | May 17, 2023 7:54 PM |
Skipping down to the bottom of the thread (this may be somewhere in the hundreds of posts).
This what the cops involved in the alleged incident had to say about it:
[quote] The New York Police Department said in a statement: "On Wednesday evening, May 16, the NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard."
Translation: Nothing fucking happened to the Duke and Duchess of Overseas. A few paps were there who were not the ones the Sussexes hired for themselves.

The cab driver who has spoken out only drove them for 10 minutes - picked them up at the police station and then returned them there. I want to hear from the driver of the SUV, because if they were going 60 mph like they say, then he would be the one to remark on it.

H&M's defenders keep trying to skip over their unbelievably stupid unforced error by releasing the unprompted and unnecessary hyperbolic statement that this was a "near catastrophic" incident. If they simply HAD to run to the press to complain, they could have kept it simple--"We want to keep the location where we are staying private for the sake of a friend, but the press insisted on following us so we had to seek police assistance." But the truth is never enough for them, because they have a narrative to sell that is only coincidentally connected to reality, if at all.
They make this same mistake over and over--releasing their "half in half out" manifesto as if it were a done deal only to be smacked down when the Queen herself vetoed most of it, and rushing ahead with poorly thought out stories like secret weddings and taco lunches that get walked back by the person who didn't agree to be part of their nonsense. It was fun at first to watch their Acme PR bombs blow up in their faces, but now it's just getting tedious.
by Anonymous | reply 362 | May 17, 2023 7:59 PM |
It's also daft that they chose to stay at a friend's house some distance away, instead of at a nearby hotel. Said friend presumably also had two spare rooms, for Doria as well as Meghan and Harry (if they stay in the same room, that is).
From what I've observed, celebrities, etc. who are appearing at events tend to stay in hotels near the venue, as it's just a lot easier for their various preparations and for getting to and from the venue without extra hassle and also avoids fans or paps tracking them to a private house.

He continued, "We (paparazzi] are lazy; we don't waste two hours and have never done that before. The security was provoking us, saying we would get a shot outside. That was a lie as they directed them to the garage. And then we complained as to why they lied, then they took out their camera phones and started recording us, trying to capture us being rude for the documentary they were filming." "This wasn't a high-speed chase. We got into our cars to go to the next spot to wait outside to get our pictures. If they really felt this way, they could have driven to the police precinct or entered another garage. The reality was we were being used as extras for their documentary to create their cliffhanger Princess Diana moment."

Statement from photo agency BACKGRID (which Meghan calls for pap photos):
[quote]At BACKGRID USA Inc., we value transparency and ethics in journalism, which include providing fair and factual responses to claims. We are aware of Prince Harrys statement regarding an alleged "near catastrophic car chase" involving himself, Meghan Markle, and her mother, in New York City on Tuesday night." "We want to clarity that we have received photos and videos of last night's events from four freelance photographers, three of whom were in cars and one of whom was riding a bicycle. It is important to note that these photographers have a professional responsibility to cover newsworthy events and personalities, including public figures such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle." "According to the accounts given by these freelance contributors, they were covering the couple's stay in New York City, including the possibility of a dinner after an award ceremony. They had no intention of causing any distress or harm, as their only tool was their cameras. A few of the photos even show Meghan Markle smiling inside a cab.The photographers report that one of the four SUVs from Prince Harry's security escort was driving in a manner that could be perceived as reckless." "The vehicle was seen blocking off streets, and in one video, it is shown being pulled over by the police. We understand that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's security detail had a job to do, and we respect their work." "We do, however, want to point out that according to the photographers present, there were no near-collisions or near-crashes during this incident. The photographers have reported feeling that the couple was not in immediate danger at any point.”

Tabloids use paps. Celebrities with expensive security teams take proactive measures to avoid them *when they really want to.* Decoy hotels, back exits, underground garages, etc. Far more high profile people with press and other targets on their back manage to get around NYC every day, yet these 2 with their well-paid entourage manage to make a spectacle of themselves. ^ Busted Harold!
Second, Harry may well hope that this incident will provide him with an excuse to have his U.S. government Diplomatic Security Service detail restored. That security detail was pulled by the Trump administration following criticism from some, myself included, that a nonactive U.K. royal was being provided an expensive U.S. government protection. The advantage for Harry, however, is that a DSS detail would allow him to move without the need to suffer paparazzi pursuit and pesky traffic laws. Regardless, the already greatly overstretched DSS does not have the resources to support a full-time detail for Harry. Evincing his preference for government-provided security, Harry has engaged in legal action with the U.K. government over its removal of his Metropolitan Police service protection team.Whatever Harry says should be judged carefully.

Were they driving around for more than an hour waiting for the paps to see them and start following?
Why couldn't they afford a decent hotel near the venue? Why did they change to a yellow cab and then change back? Was it to draw more attention to themselves and gin up this Diana cosplay farce?
Just when I think I couldn't dislike them more - the SouthParkles surprise me with a boneheaded stunt like this one.

She’s a fantastic sociopath. She reminds me of a friend I used to have who could spin things that were really minor into something ”catastrophic”, and there was always enough of a grain of truth in whatever she said that it would turn into this confusing argument, where by the end of it you didn’t know what you were even really arguing about and everyone was just exhausted. That’s how everything with Meghan is, idiots who want to glom onto her victim status, royal status, race status or whatever will always have ammunition to defend her because she’s such a good liar that it’s always like “well 99% might be false but what about this one percent?”

Someone upthread suggested that they were embarrassed at staying in an Airbnb, which I am starting to think is possible. Maybe they presented themselves as a bargain to Women in Vision - flew commercial at their own expense (with Doria in Coach), paid for their four SUV convoy (rented through Hertz) and sprung for one night in an UES Airbnb.
Otherwise Meghan would have been thrilled sweeping into the Plaza, Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons, followed by her entourage.
And they were circling for two hours because that dolt Harry lost the code for the lock box.

They were at a much publicized media award show and they were "blocking their faces". Of course this was a violation of the "rules" all celebs know. You stop . You pose. You give face. Then you proceed. Harry and Meghan know this is how it works. To play "shy" at a public event is guarantied to get you heckled and chased by the paps. That's what they deliberately provoked and that's what they wanted. What they got. From the paps point of view what they deserved.

Why does such a flying circus of bullshit follow these two? As pointed out in this thread multiple times, much bigger celebrities go about their daily business without all of this crap. Harry and Meghan are under the delusion that they are as beloved and press-haunted as his mother, which is so not the case. The more they play out this fantasy in public, the more desperate and delusional they seem. It's not a good look.
by Anonymous | reply 530 | May 18, 2023 2:00 AM |
This is by far the clearest account of what seems to have happened I've yet read.
While it's clear they were annoyed (and frightened, which I understand) by the paparazzi when they were stuck behind the garbage truck, it also is clear that the report they had announced of the incident is hysterically over-the-top. It was absolutely nothing like what happened to his mother in Paris, which is what their report made it sound like.
I have never known two celebrities (not politicians) who try more ham-fistedly to manipulate the public perception of themselves as they do. They are so easy to catch out when they exaggerate or lie.

r531 I'm not really sure they get to be annoyed at all. They weren't being followed while out shopping or taking the kids to the park when yes I agree there's a certain right to privacy that should be respected. They were trailed by photographers from an award ceremony that they themselves spent the last week making sure everyone knew they were attending. That's just genuinely part of being a celebrity.

Harry wants to be a celebrity on his own terms, just like he wanted to be a prince on his own terms. He has not accepted that the world doesn't work that way, and it's looking like he never will. Meghan doesn't give a fuck--any publicity is good publicity to her.

Harry could have only had a happy, fulfilling life if he'd stayed on the luxurious but narrow track his birth and breeding suited him for. If he'd been born a few generations earlier, some clever, good-hearted aristocratic girl could have been saddled with his care and feeding, rather like Alice Montagu Douglas Scott and the ham-headed Duke of Gloucester. This theoretical wife would have helped reconcile Harry to being a former spare, and perhaps he could have done a bit of good--or at least not done any harm.
But it isn't the 1930s, and aristocratic girls have better options these days.

The only funny thing about this is KGT going batshit crazy (but sadly not enough to go into cardiac arrest) throughout the thread screeching "attempted murder" at the top of her lungs.
If Rachel wants to be Diana so badly then I suggest she fly to Paris and hire a half blind homeless drug addict (who has never had a driver's license) to drive her in a black Mercedes down the same exact tunnel at full speed.

Backgrid wouldn't admit they were at fault would they. Neither would the tabloids. And if they had photos of one of the cars driving erratically they would have sold it already and be making money off it. There is video evidence and eye witnesses stating the paps behaved as stated.

The Sussexes really are stuck in the 90s, aren't they? The paps don't work that way anymore--if they are there these days, it's usually because the celebrity called them. by Anonymous | reply 552 | May 18, 2023 2:37 AM |
Sussex stans don't seem to get that the Royals didn't need to assassinate Diana--she was already ruining herself when that accident turned her into a saint. The same is triply true for Harry now. All the BRF has to do is maintain a dignified silence, and Harry will destroy himself on his own.

If others mistakenly thought it was true and picked it up, it still came from the same corrupt source - the Sussexes.

Charles screwed up. It was obvious his darling boy was disturbed from an early age. Charles should have been brokering a marriage with a Crown Princess of some country that would have elevated spare Harry to a position similar to Prince Philip's and made he feel more in league with William. Charles should have locked in that Swedish Crown Princess Victoria before she latched on to the Personal Trainer. I bet Harry would have gone for it if he knew he would eventually ascend to the throne with her. I don't know who is left now even if Meg discards Haz. Maybe that well fed Crown Princess from the Netherlands isn't picky? She's much younger but maybe that's what he needs, someone who doesn't know any better? Just spit balling here....

r563 In all honesty given everyone has dash cams these days, it was in one of the busiest cities in the world and the police were escorting him from the start then if the paparazzi were recreating the John Wick chase scene through the streets of New York you'd think the videos of it would have been everywhere within hours of it happening.

It might help to keep in mind that the world of a narcissist is filled with lies, lies and damn lies. All meticulously shoveled in pursuit of just one thing: ATTENTION.
The way that Megs/her PR reps do it is that a dramatic event is concocted as the central theme, such as the case of the "two hour car chase". The event is then hyperbolized out of all proportion to maximize drama/ attention, such as 'near catastrophic, two hour car chase'. There is always plenty of wiggle room, plausible denability to the event, so that when people start making those 'wait a mintute' noises, a detail or two can be added/deleted as required. The goal is to keep as much of the original drama in play as possible. Same with the pathological lies, which are also invested with as much detail as possible to keep them in play. That's how grifters do it. Keep the grift in play to keep reeling in the mark. The fact that eventually the 'near catostrophic events' and pathological lies are publicly exposed for what they are - complete horsehit - is irrelevant to a grifter/pathological liar like Megs. She got what she wanted from the mark, ATTENTION.
CNN printed the story because it received a press release from Meg's PR firm WME. That CNN didn't bother to check the veracity of the story is indicative of what passes for "truth in journalism" these days. The Beeb also ran the story, but at least were responsible enough to include a caveat "BBC News has not been able to independently verify all the details".
This is but another example of maximizing the grift; get as many elements and as much drama working as possible to make rational analysis of the event impossible until long after the grift has served its purpose, when it no longer matters.
Megs entire life to date is one giganto cauldron of lies, lies and damned lies. This event is just more of the same. And of course there will be far more to come.

Spot on R569. But eventually even the most seasoned liar runs out of plays. The only real play left in Megs hands are divorcing Harry and go on the "I survived an abusive marriage with a drug addict prince" tour .When that plays out,as all plays do,she's got the kids. They are good for a 10-15 years of mileage. That poor fool has zero idea of what a viper he's nursed to his bosom, but he'll be markled soon enough.

[quote] That poor fool has zero idea of what a viper he's nursed to his bosom, but he'll be markled soon enough.
R570 Harry knows exactly with whom he has biz. It's why he married her. Someone to wreak havoc, to make granny, papa and Wills pay for Harry's lifetime of discontent. And in that he chose admirably. The reason that Megs and Harry will eventually part company is that they will no longer find being together mutually beneficial, i.e., their dual ability to generate drama, garner attention will have waned into insignificance.
The real victims in this drama are their two kids; pawns to be used/abused, with no other purpose than as emotional bludgeons. I do not envy those kids their lives.

After a day of 'near catastrophic' news where we almost lost Ms. Markle to the paparazzi hunt and their bullets of blinding flashes, let's not think of ourselves--but rather stop and ask our family, friends and neighbors--and even the victim herself, "Is Ms. Markle okay?" I mean, no one ever asks. Oh, and you too, Harry.

It's quiet fascinating how Harry's transition, from the royal paradigm of self-abnegating service (exemplied by Princess Anne), to the American celebrity paradigm of self-focused acts (exemplified by Meghan Markle), only services to highlight the naked bankrupt nature of it that is endlessly unsatisfying to the soul.

It is most unfortunate that the biggest mistake granny and papa made was to hide/protect Harry from himself. Protect him from his simple mental facilities and his inability to navigate an adult world, in the end, creating an entire persona that was a crock, a ruse. They should have let him fall on his ass and muddle through somehow staring back at his entrance exams to Eton. Help him to realize life that yes, there is merit in a simpler life as well. Instead they created a monster who is balks at responsibility, reason and rationality. A pity.

In an alternative universe, Diana never died and Harry grew up to resent her too.

R583 And this would have been the case had his mother lived too. That’s my opinion. He was always going to be an idiot.

by Anonymous | reply 586 | May 18, 2023 5:21 AM |
R584 Exactly.
The whole paparazzi shit is so 90’s / 00’s. Celebrities got to vilify them. Remember that stupid “Paparazzi” movie Mel Gibson producer? Britney’s crazy ass said her paparazzi era was the funnest time of her life.
It’s a totally euphoric experience for attention whores, non matter how much they say they hate it.
But as far as Diana, people act like if they hadn’t been speeding to get away from the paparazzi, the paparazzi would have dragged her out of the car and beat her ass or something. They were taking pictures.

Harry is so very mentally screwed up that he really requires an involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital away from Markle to detox from both drugs and his wife.
He could have been handled so much better. His family knew he was dim, why send him to Eton with William? He would have done so much better in a rural environment that could have dealt with his intellectual challenges and emphasized physical activity and sport. A smaller school, perhaps, with adequate structure and discipline so Harry could learn self regulation and accountability for behavior. Staff that could have nurtured his strengths. Real community service. Building trails and removing brush. Picking up litter. Learning humility. A place where he could have built some self esteem and an identity away from William.

The general lack of video of last night's escapade is because the only witnesses were paparazzi, who always forget to bring cameras.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | May 18, 2023 5:43 AM |
The Markles are both thirsty, lying, grifting, publicity-seeking status climbers. That's just who Markle is--and Harry has become the same as her. However, she doesn't give a shit. She just wants the publicity. However, Harry knows--or at least seemed to previously know right from wrong. So, what made him go along with this lie about a two-however nearly catastrophic car cash? He knows that didn't happen. And now he's humiliated himself. He's more careless, a lazy liar who doesn't consider obvious facts and fact-checking and so much dumber than we thought.

[quote]His family knew he was dim, why send him to Eton with William?
R590. Because the British aristocracy and most upper class societies, think places like Eton prepare you to be a man, a leader, a respectable person, etc. There is hardly a parent around--least of all the British royalty--who would send their son to some country school where he could learn humility and clear brush. They don't have the foresight for something like that at all.

R585 FWIW One of my tutors at university was a gossipy old queen who had previously been one of Charles’s tutors at Cambridge. He said that Charles had to be “helped” through his degree and wasn’t half as intelligent as he thought he was. Classic Dunning Kruger effect although at the time I don’t think that the term was widely known.

Is Harry a man, a leader and a respectable person?
Harry failed the entrance exam to Eton. That’s a clear sign he didn’t belong there.
I’m not suggesting that Harry should have been sent to janitor school. Surely, there was another UK boarding school that would have been more appropriate to his needs.

R593 we’ll never know but if Harry had been sent to Gordonstoun like his cousins Zara and Peter Phillips, and many members of his extended family including his paternal grandfather, he might have had more of a chance. But I think that he was sent to Eton because William was there and it wasn’t long after Diana died and blah blah blah. Eton is extremely traditional and the default school for the upper classes (maybe less so now) but it’s also academically very rigorous - there’s an entrance exam that isn’t easy, although I’d suggest that “allowances were made” for the poor young boy who walked behind his mother’s coffin, head bowed, yadda yadda yadda.
by Anonymous | reply 600 | May 18, 2023 6:26 AM |
Harry should have been sent to Gordonstoun, his grandfather's and father's alma mater. His father hated it. But for someone like Harry, who needed firm direction, guidance and to learn self-reliance and self-respect, the school's focus on skills and service would have seen Harry far better than dicking his way through Eton.
