They did make their way to the 67th Police Precinct, but the paparazzi followed them there and surrounded them. Based on the several quotes on the BBC though, it doesn't sound like some 1970s-era movie car chase, and while I know the usual types on here will disagree, Meghan knows enough about New York to know not to say their car was chased continuously on a road for two solid hours, like they were on some interstate.

Here are some other elements to consider. If he and she as members of the British Royal Family were attending a function in New York City as members of that family, the NYPD would escort them around town, making it easier for them to get from point A to point B.

The NYPD may have been at this function for crowd control, but the NYPD would not provide this couple with an escort, because this is not an official visit. Like it or not, they are private persons, albeit celebrities. They are relying on private security, who cannot get them from point A to point B in minimal time, because it's midtown Manhattan and they are not the cops.
