I loved Kukla, Fran and Ollie but the only film I remember is The Red Balloon. I still love it.

This was posted a short time on another thread…but it was also featured on the CBS CFF

I only remember the scorn I felt for the show when I was a kid. I knew it would be some dreary eastern European joint with dubbed English and lots of extended shots of kids in thick sweaters walking down gloomy streets on an overcast day while a twee orchestral score played beneath. Even though I was a bright kid, I resented that they wasted what could have been another hour of cartoons with some highbrow shit that was meant to expand my horizons. No kid wanted broccoli after an entire morning of Froot Loops.

And now, in honor of my disdain for the show, I'm derailing the thread with a great Match Game clip of which the thread title has reminded me.

You were too stoned on corn syrup and white sugar to get the gist…amirite?

One has stuck in my mind for all these years: It was three kids, including a girl in a long, white, old-fashioned dress, riding buses or trains around some European city. I've tried to find it, but no luck. Does anyone else remember it?

I was fascinated by Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Yugoslavia as a kid, because they all protested Soviet intervention. So I enjoyed the films from these countries. I wanted to see what they looked like and what their lives were like. I know I had a hard-on for some of the adult male actors in the films.

I remember one of the Hungarian ones was called something like Tony and the Tick Tock Dragon. And so began my lifelong judging of Europeans wearing socks with sandals.

Tiko and the Shark -still remember it after more than fifty years!

Can you imagine the TikTok generation sitting still to watch a foreign short subject film each Saturday afternoon? 😳

by Anonymousreply 12May 17, 2023 4:34 AM

Oh my goodness, I grew up on all of these and hadn't thought about it. I remember many were sad, and yet I loved them.

Another vote for Skinny & Fatty!

There was also the one about young love between a Jewish girl and gentile boy in London.

by Anonymousreply 15May 21, 2023 9:20 PM

I do not remember this I guess I was a little too young to remember it

R15 That was called "Hand in Hand", and it was memorable. I seem to recall the two kids running away and at some point getting into trouble on a boat near some river rapids.

by Anonymousreply 17May 21, 2023 9:23 PM

Yes, R17, that’s the one! Thanks. I think the girl almost drowned but she ended up OK.

by Anonymousreply 18May 21, 2023 9:26 PM

Besides "Hand in Hand", there was an excellent French film, the name escapes me.

As a kid, I loved foreign films. I would stay up late on Saturday nights and watch foreign films on PBS, one of my faves was "Umberto D". The scene with homeless old man trying to leave his beloved dog in the park, because he could no longer afford to feed the dog, was heart breaking.

Does anyone remember the one about the girl who wants to play on the boys soccer team. It was set in an Eastern European country. She gave off young Jodie Foster vibes.
