Popular TV Series that prove "too straight" for most DLers

Ted Lasso

Entourage

What else?

by Anonymousreply 46May 16, 2023 9:11 PM

Gunsmoke

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2023 7:41 PM

Yellowstone

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2023 7:45 PM

Most of the police procedurals? Some of them have some very good-looking actors, but still.

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2023 8:06 PM

Those aren't "straight". They're geared toward seniors.

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2023 8:17 PM

I'm glad you started this thread, OP. I never jumped on the bandwagon for any of the following: Ted Lasso, Entourage, Lost, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife/Fight, Walking Dead, Glee.

I'm usually down for anything that has to do with show business, but Entourage just didn't get me, and I tried it for a whole season.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2023 8:22 PM

R5 is unclear on the concept. Downton Abbey, Walking Dead, and Glee aren't "too straight", in fact they all have gay content.

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2023 8:25 PM

R5, you're missing out with "Breaking Bad" and "The Good Wife" (sometimes). I watched Downton and lived to regret it. Haven't watched the rest of them.

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2023 8:25 PM

Friday Night Lights

by Anonymousreply 8May 14, 2023 8:26 PM

Off the top of my head, I'd say Curb Your Enthusiasm. Never even checked it out, it just seems aggressively straight from a mile off.

r5 You might not have jumped on the bandwagon for The Good Wife/Fight, but those two shows weren't too straight for most DLers. They were campy as hell, especially the Baranski spinoff. Same for Glee and DA. I agree about the others listed.

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2023 8:26 PM

Laughing at the way we all pounced on the poor r5.

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2023 8:27 PM

In our defense, r10, it's a pretty stupid post.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2023 8:30 PM

Succession

Billions

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2023 8:34 PM

Succession current season is on its fourth thread. Whatever the hell it is, it ain't too straight for DLers.

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2023 8:40 PM

It might be just three posters talking to each other though, you never know on DL.

Although I don't think that's the case for the Succession threads.

by Anonymousreply 14May 14, 2023 8:44 PM

The Big Bang Theory

Two And A Half Men

Everybody Loves Raymond

by Anonymousreply 15May 14, 2023 8:50 PM

"According to Jim" ran for eight seasons without a single gay viewer.

by Anonymousreply 16May 14, 2023 9:09 PM

Glee is too straight for me.

by Anonymousreply 17May 15, 2023 1:09 AM

Bridgeton

by Anonymousreply 18May 15, 2023 3:56 AM

Some comedian said that while the Entourage finale aired, the rate of date rape sank to its lowest level in decades.

You should meet Greg, an eight-year-old Datalounger.

Unlike other shows (like, Disney+'s The Mandalorian) The Apple TV show Ted Lasso is discussed here at Datalounge. And in its final season, it features gay and bi characters.

The Golden Girls

by Anonymousreply 22May 15, 2023 7:28 AM

I may be the only human in America to have never seen a single episode of Seinfeld, but I never understood the appeal. To me, that was the show for straight people only. But I know tons of gays that watched it.

I don't think breaking bad ever had any gay characters (Oh wait. Gus Fring may have been implied to be gay) but it's one of the best TV shows ever, so I think everyone should watch it. I've never seen a show, so well plotted from beginning to end. Surely the creator must've had the entire story planned out before they even shot the first episode. It was just too perfect.

But I agree with The Big Bang Theory. Two And A Half Men, and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Is it possible that ANY gay watched any of those? And that's kind of sad, especially for the Big Bang that had an openly gay lead actor.

I know Grey's Anatomy had a lot of gay characters, but I don't think I could've ever sat through an episode. That was straight lady TV.

by Anonymousreply 23May 15, 2023 7:41 AM

Succession and Breaking Bad have zero interest for me.

by Anonymousreply 24May 15, 2023 7:45 AM

MASH?

[quote]Unlike other shows (like, Disney+'s The Mandalorian) The Apple TV show Ted Lasso is discussed here at Datalounge. And in its final season, it features gay and bi characters.

Well, fuck, we should all be watching the Mandalorian. It stars Pedro Pascal, everyone's future gay husband.

by Anonymousreply 26May 15, 2023 7:54 AM

R20 - Regarding Curb Your Enthusiasm, I would agree with you and then add that Susie Greene is a role model for another sizeable percentage of DL's posters.

by Anonymousreply 27May 15, 2023 9:26 AM

No, they planned to kill Jesse off at the end of the first season but the writers strike put an end to that. Then they had to scramble and cone up with it as they went along.

by Anonymousreply 28May 15, 2023 12:02 PM

"Shows I don't like" = "too straight!"

by Anonymousreply 29May 15, 2023 12:14 PM

R15 YES!!! To all 3! And here I thought they were just terrible shows but yes that makes so much sense. Flyover breeder snoozefests, the lot of them

by Anonymousreply 30May 15, 2023 6:24 PM

I'm gayer than laughter and Everybody Loves Raymond is one of my favorite sitcoms ever!

by Anonymousreply 31May 16, 2023 5:29 AM

Downton Abbey is probably too 'straight' for most DLers.

by Anonymousreply 32May 16, 2023 5:33 AM

Of course, gays watched The Good Wife.

But we were really watching for cunty Julianna Margulies trying to get rid of scene-stealer Archie Panjabi.

Many a DL thread dedicated to the cuntiness of Miss Margulies.

by Anonymousreply 33May 16, 2023 5:39 AM

The Big Bang Theory had an openly gay lead who won Emmies.

So, yeah, I watched it. Not to mention Mayim Bialik has a tiny place in gay camp history, in spite of her conservative religious beliefs.

Try not to think of the endless puns, but one man's meat is another man's fish.

Who's to say what's too straight from one individual to the next?

by Anonymousreply 34May 16, 2023 7:01 AM

I didn’t quite understand the whole idiot savant main character of Ted Lasso, did they explain at the end of the series that he’s on the Autism spectrum? And nobody is dumb enough not understand that American football and European Football are two different sports when accidentally hiring a new coach.

by Anonymousreply 35May 16, 2023 7:14 AM

Entourage was gross. Not one attractive male

by Anonymousreply 36May 16, 2023 7:16 AM

For me, Sopranos, total macho BS, albeit with great acting. Yeah they had one gay character, but look what happened to him.

by Anonymousreply 37May 16, 2023 8:09 AM

Two R37 - Vito Spatafore and his brief BF "Johnny Cakes."

by Anonymousreply 38May 16, 2023 10:11 AM

Ted Lasso… a show about athletes played by guys who look too weak to play pinball.

My favorite “ I’ve never watched it but I hate it”. What a bunch of worthless fuck nuts. How can you possibly comment on something you have no reference point of? Got it.

Jesus.
