Products that have disappeared

Those boil in a bag meals that came with turkey or beef in gravy. I remember having them often as a kid in the 80s. I think they disappeared sometime in the 90s.

Swanson tv dinners. Loved their turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. I'm surprised they went away. Banquet's similar cheap dinners seem to be doing fine.

They still make them. I couldn't find the turkey ones specifically on my local Safeway's app, but they still have all the other ones.

The whole company is in Canada now but they distribute to the US.

Loved those as a kid, OP. My mom would only very occasionally not cook from scratch. But she served those w/mashed potatoes (which I think is the typical selection) when we had them.

Things on my list that have been discontinued:

-Ben & Jerry's "From Russia With Buzz" -Magnum "Infinity" dark chocolate ice cream bars - Panera Bread Portobello Mushroom Panini - Ralph Lauren Safari Cologne -Gucci Rush Cologne -Dior Higher Cologne

I could go on. But I have a bad habit of really liking products or services which inevitably get discontinued.

Apparently, "Sea Monkies" are still a thing, R9. Someone I follow online was gifted those last year, but they're still as much a waste of money as they were fifty years ago. And I'd be remissed if I didn't mention my crush on the "High Karate" guy. Geeky ginger men that can ALSO perform martial arts.?! Be still my groin.

Me and my sister were latch key kids in the early 70s, and after school while my Mama was at work until 6pm, we'd eat those boil in a bag dinners, make quick instant mashed potatoes, open a can of veggies, or put the meat and gravy on French bread with lettuce and tomatoes and eat it like a poboy. They were convenient and delicious! We'd eat in front of the television while we watched reruns of the Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island...

by Anonymousreply 23May 13, 2023 9:55 AM

I have such vivid memories of the boil in bag meals because they were one of the things where we got to pick our own and I always without fail with pick chicken Alan King and we usually serve it over like two slices of torn up white bread. It was the same way with pot pies and TV dinners too. Especially like the pot pies because my mom would have us use a fork to put our initial in the pie to vent it.

I saw someone on the Reddit group call this stuff "karma farming," r10. They repeat topics over and over or steal comments from others and make new threads on them, just to get "karma" for their account so it's harder to get FFed into oblivion when they start trolling.

by Anonymousreply 28May 13, 2023 10:37 AM

The thread calls for discontinued "products" and almost all the responses are snack foods.

I always post that one on these threads. Usually gets me tons of WWs.

But lovely Cherry Chiclets does not. I don't think American gays like gum much.

by Anonymousreply 30May 13, 2023 11:01 AM

Chicken Alan King?

What, the Don Rickles boil bag was sold out?

by Anonymousreply 31May 13, 2023 11:02 AM

R28 it can function that way but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Just in gays with OCD rehashing the same topics. It IS a kind of contact, "conversation", and people want that and have a right to it.

I'm off now to the WEEKLY All About Eve thread.

I don't eat fast food anymore anyway, but I'm surprised McDonald's didn't suffer after ruining its French fries. They were so good when I was young. Now I don't even know what they do to them, but they are not very good and as soon as they cool down to room temperature, they become hard and plasticine.
