Did you think Susan Boyle was “the biggest wake up call ever” against cynicism?

That was Amanda Holden’s reaction to SuBo’s first appearance on Britain’s Got Talent.

She was the biggest wake-up call on that show that night. Her surprising performance did make people feel good for a while.

by Anonymousreply 1May 12, 2023 12:09 PM

No. That’s stupid.

by Anonymousreply 2May 12, 2023 12:11 PM

Aww, forgot about that - was a sweet performance. My mother loved it, which made me love it as well.

by Anonymousreply 3May 12, 2023 12:14 PM

I’m such a sap…this always gives me chills.

by Anonymousreply 4May 12, 2023 12:16 PM

She's a prime example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. The industry has always been looks first talent later for the most part for the longest time.

Most of the time young attractive men and women who could barely carry a tune (without the help of studio post production) are prioritized over lesser attractive (but genuinely talented) singers.

Age also plays a key role as well. It's very rare these days for someone 40 and over to start a singing or acting career.

Susan defied those odds and that's one of the things I admire about her.

by Anonymousreply 5May 12, 2023 12:19 PM

Susan Boyle was a psyop. The crowd starts cheering even before she gets a note out. The “reaction” was totally planned.

by Anonymousreply 6May 12, 2023 12:21 PM

Susan Boyle paved the way for Lea Michele! Ugly girls who can sing.

by Anonymousreply 7May 12, 2023 12:23 PM

OP, please learn the difference between "cynicism" and "prejudice."

That way you won't appear to be someone who picks her words from repetitions on your social media feeds.

by Anonymousreply 8May 12, 2023 12:26 PM

Where are the schmalz police?

by Anonymousreply 9May 12, 2023 12:28 PM

R8, OP was asking if we agreed with the judge on the show who used the word “cynicism”; the OP didn’t choose the word.

So we’re gonna put you down as a “no” then?

by Anonymousreply 10May 12, 2023 12:32 PM

No, but you do, OP.

by Anonymousreply 11May 12, 2023 12:33 PM

I just thought in an era of studio production and auto tune that it was wonderful to hear out of nowhere a distinctive and beautiful voice.

Outside of opera and the now pretty much retired Streisand, who do you think has a great voice? Adele? Good but she’s no Aretha or Barbra. Celine is kind of out of it too, but a bit like Whitney Celine’s catalogue does not come up to her voice.

by Anonymousreply 12May 12, 2023 12:39 PM

Brits are so fucking shallow. No wonder we had to save your Limey poofter asses in WWII.

by Anonymousreply 13May 12, 2023 12:50 PM

Paul Potts was another prime example of Brit shallowness.

R8 You’ve embarrassed yourself again

by Anonymousreply 15May 12, 2023 3:30 PM

where is that ugly cow nowadays?

by Anonymousreply 16May 12, 2023 3:35 PM

Meh, this fuels my cynicism. As R6 said, the crowd cheered way too early. They were so loud they wouldn’t have been able to hear her. Her performance was good, but unspectacular. If it had come from a plain, but pretty young girl, the response wouldn’t have been as positive. Her entire success , ironically, (or unironically) stemmed from the fact this good voice came from that unfortunate looking vessel.

by Anonymousreply 17May 12, 2023 4:01 PM

Loved it

by Anonymousreply 18May 12, 2023 6:34 PM

Sweet story

Simpletons are funny when they don't realize applause/audio are added and enhanced after the fact.

by Anonymousreply 19May 12, 2023 6:43 PM

I have to admit watching that again put a smile on my face.

by Anonymousreply 20May 12, 2023 6:57 PM

[quote]I have to admit watching that again put a smile on my face.

That's not a smile, Simon/R20. One of your many stitches popped.

by Anonymousreply 21May 12, 2023 7:30 PM

Whatever happened that night worked and made an otherwise dumpy hausfrau into a very wealthy international star

by Anonymousreply 22May 12, 2023 7:48 PM

You don’t seem to understand my post, simpleton R19. That’s the point. They edited it to show the screaming crowd when they really wouldn’t have. The entire bit was manipulation. They knew (including the judges) that she could sing. They knew it would be a feel good story and they manipulated the hell out of it. The fact you can’t see that makes you the simpleton and a bit of a frau.

by Anonymousreply 23May 12, 2023 8:28 PM

Dimash Kudaibergen. Find one better.

R23 Oh bless your heart

by Anonymousreply 25May 12, 2023 9:19 PM

R6 on these kinds of shows you are forced to clap constantly and everything is cut together randomly. That's why it appears that they clapped seconds before. They probably clapped at something else but that was the best clapping and made it into the cut of her totally unplanned and totally impromptu audition.

by Anonymousreply 26May 12, 2023 9:23 PM

R26 I don’t think R6 understands. It’s easily confused.

by Anonymousreply 27May 12, 2023 10:16 PM

Unfortunately she was never going to have a long lasting career because of how ugly she is. For women you have to be somewhat decent looking to have a music career. It's a little more acceptable for men to be ugly.

by Anonymousreply 28May 12, 2023 10:34 PM

I actually thought her cover of "You'll See" was mediocre even though a "real singer" was singing the song this time. Madonna's version sounds much better.

by Anonymousreply 29May 12, 2023 10:43 PM

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 30May 12, 2023 10:44 PM

To counter the DL autism trolls’ disinfo, Susan is high functioning autistic; she has what used to be called Asperger Syndrome.

How the judges and audience reacted to her is typical of the little social differences some people on the spectrum present sometimes — which some people judge as odd or worthy of mockery. In turn Susan may or may not pick up on that.

by Anonymousreply 31May 12, 2023 10:55 PM

my favorite version of “The Way We Were”. Great arrangements.

@r28, That's pretty mean. Once she got a makeover she looked fine for the type of music she sings. Also, she struggles with anxiety issues which makes the success she's already achieved and her $40 million net worth all that more remarkable

I never get tired of watching the video that introduced the entire world to Susan Boyle. Her life and career is an amazing feel good story. Makes me smile every time!

by Anonymousreply 34May 12, 2023 11:42 PM

The OP was complicit and didn't point out the primary offense.

But no one will be surprised that the neural networks of posters here run as shallow as a piss puddle.

by Anonymousreply 35May 13, 2023 1:09 AM

^Huh?

by Anonymousreply 36May 13, 2023 1:30 AM

R36 Don't bother - it's very confused

by Anonymousreply 37May 13, 2023 1:33 AM

This is the easily a top ten television moment of all time and I say that as American who has only ever seen it on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 38May 13, 2023 1:41 AM

The reason why you’re a simpleton and a dupe, R23, is because of how fervently you believe that any of that matters, when exactly none of it does.

by Anonymousreply 39May 13, 2023 1:43 AM

Thank you, R23.

And God bless your stage 4 lung cancer, sweetie,

by Anonymousreply 40May 13, 2023 1:49 PM

Susan Boyle has haggis breath!
