The ArchAndroid is an amazing album! Such a variety of musical styles. A lot of composition and creativity went into that album. But yeah, I agree that Janelle’s latest offerings are disappointments. When ArchAndroid was released, she mentioned something about POC not being so monolithic in their music, but it seems she’s walked away from that statement. There’s nothing special about another Nikki Minaj, Cardi B, etc. What happened to the cerebral, imaginative output? It’s gone.

I really like her, overall. I think she's been a bit of a try-hard with her last two albums, but in a time where music is so corporate and drained of any sort of innovation, The ArchAndroid and Electric Lady were two of the freshest and most exciting works I've heard in the last 15 years.

And her acting work has been solid. The camera loves her, and especially in Hidden Figures and Moonlight, she added gravitas and warmth.

The press for the last two albums has confused me....it seems like they're trying to cheapen her up or make her naughty for chart relevance. She's interesting on her own terms. I'd rather hear her music or watch her screen work over any other pop tart on the charts these days, for sure.

As a marching band geek, I first fell in love with the horns rips and overall groove of Sincerely Jane in college. Great memories.
