Is there anything actually unique about Gen Z?

They just seem like very very young millennials otherwise

by Anonymousreply 224June 16, 2023 4:50 PM

They embrace the nonbinary

They've been raised by single mothers, and have never been within 150 ft of a male = the sight of a daddy drives them wild at the bathouse. Christmas everyday for hairy middle aged slightly gone to seed me, and my pals.

by Anonymousreply 3May 11, 2023 10:26 AM

Everybody just thinks they're millennials.😂

by Anonymousreply 4May 11, 2023 10:28 AM

They have been showing up to vote in droves. They care about the environment. They care about women's rights. They care about LGBTQ rights. They see the Republican Party for the grifters they are. Did I mention they vote?

by Anonymousreply 5May 11, 2023 10:30 AM

They're just another version of hipsters.

by Anonymousreply 6May 11, 2023 10:32 AM

[quote] They have been showing up to vote in droves.

Do they really now? Because evidence shows they aren't that much better than the generations before them.

by Anonymousreply 7May 11, 2023 10:33 AM

They seem to have their priorities right (environment, labour laws, mental health) but they lack any sense of humour.

by Anonymousreply 8May 11, 2023 10:34 AM

Their parents insist that they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. And how DARE you disagree!

by Anonymousreply 9May 11, 2023 10:35 AM

They have stinky feet and horrible pits.

by Anonymousreply 10May 11, 2023 10:37 AM

Millennials have a better dress sense. Most middle-class Zs I see in my city dress like 1980s squatters and ravers who have been partying for 24 hours and haven’t showered in a week. The kids from less well-off neighbourhoods all dress in black and wear hoodies.

by Anonymousreply 11May 11, 2023 10:38 AM

They are extremely FAT and dress in played out 90s fashions that every other generation has already lived through.

by Anonymousreply 12May 11, 2023 10:39 AM

Their mothers insist that they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. And how DARE you disagree!

corrected that for you R9

by Anonymousreply 13May 11, 2023 10:39 AM

I'd rather have sex.

by Anonymousreply 14May 11, 2023 10:39 AM

R13 Their mothers are actual Karens

by Anonymousreply 15May 11, 2023 10:41 AM

They think "rain" and "snow" are motives for not showing up at work. They have mini dishwashers for a single person. They expect to have their rent paid for by their parent (the only one). They take immense pride in passing for SJWs. They're FEMINISTS even though they don't understand what it means.

by Anonymousreply 16May 11, 2023 10:44 AM

Their feet, balls and ass stink

by Anonymousreply 17May 11, 2023 11:03 AM

I had a Gen Z colleague once, who never showed up on snowy days because " he couldn't drive his car out of the garage". he lived 3 bus stops (or 35 min walk) away from work.

by Anonymousreply 18May 11, 2023 11:10 AM

They are like millennials, minus any sense of youthful fun.

by Anonymousreply 19May 11, 2023 11:12 AM

They rely on their cellphone to know if it's raining outside, rather than looking through the window.

by Anonymousreply 20May 11, 2023 11:19 AM

Their entire life is TikTok. Like seriously.

by Anonymousreply 21May 11, 2023 11:22 AM

They believe that Greta whatever , the moron who was paraded in the media by her failed actors parents some years ago, made an actual difference in the climate

by Anonymousreply 22May 11, 2023 11:26 AM

They haven't got a clue if they're male or female. They tink you can actually change the chromosomes

by Anonymousreply 23May 11, 2023 11:27 AM

The gay male ones are really skinny. It’s like they eschew masculinity.

by Anonymousreply 24May 11, 2023 11:27 AM

They're awkward socially -- spend more time on their phones than actually socializing or having sex.

by Anonymousreply 25May 11, 2023 11:28 AM

Not really. All the music and pop culture they enjoy is courtesy of millennials until they come up with their own thing.

by Anonymousreply 26May 11, 2023 11:31 AM

Differences from millennials that I've seen are:

Gen Z are all activists by nature/default, having come of age when politics was pop culture, whereas older millennials are a bit more balanced and less radical.

Gen Z paradoxically believe that sexual and gender identities are nonbinary, but that almost everything else sociopolitically is a stark binary of virtuous or evil, with nothing in between. Millennials are not at all like that.

Gen Z kids are the ones who police others' words and who are apt to point a finger and call out "witch!" and think nothing of tearing down a person's whole livelihood and reputation because of a single comment, even one that may have been misconstrued.

In that respect, I don't think I've ever seen a single young person of Gen Z age issue a mea culpa and admit to having been wrong about something. They seem entirely self-assured once they settle on the notion of someone being evil.

I think millennials are less religiously affiliated than people older than they are, but that gen Z people are far less religious as a whole.

However, astrology is extremely popular among gen Z people.

Gen Z slang is largely made up of slang popularized by RuPaul's Drag Race, an interesting mainstreaming of a subculture's language. They call people they like "queen" and "mother," etc.

I'm guessing because of the above, makeup is popular among boys and girls alike in Gen Z. It's a pastime. TikTok popularized 'get ready with me' videos in which young people blabber on with sociopolitical commentaries while piling on many layers of makeup, and girls and boys both do it.

Gen Z boys are as assimilated to a Barbie-standard ideal type of appearance as girls have been for many generations. It's more common than ever to see starved and ripped young men who live on supplements and are obsessive about their appearances.

Sex is less taboo to Gen Z than to any prior generation in our history. They grew up seeing porn on the Internet probably from toddlerhood, and they came of age seeing attractive people become wealthy selling their bodies online and they admire that as a career option.

Many are obsessive overachievers raised by overachieving executive Gen Xers whose identities are based on their credentials, and these kids still believe in Ivy-League universities based on status. More Gen Z than any other generation though reject higher education altogether.

This generation does not understand the idea of education for the sake of self-betterment, improved critical thinking and as a value itself. They've been told universities are a con and they reject the temptation and think they can create wealth for themselves through creating sexy or smart social media personas. Millennials still believed in college.

Gen Z probably is the most aware generation since the hippies that elected officials and journalists engage in propaganda and have an alarming influence on how we think and behave. Millennials were not very aware of this comparatively.

Gen Z don't have any real concept of how good movies about actual human beings can be; they think movie=CGI live-action comic books and Disney animations. Millennials were still exposed to some decent feature films before the Marvel takeover.

Most Millennials would have watched Star Trek, the Jetsons or read Nineteen Eighty-Four when they were young and would have had the impression that all of those are futuristic. Most gen Z kids would regard all of those as antiquated.

by Anonymousreply 27May 11, 2023 12:05 PM

Actually, no.

by Anonymousreply 28May 11, 2023 12:18 PM

This video to me is a perfect representation of unique qualities of the Gen Z generation:

1. TikTok persona

2. Shirtless young guy. (If they are in decent shape, they are always shirtless because that always increases views and engagements—very creepy way to cultivate a person's personality IMO.)

3. Applying beauty products. In this case, it's a guy in probably his early 20s using plastic under-eye patches.

4. While applying his beauty products, making a declaration of what IS and IS NOT.

5. While applying his beauty products and making a declaration of what IS and IS NOT, CORRECTING another gen Z person who was doing the same but who is WRONG WRONG WRONG.

6. Kind of debating, but not actually debating using any kind of evidence or argumentation. Just declaring that someone is wrong, done through a passive-aggressive "Let's not pretend that..."

7. All in about 10 seconds, because that is the attention span of people today but especially young people, and short videos get more views and engagements, and THAT, my dears, is the entire point of doing anything.

8. If you liked this list, be sure to LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE for more great content! You're all queens!

Actually, yes. Hormones. This is the most hormone obsessed generation in history. Using them to gain muscle, or to become “male”, or blocking them to feminize and become “female”. The lifespan of this generation should not be long due all this drug use. I would say 50s max, if they live that long.

by Anonymousreply 30May 11, 2023 12:21 PM

The stereotypical GenZ ids are all middle to upper middle-class.

by Anonymousreply 31May 11, 2023 12:53 PM

they're all faggots

by Anonymousreply 32May 11, 2023 1:00 PM

They have very little in common with millennials. Millennials were out of high school by the time smartphones and social media took over the world, whereas Gen Z experienced a completely different world throughout their formative years. The phenomenon of latchkey kids ended completely with millennials too. The oldest millenials are now in their early 40s. There is a big difference between the older millenials and the younger millenials and the older zoomers and the younger zoomers. The rapid pace of changes in pop culture and particularly the impact that technology has had on social norms among young people has created a lot of generational gaps and I think that's a completely novel thing. I have a lot more in common with the experiences of a Gen Xer who is 20 years older than me, than I do with a zoomer who is 8 years younger than me simply because the iphone didn't come out until after I graduated. The Gen alpha kids who have been getting blasted by an iPad screen starting at age 4 I consider to be a new species altogether, an invasive one in fact. They'll make zoomers look like the silent generation.

by Anonymousreply 33May 11, 2023 1:04 PM

[quote]Gen Xer who is 20 years older than me

You’re what, 35? A little older?

by Anonymousreply 34May 11, 2023 1:07 PM

R34 31

I would say that social media and the internet started to become very much a thing in the mid 2000s but it was a novelty that people had a much healthier relationship with. The people who were obsessed were just nerdy outcasts, it would take quite a while before it completely usurped all of our social behaviors. I remember chatting with my friend group during my underclassmen years about how texting was a fad that would never really catch on, it's so much easier to call. Maybe a couple of rich kids had a blackberry my senior year, myspace was something you went on for 30 minutes at the end of the day, it was nothing like now.

by Anonymousreply 35May 11, 2023 1:12 PM

You look 31.

by Anonymousreply 36May 11, 2023 1:17 PM

What's unique is the hostile, dead-eyed looks they give you whenever you dare to order a coffee from them. The most self-centered generation imaginable. When they actually bother to interact I clutch my heart in surprise.

by Anonymousreply 37May 11, 2023 2:12 PM

Take all of the negative characteristics of a millennial, and multiply it by 10x. And there you have it.

by Anonymousreply 38May 11, 2023 2:15 PM

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

by Anonymousreply 39May 11, 2023 2:25 PM

I have a feeling Generation Alpha is going to overrun them very soon.

by Anonymousreply 40May 11, 2023 2:45 PM

So many bitter, fat old cunts on this thread

by Anonymousreply 41May 11, 2023 2:47 PM

So Gen Alpha will be even more unbearable?

by Anonymousreply 42May 11, 2023 2:47 PM

I imagine the upcoming generation will be feral.

by Anonymousreply 43May 11, 2023 2:48 PM

R42 probably. But they'll live up to their name. Z is a Beta generation.

by Anonymousreply 44May 11, 2023 2:48 PM

So expect more Trumpism and transgenderism from Gen Alpha? Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 45May 11, 2023 2:51 PM

R45 Gen Alpha are the kids of Millennials and I don't think they're going to wait around taking cues from Zoomers. They're going to be pushy like their parents.

by Anonymousreply 46May 11, 2023 2:54 PM

Agreed the gay boys are femme and have daddy issues. Also agreed, they have smelly assholes from not showering daily.

Largely uninspiring, thinking fat = booty, porn stache = masculine, and perm = cool haircut.

Most 20 somethings aren't even worth a second (or first) notice these days.

by Anonymousreply 47May 11, 2023 2:54 PM

It's time we talk about OP. They have inflicted trauma on me. They need to be cancelled so that this.. weaponization of questions.. does not continue to inflict hurt, pain, and suffering upon others.

by Anonymousreply 48May 11, 2023 2:56 PM

They have no male power. There isn't a Sean Connery in this generation

by Anonymousreply 49May 11, 2023 2:56 PM

[quote][R45] Gen Alpha are the kids of Millennials and I don't think they're going to wait around taking cues from Zoomers. They're going to be pushy like their parents.

What are millennials like?

by Anonymousreply 50May 11, 2023 2:57 PM

[quote]Agreed the gay boys are femme

Why is this a problem?

by Anonymousreply 51May 11, 2023 2:58 PM

R50 like the generation who are finally pushy and demanding enough to shove Baby Boomers out of the way for good.

by Anonymousreply 52May 11, 2023 2:59 PM

R51 because....no F., no F., no A.

by Anonymousreply 53May 11, 2023 3:01 PM

Boomers and Millennials like each other, though.

by Anonymousreply 54May 11, 2023 3:02 PM

R54 Just wait until ALL of the Millennials start turning 40. They're not going to wait around for a baton to be passed. They're going to grab it

by Anonymousreply 55May 11, 2023 3:04 PM

They have people like Dylan Mulvaney to represent them and to speak for them.

by Anonymousreply 56May 11, 2023 3:07 PM

R54 do we?

by Anonymousreply 57May 11, 2023 3:09 PM

R51 Because femme gay boys take on the worst characteristics of yoga chicks and draq queens combined. Cunty and sassy for no reason. Plus, have you ever had sex with a femme guy:

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh, ooooooooooooooooohhhh, ohhhhhhhh, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee fuck my poooossssssssssy daaaady. Haaaaaaaaaaaaarder ahhhhhhhhhhh ooooooh aaaaaaaaaaaa weeeeeeeeeee oh my pooooooooooooosy!"

by Anonymousreply 58May 11, 2023 3:09 PM

I don’t think I agree, R55. Boomers and Millennials get along. It’s Boomers and Gen X who don’t get along.

by Anonymousreply 59May 11, 2023 3:09 PM

Should they transition, R58?

by Anonymousreply 60May 11, 2023 3:10 PM

R59 Millennials are not going to wait around and let whomever else is older dictate the second half of their lives.

Boomers have met their match.

by Anonymousreply 61May 11, 2023 3:12 PM

Lots of flaunting of chronic illnesses on social media.

Dire hygiene.

by Anonymousreply 62May 11, 2023 3:13 PM

They have zero resilience, if the krauts came back to send them to deathcamps, they would commit suicide en masse like lemmings, before being even reached.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 63May 11, 2023 3:14 PM

I really don’t know^. I don’t know much about Millennials.

by Anonymousreply 64May 11, 2023 3:15 PM

Despite the fact that there are subjects that they are very humourless about, Gen Z are overwhelmingly “funny” online in that Lil Nas X way. Even “basic” Gen Z’s are surprisingly witty when it comes to their social media output. And it’s not gendered, girls are expected to be as funny as boys.

And I agree that they are much less gendered than we were when it comes to gen z boys being expected to perform “sexiness” the way millennial girls were. All the aesthetics and “homiesexual” gay stunts on social media seem like an example of that.

by Anonymousreply 65May 11, 2023 3:19 PM

They take offense to everything said in humor.

The females find any man over 50 who says "Good morning" or "Good afternoon" to them as 'creepy'.

They have a very undeserved sense of entitlement and importance.

Their anxiety becomes 'triggered' by any slight variation of their planned day, as they can't handle 'stress'.

They last at a new job, on average, for five months before they quit without notice. They find their older colleagues 'creepy', they feel 'bullied' by their boss, and are inconvenienced by the fifteen minute commute to work.

by Anonymousreply 66May 11, 2023 3:20 PM

R50: assertive

by Anonymousreply 67May 11, 2023 3:24 PM

College is so expensive for them it is often unattainable, not even a possibility. They haven't been able to get the normal teenage or young person work experience, Even the typical summer jobs are taken by adults who are otherwise forced out of the workforce starting in 2008. Things are incredibly competitive and shut out for them- college, ever thinking of owning a home, hell even renting an apartment. Car insurance alone goes up $3000 a year just as having them as a secondary driver so many aren't even getting their drivers licenses.

by Anonymousreply 68May 11, 2023 3:29 PM

They sure have enough money to buy make up, nail varnish, High end cell phones, and pay the surgeon for their transition though

by Anonymousreply 69May 11, 2023 3:36 PM

Don't forget all the facial products. My niece spends $500 a month on a regimen that takes half an hour in the morning and the same at night. She's 25.

I want to tell her to save her money for when she'll really need skin care at 45.

by Anonymousreply 70May 11, 2023 3:39 PM

^ woops, not R69, meant to reply to him

by Anonymousreply 71May 11, 2023 3:40 PM

don't bother, she'll never reach 45

by Anonymousreply 72May 11, 2023 3:40 PM

She'll probably request assisted suicide in a few years, when the world will be too tuff for these exquisite flowers

by Anonymousreply 73May 11, 2023 3:42 PM

They hate Pride (because of Gatekeeping Eldergays, according to what I once read on a DL thread), but they still insist on its flag being updated with more and more stuff on it.

by Anonymousreply 74May 11, 2023 3:47 PM

They hate gay Pride no matter what^.

by Anonymousreply 75May 11, 2023 3:49 PM

Pride is so 1999.

Everything is a safe space right now. Too bad they're also triggering.

Man, I'm glad I'm too old for this shit.

by Anonymousreply 76May 11, 2023 3:52 PM

They have zero accountability, they don't understand the word "duty", or the concept of "debt". When in a male/female couple, the male self-identifying ones ask the female self-identifying ones permission to make an appointment for a phone call with their self-identifying male friends. They don't grab a drink at the bar, they join "circles" to discuss super serious socio-political topics listed in advance, such as "what does it mean to be male?"

by Anonymousreply 77May 11, 2023 3:58 PM

[quote]the male self-identifying ones ask the female self-identifying ones

Is this satire or do you for real speak this way.

by Anonymousreply 78May 11, 2023 4:07 PM

I hear the bio males have very big cocks due to hormones in the food or some such.

by Anonymousreply 79May 11, 2023 4:09 PM

Shame they chop it off

by Anonymousreply 80May 11, 2023 4:26 PM

You don't have to have a cock to be a man.

by Anonymousreply 82May 11, 2023 4:32 PM

They don't know how to socialize in person. Their only form of socialization all their lives was on technology. They don't know how to make eye contact with someone, they don't know how to make conversation with someone, etc. If someone tries to make conversation with them, they feel uncomfortable and call you 'creepy'.

They also don't go on dates with anyone. If they consider themselves 'in a relationship' with someone, that means they text all day. The physical contact they have with each other is at their apartments (paid for by their parents) or their dorm room - in which they order food in via GrubHub or DoorDash. They don't go to restaurants. They don't go to movie theaters, either, for a date - they watch Netflix. They don't attend parties - the men have their 'buddies' come over to their apartment or dorm, drink beer, and play video games. The females gather together and watch 'The Bachelor'. And most perplexing - whether they are 'in a relationship or not' - they don't have sex.

by Anonymousreply 83May 11, 2023 4:37 PM

They seem sickly. Don’t go to gym, don’t care about clothes or appearance, don’t have career aspirations (beyond being an influencer). Many are non-sexual, which is sad for a young person.

by Anonymousreply 84May 11, 2023 4:38 PM

R84 I work in a university, and have learned over the years none of them want 'careers'. They want skills (mostly tech or math skills) where they can job jump from position to position to 'make more money' (usually every five or six months). No one wants to 'settle' into a 'career'. I've kept in touch with a few students who graduated in the past - those who have graduated three years ago (2020) have averaged 6 - 8 different jobs by now. It's very scary.

And yes, none of these hot hunky male students are interested in sexual relations with another human. They're satisfied with masturbation.

by Anonymousreply 85May 11, 2023 4:45 PM

R85 That's because "careers" have largely disappeared outside of academia and a few administrative industries. Most other career tracks require participants to move on frequently - indeed, some look down on anyone who's stayed longer at a job than 2 years.

by Anonymousreply 86May 11, 2023 4:46 PM

R85 = creepy

by Anonymousreply 87May 11, 2023 4:47 PM

Not being sexual for younger non-married free adults was probably the norm for most of human existence. It's not always been the late 1960s thru say early 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 88May 11, 2023 4:47 PM

[quote]They're satisfied with masturbation.

I blame pornhub.

by Anonymousreply 89May 11, 2023 4:50 PM

R87: Gen Z thinks EVERYTHING is creepy and everybody is out to get them. They've rendered the word useless.

by Anonymousreply 90May 11, 2023 7:22 PM

They hack off their body parts and are afraid of their own shadows.

by Anonymousreply 91May 11, 2023 7:31 PM

They also don't believe in showering every day and using deodorant. Boy, can you tell.

by Anonymousreply 92May 11, 2023 7:37 PM

60% identify as lgbt but only 20% have had any same sex experience. Most are online gay only.

by Anonymousreply 94May 11, 2023 7:40 PM

Gen Z are proud of being 'neurodivergent' and take great delight in obtaining an autism or adhd diagnosis. They're not offended by being called a cunt so call them a SPAZ if you want to offend them.

by Anonymousreply 95May 11, 2023 7:43 PM

r95, I called R7 a cunt, who is clearly not a Gen Zer but someone who denigrates them.

Oh, and Fuck you, too, ya cunt.

by Anonymousreply 96May 11, 2023 7:45 PM

[QUOTE] However, astrology is extremely popular among gen Z people.

Yep. They're more superstitious than any generation since the Victorians and most sleep with crystals.

by Anonymousreply 97May 11, 2023 7:47 PM

My niece won’t return to school because “they’re all a bunch of liars”.

by Anonymousreply 98May 11, 2023 7:47 PM

They're having less sex than any generation ever because online porn has intimidated them and made them body conscious. Far more of them identify as asexual than any previous generation just so they can remove the pressure to have sex.

by Anonymousreply 99May 11, 2023 7:49 PM

They are all medicated. I don't know of one college student who isn't on heavy-duty medications for depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, etc. They either walk around the campus at a frantic pace or they walk around like a zombie.

by Anonymousreply 100May 11, 2023 8:06 PM

Sickly pallor, medicated (as above), humorless, neurotic. They need fresh air and exercise and they need to get rid of the smart phones. Where is the Surgeon General on this? Geez.

by Anonymousreply 101May 11, 2023 9:59 PM

R98 she'll do well in life

by Anonymousreply 102May 11, 2023 10:01 PM

One of them online presented me with a list of trigger words I am not allowed to say . Talking with them is like picking your way through a minefield. No banter, no smart-ass rapport, no twisted jokes, no damn fun at all. They are the humorless bureaucrats and Gen Xer's are the misfits with divorced parents using humor to stay alive.

by Anonymousreply 103May 11, 2023 11:27 PM

They get triggered by the 😂 emoji and tried to get it banned from twitter.

by Anonymousreply 104May 12, 2023 12:23 PM

The basic difference is that millennials didn’t have cellphones or the Internet until they were in their late teens and social media wasn’t really a big thing until 10 years after that.

Gen Z grew up online and has all the disadvantages of the neuroses that come with that, as well as the advantage of a greater awareness of social issues

by Anonymousreply 105May 12, 2023 12:28 PM

R104 I always use the skull or coffin now to indicate laughter, just to be on the safe side. I'm sure they'll come for that at some point in the next few years, too.

Do Gen Alpha even use emoji?

by Anonymousreply 106May 12, 2023 12:28 PM

this entire thread acts like gen z r very lib,

meanwhile, gen z guys r very in2 q anon, trad wife, alpha, incel culture, gun culture

by Anonymousreply 107May 12, 2023 12:44 PM

What?

by Anonymousreply 108May 12, 2023 12:45 PM

Bullshit R107. Incel, rape culture, QAnon crap are Republican control culture issues.

Not Gen Z liberals.

by Anonymousreply 109May 12, 2023 8:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 110May 12, 2023 8:26 PM

It is a rebound generation that that's come of age under Trump. They will move Democrats from the coin flip, edge stand Democrats have called "majorities" to genuine Democratic majorities.

I was suspended a few times from reddit because I commented that ex-gays are stigmatized and treated like shit in a pro-trans thread on askgaybros, or one of the gay subs. I was calling out their utter bullshit and hypocrisy. The final nail in my reddit coffin was the “conservative” comment.

I'm shocked at their inability to talk on the phone. On reddit, gay yutes make post after post about getting "ghosted". Someone usually asks them if they talked on the phone to get to know each other a bit and establish a rapport.

The answer is always no. They try to devise strategies to avoid getting ghosted, but talking on the phone beforehand, is a no-go.

Why?

They literally don't know how to carry on a conversation. And it terrifies them to even contemplate the act.

Generation Alpha has been born at a time of falling fertility rates across much of the world, and are experiencing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as young children. For those with access, children's entertainment has been increasingly dominated by electronic technology, social networks, and streaming services, with interest in traditional television concurrently falling. Changes in the use of technology in classrooms and other aspects of life have had a significant effect on how this generation has experienced early learning compared to previous generations. Studies have suggested that allergies, obesity and health problems related to screen time have become increasingly prevalent among children in recent years .

It's a brave and weird new world. They will never have sex with men because they are not gay or bisexual regardless.

by Anonymousreply 135May 13, 2023 1:37 PM

I heard someone recently say that we're all shedding our humanity in a social sense because of technology. Intimacy has been thrown away because of porn and on-demand sex apps like Grindr. People only look at one another when talking on Zoom or Facetime; in person, they look at their devices. Our minds have reprogrammed themselves not to connect with other human beings, not to make eye contact, but to make eye-to-screen contact.

Younger people are even more modified because instead of conversing and discussing and relating with human beings, developing complex and nuanced relationships, they broadcast themselves and tally quantified engagements and likes and shares. They understand base human desires better than older people did because the data don't lie, but they only understand and care about base human desires because those are what get them the social media stats they covet.

They don't want friends; they want followers.

They learn to give people what they want to get what they want. All things are transactional manipulations.

Years ago, it was considered demeaning to strip or sell sex. Then it became 'sex positive' to understand that those are not inherently shameful behaviors. Now stripping and fucking on camera are just means to get to the fulfillment of income and followers.

Looking attractive paradoxically is more important than ever because conventionally pretty or 'hot' people are the only ones who amass huge followings.

They don't believe in education because it won't help them gain followers, which means money; only being pretty and on top of trends can accomplish that.

And they are right. People with tens of thousands of followers or more can easily secure a book deal from a major publisher *even if they can't write.* And a brilliant writer with few followers cannot.

Young people's backward evolution into less-sophisticated, more basic types of animals is a product of real-world inputs and rewards.

by Anonymousreply 142May 13, 2023 2:26 PM

R136 summed it up brilliantly.

by Anonymousreply 143May 13, 2023 7:20 PM

R142 interesting question, thanks for asking.

It's a multifaceted answer, and obviously different according to the individual. One common complaint reported though is that the social and instinctual 'rules' of eye contact in various situations and relationships are too complex and subtle for us to understand naturally, and as we're never taught it explicitly as children it's a painful learning curve replete with social landmines to 'get it' and pass as someone who hasn't had to study it.

E.g. I've been told off or given shit before because I looked too long or didn't look at all at someone, lost in confusion about whether or not I should and if so when. For many years, I couldn't seem to time it right or judge the appropriate moment to gaze or look away. Maturity, experience, gentle hints and work to reduce social anxiety help that. One trick I love is to visually trace or spot someone's iris with a soft gaze as they're speaking for just a few long seconds, as it makes them feel respected and heard without feeling like they're under a microscope.

In my specific case, it's also a matter of intimacy, social safety & control. Over the course of my life I've misunderstood and misjudged so often, over both ASD and other things, that I don't like to feel too closely connected to people unless I'm very sure of them as emotionally 'safe' people (an absurd concept intellectually, I know there's no truly 'safe' person as we're all capable of harm). What's more, I grew up with a neglecting and rejecting critical parent who vents anger with expression, so I've learned to associate emotional close confrontation with danger. I also find that I take the feelings of others too much to heart or misread them, sometimes, and eye contact intensifies that.

Hope that helps clarify at least a bit? I feel like I've waffled or contradicted myself but perhaps not :) Paul Micallef, ASD educator on yt, explains it clearly and accurately (to my experiences, anyway) in the video at the link.

To me, Zillennials--those born in the mid and late 1990s, currently aged 25-29--are a curious bunch. They have a mix of traits, values, interests and references from the generations either side of them, and can be mistaken for either. They're not much like the oldest/older Millennials now aged 40-ish, but they're also not that like kids born in the 2000s.

Honestly, though, I think '90s babies are a generation of their own, anyhow. I was born in the early-mid 1990s, and I don't relate to older Millennials or to Gen Z either. And I don't look up to Boomers or abhor Gen X, fwiw.

The Baby Boomers were a distinctive generation. It's not "exceptionalism," R167; it's purely a historical phenomenon. There was a baby boom, and the postwar kids grew up with a certain cultural experience and distinctive trajectory (peanut gallery, counterculture, yuppie sellouts, old farts). No one thought of reifying a generation to that extent before, and it doesn't work well for generations since (as opposed to plain old historical experience).

The reality is that every generation thinks they're special.

The boomers thought they were rebels with the whole flower child/hippy thing - then they sold out and turned into the me generation of the 80s.

Gen X thought they rebelled against society (slackers, first gen to not achieve the success of their parents). Xers sold out and conformed to the demands placed upon them by boomers (lack of vacation time, 40 hour work weeks, low wages etc...)

Millennials think they're hard done by compared to others and the first not surpass the financial success of their parents (that honor actually belongs to Xers in terms of being the "first"), but because there are so many millennials, and the rise of the youth orientated culture/media of the early '00s the problems Xers faced are overlooked. Millennials are now nothing special - a decade ago we thought they'd "change things." So far, they haven't. We'll see whether or not they change things or just become sell-outs too.

It's too early to speculate on Gen Z, but I suspect that in about 20 years, younger generations will be complaining about them too.

What's that song that goes, "every generation blames the one before" ??

“You should never be at home. That’s what I tell young people. Home is for seven hours of sleep and that’s it,” Galloway dished in a clip posted by the Journal on TikTok.

“The amount of time you spend at home is inversely correlated to your success professionally and romantically. You need to be out of the house,” he urged.

They do become obsessed en masse with some tv shows and movies. Succession, Stranger Things, Shadow and Bone, Heartstopper, the Spiderman movies with Zendaya in, Dune for Timothee, the new Barbie film.

They are also adept at waging online hate campaigns such as the recent one against Matty Healy and last year's against Olivia Wilde.

They just ignore grammar altogether.

by Anonymousreply 208June 6, 2023 12:03 PM

Grammar is racist.

Distinctive subcultures require socialization and also a type of stability and knowledge of the previous cultures. The lack of socializing along with widening class gap and lack of concern for history and learning the arts is why there hasn't been much development of new styles, musical genres and attitudes. Everything is stuck in a loop.

by Anonymousreply 210June 6, 2023 7:02 PM

Is this strictly an American situation or are other countries experiencing the same Gen -Z socialization problems?

Texting became the millennials primary form of communicating because of their overprotective mothers. Mommy wanted kiddo to have a cellphone so Mommy and kiddo could alway be connected. However, in the 1990s, Mommy worried that cellphones caused brain tumors from being held close to the head. Mommy encouraged kiddos to text and not call. Then when cell phone plans started offering unlimited texting, the kids just started texting everyone for anything.

Cell phones didn't go mainstream until the mid-2000s. So half of millennials who were teenagers in the 90s and early 2000s never even had cell phones. Also in the 2000s people still used landlines and most parents called their kids not text them. So that theory is wrong r212. Texting was popularized by teenagers in the 2000s in fact to keep conservations private from their parents and teachers. Parents actually complained about kids texting rather than calling.

They all need to fuck their cell phones, then marry their phones. They do not seem to need other humans.

My relatives kids are Gen Z, the last time we got together for a family barbecue, the Gen Z kids were at the barbecue with their partners. All of them were looking at their fucking phones all day. None of them put their phones down once, they even took their cells to the bathroom. These people would all be lost without their cells. Attempting a conversation was futile.

Imagine a group of people not being able to converse, to have an actual conversation about something. If you attempt to talk to them, they will keep looking at their cells. NOTHING is that important. None of my relatives kids are doctors on call. They aren't even emergency plumbers!

They are not curious about much. Most seem braindead.

by Anonymousreply 215June 16, 2023 12:31 AM

They can't write with a pen or pencil. Forget about cursive.

by Anonymousreply 216June 16, 2023 12:35 AM

Absolutely nothing

by Anonymousreply 217June 16, 2023 12:42 AM

R211 most of the Western and much of the East Asian world that I've seen, yes.

by Anonymousreply 218June 16, 2023 12:47 AM

Their lack of an ability to have a nuanced conversation - to pick up on nuances , period - is no doubt directly tied to their ingestion of social media.

by Anonymousreply 219June 16, 2023 9:49 AM

R5 has it.

Most DLers mistake Gen Z for millennials, who they think are still in high school.

by Anonymousreply 220June 16, 2023 11:23 AM

R212 is a moron. Except for very wealthy teenagers with permissive parents, kids did not have cell phones in the 90s and they sure weren't texting.

by Anonymousreply 221June 16, 2023 11:26 AM

I was an urban working class teenager in the 90s. No one had cell phones and no one was texting. Some people had beepers.

by Anonymousreply 222June 16, 2023 4:18 PM

[quote]r222 Some people had beepers.

WHORES, primarily!

by Anonymousreply 223June 16, 2023 4:46 PM

[quote] The stereotypical GenZ ids are all middle to upper middle-class.

That's because the people who indulge in generation-labeling are all middle class cunts whose only interaction with young people is in the office and/or twitter.
