Boring Medical Question: high blood pressure
I apologise for the boring question, but I got a follow-up call from my GP today after I had high blood pressure at a med appointment last month.
I need to go in tomorrow for a check-up and if my BP is still high, I will be given a monitor to take away and monitor for a week or two.
I already know that I need to lose weight, but Any other advice from people who have resolved high blood pressure would be greatly appreciated. I’m assuming my current course of action (lying awake at 3am worrying about it) is not helping…

No salt. Lay off processed foods. Meditate. Lose weight.

Tea is good for lowering blood pressure, not just for spilling.

“In research studies, people who were on the DASH diet lowered their blood pressure within 2 weeks.”

I was traveling for work and came home with a horrible sinus infection. Went right to the urgent care and my BP was off the charts. I never had high BP before. I was afraid they wouldn't let me leave. I got a home BP device and it's fine ever since.

Cut your salt intake stat. Get on meds if you need to.

Don't go full steam exercising to lose the weight. You will stroke out. Slowly increase your exercise level. Good luck OP

My BP was averaging 160/90, peaking at 192/110. I cut out all salt and processed food and, after two weeks, it was 116/70. Change your diet and get exercise. Also, start getting massages.

Do the monitor. BP is weird. Mine is real high in the morning then lowers significantly throughout the day. Old, retired here. Doc doesn’t seem too worried about it.

You might laugh but I have used red light therapy and it works (with my BP meds). It is basically a watch like thing where you stick a probe up your nose and it floods your nostril with red light for 30 minutes. It has significantly lowered my bp.

My problem was diet. I ate too much at once, putting my body through so much stress to digest the food. It also made me feel tired and sluggish. Had to start with a detox to deal with the too much salt and sugar in my system, and then had to train myself to eat smaller portions of healthier food (less salt, less sugar, less starch like potatoes, white rice, etc.) throughout the day and adding more physical activity into my daily routine (apparently, jerking off once per day doesn't cut it).

I give myself a gentle blood-letting once a week. With leeches if I have them, otherwise a small incision on the upper thigh (no more than 2 inches) and allowing the blood to flow for between 10 and 15 minutes.

Diet, cutting salt intake, meds, exercise without overdoing it... all sensible recommendations and then bloodletting? Who are you, R16, Donald Trump's quack of a Surgeon General?

There's medication for that, I'm surprised your doctor didn't prescribe some.

R18 Most doctors don’t prescribe BP right away — they’ll monitor you for weeks to make sure you really do have chronic hypertension because if the meds make your BP too low, you might get dizzy or pass out when you’re taking a shower, driving, etc.

I avoided medication in the hope of losing weight. Damaged my kidneys. Don’t be like me. Take the pill now; lose weight later.

Yes lose the weight, I just lost 50 lbs and my BP came down, no more meds for that anyway. My BP was just over 200.
As an added bonus, because I'm a little guy with no muscle, I can now wear big BOYS clothes!!! Do you know the price difference between boys and men's clothing? It's substantial.

Make sure they take your bp reading from both arms. My mother had a significant difference when they switched arms

Your blood pressure varies throughout the day. Take readings several times a day, and take it on both arms. Average all these numbers for one day to get a more accurate picture.

Thanks for all your (mostly helpful!) replies. I saw my doctor, and I’m waiting on results from some blood tests (to test my general health), and then I will be given a blood pressure monitor to take readings at home for a week or two. If my blood pressure is still high then, I will be put on medication to lower it.
My heart rate was pretty high in mu doctor’s surgery. It was at around 100 beats per minute, which is a worry. I had slept badly the night before the appointment. In any case, I’m not trying to mend my ways: less sugar, less stress, more exercise and more sleep.

So not starve yourself. Eat a small breakfast, lunch and dinner but the key is to included snacks. This is where you eat your fruits, nuts and veggies. Of course, plenty of water.
Benefits from the fruit and veggies snacks is it adds water to your stomach which in turn with will help your digestion. You want water to avoid bricking up "down there."

Yeah lose a few pounds, cut back on the salt. Simple things.
I also second hibiscus supplements or tea, they work great. If they put you on meds its not a big deal either. My quality of life improved with the meds, I get way better sleep, fewer headaches, and the weight loss sped up.

Avoid caffeine for at least a few hours before a blood-pressure check—you might notice a difference.

Make them check your BP before you leave the office too.
They marked me as having high blood pressure when I went for a Covid test. Well, yeah, I was nervous! I’m usually on the low side but try and explain that while you’re sweating with fever.
