From what I understand (and based upon actual preserved pages from Web Archive) the site did used to look like a "normal forum."

I have no idea why this format was chosen, but it reminds me of the old RSS feed style from when the internet was still in its infancy.

OP, you're new here. We used to have whole sections to the website. And multiple forums. And Forum Nazis who tried to police everyone on the different forums.

That takes effort and DL stopped being interested in doing that a long time ago.

There used to categories for a short time. The was regular gossip, politics, soaps, health, and Flames and Freaks and others I can't remember. However, the categories didn't last long.

But I'll play along:

Second Verse Same as the First - Topics that DL has been arguing about for 25 years and keeps arguing about like the evil doers who have window screens or put bread in the freezer or who drain pasta.

I would like, "Remember When?" Archived threads like (I'm paraphrasing), "My Neighbor is a Gargoyle", Danny going to NY with his luggage, Michfest threads, "What Things You Did as a Kid That Indicated You Were Gay", our lovely patron saints Brian Nash, Cackle Cackle, Christmas Moose threads, "My Girlfriend is a Demon Azemodius", etc.

I don't know if subforums would be the answer like in the DL days of yore, but tagging threads could be helpful, like how some subreddits do it. The OP of the thread chooses their own tag before posting, but other users would have the chance to vote it as a different tag if the one chosen doesn't fit, and if enough users re-tag it, that's the way it's officially tagged. That way, users can opt to silence entire tags in their feed. It would be a way of self-moderating without having to yell at OPs to move their dumbass thread into the right subcategory, which was obviously tedious as fuck.

OP, how long have you been on DL? It used to have subcategories, like 20 years ago. It was divided into gossip and politics. It was perfect for me. I come to DL for gossip and entertainment discussions. And before you call me Boris, or not caring about politics, neither is true. However, I'm not American. That's why I prefer to talk about tv shows, music, celebs etc. Also, the 4 years during the Trump presidency was hell on earth for me. DLers created 30 new Trump threads a day. Every thread was about Trump 24/7. It became TrumpLounge. It was disgusting. I had to scroll forever to even find any other thread topics. I think a lot of people felt like me during this period and DL lost a lot of frequent users because of it.

OP, there isn't nearly enough posters left on DL for this to be workable. You'd just end up endlessly clicking between the categories because nothing was happening in the one(s) you're interested in. I recall a decade ago, I had something like sixty posters blocked and I barely even noticed the difference. Now I block three posters and the site slows down to a crawl because only five or so posters create most of the threads. Also, as a librarian, don't let me even get into the categorisation issues -- there's a reason thread tags were abandoned after being an experimental feature for a bit.

You just have to train yourself to tune out the threads you aren't interested in, basically.

The entire reason I stumbled upon DL in 1997 or 1998 was because it had a health section and I was concerned about a friend I thought had AIDS symptoms. It also has legislative section, travel, and others I don't remember.

I agree with R29 though I suspect s/he is one the lovable Forum Nazis scolding people for polluting the Gossip or Entertainment forum with politics. Or vice versa.
