Anti-LGBT Parents Cancel Student Play, Students Raise $75k To Put It On Anyway
Carrol High School, Fort Wayne, Indiana: The decision to cancel the play was following a few calls from parents who had issues with aspects of the play such as a non-binary character and [bold]a same-sex couple.[/bold]
The Play, "Marian, Or The True Tale of Robin Hood," published in 2017, comedically explores the idea that Marion herself was also Robin Hood. I'll put inks to the play's info inside.
[quote]“No matter what the reason, we’ve decided to put on the canceled play ourselves, along with some supportive adults in the community," Wasserman said. "We’ve got to fight back against the bullies.” As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign has reached nearly $75,000 in donations. Freeman said she had no idea what to expect when they put the campaign up. She knew it was asking for a lot of money and wasn’t sure if the community would rally behind them. “Seeing that people have been so generous and so wanting to help us out, it’s heartwarming because I just didn’t expect it,” Freeman said. The students have three weeks to rehearse and block the play before they’ll perform at Foellinger Theater. They’re rehearsing nearly every day of the week, after school and on weekends.

Here's the publisher info:
SUMMARY -- A gender-bending, patriarchy-smashing, hilarious new take on the classic tale, adapted for performance by teen actors for family audiences. Robin Hood is (and has always been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a time of trouble?
Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle in this play about selfishness, selflessness, love deferred and the fight. Always the fight. The fight must go on.
HISTORY -- Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood premiered in a production by the Flux Theatre Ensemble in New York City in April 2017 under the direction of Kelly O'Donnell.
