Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges Star in London World Premiere of Brokeback Mountain Beginning on the 10th of May

Jonathan Butterell directs Ashley Robinson's adaptation of the intense gay love story.

The world premiere of Brokeback Mountain—Ashley Robinson's new play with music based on Annie Proulx’s short story—begins previews at London's @sohoplace May 10 prior to an official opening May 18.

Tony and BAFTA nominee Mike Faist (Dear Evan Hansen, West Side Story film) stars as Jack with Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea, Boy Erased) as Ennis. They are joined by Emily Fairn (The Responder) as Alma, Paul Hickey (Waste, Our Class) as Older Ennis, and Martin Marquez (Othello, Husbands & Sons) as Joe/Bill/Jack’s Father.

Set in Wyoming 1963, Brokeback Mountain follows the relationship between Ennis and Jack, who take jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain, and all their certainties of life change forever as they flounder in unexpected emotional waters of increasing depth. This intense tale of an unresistible and hidden love spans 20 years and its tragic consequences.

When is this musical coming to Broadway?

by Anonymousreply 2May 10, 2023 6:09 PM

Alma’s number “Jack Twist? Jack Nasty!” really brought down the house. You could really feel her pain. The score is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 3May 10, 2023 6:11 PM

Touching, heartbreaking story.

by Anonymousreply 4May 10, 2023 7:09 PM

Who is playing Anne Hathaway?

by Anonymousreply 5May 10, 2023 7:10 PM

When I first heard about this I assumed Faist was playing Ennis and Hedges was playing Jack. I find the fact that they’re playing the other roles intriguing.

Stop by the lobby concession during intermission for a refreshing Bud Light.

by Anonymousreply 7May 10, 2023 7:15 PM

Do they sing or is it background music?

by Anonymousreply 8May 10, 2023 7:54 PM

Do they use lube this time?

by Anonymousreply 9May 10, 2023 7:59 PM

Checking fares into Heathrow as I type this...

by Anonymousreply 10May 10, 2023 8:04 PM

Has Hedges come out yet?

No, saying your sexuality is a "fluid" experience doesn't count as coming out.

by Anonymousreply 11May 10, 2023 8:07 PM

Which one is the wife?

by Anonymousreply 12May 10, 2023 8:40 PM

Dear Lord, I want to nail Mike Faist's ass into Sunday. Sweet Jesus, please!

by Anonymousreply 13May 11, 2023 12:52 AM

Is that Tilda Swinton and Matt Damon?

COCK was much better, even though Taron Egerton fainted on stage and tickets cost $500 apiece.

Whose cock was much better?

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2023 3:09 AM

Saw it tonight. Was better than I expected. Faist has a great body which we get to see a lot of. It's 90 minutes no interval. But it goes fast and the background music is excellent. But unfortunately you're going to compare it to the film inevitably and it pales in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 18May 20, 2023 8:46 PM

It's already been an opera, ten years ago.

NY Times: “Meh.”

But this: “ And Faist, so memorably springy and vital as Riff in the Steven Spielberg remake of “West Side Story,” is really wonderful: engaging and likable from the start, only to reach a psychic abyss on the way to Jack’s signature comment to Ennis: “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Pausing to play a mean harmonica, Faist more than justifies a play that can otherwise feel a tad superfluous.

“You may or may not weep at this “Brokeback” — I did not — but just as Jack is to Ennis, I expect Faist’s performance will be impossible to forget.”

That atonal operatic adaptation of Brokeback Mountain is a rare thing in the performance arts…A work for which there is no audience whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 21May 22, 2023 6:16 AM

r16 a story about an ex-gay turning to pussy? Created by a straight man? No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 22May 22, 2023 6:38 AM

John Grant plays the Randy Quaid role and stops the show with, "Stemmin' The Rose"- featuring hottie cowboys in assless chaps.

by Anonymousreply 23May 22, 2023 6:59 AM

R18, when I think of the film Brokeback Mountain, besides, the incredible performances, I mainly think of the beautiful cinematography, the mountains, and all the sheep.

How did those things translate to stage?

by Anonymousreply 24May 22, 2023 7:12 AM

Mad Eddi Reader was on TV yesterday talking about her role in it.

by Anonymousreply 25May 22, 2023 7:54 AM

I thought the end of act one chorus number "Ass To Mouth" was rather tasteless.

I did like their duet Flannelette Size Queens , though.

by Anonymousreply 26May 22, 2023 8:09 AM

Do they show the part where the man goes up inside the man?

by Anonymousreply 27May 22, 2023 8:18 AM

Yes R27

Jack sings "I'm Really Into You" as he sticks his dick up Eniss' ass.

by Anonymousreply 28May 22, 2023 8:21 AM

R21 it worked well for Angels In America. I think that’s the sort of work and script that allows for more experimental and ‘difficult’ music, though. BBM is a folk tale of shorts, thought-provoking but on a microcosmic, Earthbound scale.

Lucas Hedges is so fug that he's hard to look at. Shitty casting.

by Anonymousreply 30May 22, 2023 11:56 AM

Billy Porter plays a new character: Miss Thang, a bordello madame who has to fire most of the female whores due to lack of interest.

by Anonymousreply 31May 22, 2023 2:02 PM

They look a bit more age appropriate. In the novella the characters were just out of high school. Gyllenhaal and Ledger were 25-26 yo. Teenage horny sheep headers make more sense.

by Anonymousreply 32May 22, 2023 2:15 PM

Casting Janice from The Muppet Shows' Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem in the Michelle Williams role was jarring at first, but she won me over when she snarled the "Jack Nasty!" line. I still wonder what Miss Piggy would've done with the role.

by Anonymousreply 33May 22, 2023 2:17 PM

I wonder who'll play the balladeer for Broadway. Mare Winningham, maybe?

by Anonymousreply 34May 22, 2023 7:40 PM

Isn’t BBM passé by now? Was anyone really asking for this adaptation?

by Anonymousreply 35May 23, 2023 1:04 PM

Passé? You mean because it hasn't been trending on Twitter?

by Anonymousreply 36May 23, 2023 9:25 PM

Will it come to the USA?

Taller Jack, interesting

by Anonymousreply 38July 19, 2023 4:54 AM

I enjoyed the, "When Did I Eat Corn" song.

by Anonymousreply 39July 19, 2023 4:57 AM

^ Performed by the ghost of Carol Channing?

by Anonymousreply 40July 19, 2023 4:59 AM

That Carol Channing/corn joke just never gets old.

by Anonymousreply 41July 19, 2023 7:58 AM

BBM? That’s not how acronyms work.

by Anonymousreply 42July 19, 2023 8:42 AM

Is one of the characters now a FTM?
