I came across an old post on a Jessica Lange thread here with an interview where Lauren Bacall lists her favorite working actresses. She noted Jessica Lange as a favorite alongside Annette Bening and Kate Winslet.
Lauren Bacall's favorite contemporary actresses

I'm surprised the Lange hating loon hasn't started a whole flurry of threads to hate on Lauren Bacall now

You thought this is interesting enough to start a thread on but didn’t think to link the article?

Lauren “Short List” Bacall is so…🤌🏻 The quote:
Q: Who’s on your list of current-day great actresses?
A: It’s a short list. I love Jessica Lange, always been a fan of hers. Annette Bening. And Kate Winslet. She’s always been good, even in those early movies in England.

She was pretty much on target!

You left out the last little bit of her answer, '...oh, yes, and also Juliette Binoche, I think she's tremendous!'

by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 15, 2023 9:30 PM |
"It's a short list." The shade! Even in times when movies aren't great, I can always list at least 20 working actresses I think are outstanding.
Jessica Lange can be electrifying, but her work tends to be repetitive and she is bad more often than peers like Meryl Streep and Sissy Spacek are. I find her more interesting as a person than as a performer.
Annette Bening is not one of my favorites. Hilary Swank doesn't get much love these days, but I am happy her truly great work in Boys Don't Cry triumphed over Bening's shrill caricature in American Beauty at the Oscars.
Kate Winslet is the best of this bunch, though her best and riskiest work was in the early part of her career. From her generation, I prefer Samantha Morton and Sally Hawkins.

Interesting that Bacall admits she isn't a great actress.
[quote] I don’t consider myself a great actress.

Christopher Plummer and Jason Robards were on an extended bender when Robards was married to Bacall; she eventually tracked them down, put a pair of Bogart's shoes on the bar in front of Robards and said, "Try to fill these."

I think it's interesting that Lauren Bacall lacks a definitive film role that she's associated with. Bette has Margo Channing, Joan has Mildred Pierce, Kate has Tracy Lord, Vivien has Scarlett O'Hara, and Barbara has Phyllis Dietrichson, but Lauren Bacall has no such role that she's instantly associated with.

What do you call those Hi-Point commercials?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 16, 2023 12:31 AM |
R21, because she was never in a league with any of the actresses you listed and essentially road off the fumes of her films with her deceased husband and his legacy.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 16, 2023 7:30 AM |
that should be rode not road.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 16, 2023 7:31 AM |
R21, "To Have and Have Not", of course.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 16, 2023 7:36 AM |
I feel like her dress and line about whistling are more iconic than her actual role. I can't even remember what her character's name was in that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 16, 2023 8:57 AM |
R21 some of us have more than one iconic role you know. Lorelei, Sugar Kane, The Girl upstairs..
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 16, 2023 10:09 AM |
Bacall was more a personality than an actress.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 16, 2023 11:08 AM |
R25, Bogart’s character called her Slim, but her character’s name was actually Marie.

All shiksas. Typical Betty Perske response.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 16, 2023 11:31 AM |
Surprised she did not mention Cate Blanchett, whom she has praised in other interviews.
Bacall thought Cate nailed Hepburn, her close friend, in “The Aviator”.

my comment above has been erased. Bacall's signature role is Bacall. As Louise Brooks put it, Bogart fell in love with her character in the movie (to have and have not) so she had to play it for the rest of her life

Bacall aged really quickly. She's stunning in her debut but even by her last film with Bogart in the late 40s, she already looks very hard.

Interesting. I always wondered what Kate would have thought about Cate's portrayal of her but I guess Bacall's reaction is the next best thing.
Snubbing Nicole Kidman is another revealing exclusion considering they worked together twice and Bacall's infamous legend statement.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 17, 2023 1:09 AM |
Well, she also snubbed Mimi Rogers, so...
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 17, 2023 1:21 AM |

R41, That interview was from 2009, when Kathleen’s film career was a moot point.

Lauren Bacall had a very contemporary look herself. No faking these great feautures. She could model today.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 17, 2023 6:29 AM |
I never realized she had so many freckles. I guess she used the same makeup Joan did to cover them all up.

Very interesting documentary. surprisingly her own friends saying how intimidating and mean she could be
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 17, 2023 6:36 AM |
Bacall always spoke favorably of Marilyn Monroe, curiously
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 17, 2023 6:39 AM |
R50, And even more favorably about Betty Grable.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 17, 2023 6:41 AM |
Didn't Bacall make a comment about how unprofessional Marilyn was? Or was that Barbara Stanwyck? I know Bette mercilessly teased her on All About Eve to the point of vomiting and we all know that Joan called out Marilyn's exhibitionistic behavior multiple times.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 17, 2023 6:43 AM |
Jonathan Ross is clearly intimidated by her in the beginning of the interview and she's very grand, but as it continues she drops her facade and shows her vulnerability, quite interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 17, 2023 6:53 AM |
Pretty girl.
I've watched a lot of Monroe documentaries and read most of the books, I've never heard any quote of Bacall criticizing Marlilyn. She liked her. Marilyn was still semi functional at that time and nearing the peak of her beauty. Bacall was surprised at how serious and sweet she was. Monroe was insecure and not at all competitive with Bacall.
Lauren did eventually do a brutal takedown about the grossly selfish and wasteful, extravagant drunken lifestyle of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. She found them to be so selfish and ostentatious and tacky. She respected Burton's talent - but Bacall's progressive politics and work ethic ended in her refusing their invitations and publiclly criticizing them.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 17, 2023 7:06 AM |
Liz is another one that Joan went after in the press.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 17, 2023 7:07 AM |
I hate when reporters ask actresses questions like these.
Especially because when they're put on the spot like that, and asked to name the best actors in their estimation, and they leave off Meryl Streep, I assume it's either because they don't even think about Meryl Streep because she's so far ahead of the pack that it goes without saying, or they're just being jealous cunts. At least Katharine Hepburn was direct and let us know that she was just a jealous cunt.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 17, 2023 7:29 AM |
R54, Bacall was very critical of Richard Burton, personally, in a documentary on him years ago.
She was good friends with his first wife, Sybil, and did not appreciate the way Burton treated her, long before Elizabeth came along.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 17, 2023 9:55 AM |
They're not jealous of Streep. They see right through that tacky whore and her hammy acting
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 17, 2023 8:43 PM |
Streep couldn't hold a candle to Vvien in Streetcar or even Marlene and Garbo. The only good Streep performance I've ever seen is , unsurprisingly, the bitch actress she plays in the french lieutenant woman, all the rest is a bag of tricks
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 17, 2023 8:49 PM |
Next the mad Meryl troll is going to claim that Anthony Hopkins is jealous of her as well because he claimed Jessica Lange's Frances was the single greatest performance ever put to screen and Hopkins desperately wanted to work with her in Titus. Meryl certainly wasn't considered for the part of Tamora, Queen of the Goths.
And besides Lange, Hopkins said his favorite actress to ever work with is Emma Thompson. Hopkins wouldn't even peer in the direction of the talentless Streep.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 17, 2023 9:10 PM |
Bacall most certainly did criticize LIZ and DICK. She was disgusted by their lifestyle. She criticized Elizabeth Taylor most especially. Liz WAS a pig. In every possible way. Without an ounce of wit to redeem her.

Lipstick on a pig, is still Liz Taylor.

Meryl is the craftiest actress in Hollywood. She admitted herself that her daughters remarked that she was only playing herself in PRADA
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 18, 2023 11:14 PM |
This is the same bitch who pretends to be besties with Glenn while denying her Oscar success and also backstabbed her other bestie Emma Thompson by making a speech about how Walt DIsney was anti-semitic, racist, and sexist (all of which has been disproven countless times by the blacks, Jews, and women who worked with him) so that Saving Mr. Banks would lose all momentum for awards and cost Emma Thompson an Oscar nomination. Then this bitch has the gall to call up Emma and act shocked that Emma didn't get nominated when she single-handedly set in motion the events to cause that to happen. Meryl is a grudge-holding psychopath who still hasn't forgiven Emma for replacing her in The Remains of the Day (as if Sir Anthony Hopkins would even spit on Meryl).
There's a reason Jessica keeps her distance from Meryl. She is very intuitive and knows that she would be #1 on Meryl's grudge list for winning the roles in King Kong and Sweet Dreams over her.

Agreed. I had a thread on which actress would likely be Oscar nominated next year and even though that hack Meryl isn't even a contender, her freaky fanatic had to disrupt the entire thread to make it all about her. What a shame to the great actresses of the industry, who like in Hollywood, aren't given their dues because of one self-obsessed woman.
