Hair styling products for coarse, curly hair
Can someone recommend something that will smooth and soften my curls, without leaving residue that's sticky or greasy when dry?
I wish they sold sample kits where you get a one-time use packet of product for dozens of products so you can see what works. Buying regular size products when you don't know if it will work is too expensive.

I do what my hairdresser tells me to do. I'd suggest the same to you, OP.

A good conditioner and a gentle blow-dry is all I need for my luscious locks, OP - Sometimes I add just a fingertip of wax, but, like you, I don't like the feeling of product in my hair. It feels nice to be run my hand through my hair, I don't want it to sit like a greasy hat on top of my head.

What's your curl type, OP?

Let's hope you're diffusing, Dutchie.

R4 I never really took a liking to that big, trumpet-like thing. I bought a very gentle blow dryer, instead, and I keep it at an arm's length

Use very little btw and right after you brush your hair from wet. A little goes a long way

Too bad there's no other place online where you can ask this question.

Products you'll want to invest in: a microfiber towel, a diffuser, a mousse made for curly hair (alcohol and silicone free), and either a gel or curl cream made for curly hair (also alcohol and silicone free), depending on how tight and dry your curls are. If you have 3b-4c curls, make sure the curl cream you use is very moisturizing. You'll want to make sure your shampoo and conditioner are sulfate, silicone, and alcohol free as well. They don't have to be specifically made for curly hair, but they have to be without these three ingredients, which both dry out and weigh down curls.
When you get out of the shower and your hair is still dripping wet, apply the mouse and scrunch into your hair, then the gel or cream, then wrap up in the microfiber towel. The order of products should be lightest to heaviest: 1) mousse, 2) gel, 3) curl cream. Use half a handful of mousse, and a penny size of both gel and/or cream. After about 10-minutes, dry out the rest of the hair with a diffuser attached to a hairdryer on the warm setting by just pressing it into your curls. Keep scrunching your hair with your hands as you diffuse to get out any crunch (though there shouldn't be much of any if you apply your products onto dripping wet hair).

I have coarse, wavy hair. This is what I do. When washing hair, I use a generous amount of conditioner and really work it into my hair. Detangle while conditioner is in your hair, if necessary. Let the conditioner soak in while I scrub down the rest of my body.
Then: get under the shower and rinse out the conditioner, but not too thoroughly.
Comb or brush hair gently while it's wet. Thereafter, leave it alone. Don't comb or brush hair after it's dry.
