Thanks, OP, for the new thread.

You can never count Nadal out, but if he does play RG, I don't think he'll win it this year. I'll wait to see how Djokovic does in Rome before seeing what his chances are at RG. It would be so great, though, if one of the younger players won his first RG, or maybe even his first Slam. I'd love to see Alcaraz win it.

Struff really showed how to upset Alcaraz's rhythm. I wonder how many players could sustain that type of go-for-broke style, though? I thought Courier made a good observation during the match that Struff was Sampras-like in his return games. He just went for it and got on top of the point right away. Alcaraz figured it out, though, and started to vary his service spots rather than hitting the kicker to Struff's backhand, which he was hammering back on the return. That was a tense match, but I loved how Alcaraz figured it out in the end.

Looking forward to Rome and Carlos taking #1 back!

Struff-Alcaraz is a great example of how match-ups matter. Struff bothers Alcaraz and takes him out of his natural game and strategy.

R3, many eons ago, when Feliciano and his wife divorced, rumor had it that one of the reasons she wanted out was because his sexual demands had become unbearable, including wanting three-ways with another man.

Rublev is adorable.

by Anonymousreply 8May 9, 2023 5:29 PM

Continuing the Verdasco talk from the last thread:

I had the pleasure of sitting in a steam room with him nearly 15 years ago. He was very pleasant, and ridiculously handsome, but the humor of the conversation emanated from the fact that he felt "leered at" or "hit on" by every guy in the locker room (and apparently didn't notice me taking his body in). I don't think he's the brightest or self-aware.

by Anonymousreply 9May 9, 2023 5:50 PM

I watched Rublev in an interview and really liked him. And somewhere I read that he was grateful for the friendly card because you know what country he's from. Make a self-denigrating joke of it (or Russia-denigrating)

Maybe he could talk Putin into behaving?

by Anonymousreply 10May 9, 2023 6:18 PM

* card should have been crowd - and MADE a self-denigrating joke... My brain hurts, y'all....

by Anonymousreply 11May 9, 2023 6:19 PM

Alcaraz is a total hottie, I'm going to be rooting for him for years to come.

by Anonymousreply 12May 9, 2023 6:22 PM

It is the beginning of the end for Novaxx

by Anonymousreply 13May 9, 2023 6:30 PM

Fingers crossed more losses for Iga

by Anonymousreply 14May 9, 2023 6:31 PM

Why is Sakaari's chest area so wide? Is it a he?

by Anonymousreply 15May 9, 2023 6:33 PM

Carlos is the best young player I’ve seen in my lifetime which goes way back- huge talent and the mind of a champion. He’s electric to watch. Lopez is not gay- he’s married now with kids I think and if you followed him over his career you’d know he was a serial babe magnet: impossibly beautiful women watching his matches etc. great fun to watch due to an all court game and in person he’s impossibly gorgeous: Olive skin, green eyes, lithe muscular upper body with legs and ass of death below.

Nadal also had a pretty explosive start to his career.

I remember the year he won his first RG. I was at the gym during the final, and people were gathering around the TV, drawn by all the buzz about this prodigy, who’d been pegged for greater but never so soon. They all wanted to drink the moment in.

by Anonymousreply 20May 9, 2023 9:29 PM

Heh I find Carlos hot too, skin notwithstanding. He has a contagious grin.

by Anonymousreply 21May 9, 2023 9:33 PM

His skin is a turn off, but his body is undeniable.

by Anonymousreply 22May 9, 2023 9:42 PM

Do we believe the rumor that Novaxx had a stroke? I watched the Boris Becker documentary last weekend and they interview Djokovic. His left eye is def drooping.

by Anonymousreply 23May 9, 2023 9:54 PM

R9 About 10 years ago a sports photographer told me that he was involved with a male, African flight attendant and they'd hook up whenever paths crossed.

by Anonymousreply 24May 9, 2023 9:57 PM

I believe to this day that Feli and Nando were fucking.

by Anonymousreply 25May 9, 2023 10:02 PM

R23, he’s had that eye droop for years.

by Anonymousreply 26May 9, 2023 10:58 PM

Lopez had a messy divorce a few years ago.

His wife alleged he slept with hundreds of women. He also asked for threesomes and she implied it wasn't always male-female-female.

by Anonymousreply 27May 10, 2023 12:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 29May 10, 2023 1:40 AM

Yeah, Lopez didn’t set the world on fire as tournament director.

by Anonymousreply 30May 10, 2023 1:42 AM

R12 I thought I was the only one finding him hot. He is kinda ugly hot, if that makes sense. I think he has pretty eyes and an adorable smile. He looks better in motion. He looks horrible in pics, but he's very cute when I watch him play.

by Anonymousreply 31May 10, 2023 5:07 AM

Weather forecast for Rome this week is terrible. Do they not have a roof? Will they be able to play at all? And people make fun of the Madrid event for being a high altitude and terribly run. At least it didn't rain during the Madrid Open. Madrid actually gets very little rain. It's usually sunny and warm, unlike Rome where it's rain and 17 degrees C.

by Anonymousreply 32May 10, 2023 9:47 AM

I think Carlos is cute, too. He’ll be a knockout by his mid 20s, especially if he gets his teeth fixed.

by Anonymousreply 33May 10, 2023 9:48 AM

Garin and Cachin are playing in Rome right now. Garib is beautiful but I only have eyes for cachin. Dreamy.

Gasquet broke his racket😂

by Anonymousreply 40May 10, 2023 2:38 PM

Cachín lost. Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 41May 10, 2023 3:50 PM

As much as my heart breaks for Pedro, I console myself with the dream of having my head planted firmly between Garin's quads.

Garin could now be set for a good run - Tommy, who's still struggling on clay - in the next round, and the BVD or Djere in the following round - both of whom are Certified Headcases under pressure.

by Anonymousreply 42May 10, 2023 3:56 PM

Great to see comely newbie Fils make it through to the second round, where he'll face uncomely droob Rune.

by Anonymousreply 43May 10, 2023 5:31 PM

Rune and Mouratoglou have parted ways after six months. Does that mean Help is returning?

by Anonymousreply 44May 10, 2023 5:50 PM

R43 it will be an interesting match up, for sure.

I don't think, at this point, Fils has got the consistency to mount a real challenge to The Brat; but he's pretty 'in your face' so I can imagine that he might get under Rune's skin.

by Anonymousreply 45May 10, 2023 5:52 PM

All of those I root for have lost today. Why are South Americans so bad on European clay? You'd think they would win as they are all clay court specialists, yet they all lose in Europe. It's so weird.

by Anonymousreply 46May 10, 2023 5:58 PM

R43 Noooo, I was rooting for Cerundolo :(

by Anonymousreply 47May 10, 2023 5:58 PM

R41 I root for the hotties and they all lost today, with the exception of cutie Garin. Reminds me of someone on MTF saying Garin was so cute, a real natural beauty. Then someone replied that he's had a nose job. I nearly died laughing. That was so funny😂

by Anonymousreply 48May 10, 2023 6:01 PM

Murray complaining to the umpire about a ball that was called in, it turned out he was actually right and the umpire wrong because the ball was out.

by Anonymousreply 49May 10, 2023 6:10 PM

This first set has lasted forever. Murray and Fognini have both had their chances. Not much separating the two, but Murray has missed the important points. I think Fognini is playing slightly better due to home court advantage.

by Anonymousreply 59May 10, 2023 7:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 61May 10, 2023 7:46 PM
Fran Cerundolo's bulge in this pic... HUGE

I remember the queen here SCREAMING how huge the bulge was in Van der Zandschulp was when someone noted a couple of hours later of course he has a bulge as he still had the ball for a second serve in his pocket. I can't fathom how sobering the experience must have been for our poor old patsy when he realized he had fapped three times to a tennis ball in a pocket.

Rome is taking a page out of Madrid's book and holding the women's matches in the wee hours in empty stadiums.

by Anonymousreply 66May 11, 2023 1:37 AM

They are taking away my hometown Cincy Western & Southern Open and moving it to Charlotte NC!! We suspected for years Europe was trying to poach the event, so this sucks even more. F*ck Charlotte!! The event is the only Midwest stop, and this crazy expanding to 2 weeks, 128 player draws and more Pickleball courts(!!) didn't sway the new owners. I used to work at Kings Island in high school and loving/playing tennis and having them construct the site for what was then the ATP Championship was almost too good to be true. It didn't start getting great draws until the insisted on all the ATP playing (Borg never did). I even got to play on those courts for some interclub league the USTA had in the 80's. Just totally bummed out by this!!

by Anonymousreply 67May 11, 2023 10:46 AM

Is this where we talk about Western & Southern Open?

by Anonymousreply 68May 11, 2023 1:12 PM

I read an article and they still have to build, and I believe approve, the sports complex where the tennis center would be R67. I think it is far from a done deal.

by Anonymousreply 69May 11, 2023 1:17 PM

Madrid has apologised for not allowing the women to speak after the doubles final. Still no apology for the cake fiasco.

by Anonymousreply 70May 11, 2023 1:55 PM

Madrid is an awful tournament. It has always been. A clay court tournament at that altitude? Why?

by Anonymousreply 71May 11, 2023 1:57 PM

The UGOAT and Ruusuvuori in a right old 3rd set ding-dong. It's break-a-palooza!

Proper clay court match between Lil Diego and Arnaldi. Some great long rallies. Real cat and mouse stuff.

by Anonymousreply 80May 11, 2023 9:28 PM

I only liked Madrid when it was played on Blue Clay. At least that lecheros man isn't the owner of the tournament anymore.

Strange that the Cinci tournament is moving to Charlotte because they just remodeled that monstorous and ugly center court in Cinci.

by Anonymousreply 86May 11, 2023 11:05 PM

R86 I loved the blue clay year because both Nadal and Djokovic threw hissy fits threatening to boycott unless the tournament returned to "real red clay" the next year. Both complained they couldn't move well on it.

Sabalenka does not do well on slow clay. That's why she has won Madrid since the altitude makes it faster. I don't think she'll get past the QF at RG

by Anonymousreply 90May 12, 2023 9:40 AM

He arrived at the court to train yesterday in a pink tracksuit. People called him gay (yawn). He is Spanish. They don't give a shit about fragile masculinity there. Spain is the most gay friendly country on earth. Anyway, it was fun to see the Alcaraz mania, fans yelling his name and following him everywhere. Damn, he is really popular. The hype is real.

by Anonymousreply 91May 12, 2023 9:51 AM

I wish Nadal had played in Madrid. I'm wondering how the treatment of both he and Alcaraz would have been. Legend vs. the new it-boy both Spanish.

I hope Etcheverry at least makes Djokovic work today

by Anonymousreply 92May 12, 2023 10:14 AM

…treatment of both HIM and Alcaraz… please.

I think they’d be treated fairly equally.

Carlos does seem to be in love with Juan Carlos, his coach, so maybe he is on our team.

by Anonymousreply 96May 12, 2023 10:30 AM

What it is to be DL fave Legz Rune

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 98May 12, 2023 10:53 AM

R96 I literally said that in the Carlos thread. They seem very close, too close sometimes. It really does make me wonder. Carlos seems in love with his coach, but the coach also cried when Carlos won, so it seems like they both love each other. Whethet that is a platonic love or something more, who knows.

by Anonymousreply 99May 12, 2023 11:07 AM

I appreciate their relationship. Carlos entrusted JC to help him maximize his potential and he did right by him by all accounts thus far.

Coaches have to deal with not just the strokes but the mental aspects. There is a vulnerability to that (which is why so many male coaches have been able to prey on their subjects).

I imagine that journey has built quite a bond. I don’t think JC is abusing that and I hope not because it’s nice to see.

(Then you have Emma who discards her coaches like her boyfriend’s cum on a Kleenex.)

by Anonymousreply 100May 12, 2023 11:11 AM

Alcaraz won't win Rome. He will lose to Sinner.

by Anonymousreply 101May 12, 2023 11:19 AM

I think Alcaraz is only playing Rome for the number one position. He did not play last year and just by stepping on the court he makes it to number one.

by Anonymousreply 102May 12, 2023 11:28 AM

Good, r102. Anything to not have to see the name Djokovic next to the number 1.

by Anonymousreply 103May 12, 2023 11:32 AM

Nadal out of RG?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 104May 12, 2023 11:32 AM

R102 His draw is not terrible per se, but he has been playing a lot lately. The earlier rounds in Rome should be farily easy wins, but in this tournament both Djokovic and Sinner are back. That's why QF/SF/F will be very hard. I don't trust Alcaraz enough to win against those, not with the amount of matches he has played lately. Also, Sinner had the mental advantage against Alcaraz now. And Alcaraz is not consistent enough. He still plays horrible then good then horrible. I'd say Sinner and Djokovic are both more consistent. And I'm an Alcaraz fan.

by Anonymousreply 105May 12, 2023 11:34 AM

R104. I read that the video is from a couple of days ago and that he practiced normally the following day. But, let's face it, the writing is on the wall.

by Anonymousreply 106May 12, 2023 11:35 AM

R106 Both he and Djokovic should retire. Nadal has declined rapidly. He is a shadow of his former self. Djokovic has also declined, though not as much as Nadal. It's possible he can play a couple of more years and still be top 10. Nadal on the other hand is injury prone, old and already down to like #35 in the world.

by Anonymousreply 107May 12, 2023 11:41 AM

R98, if by "fave", you mean reviled and abhorred, then you're spot on.

by Anonymousreply 108May 12, 2023 2:17 PM

Djokovic should retire? He has won Wimbledon, Season Ending & Aussie Open and climbed back to no. 1 WITHOUT Wimbledon points. I get you Djoko haters feel the way you do, but this guy comes to play, and he's determined to get one more slam than I'm Always Injured Rafa. And he will.
Is it too early to give up on Jabeur?

I was for a long time on Ons team, but since her involvement with the PTPA became evident, I have soured on her. It shows bad judgment to be aligned with an organization head by Djokovic and Popsicle. Had it not been for that I’d have continued supporting her even through struggles in her game.

by Anonymousreply 112May 12, 2023 4:08 PM

A day of shock-ettes so far: Felix, Demon, and now Karen all going out to much lower-ranked players.

by Anonymousreply 113May 12, 2023 4:13 PM

If Nadal misses Roland Garros, he'll lose 2000 points. After Rome, he'll be at 2445 points. If he loses those 2000 points, he'll drop out of the Top 100. No doubt that's why Nadal and his team are still trying to get to RG.

I agree, R109. No way should Djokovic retire. He's going to keep going to try to surpass Nadal on the all-time Slam winner list. I think Nadal wants to keep going to add to his Slam total as well. Barring injury or the young guns finally pushing the remaining Big 2 out of the Slam winner's circle, I think Djokovic has the best shot to end up with the most Slams ever.

by Anonymousreply 114May 12, 2023 4:18 PM

I want Novak to keep going. And keep failing as his body falls apart and the young guns just get stronger. It'll destroy him mentally.

MUAHAHAHA....

I don't know what's wrong politically with so many American tennis players. With the exception of two of them (that I can think of), you're bound to bump into them at Mar-a-Lago which means they paid a $250,000 for the initiation fee with $14,000 annual fee on top of that. Disgusting. And you know Brooksby's mom paid the premium price just so that she gets a pussy grab from her Cheetos Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 127May 12, 2023 6:50 PM

R127, who are the exceptions you’re aware of? Is Daddy Fritz one of them?

by Anonymousreply 128May 12, 2023 6:53 PM

R105, you may be an Alcaraz fan but I don’t think you know much about tennis. Sinner is a difficult match up for Carlos. However their recent records against the rest of the tour tell the story- Sinner also does not have as complete a game as Carlos- almost no one does except the big three and none of them as early.

by Anonymousreply 129May 12, 2023 7:01 PM

No the two American tennis players that I know for sure are not MAGA are Martina Navratilova and Reilly Opelka. And hopefully the Williams sisters but they don't vote, because religion. I know Chrissie was a life-long republican but she's ferociously Never Trump so she gets a pass from me and has likely changed her affiliation since 2016. She and Trump are virtually neighbors but at least she won't ever be seen at Mar-a-Lago.

R105 People keep repeating again and again that Sinner has Alcaraz's number but the truth is their h2h is just 3-3. Sinner is an amazing player when he is on, and his game is naturally difficult to Carlos, but even with that he was able to win half of the matches and he has a clear mental and physical advantage over Jannik.

And he is clearly more consistent than Sinner, which is pretty obvious when he will be number one in two weeks and Sinner is number 8. Alcaraz can be inconsistent but he is resilient and he is able to win when he is not playing well, that s the reason why his rise was so fast

by Anonymousreply 138May 12, 2023 8:25 PM

WTF happened in the Andreescu match? 6-0, 6-1? Does she suck on clay or what?

by Anonymousreply 139May 12, 2023 8:27 PM

Yes, she sucks on clay but i don't understand why because her game seems perfect for clay

Rune looks pretty gay in those young pictures

R137 Bitch bageled russian , she had to, poles in awe, why she didnt do it in madrid?

by Anonymousreply 142May 12, 2023 8:54 PM

Because Madrid did not suit her game as well as Rome.

People talked about Sabalenka and Rybakina, but in Rome they need (well Elena, because Aryna is already out) to be very inspired to have a chance against Iga

by Anonymousreply 143May 12, 2023 8:57 PM

Rybakina through to the next round, where she will face Kalinskaya (who just beat her in Madrid). Battle of the Babes.

by Anonymousreply 147May 12, 2023 9:08 PM

No, she is pretty good at anything (she says she sucks at grass but she won Wimbledon jr so it's a question of time to do well at Wimbledon) too, but there are conditions that suit her better than others.

Sabalenka is specially vulnerable in slow courts even she can play well on clay

Iga needs to improve in the mental strenght, specially when the match doesn't go her way but she is the most consistent number one in ages

by Anonymousreply 148May 12, 2023 9:09 PM

I like Shelton, he seems to enjoy play when he is on court, but he needs to improve a lot his game on clay. He is pretty bad right now

Legz breezes through 3 and 3

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 150May 12, 2023 9:10 PM

Iga struggles often on fast surfaces when opponents can rush her. She needs time to set up her shots. That Wimbledon jr. should have an asterisk because obviously she was more talented compared to many other young players but grass doesn't suit her at all. We shall see if she makes adjustments to win that one.

by Anonymousreply 151May 12, 2023 9:12 PM

R148 I didnt say she sucks everywhere else, man. She is always naggin she doesnt get it easy or something it is not her way like balls at AO . She even wrote to them to change the balls. lol

by Anonymousreply 152May 12, 2023 9:14 PM

Rune had a lot of problems with grass since junior, i suppose grass is a surface when some players need a lot to adapt while others are natural

R166 Most of the South American players are hot. I'm shocked they're all doing so badly though. Isn't clay supposed to be their favorite surface? Then why do they all suck on European clay? Most of the South American players have been eliminated already.

Gaudio and Guillermo Coria were the last clay court specialist top players from South America

Del Potro and Nalbandian were at their best on hardcourts though from time to time got great results on all surfaces

Garin looked to be heading in the direction of a new top player clay specialist but the last 2 years he slumped/stalled. Plus in an early interview he actually said hardcourts were his favorite

Alcaraz seems to struggle against players who hit to ball early, flat and hard like Ruusuuvuori and Sinner (that doesn't mean he doens't find a way to win). Medvedev on clay should be no rival for Carlos

by Anonymousreply 260May 14, 2023 5:58 PM

Coco looked great against Putinseva, I wonder what went wrong? Forehand and serve?? Again, Coco tell her fat father to go home.

by Anonymousreply 261May 14, 2023 6:10 PM

Goffin was always cute and Zverev has always looked like a tall rat.

Although to a lesser degree than the Berrettini brothers, A. Zverev and M. Zverev don't resemble each other much.

by Anonymousreply 265May 14, 2023 7:51 PM

Rune said he wants to win a GS this year. The guy doesn't know what modesty means but at least he is clear.

And he has a commitment to the sport that a lot of other players lack

I think he'll embrace being the villain of the circuit (something Nole never wanted)

by Anonymousreply 266May 14, 2023 7:59 PM

Mischa and Sascha have the same deep set eyes. They have the same teeth, too. It's just their different hair colors and styles make them look diferent. Sascha also has smaller, pointier facial features.

Any signs that Rune is gay? Besides wearing make up and being ultra close with his domineering stage mother.

by Anonymousreply 271May 14, 2023 9:17 PM

Among the many reasons I can't stand watching Rune: he has more tics than Rafa, even on Nadal's absolute worst OCD day. Does Holger have Tourette Syndrome?

by Anonymousreply 272May 14, 2023 9:19 PM

You're Ruud to mention Rafa's OCD, you should be Runed.

I don't know if the female commentator on TC was trying to be funny when she said the crowd was standing for Iga at match point, but the stadium was less than half filled, and not one person was standing. Iga is a nice person, I'm sure, but the women don't have many players who can get people excited. Serena and Venus are gone, Coco is floundering, Garcia is circling the drain from pressure. Sabalenka is a riot, She Hulk wants to be a diva, and embraces it. The Ova Army is sleep inducing. Women's tennis needs something.

by Anonymousreply 290May 15, 2023 9:05 AM

I've never seen Marzipan play. Looking forward to that match.

Kinda surprised JJ Wolf got by Hubie, but Hubie is a hard-court specialist, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 291May 15, 2023 10:34 AM

R290 who are/ is " ova"? Also aren't sablenka and she Hulk the same person?

To add to your point, the commentators get on my last fucking nerve when Iga plays. Their comments sound like Iga is the best female player to ever play the game of tennis in the history of the womens game. I just can't stand it.I know women's Tennis just couldn't wait to replace the Willaims sisters with a white face but sheesh.. they need to relax, Iga is not there yet.

I rather a Sabkenka or Rybakina to replace the Williams sisters .I watch iga play to see the opponents win. I turn her matches off when she's winning. Too bad Ash Barty retired

by Anonymousreply 292May 15, 2023 11:01 AM

Sabs is SHE HULK, and I was saying she loves being a Diva, and she's funny. I wish she served and volleyed, she would make a mess of Iga then. Jabeour is fun, too, when she's healthy. Emma Radacanu has a diva attitude, but no work ethic. Talk about a one trick pony. Garcia could do it, too if she gets inspired at the French, but I fear the Mauresmo Syndrome for her there.

by Anonymousreply 293May 15, 2023 11:49 AM

Alcaraz is tanking on purpose so he gets more rest before RG. NID.

by Anonymousreply 294May 15, 2023 11:59 AM

^I agree. He's already sewn up the number one spot.

by Anonymousreply 295May 15, 2023 12:29 PM

Marzipan, bishes! Takes out Carlitos in straights.

Porna next for him.

by Anonymousreply 296May 15, 2023 1:16 PM

Exactly as it looked, so much for wanting to play Novakk in the final.

by Anonymousreply 297May 15, 2023 1:20 PM

I couldn't watch the match. Was it obvious he was tanking or just assuming cause he looked like he wasn't giving much effort?

by Anonymousreply 298May 15, 2023 1:23 PM

No ,he wasnt tanking, dont believe it , hungarian played amazing

by Anonymousreply 299May 15, 2023 1:27 PM

Obviously losing to a qualifier isn't great but Alcaraz has played a lot of tennis lately. This will give him plenty of needed rest before the French Open.

by Anonymousreply 300May 15, 2023 1:29 PM

R299 Maybe not on purpose, but he looked slow both mentally and physically. He has played A LOT of tennis lately. No way would he lose to a journeyman otherwise. He was not himself at all. Anyways, as sad as this is to me as a fan, it's really a blessing in disguise. He will get plenty of rest before Roland Garros and he needs it. He has secured #1 anyway.

by Anonymousreply 301May 15, 2023 1:43 PM

R300 Exactly. Maybe he didn't tank on purpose, but it's clear to me that he was tired, at the same time the journeyman was playing out of his mind. Alcaraz had a bad day. Easy as that. I'm not too worried. It's a blessing in disguise because he has played a lot lately. He can finally get some rest now, and train. He needs it. However, if this continues, then yes, we can get worried. But one bad match is not proof of anything one way or another. We will see how he fares in Roland Garros.

by Anonymousreply 302May 15, 2023 1:48 PM

I think Alcaraz has a lot to learn yet. He is not a complete player, he lacks consistency. Sometimes he needs a better gameplan, especially on his "off" days. He needs to win even if he plays bad and his opponent plays well. That is what is missing sometimes. He is still so young though. He needs more experience. I think the consistency will improve with age, as will his tennis iq, so that he manages to win even on bad days.

by Anonymousreply 303May 15, 2023 1:50 PM

R301 I think he looked ok, he didnt looked tired at all, especially in first set ,what are you talking about? Maroszan's shots were huge, just like alcaras's. He didnt expect that. He looked worse mentally in tie break ,in the end yes, because he couldn handle hungarian's name. I would say he looked nervous in second set..stop making excuses

by Anonymousreply 304May 15, 2023 1:56 PM

The same was with Emil in Madrit. He played good so alcaraz looked against him like pussy. Emil started shitted his pants ,then Carlitos suddenly plays good

by Anonymousreply 308May 15, 2023 2:58 PM

The Alcaraz fans have quickly learned how to excuse and rationalize his losses -- he tanked; he's exhausted; it just wasn't his day. Another way Alcaraz is just like Nadal: It's never because he was simply outplayed by his opponent.

Love, love, Rublev

by Anonymousreply 324May 15, 2023 10:32 PM

Me too. I'd been looking for a favorite - bored to death of Djoko and Rafa. Love that Rublev's spoken out against the Ukraine War, despite it probably being risky to do so. And his interviews are charming, despite the iffy English. Very self-deprecating and funny.

I hope he lives somewhere other than his hometown Moscow - indeed, outside of Russia. I'd be interested if any of the big Russian tennis stars still live there.

by Anonymousreply 325May 15, 2023 10:42 PM

He is not outspoken against the war. He wrote he supports peace on a camera lens once a year ago - that was it!

by Anonymousreply 326May 15, 2023 10:43 PM

Well, I thought he did. I did find this:

After beating Alexander Zverev at the 2023 Dubai Championships, Rublev expressed his concern for the innocent citizens who are suffering and dying as a result of the conflict. Rublev spoke against the war also in the past and he continues to promote peace also now

"You cannot act like nothing happened because it's horrible. Like I was saying all the time, it's crazy that so many just normal citizens suffering, dying. Is just not easy."

by Anonymousreply 327May 15, 2023 10:52 PM

R327, Rublev has twice commented on the war. (This article restates what your post says, but adds the earlier camera-writing). You can say it’s pretty tame stuff, but he and his family live in Moscow.

It's not surprising both Alcaraz and Sinner lost. These guys on the tour are all good. If a big hitter is landing his shots, he can beat anyone on any given day. Marozsan was both hitting the ball well and feathering drop shots over the net that were even better than Alcaraz's. Every top player is vulnerable to these types, although I bet Marozsan can't sustain that level match after match.

I haven't had time to check out the Sinner match. How'd he play?

by Anonymousreply 349May 16, 2023 5:19 PM

Sinner ran out of steam in the final set. Looked like he lacks match fitness after his illness. Cerundolo definitely won it, tho - his forehand was lethal all match.

All the things that he did are permitted, but not correct. That's not how you should behave. He is a nice guy, I don't know why he does that on court?"[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 353May 16, 2023 5:41 PM

I'm happy for Cerundolo. Argentina too. The country hasn't done well on the tour since Delpo retired. Cerundolo a true clay courter. I feel like Sinner is better on hard courts. Cerundolo was simply the better player today. I wouldn't call this a big upset. Cerundolo is a solid player, especially on clay. Alcaraz losing to a journeyman on his best surface is much worse imo and I say this as an Alcaraz fan.

by Anonymousreply 354May 16, 2023 5:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 357May 16, 2023 5:49 PM

Alcaraz needs to learn to start the matches more concentrated. When you play against a lower ranked player you should never give him an early advantage or maybe he'll believe it's possible to surprise (just watch Nadal's matches at RG, in almost all the matches from the last seasons he started every match ahead on the score).

Anyway, it seems that Marozsan is able to play at a very good level and he is winning right now against Coric

by Anonymousreply 378May 17, 2023 11:34 AM

Oh, my.

Rune–Djokovic 6–2.

by Anonymousreply 379May 17, 2023 11:53 AM

The only time I'd ever want Rune to win would be against Djokovic and maybe Kyrgios (who's withdrawn from RG).

Novaxx having a meltdown in the third set trailing 0-4 and insisting that the umpire remove court spectators. In Rome, as if.

by Anonymousreply 380May 17, 2023 2:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 381May 17, 2023 2:23 PM

So, apparently Tsitsipas is not popular with the other players. Was it something that we already knew? Was there a sense of that? I know the source is Kyrgios but Kyrgios is not infamous for telling BS, he's infamous for saying out loud things that are better left unsaid. The general feeling I get is that yes Tsitsipas can be quite haughty out there and dismissive in his post-match pressers (with such utterances as "he won with the few tools that he has") but apparently he carries that attitude into the locker room as well.

Rafa has announced a press conference for tomorrow. The R word?

Or just that he's skipping the French Open and maybe Wimbledon?

by Anonymousreply 390May 17, 2023 5:57 PM

Word is Rafa plans to play the FO. He practiced with no pain today.

R390 it has to be retirement.

I'm seriously losing it. Knew the day was coming. But still.

by Anonymousreply 393May 17, 2023 6:09 PM

Perhaps he'll announce he'll retire after RG?

by Anonymousreply 394May 17, 2023 6:55 PM

Reports are saying he's not playing RG.

"If NoVaxxx falls here that's three tournaments on the bounce he's gone out before even getting a sniff of reaching the Final. He's a few years older now than he was during his last 'lean period'.

Could this be the start of the progressive decline that hits all players in the end?"

It's already started. It's probably not enough at this point to prevent him from winning Slams, but if he does, it will be harder than it was. Also, with men, there's the whole other dynamic of best of 5 sets at Slams - that favors more mature players who understand the ups and downs. Plus, it's just harder for an upstart to stay hot over the course of five sets. That along with the occasion and pressure of Slams makes it hard to predict who can beat or almost beat Novak based on who beat or almost beat him in a best of 3 set match. Still, I think the decline has begun.

There as a time when most tour finals for men were best of five sets - after playing best of 3 for all the other rounds.

Something wrong with what I said R406?

by Anonymousreply 407May 17, 2023 10:20 PM

Iga retires during the third set.

by Anonymousreply 408May 17, 2023 11:07 PM

Hoe so she’s good for RG.

by Anonymousreply 409May 17, 2023 11:14 PM

What is going on with Novaxx? Is it just old age and the young guns are out playing him? Or is he just ill? His reaction almost make it appears like something is medically wrong? Is it the lean diet?

by Anonymousreply 410May 18, 2023 1:54 AM

Yes, per Marca, he will not play RG.

Why haven't we heard anything about Big Jack D and why isn't making out with or dear Tommy right now?

by Anonymousreply 414May 18, 2023 6:53 AM

Big Jack D is scheduled to play on the grass at Surbiton. Not sure whether he's skipping the French. It does concern me that he can't seem to do more than two tournaments in succession without an injury. Whether it's a growth thing, I don't know, but it does seem to be impacting him more than other players of the same age.

r415, some players are more prone to injuries than others. Del Potro is another example, and, from the Olden Times there was Mecir who was one of the classiest of players but seemed to come up with an injury by just looking at a court.

I really, really hope Draper isn't one of those.

by Anonymousreply 416May 18, 2023 7:35 AM

Iga is always retiring against Rybakina

I kid you not. There is a thought of renaming Wimbledon's Centre Court to Federer Centre Court, to honor the 8 time champ. I'm sure purists would be horrified. It could happen next year. Can't reveal the source, things will amp up as this year's tournament starts. One of the Members will propose it.

by Anonymousreply 419May 19, 2023 1:29 AM

Federere Centre Court

by Anonymousreply 420May 19, 2023 1:47 AM

What an obnoxious initiative. I've already had enough of Roger's post tennis career mugging for any and all cameras. Christ, he'll be commentating for the rest of our lives, that's quite enough glorification thank you very much.

by Anonymousreply 421May 19, 2023 2:06 AM

Show some dignity and at least do it posthumously!

by Anonymousreply 422May 19, 2023 2:08 AM

Honor him some other way. Federer Center Court? That sounds terrible. Something like Court Roger Federer would be better, but I'm against it. I know, courts and venues are named after people regularly, but branding Centre Court seems like a bit too much. I bet he's greasing palms behind the scenes. I'd assume that Roland Garros will name something after Nadal eventually - but his stature there is way more than Fed at Wimbledon, even if they both hold the records for titles at the event.

Fun fact: Federer, FAA, and I all have an August 8 birthday. However, while I played varsity tennis, I didn't make it to the pros.
