Did Celeste Holm deserve a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for All About Eve?

Even with heavyweights Bette Davis and winner George Sanders, and fellow nominee Thelma Ritter?

I thought she was lovely.

Eldergays, unite and have your say.

I thought she was fine but I wonder what Barbara Stanwyck would have done with the role.

by Anonymousreply 1May 9, 2023 5:06 AM

I thought they both did everything they could with their good roles. Whereas Nancy Olson in "Sunset Boulevard" was maybe a litlle duller than was called for...

by Anonymousreply 2May 9, 2023 5:09 AM

She deserved a Nobel Peace prize for having to work with the human equivalent of horse shit, also known as Bette Davis’ “acting”……

by Anonymousreply 3May 9, 2023 5:16 AM

Oh shit, manners.

by Anonymousreply 4May 9, 2023 5:54 AM

Celeste Holm barely deserved a career, her face looked pinched all the time and it was distracting.

by Anonymousreply 5May 9, 2023 6:01 AM

[quote] I thought she was fine but I wonder what Barbara Stanwyck would have done with the role.

I doubt Stanwyck was willing to play second fiddle in a supportive role. She was still a big star around 1950.

by Anonymousreply 6May 9, 2023 6:04 AM

i love when Holm says, "A part in a play.... you'd do all that, just for a part in a play..."

by Anonymousreply 7May 9, 2023 6:18 AM

For some reason I always thought she had an Oscar nom for All About Eve.

by Anonymousreply 8June 18, 2023 2:22 AM

She was ok, but even Marilyn Monroe was more memorable in her small part. She and Hugh Marloew are the most forgettable parts of the film even though her role is pivotal.

by Anonymousreply 9June 18, 2023 2:35 AM

Dull movie, dull acting all around.

by Anonymousreply 10June 18, 2023 2:37 AM

It must have pissed off Celeste that just about everyone else with a major part in the cast was Oscar nominated except for her.

This is the same woman who played Ado Annie in Oklahoma in the 40s. Decades later when the show was being revived, she expected to be able to reprise the part thinking she could still pass off as a teenager.

All About Eve was one of Joan Crawford's favorite movies. Anytime it would air on TV, she would always make sure to watch it.

Joseph Mank had produced many of Joan's biggest hits during her MGM days. They were ex-lovers as well. Joan was originally supposed to voice Addie Ross in A Letter to Three Wives but for some reason she didn't do it, so Celeste Holm got the role. I wonder if Joan was ever considered for Margo Channing especially since she was such a Mank favorite. She did attend the premiere for the movie.

Probably not. Celeste had just won an Oscar two years prior for Gentleman’s Agreement, a much more important and higher profile film.

by Anonymousreply 13June 18, 2023 2:46 AM

R13 Even if you've already won an Oscar, that doesn't mean you don't wish for your future work to be appreciated and nominated as well. Anne Baxter had also won an Oscar but it was still important to her that she be nominated in the Best Actress category, not Supporting Actress.

Celeste was nominated.

by Anonymousreply 15June 18, 2023 2:52 AM

R15 That's what I thought but for some reason, I misconstrued this thread as suggesting she wasn't nominated and if she deserved one. Her being nominated makes sense to me.

by Anonymousreply 16June 18, 2023 3:24 AM

From everything I’ve ever read, she was a bitter cunt.

by Anonymousreply 17June 18, 2023 4:07 AM

Leonardo DiCaprio was the real cunt for the way he treated her.

by Anonymousreply 18June 18, 2023 4:30 AM

Should she have won the Oscar for All About Eve? Why not. Why, I thought to myself, not?

by Anonymousreply 19June 18, 2023 4:31 AM

Thelma Ritter deserved to win. 6 nominations and never a win. She was tied with Deborah Kerr in that sense except Kerr's nominations were all for Best Actress, not Best Supporting Actress.

Celeste Holm does the All About Eve commentary. Besides the fact that I couldn't stand listening to her high-pitched voice which makes her sound like a demented Minnie Mouse suffering from the aftereffects of lung cancer, it was also intolerable because Celeste spent most of the time bitching about Bette Davis acting like a queen bee and how she lacked good manners and breeding. She took offense at Anne Baxter as well as she felt jealous of Anne's superior pedigree.

by Anonymousreply 22June 18, 2023 4:44 AM

Celeste Holm's fifth and final husband was decades younger than herself.

Mr. and Mrs. Basile had legal battles with the co-op they lived in ( 88 Central Park West) and then Ms. Holm's relic had his own war with his late wife's children over inheritance issues.

In common with many other actors from golden era of Hollywood Ms. Holm was not a wealthy woman. More so her longevity meant whatever money she did have was increasingly eaten up by healthcare and other costs as she aged into her 90's.

Saving grace of course is in common with many other actors/theatre people/performing artists Ms. Holm moved into (bought) on Central Park West back when NYC (even overlooking Central Park) was a much different place and time. Downside was the Basile's financial situation was extremely limited. So much so the co-op board began legal proceedings to recoup many months of unpaid maintenance fees.

I always felt she had a resemblance to Vera Farmiga. If they ever made a biopic on Celeste Holm, Vera should play her.

by Anonymousreply 25June 18, 2023 5:37 AM

Who won the Supporting Actress Oscar that year? Josephine Hull for Harvey.

by Anonymousreply 26June 18, 2023 5:40 AM

When I say that legal battle between Ms. Holm's children and husband was nasty, I mean it was *nasty*

When a 41 year old man marries an 87 year old woman chances are it's not for the sex.

by Anonymousreply 28June 18, 2023 5:47 AM

Celeste is fine in the role. She's understated and believably light and sophisticated. I think her voice was charming, just as it was in A Letter To Three Wives. Had she come off stronger, she might have thrown off the balance of the movie. Celeste, like Karen, knew when to play it cool.

Just looked at the Daily Mail article posted at R24, and two things caught my eye:

"The duplex's dining room dubbed by one of her sons as 'fingernail red'" MARY!

"The apartment sold for just under $14" Now ain't THAT a hell of a bargain, and overlooking Central Park, yet!

by Anonymousreply 30June 18, 2023 5:54 AM

That apartment sold for $11.950 million.

It took several years to reach but by terms of settlement estate was split three ways between Ms. Holm's children and surviving spouse.

Ms. Holm was living at 88 CPW when a fire in duplex apartment beneath hers (owned by Robert De Niro sent her to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Arts Horizons a not for profit stepped in to assist Mr. and Mrs. Frank Basile, in particular in legal battle with co-op board. Latter insisted despite beginning legal action they had no intention of evicting.

Fire was caused by lint in dryer vent, but RdN was out of country when blaze occurred. Highly doubt he'd be doing his own laundry even if home.

A small fire broke out Friday afternoon in an apartment building on Central Park West where Robert De Niro lives, according to Fire Department officials and residents of the building.

The fire, which started on the fourth floor of the 12-story Brentmore at 88 Central Park West, was contained by 2:56 p.m., about an hour after a call was made to the Fire Department. Some residents said it started in the laundry room of Mr. De Niro’s apartment; the apartment spans the fourth, fifth and sixth floors.

Mr. De Niro could not be reached for comment, but residents and Fire Department officials said he was not in the building at the time. No injuries to residents were reported.

The building is also home to the Academy Award-winning actress Celeste Holm, 95, and her husband, Frank Basile, 49, who were trapped in their fifth- and sixth-floor apartment as firefighters fought to contain the flames and smoke. Elevators in the building were shut down, and smoke had seeped into the kitchen of their lower floor.

“My wife and I were out late last night, and we were woken by the fire trucks and phone calls saying, ‘Get out, the apartment building is on fire,’” Mr. Basile said.

The Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, and Mr. Basile, who said he and Ms. Holm were not very shaken up by the episode, said their plans for the day had not changed.

“She’s sharp, she’s active. This didn’t get us down at all,” he said. “We’re going to go see ‘Once’ on Broadway.”

*Correction*

Ms. Holms was hospitalized after fire for dehydration, not smoke inhalation.

Dehydration is fairly common with older persons and the elderly, so it's hard to say without knowing more if fire was responsible.

by Anonymousreply 38June 18, 2023 6:27 AM

Robert has 3 floors? What does he do with all that space?

by Anonymousreply 39June 18, 2023 6:30 AM

Robert de Niro moves about a lot. He and then wife Grace Hightower moved downtown after their CPW apartment was damaged by fire, not sure if he still lives in building.

Robert de Niro, Sting, and some others in film/entertainment industry have a habit of buying or whatever into buildings, not remaining long then trying to sell (hopefully flip) at nice profit.

Sting in particular has bounced up and down Central Park West though now IIRC he's down on Billionaire's Row somewhere.
