Oppenheimer Final Trailer

Cillian gets the Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 100May 14, 2023 1:25 AM

I am a big movie buff, and will see about anything (from Remains of the Day to Renfield), but this looks SOOOOOO BORING.

by Anonymousreply 1May 8, 2023 4:32 PM

For some reason, it’s doing nothing for me.

I was very sensitized to Hiroshima as a child because of “A Thousand Paper Cranes”.

It will be interesting how this performs because it’s so American.

Will it be the Top Gun of 2023. White men being powerful? Probably.

I love Nolan so I’ll definitely watch it.

by Anonymousreply 2May 8, 2023 4:33 PM

R1 Yeah when the trailer went silent I was like “good it’s over”.

It looks like it’s very dialogue driven without any action.

by Anonymousreply 3May 8, 2023 4:34 PM

[quote]Will it be the Top Gun of 2023. White men being powerful? Probably.

Omg i never saw Top Gun from this perspective. Very good interpretation.

by Anonymousreply 4May 8, 2023 4:36 PM

But while that may have been the crux of Top Gun’s appeal, wouldn’t the message of Oppenheimer (assuming this is, you know, an antiwar movie) essentially be the opposite? Top Gun is like “Oh yay this is so fun” and Oppenheimer is like “ZOMG this is horrible!”

by Anonymousreply 5May 8, 2023 4:46 PM

Definitely looking forward to this.

by Anonymousreply 6May 8, 2023 4:49 PM

R5 I didn’t get anti war movie vibes from this.

This could be interpreted how Murica shut the Japs up to American men.

by Anonymousreply 7May 8, 2023 4:49 PM

Well given that the trailer actually shows Oppenheimer looking nervous and worried while the happy Americans celebrate in the background and then the other scientist says, “…until somebody builds a bigger bomb”, I think it’s unlikely they’ll go in that direction.

Also worthy of note - Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy aren’t Americans while all the Top Gun principals are.

by Anonymousreply 8May 8, 2023 5:02 PM

[quote] It looks like it’s very dialogue driven without any action.

It's about a group of people arguing about physics under extreme stress for two years, did you expect kung-fu fights?

I love Cillian and have always been fascinated by the Manhattan project, so I'm all in.

by Anonymousreply 9May 8, 2023 5:03 PM

[quote]It's about a group of people arguing about physics under extreme stress for two years, did you expect kung-fu fights?

It isn't that dialogue heavy movies are "bad" R9. Glengarry Glen Ross was fantastic for example.

I'm just not seeing the drama/conflict that would drive this story.

by Anonymousreply 10May 8, 2023 5:10 PM

Spoiler: Oppenheimer argued for nuclear arms control. J Edgar Hoover targeted him and wiretapped his (legally protected) conversations with attorneys. He lost his security clearance so he could be sidelined. This will not be a pro-was movie.

by Anonymousreply 11May 8, 2023 5:12 PM

Tom Conti unusual but striking choice for Albert Einstein

Great sad eyes

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 12May 8, 2023 5:13 PM

The conflict is:

1. the race to build the bomb before the Nazis

2. the arguments about the morality of 1 and the inner conflicts of the scientists and Oppenheimer himself

3. As R11 points out, the government turning on Oppenheimer and his rather tragic fall

by Anonymousreply 13May 8, 2023 5:15 PM

OH FUCK THIS IS ROBERT DOWNEY

I was absolutely certain watching the trailer it was Jeremy Irons.

Oh don’t you worry R3, I have a feeling the movie includes some big explosions too.

[quote]Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

by Anonymousreply 16May 8, 2023 5:17 PM

R9 That would be awesome!!!

It just looks boring and I didn’t feel any tension in the movie at Matt Damon takes me out of it cause I’m expecting to be his character from Ocean’s 11.

by Anonymousreply 17May 8, 2023 5:17 PM

Tell me Mingey

Has Oprah planned with ye recently?

by Anonymousreply 18May 8, 2023 5:18 PM

Matt Damon is clearly (and very well) cast as the audience surrogate.

by Anonymousreply 19May 8, 2023 5:19 PM

And R13 don’t forget the Odd Couple relationship between Oppenheimer and General Groves. Two polar opposites in terms of personalities but they managed to work extremely well together under enormous pressure to succeed. Hopefully Murphy and Damon have similar chemistry on film.

Let’s just say that she still has “bats in her belfry” :-(

by Anonymousreply 21May 8, 2023 5:24 PM

Oh fuck this is Matthew Modine

I thought this character was FDR from the trailer but it’s not

Three fucking hours long, apparently. No way.

by Anonymousreply 23May 8, 2023 5:27 PM

Yawnnnnn

by Anonymousreply 24May 8, 2023 5:49 PM

R21 (aka Oprahsminge), it’s “belfry’s” in this instance.

by Anonymousreply 25May 8, 2023 6:00 PM

I suspect this is going to have several timelines or storylines converging in complicated and confusing ways as usual with C. Nolan. I find Nolan's films visually interesting (not mind blowing) but annoyingly confounding. And other than the fact that he gets monster budgets to indulge his whims, with which any director can mount epic visions, I don't think he's that interesting a director.

I will wait for this to stream.

by Anonymousreply 26May 8, 2023 6:20 PM

Was looking forward to this, but from the trailer it looks tedious as hell. Seems more like homework than entertainment.

by Anonymousreply 27May 8, 2023 6:21 PM

This and Dune 2 are the only films I’ll want to see in theaters this year.

by Anonymousreply 28May 8, 2023 6:43 PM

R27 I am going to go back and add some more entertaining elements for you!

[quote] I am going to go back and add some more entertaining elements for you!

Would that include Matt Damon’s ass?

by Anonymousreply 30May 8, 2023 6:50 PM

Tenet was the first film I saw in the cinema after Covid lockdown. It wasn't a great film but it was visually brilliant and needed to be seen on a huge screen.

This looks the same. I'll make sure I do a big wee before I go in and don't drink any coffee all day.

I have mixed feelings about casting non Jews in Jewish roles but have some sympathies with Sarah Silverman's arguments, but I'm not sure Christopher Nolan could have cast a more non Jewish looking pair of actors to play than Oppenheimers.

by Anonymousreply 31May 8, 2023 7:02 PM

Do Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh have to be in every fucking thing?

by Anonymousreply 32May 8, 2023 7:06 PM

[quote] I have mixed feelings about casting non Jews in Jewish roles but have some sympathies with Sarah Silverman's arguments, but I'm not sure Christopher Nolan could have cast a more non Jewish looking pair of actors to play than Oppenheimers.

Do you also have mixed feelings about race blind casting in the theater with actors of mixed races playing blood relatives? Or gender blind casting with women playing the roles traditionally assigned to male performers, like the new revival of 1776 the musical?

by Anonymousreply 33May 8, 2023 7:09 PM

Katherine "Kitty" Vissering Puening was born in Recklinghausen, Westphalia, Prussia, Germany

So, not a Jew.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 34May 8, 2023 7:10 PM

Actually Florence Pugh should have been cast as Kitty

She has the same kind of squat physicality

by Anonymousreply 35May 8, 2023 7:15 PM

Florence’s brother Toby Sebastian is fucking gorgeous! Why couldn’t they put him in the movie? He could’ve played… I don’t fucking know, Harry Truman or somebody.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 36May 8, 2023 7:18 PM

Toby Sebastian actually looks more like Kitty than either of them

by Anonymousreply 37May 8, 2023 7:20 PM

[quote]Katherine "Kitty" Vissering Puening was born in Recklinghausen, Westphalia, Prussia, Germany. So, not a Jew.

Oh well, I did look to check and thought it said she was. Claire Danes in a cheap chemo wig would do Kitty justice.

by Anonymousreply 38May 8, 2023 7:21 PM

If it has Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, it must be bad.

by Anonymousreply 39May 8, 2023 7:22 PM

Fag Damon is annoying and has become a bad actor with zero range and lots of tics.

Nolan makes movies like a pretentious schizophrenic who is being intentionally confusing in an attempt to seem artistic and brilliant. His directing is shit.

by Anonymousreply 40May 8, 2023 7:25 PM

I think it may go the way of "Mank".

by Anonymousreply 41May 8, 2023 7:29 PM

It will be like Dunkirk - boring ass movie that wins a tech award or two and that’s it.

by Anonymousreply 42May 8, 2023 7:33 PM

[quote]Do you also have mixed feelings about race blind casting in the theater with actors of mixed races playing blood relatives? Or gender blind casting with women playing the roles traditionally assigned to male performers, like the new revival of 1776 the musical?

Absolutely fine with that. In fact I'll be seeing a new production of The Merchant Of Venice with a (Jewish) woman playing Shylock later this year.

by Anonymousreply 43May 8, 2023 7:39 PM

I can't stand Cillian Murphy's eyes. People go to the plastic surgeon to have their eyelids lifted but he should go to have some eyelids transplanted into his eye sockets.

by Anonymousreply 44May 8, 2023 8:49 PM

There was an excellent series on Amazon Prime (IIRC) called Manhattan dealing with the same subject matter, and it was anything but boring. It's an incredible story that could easily have had a very different outcome.

by Anonymousreply 45May 8, 2023 9:12 PM

It was actually WGN

It was that weird period when Mad Men became a hit on AMC and sixties period dramas just popped up like mushrooms

by Anonymousreply 46May 8, 2023 9:17 PM

Anyone here recall the TV film DAY ONE from the late 80s with David Strathairn as Oppenheimer and Brian Dennehy as Gen. Groves? It was quite good.

Strathairn played Oppenheimer again in the docu-drama The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer on PBS in 2009. That's worth seeing too.

by Anonymousreply 47May 8, 2023 9:46 PM

That sounds great, R47. All I could find is the trailer. Strathairn is one hot Oppie.

Whatever you do, avoid "Fat Man and Little Boy" with Paul Newman. Dreck.

This is at least the second film Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy have done together, and weirdly Emily plays Oppenheimer’s wife. They should never do films together, especially where they play spouses, because they look so much alike. Cillian looks like a female version of Blunt.

by Anonymousreply 49May 8, 2023 10:24 PM

*I* an the female version of Cillian Murphy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 50May 8, 2023 10:34 PM

I actually forgot, Cillian already did play a trans. He didn’t look like Emily Blunt.

Oddly, he looked more feminine.

by Anonymousreply 51May 8, 2023 10:37 PM

Cillian is the female version of Cillian. That’s why he’s referred to as Miss Cillian Murphy on DL.

by Anonymousreply 52May 8, 2023 10:45 PM

After the first nukes were dropped on Japan, Oppenheimer met with President Truman in the oval office crying that he had blood on his hands. Truman got pissed, kicked him out and yelled "I'm the one with blood on my hands!" Worst. Invention. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 53May 8, 2023 10:56 PM

Truman probably had a good laugh with his generals and called him a sissy.

by Anonymousreply 54May 8, 2023 10:59 PM

Just think how awesome would have been if instead of killing everybody, the bomb just turned them trans.

by Anonymousreply 55May 8, 2023 11:02 PM

If the US hadn't dropped the bombs, a land invasion was estimated to cost up to 1 million American lives. It was horrible, but necessary.

by Anonymousreply 56May 8, 2023 11:03 PM

Also, R56, the Germans were very close to developing their own bomb; and had they succeeded before us, that would have truly been catastrophic.

by Anonymousreply 57May 8, 2023 11:07 PM

r57 the world would've been over.

by Anonymousreply 58May 8, 2023 11:20 PM

Even in a brief trailer, Matt Damon exhibits poor acting.

by Anonymousreply 59May 8, 2023 11:21 PM

There was a tragically underrated miniseries a while back called "Manhattan" that showed there was a large amount of drama and intrigue that occurred. YOu can watch it on Freevee now. The movie will have a long way to go to be better than the miniseries. Worth watching.

I second the Manhattan miniseries from a few years ago, it was very good.

We (the Allies) won WWII by the skin of our teeth. It's shocking how close the margin of victory was.

You third it, R62. R45 was the first to mention it followed by R60.

Man-ha-an.

by Anonymousreply 65May 8, 2023 11:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 69May 9, 2023 2:54 AM

r69 they're both famous because of their looks. Their personalities are irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 70May 9, 2023 2:57 AM

R70, if you think an actor's personality is not important - particularly where the actor is actually limited - then you are mistaken.

Damon plays nothing. Evans plays himself. Evans wins.

by Anonymousreply 71May 9, 2023 3:16 AM

R71 = Barbara Thorndyke

by Anonymousreply 72May 9, 2023 3:17 AM

Oh shut up r71.

by Anonymousreply 73May 9, 2023 3:18 AM

It looks boring because Nathan Crowley, who has been the production designer for all of Nolan's previous films, decided to work on the upcoming Wicked films instead of Oppenheimer. Nolan is nothing without Crowley, who designs the entire look and feel of Nolan's films.

BTW, Nathan Crowley is the grandson of famed British occultist, Alistair Crowley.

I too loved Manhattan the TV series. This movie just looks like a bad imitation. And the series was in 2014-15, so to me, not so very long ago.

I'll pass.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 75May 9, 2023 3:29 AM

I will 5th or 6th or whatever-th the show Manhattan. I'm not super up on the history but that show did a very good job creating tensions through the character dealings that affected the whole process, e.g. spies within the project and also the obtrusive wiretapping and bugging. There was also the tensions between the gun-model team and the something I can't remember-model team. It was short-lived but it was amazing. Although I can kinda see Cillian ash Oppie, he's a rather touched choice. I don't doubt he will pull it off, but I really envisioned someone else (the guy who played him in MANHATTAN was great). Matt Damon is just one big ham just flopping about on the stage.

by Anonymousreply 76May 9, 2023 6:16 AM

I fear it looks badly overstated. Everyone having their dramatic moment. More understatement would have gone a long way. But given it's one of the very few major studio films this year for adults, and it means $100 million bet, everything has to be amped up and coloured in with crayon.

by Anonymousreply 77May 9, 2023 6:23 AM

Manhattan was where I learned to appreciate John Benjamin Hickey.

by Anonymousreply 78May 9, 2023 6:45 AM

Why are the original score for Nolan films all sound similar

by Anonymousreply 79May 9, 2023 6:55 AM

Matt Damon was creepy good in The Talented Mr Ripley but he’s overacting here

by Anonymousreply 80May 9, 2023 6:58 AM

Overkill with the editing in the trailer. Pretty much the whole movie there in two minutes

by Anonymousreply 87May 9, 2023 11:28 AM

I like that Nolan does art films disguised as blockbusters.

R74 maybe it just looks boring because it takes place on university campuses, in laboratories and a ramshackle desert town built out of expediency? Not glamorous work. If I was a production designer of Crowley’s talent, I too would choose to recreate Oz.
