Oppenheimer Final Trailer

I am a big movie buff, and will see about anything (from Remains of the Day to Renfield), but this looks SOOOOOO BORING.

For some reason, it’s doing nothing for me.

I was very sensitized to Hiroshima as a child because of “A Thousand Paper Cranes”.

It will be interesting how this performs because it’s so American.

Will it be the Top Gun of 2023. White men being powerful? Probably.

I love Nolan so I’ll definitely watch it.

But while that may have been the crux of Top Gun’s appeal, wouldn’t the message of Oppenheimer (assuming this is, you know, an antiwar movie) essentially be the opposite? Top Gun is like “Oh yay this is so fun” and Oppenheimer is like “ZOMG this is horrible!”

Definitely looking forward to this.

This could be interpreted how Murica shut the Japs up to American men.

Well given that the trailer actually shows Oppenheimer looking nervous and worried while the happy Americans celebrate in the background and then the other scientist says, “…until somebody builds a bigger bomb”, I think it’s unlikely they’ll go in that direction.

Also worthy of note - Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy aren’t Americans while all the Top Gun principals are.

It isn't that dialogue heavy movies are "bad" R9. Glengarry Glen Ross was fantastic for example.

I'm just not seeing the drama/conflict that would drive this story.

Spoiler: Oppenheimer argued for nuclear arms control. J Edgar Hoover targeted him and wiretapped his (legally protected) conversations with attorneys. He lost his security clearance so he could be sidelined. This will not be a pro-was movie.

2. the arguments about the morality of 1 and the inner conflicts of the scientists and Oppenheimer himself

3. As R11 points out, the government turning on Oppenheimer and his rather tragic fall

Matt Damon is clearly (and very well) cast as the audience surrogate.

And R13 don’t forget the Odd Couple relationship between Oppenheimer and General Groves. Two polar opposites in terms of personalities but they managed to work extremely well together under enormous pressure to succeed. Hopefully Murphy and Damon have similar chemistry on film.

R21 (aka Oprahsminge), it’s “belfry’s” in this instance.

I suspect this is going to have several timelines or storylines converging in complicated and confusing ways as usual with C. Nolan. I find Nolan's films visually interesting (not mind blowing) but annoyingly confounding. And other than the fact that he gets monster budgets to indulge his whims, with which any director can mount epic visions, I don't think he's that interesting a director.

I will wait for this to stream.

Was looking forward to this, but from the trailer it looks tedious as hell. Seems more like homework than entertainment.

This and Dune 2 are the only films I’ll want to see in theaters this year.

Tenet was the first film I saw in the cinema after Covid lockdown. It wasn't a great film but it was visually brilliant and needed to be seen on a huge screen.

Absolutely fine with that. In fact I'll be seeing a new production of The Merchant Of Venice with a (Jewish) woman playing Shylock later this year.

I can't stand Cillian Murphy's eyes. People go to the plastic surgeon to have their eyelids lifted but he should go to have some eyelids transplanted into his eye sockets.

There was an excellent series on Amazon Prime (IIRC) called Manhattan dealing with the same subject matter, and it was anything but boring. It's an incredible story that could easily have had a very different outcome.

Anyone here recall the TV film DAY ONE from the late 80s with David Strathairn as Oppenheimer and Brian Dennehy as Gen. Groves? It was quite good.

Strathairn played Oppenheimer again in the docu-drama The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer on PBS in 2009. That's worth seeing too.

Whatever you do, avoid "Fat Man and Little Boy" with Paul Newman. Dreck.

This is at least the second film Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy have done together, and weirdly Emily plays Oppenheimer’s wife. They should never do films together, especially where they play spouses, because they look so much alike. Cillian looks like a female version of Blunt.

After the first nukes were dropped on Japan, Oppenheimer met with President Truman in the oval office crying that he had blood on his hands. Truman got pissed, kicked him out and yelled "I'm the one with blood on my hands!" Worst. Invention. Ever.

Truman probably had a good laugh with his generals and called him a sissy.

Just think how awesome would have been if instead of killing everybody, the bomb just turned them trans.

If the US hadn't dropped the bombs, a land invasion was estimated to cost up to 1 million American lives. It was horrible, but necessary.

Also, R56, the Germans were very close to developing their own bomb; and had they succeeded before us, that would have truly been catastrophic.

Even in a brief trailer, Matt Damon exhibits poor acting.

There was a tragically underrated miniseries a while back called "Manhattan" that showed there was a large amount of drama and intrigue that occurred. YOu can watch it on Freevee now. The movie will have a long way to go to be better than the miniseries. Worth watching.

Matt Damon became a star for his face and his ass, not his acting.

It looks boring because Nathan Crowley, who has been the production designer for all of Nolan's previous films, decided to work on the upcoming Wicked films instead of Oppenheimer. Nolan is nothing without Crowley, who designs the entire look and feel of Nolan's films.

BTW, Nathan Crowley is the grandson of famed British occultist, Alistair Crowley.

I too loved Manhattan the TV series. This movie just looks like a bad imitation. And the series was in 2014-15, so to me, not so very long ago.

I will 5th or 6th or whatever-th the show Manhattan. I'm not super up on the history but that show did a very good job creating tensions through the character dealings that affected the whole process, e.g. spies within the project and also the obtrusive wiretapping and bugging. There was also the tensions between the gun-model team and the something I can't remember-model team. It was short-lived but it was amazing. Although I can kinda see Cillian ash Oppie, he's a rather touched choice. I don't doubt he will pull it off, but I really envisioned someone else (the guy who played him in MANHATTAN was great). Matt Damon is just one big ham just flopping about on the stage.

I fear it looks badly overstated. Everyone having their dramatic moment. More understatement would have gone a long way. But given it's one of the very few major studio films this year for adults, and it means $100 million bet, everything has to be amped up and coloured in with crayon.

Manhattan was where I learned to appreciate John Benjamin Hickey.

I'm glad Cillian has this big meaty role and hope he delivers. I think he's an unusual talent who brings something different to the screen than your usual bland leading man type. And, yes, I think he's adorable too.

I don't know why people say Matt Damon is good looking? When he was still young, my brother and I discussed it. I said Ben Affleck was about a million times better looking. My brother said Matt Damon looked like a Leonardo DiCaprio who had been kicked in the face.

R99 Same. I saw Good Will Hunting when it came out, and I was 18. I was confused because I knew Damon was meant to be 'the hot one,' but Ben Affleck was a lot more attractive.
